Cylindrical shell response to random acoustic excitation, considering single point transfer functions and equivalent force power spectral densities
The response of composite laminated plates subjected to nonstationary random excitation is determined. First-order shear deformation theory is used for the analysis of symmetric cross-ply and antisymmetric angle-ply plates. The time-dependent component of the forcing function is taken as a product of a well-defined, slowly varying envelope function, and a noise function, assumed to be white or narrow-band random excitation.

Combined environmental/modal vibration testing has been implemented at the NASA Glenn Research Center's Structural Dynamics Laboratory. The benefits of combined vibration testing are that it facilitates test article modal characterization and vibration qualification testing. The Combustion Module-2 (CM-2) is a space experiment that launches on Shuttle mission STS 107 in the SPACEHAB Research Double Module. The CM-2 flight hardware is integrated into a SPACEHAB single and double rack. CM-2 rack level combined vibration testing was recently completed on a shaker table to characterize the structure's modal response and verify the random vibration response. Control accelerometers and limit force gauges, located between the fixture and rack interface, were used to verify the input excitation. Results of the testing were used to verify the loads and environments for flight on the Shuttle.

Approximation method for determining response of nonlinear dynamic systems to random disturbances
Improved method of computing vibrational response of structure to transient random acoustic excitation at predominantly low frequencies devised, called "deterministic". Motivated by need to analyze more accurately vibro/acoustic responses of structures at spacecraft-launching facilities and determine whether need for reinforcement or redesign to withstand launch environment. Also used to study such phenomena as earthquake motions, ocean waves, aircraft pressure gusts, responses of bridges to winds, and effects to jet-engine noise on aircraft structures.
