A method for star vector determination from alignment optical telescope sighting

A method is described for determining the measured star vector in LM body coordinates when the measurement data consist of a spiral measurement, a cusor measurement, and a time associated with each measurement. The method is defined from alignment optical telescope (AOT) sightings from the LM on the lunar surface. This formulation will be coded into the real-time computer complex off-line AOT and gravity (AOT+G) bench program, the Gravity-Optics LM Attitude and Position (GOLAP) program.

A passive balancer for a class of rotating spacecraft

Equations of motion are derived for a flexibly connected dual-spin spacecraft equipped with four pendulumlike passive controllers for mass balance and spin axis control. These equations are constrained and used to determine the conditions required for successful steady-state operation of the controllers with a spinning, rigid-body spacecraft. Generalized controller sizing criteria are derived and related to limiting values of system time constant for an example spacecraft unbalance condition. A generalized real-time computer simulation of a large, slowly spinning rigid-body spacecraft equipped with passive controllers is also presented. Numerical results of this simulation show that passive controllers can successfully balance a class of rotating rigid bodies undergoing large internal mass and inertial disturbances. The ratio of total controller mass to spacecraft mass need not be greater than 1 to 2 percent.

The Simulation of a Jumbo Jet Transport Aircraft. Volume 2: Modeling Data

The manned simulation of a large transport aircraft is described. Aircraft and systems data necessary to implement the mathematical model described in Volume I and a discussion of how these data are used in model are presented. The results of the real-time computations in the NASA Ames Research Center Flight Simulator for Advanced Aircraft are shown and compared to flight test data and to the results obtained in a training simulator known to be satisfactory.

NASTRAN data generation of helicopter fuselages using interactive graphics

The development and implementation of a preprocessor system for the finite element analysis of helicopter fuselages is described. The system utilizes interactive graphics for the generation, display, and editing of NASTRAN data for fuselage models. It is operated from an IBM 2250 cathode ray tube (CRT) console driven by an IBM 370/145 computer. Real time interaction plus automatic data generation reduces the nominal 6 to 10 week time for manual generation and checking of data to a few days. The interactive graphics system consists of a series of satellite programs operated from a central NASTRAN Systems Monitor. Fuselage structural models including the outer shell and internal structure may be rapidly generated. All numbering systems are automatically assigned. Hard copy plots of the model labeled with GRID or elements ID's are also available. General purpose programs for displaying and editing NASTRAN data are included in the system. Utilization of the NASTRAN interactive graphics system has made possible the multiple finite element analysis of complex helicopter fuselage structures within design schedules.

Collection and processing of data from a phase-coherent meteor radar

An analysis of the measurement accuracy requirement of a high resolution meteor radar for observing short period, atmospheric waves is presented, and a system which satisfies the requirements is described. A medium scale, real time computer is programmed to perform all echo recognition and coordinate measurement functions. The measurement algorithms are exercised on noisy data generated by a program which simulates the hardware system, in order to find the effects of noise on the measurement accuracies.

Flight control experiences

A multidisciplinary medical-management team at mission control provided Skylab crew support by monitoring health, retrieving and compiling experimental data, assisting in the development of flight plans, and by contributing to in-flight procedures and checklists. Real time computers assisted the flight crews in performing medical and other experiments.

Trends in modern system theory

The topics considered are related to linear control system design, adaptive control, failure detection, control under failure, system reliability, and large-scale systems and decentralized control. It is pointed out that the design of a linear feedback control system which regulates a process about a desirable set point or steady-state condition in the presence of disturbances is a very important problem. The linearized dynamics of the process are used for design purposes. The typical linear-quadratic design involving the solution of the optimal control problem of a linear time-invariant system with respect to a quadratic performance criterion is considered along with gain reduction theorems and the multivariable phase margin theorem. The stumbling block in many adaptive design methodologies is associated with the amount of real time computation which is necessary. Attention is also given to the desperate need to develop good theories for large-scale systems, the beginning of a microprocessor revolution, the translation of the Wiener-Hopf theory into the time domain, and advances made in dynamic team theory, dynamic stochastic games, and finite memory stochastic control.

A singular perturbation analysis of minimum time long range intercept

The application of singular perturbation theory for deriving algorithms suitable for on board real time computation of optimal aircraft trajectory control was investigated. Minimum time intercept in three dimensions was selected as a pilot problem formulation, and data for an early version F-4 aircraft was used to represent aircraft aerodynamic and propulsion characteristics. Results include the derivation of nonlinear, near optimal feedback control laws that are readily implementable in an aircraft flight computer, performance results for a variety of initial conditions (including optimal intercept at short ranges), and a point mass three dimensional simulation suitable for representing fighter aircraft under closed loop optimal control.

Guidance of an autonomous planetary rover based on a short-range hazard detection system

The guidance of an autonomous planetary roving vehicle using a scanning laser/multidetector terrain sensor for short-range hazard detection has been simulated. The sensor data are used to model the terrain, thereby providing the information required by a path selection algorithm to control the motion of the rover. These simulation studies are providing the basis for developing both the real-time computer control software and the hardware systems for laboratory and field testing of rover.

Investigations on transparent liquid-miscibility gap systems

Sedimentation and phase separation is a well known occurrence in monotectic or miscibility gap alloys. Previous investigations indicate that it may be possible to prepare such alloys in a low-gravity space environment but recent experiments indicate that there may be nongravity dependent phase separation processes which can hinder the formation of such alloys. Such phase separation processes are studied using transparent liquid systems and holography. By reconstructing holograms into a commercial-particle-analysis system, real time computer analysis can be performed on emulsions with diameters in the range of 5 micrometers or greater. Thus dynamic effects associated with particle migration and coalescence can be studied. Characterization studies on two selected immiscible systems including an accurate determination of phase diagrams, surface and interfacial tension measurements, surface excess and wetting behavior near critical solution temperatures completed.

Development and evaluation of a Kalman-filter algorithm for terminal area navigation using sensors of moderate accuracy

Translational state estimation in terminal area operations, using a set of commonly available position, air data, and acceleration sensors, is described. Kalman filtering is applied to obtain maximum estimation accuracy from the sensors but feasibility in real-time computations requires a variety of approximations and devices aimed at minimizing the required computation time with only negligible loss of accuracy. Accuracy behavior throughout the terminal area, its relation to sensor accuracy, its effect on trajectory tracking errors and control activity in an automatic flight control system, and its adequacy in terms of existing criteria for various terminal area operations are examined. The principal investigative tool is a simulation of the system.
