Exploring the QCD Phase Diagram with Fluctuations

Here, we report on recent progress concerning the theoretical description of event-by-event fluctuations in heavy-ion collisions. Specifically, we discuss a new Cooper–Frye particlization routine — the subensemble sampler — which is designed to incorporate effects of global conservation laws, thermal smearing and resonance decays on fluctuation measurements in various rapidity acceptances. First applications of the method to heavy-ion collisions at the LHC energies are presented, and further necessary steps to analyze fluctuations from the RHIC beam energy scan are outlined.

Spectra, composition, and interactions of nuclei with magnet interaction chambers

Emulsion chambers will be flown in the Astromag Facility to measure the cosmic ray composition and spectra to 10 exp 15 eV total energy and to definitively study the characteristics of nucleus-nucleus interactions above 10 exp 12 eV/n. Two configurations of emulsion chambers will be flown in the SCIN/MAGIC experiment. One chamber has an emulsion target and a calorimeter similar to those recently flown on balloons for composition and spectra measurements. The other has an identical calorimeter and a low-density target section optimized for performing rigidity measurements on charged particles produced in interactions. The transverse momenta of charged and neutral mesons, direct hadronic pairs from resonance decays and interference effects, and possible charge clustering in high-density states of matter will be studied.

Excited J -- Resonances in Meson-Meson Scattering from Lattice QCD

Understanding the excited light meson spectrum is vital to our understanding of how quarks and gluons bind to become hadrons. This sector is home to a plethora of states including hadrons laying outside the quark model. Distinguishing the exotics from the rest of the spectrum would be made easier if we first had a handle on the light qq¯ spectrum. I present the first determination of excited light JP C = 1--, 2--, 3-- resonances in meson-meson scattering at the SU(3) flavor point from lattice QCD. This system can be described in the context of pseudoscalar-vector elastic scattering and I determine two 1-- resonances; a lighter broader state followed by a heavier narrow state, one broad 2-- resonance, and one narrow 3-- resonance. This is the first calculation in lattice QCD that successfully extracts two resonances from the same partial wave, as well as the first calculation of a light 2-- resonance. I present the results in terms of the physical omega*/J , phi*/J resonances decaying into final states pi rho, KK¯*, eta omega and others, and compare to experiment as well as a popular phenomenological model.

The 15th order resonance on the decaying orbit of TETR-3

The orbit of TETR-3 (1971-83B), inclination: 33 deg, passed through resonance with 15th order geopotential terms in February 1972. The resonance caused the orbit inclination to increase by 0.015 deg. Analysis of 48 sets of mean Kepler elements for this satellite in 1971-1972 (across the resonance) has established strong constraints for high degree, 15th order gravitational terms (normalized). This result combined with previous results on high inclination 15th order and other resonant orbits suggests that the coefficients of the gravity field beyond the 16th degree are significantly smaller than Kaula's rule.

Description of the Proton-Decaying 0 2 + Resonance of the α Particle

The recent precise experimental determination of the monopole transition form factor from the ground state of 4 He to its $0$$^{+}_{2}$ resonance via electron scattering has reinvigorated discussions about the nature of this first excited state of the α particle. The $0$$^{+}_{2}$ state has been traditionally interpreted in the literature as the isoscalar monopole resonance (breathing mode) or, alternatively, as a particle-hole shell-model excitation. To better understand the nature of this state, which lies only ~410 keV above the proton emission threshold, we employ the coupled-channel representation of the no-core Gamow shell model. By considering the [ 3 H + p], [ 3 He + n], and [ 2 H + 2 H] reaction channels, we explain the excitation energy and monopole form factor of the $0$$^{+}_{2}$ state. Furthermore, we argue that the continuum coupling strongly impacts the nature of this state, which carries characteristics of the proton decay threshold.

Erratum: Description of the Proton-Decaying 0$^{+}_{2}$ Resonance of the 𝛼 Particle [Phys. Rev. Lett. 131 , 242502 (2023)]

As pointed out by P. Yin, H. Li, A. M. Shirokov, X. Zhao, and J. P. Vary, due to the incorrect normalization of the charge density, our definition of the monopole form factor 𝐹rel⁡(𝑞 2 ) was different from that used in other papers [1,2] by a factor of 1/𝑍. Furthermore, this resulted in the overall incorrect normalization of the monopole form factor in this Letter.

Decays of N ∗ and ∆ ∗ resonances into Nρ , ∆ π , and N $f$ 0 (500)

The decays of N ∗ and ∆ ∗ resonances into Nρ , ∆ π , and N $f$ 0 (500), and final states are investigated in a coupled-channel analysis of data from pion- and photoinduced reactions. Improvements in the fit quality are observed upon the inclusion of additional resonance contributions. Branching ratios for the intermediate isobars ∆(1232) π , Nρ , and N $f$ 0 (500) are reported.

Search for a Narrow Resonance Lighter than 200 GeV Decaying to a Pair of Muons in Proton-Proton Collisions at $\sqrt{s} =$ TeV

A search is presented for a narrow resonance decaying to a pair of oppositely charged muons using s=13 TeV proton-proton collision data recorded at the LHC. In the 45–75 and 110–200 GeV resonance mass ranges, the search is based on conventional triggering and event reconstruction techniques. In the 11.5–45 GeV mass range, the search uses data collected with dimuon triggers with low transverse momentum thresholds, recorded at high rate by storing a reduced amount of trigger-level information. The data correspond to integrated luminosities of 137 and 96.6 fb-1 for conventional and high-rate triggering, respectively. No significant resonant peaks are observed in the probed mass ranges. The search sets the most stringent constraints to date on a dark photon in the ∼30–75 and 110–200 GeV mass ranges.

Improved Measurement of C P Violation Parameters in B s 0 → J / ψ K + K − Decays in the Vicinity of the ϕ ( 1020 ) Resonance

The decay-time-dependent C P asymmetry in B s 0 → J / ψ ( → μ + μ − ) K + K − decays is measured using proton-proton collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 6 fb − 1 , collected with the LHCb detector at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. Using a sample of approximately 349 000 B s 0 signal decays with an invariant K + K − mass in the vicinity of the ϕ ( 1020 ) resonance, the C P -violating phase ϕ s is measured, along with the difference in decay widths of the light and heavy mass eigenstates of the B s 0 − B ¯ s 0 system, Δ Γ s , and the difference of the average B s 0 and B 0 meson decay widths, Γ s − Γ d . The values obtained are ϕ s = − 0.039 ± 0.022 ± 0.006 rad , Δ Γ s = 0.0845 ± 0.0044 ± 0.0024 ps − 1 , and Γ s − Γ d = − 0.005 6 − 0.0015 + 0.0013 ± 0.0014 ps − 1 , where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. These are the most precise single measurements to date and are consistent with expectations based on the Standard Model and with the previous LHCb analyses of this decay. These results are combined with previous independent LHCb measurements. The phase ϕ s is also measured independently for each polarization state of the K + K − system and shows no evidence for polarization dependence. © 2024 CERN, for the LHCb Collaboration 2024 CERN

Search for new phenomena in multi-body invariant masses in events with at least one isolated lepton and two jets using $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV proton–proton collision data collected by the ATLAS detector

A search for resonances in events with at least one isolated lepton (e or μ ) and two jets is performed using 139 fb -1 of $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV proton–proton collision data recorded by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. Deviations from a smoothly falling background hypothesis are tested in three- and four-body invariant mass distributions constructed from leptons and jets, including jets identified as originating from bottom quarks. Model-independent limits on generic resonances characterised by cascade decays of particles leading to multiple jets and leptons in the final state are presented. The limits are calculated using Gaussian shapes with different widths for the invariant masses. The multi-body invariant masses are also used to set 95% confidence level upper limits on the cross-section times branching ratios for the production and subsequent decay of resonances predicted by several new physics scenarios.

Search for low-mass dilepton resonances in Higgs boson decays to four-lepton final states in proton–proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13\,\text {TeV} $

A search for low-mass dilepton resonances in Higgs boson decays is conducted in the four-lepton final state. The decay is assumed to proceed via a pair of beyond the standard model particles, or one such particle and a ${\mathrm{Z}}$ boson. The search uses proton–proton collision data collected with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137$\,\text {fb}^{-1}$, at a center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s} = 13\,\text {TeV} $. No significant deviation from the standard model expectation is observed. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set on model-independent Higgs boson decay branching fractions. Additionally, limits on dark photon and axion-like particle production, based on two specific models, are reported.

Observation of New Charmonium or Charmoniumlike States in B + → D * ± D ∓ K + Decays

A study of resonant structures in B + → D * + D − K + and B + → D * − D + K + decays is performed, using proton-proton collision data at center-of-mass energies of s = 7 , 8, and 13 TeV recorded by the LHCb experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb − 1 . A simultaneous amplitude fit is performed to the two channels with contributions from resonances decaying to D * − D + and D * + D − states linked by C parity. This procedure allows the C parities of resonances in the D * ± D ∓ mass spectra to be determined. Four charmonium or charmoniumlike states are observed decaying into D * ± D ∓ : η c ( 3945 ) , h c ( 4000 ) , χ c 1 ( 4010 ) , and h c ( 4300 ) , with quantum numbers J P C equal to 0 − + , 1 + − , 1 + + , and 1 + − , respectively. At least three of these states have not been observed previously. In addition, the existence of the T c ¯ s ¯ 0 * ( 2870 ) 0 and T c ¯ s ¯ 1 * ( 2900 ) 0 resonances in the D − K + mass spectrum, already observed in the B + → D + D − K + decay, is confirmed in a different production channel. © 2024 CERN, for the LHCb Collaboration 2024 CERN

Search for an s -wave resonance in Li 7 just above the proton-decay threshold

Near-threshold resonances play an important role in nucleosynthesis and applied nuclear science. The study of nuclei removed from stability has greatly extended the list of resonances close to decay thresholds. The no core shell model with continuum (NCSMC) recently predicted an s-wave resonance just above the proton-decay threshold of 7 Li at an excitation energy of 10.2 MeV. This potential case of a near-threshold resonance is dependent on the quantum mechanics of the p + 6 He fragments extended into the continuum. Further, the 6 He(d,n) 7 Li* reaction was employed in an attempt to populate this resonance and search for its proton decay via the invariant-mass method. No evidence of this resonance was found. However, the data collected in this search led to better constraints on the energy and width of the isobaric analog state (IAS) with (J π ,T) = (3/2 - , 3/2) and revealed a new weak resonance just above the IAS in energy, predicted by the NCSMC as a (J π , T ) = (3/2 – , 1/2) state and potentially a part of the antianalog structure.

Excited nucleon spectrum and structure studies with CLAS and CLAS12

The study of the spectrum and structure of excited nucleon states employing the electroproduction of exclusive reactions is an important avenue for exploring the nature of the non-perturbative strong interaction. The CLAS detector in Hall B has provided the dominant part of the available world data on most relevant meson electroproduction channels off the nucleon in the resonance region for Q2 up to 5 GeV2. Analyses of CLAS data for the exclusive channels πN, ηN, and π+π-p on a proton target have provided the only results available on the Q2 evolution of the electro-excitation amplitudes for the transitions from the initial photon-proton to the final N* states in the mass range up to W =1.8 GeV. These electrocouplings allow for exploration of the internal structure of the produced excited nucleon states. This work has made it clear that consistent results from independent analyses of several exclusive channels with different resonance hadronic decay parameters and non-resonant backgrounds but the same N* electro-excitation amplitudes, is essential to have confidence in the extracted results. Starting in early 2018, a program to study the spectrum and structure of N* states in various exclusive electroproduction channels using the new CLAS12 spectrometer commenced. These studies will probe the structure of N* states in the mass range up to W =3 GeV and for Q2 as low as 0.05 GeV2 and as high as 10-12 GeV2, thus providing a means to access N* structure information spanning a broad range of distance scales. Quasi-real photoproduction studies are also planned to search for additional N* states, the so-called hybrid baryons, for which the glue serves as an active structural component. In this talk the N* programs from both CLAS and CLAS12 will be reviewed.

15th order resonance terms using the decaying orbit of TETR-3

Fifteenth-order commensurability of the orbit of TETR-3 (1971-83B) is studied. The study is designed to obtain good discrimination of 15th-order resonances through a better range of inclinations. The first low inclination orbit, 33 deg, is used for this purpose; it is very sensitive to the high degree terms which were rather poorly represented by previously analyzed orbits.

Photoproduction of Lambda* Resonances using the CLAS Detector

This thesis presents the study of the reaction yp -> K^+Lambda* using the photo production data from the CLAS-g12 experiment performed in Hall B of Jefferson Laboratory. The decay of Lambda* resonances, Lambda(1520), Lambda(1670), and Lambda(1690), into two exclusive channels, Sigma+pi?and Sigma-pi+, is studied from the detected K+,pi+, and pi?particles. This work aims at understanding photoproduction mechanism to excited state baryons, and to facilitate phenomenological model predictions using precision experimental measurements. A good agreement is established for the Lambda(1520) differential cross sections with the previous CLAS measurements. The differential cross sections as a function of CM angle are extended to higher photon energies. Newly added are the differential cross sections as a function of invariant 4-momentum transfer, which is the natural variable to use for a theoretical model based on a Regge-exchange reaction mechanism. No new N* resonances decaying into the K+Lambda(1520) final state are found. The higher mass resonances, Lambda(1670)1/2- and Lambda(1690)3/2-, are studied for the first time using photoproduction. This work provides a model dependent preliminary cross sections for these excited states.
