Shape memory polymers

New shape memory polymer compositions, methods for synthesizing new shape memory polymers, and apparatus comprising an actuator and a shape memory polymer wherein the shape memory polymer comprises at least a portion of the actuator. A shape memory polymer comprising a polymer composition which physically forms a network structure wherein the polymer composition has shape-memory behavior and can be formed into a permanent primary shape, re-formed into a stable secondary shape, and controllably actuated to recover the permanent primary shape. Polymers have optimal aliphatic network structures due to minimization of dangling chains by using monomers that are symmetrical and that have matching amine and hydroxl groups providing polymers and polymer foams with clarity, tight (narrow temperature range) single transitions, and high shape recovery and recovery force that are especially useful for implanting in the human body.

Parallel projection—An improved return mapping algorithm for finite element modeling of shape memory alloys

Here, we present a novel finite element analysis of inelastic structures containing Shape Memory Alloys (SMAs). Phenomenological constitutive models for SMAs lead to material nonlinearities, that require substantial computational effort to resolve. Finite element analysis methods, which rely on Gauss quadrature integration schemes, must solve two sets of coupled differential equations: one at the global level and the other at the local, i.e. Gauss point level. In contrast to the conventional return mapping algorithm, which solves these two sets of coupled differential equations separately using a nested Newton procedure, we propose a scheme to solve the local and global differential equations simultaneously. In the process we also derive closed-form expressions used to update the internal/constitutive state variables, and unify the popular closest-point and cutting plane methods with our formulas. Numerical testing indicates that our method allows for larger thermomechanical loading steps and provides increased computational efficiency, over the standard return mapping algorithm.

Effect of Al substitution on the magnetocaloric properties of Ni-Co-Mn-Sn multifunctional alloys

Ni-Mn-based metamagnetic shape memory alloys have been extensively studied due to their multifunctional properties including magnetocaloric effect (MCE), magnetoresistance effect, and magnetic-field-induced strain. However, the large intrinsic thermal hysteresis of these alloys sets a limit on further development for practical applications. Here, with a few atomic percent Al substitution, we greatly reduced the thermal hysteresis and transformation temperature interval while maintaining the large magnetization difference (ΔM) between austenite and martensite. The simultaneous achievement of a large ΔM and low thermal hysteresis leads to a remarkable enhancement in MCE upon Al substitution, and a maximum magnetic entropy change of 31.6 J/kg K is achieved under a field of 5 T in Ni 39 Co 11 Mn 40 Sn 8 Al 2 . Furthermore, our in situ high-energy X-ray diffraction experiments show that the Ni 39 Co 11 Mn 40 Sn 8 Al 2 has good geometric compatibility between austenite and martensite, which accounts for the reduced thermal hysteresis in this alloy. This study is instructive for the development of high-performance magnetocaloric materials in the metamagnetic shape memory alloys.

First-principles investigation of phase stability in the Mg-Sc binary alloy

The recent discovery of shape memory behavior in Mg-Sc alloys has opened the door to the possibility of lightweight shape memory alloys. Very little is known, however, about martensitic phase transformations or about equilibrium phase stability in this alloy system. In this paper we report on a first-principles statistical mechanics study of zero Kelvin and finite temperature phase stability of hcp, bcc, and fcc based phases in the Mg-Sc binary. Our calculations reveal a rich array of phase transitions among the different low-temperature ordered and high-temperature disordered phases. Ground state orderings on hcp, bcc, and fcc belong to families of hierarchical structures containing rods of scandium atoms assembled in layers that repeat periodically. Both fcc and bcc are found to undergo a series of second-order phase transformations with increasing temperature until they completely disorder. A high degree of degeneracy is predicted at low and high temperatures among hcp, bcc, and fcc, a property that is likely to play an important role in the shape memory effects observed in this alloy.
