Concept for a large multi-mission amphibian aircraft

A very large aircraft has been proposed for meeting both civil cargo and military transport needs for 1995 and beyond. The concept includes a wide noncircular fuselage cross section with a low wing, thick inner wing section, fuselage-mounted engines, and an air cushion landing gear. The civil freighter operates independently of congested passenger airports, using sheltered water as a runway and a waterfront land site for parking and ground operations. The military transport can operate from a wide variety of surfaces and temporary bases. The air cushion landing gear weighs substantially less than conventional gear and permits the use of extended takeoff distance resulting in improved payload/gross weight ratio.

Spacelab flight simulated by two monkeys at CERMA

A semiautomatic module for two monkeys was designed. The module shelters two Rhesus monkeys seated side by side in a compartment, reducing the emotional stresses caused by isolation. Food pellets, water, and air are supplied and body wastes are automatically removed. Physiological and environmental parameters are continually monitored, making possible the performance of experiments concerning the pathophysiological mechanisms of the disorders of weightlessness. A ten day flight of the module in Spacelab was simulated.

Protective clothing textile research for space activities in the 1980's

Textile and clothing specifications for space activities are discussed, emphasizing a chronological and utilitarian role. New fabrication techniques led to the Mercury Space Suit, a constant-wear hybrid of the omni-environmental full pressure suit used by high-flying pilots of the 1950s. The Gemini program (1964-1966) provided the first specifically designed protective clothing assembly for both intra- and extravehicular operations. The G4C, used for EV (extravehicular) activities, protected the astronaut against solar radiation, heat loss, and meteoroid penetration. The clothing for the Apollo program (1968-1975) mirrored a greater concern for fire safety with Durette (a halogenated polyamide) and PBI (polybenzimadazole) widely used for intravehicular garments. With the advent of the Shuttle program, cabin pressure and composition were changed from 6 psi, 100% oxygen to 9-14 psi, 23.4% oxygen, 76.6% N2. As a result, 'off-the-shelf' materials were used without compromising fire safety. Reusability was stressed, as textile costs and durability were now important selection criteria noting that existing textile materials will probably be adequate for the next 20 years of space operations and research. A portable lunar survival shelter made of textiles is being developed; and a preliminary design for an EV 'tunnel suit system' (an access tunnel and homoform work station) is already in existence.

Investigation of Heat Transfer from a Stationary and Rotating Conical Forebody

The convective heat transfer from the surface of a conical forebody having a hemispherical nose, an included angle of approximately 30 deg, and. a maximum diameter of 18.9 inches was investigated in a wind tunnel for both stationary and. rotating operation. The range of test conditions included free-stream velocities up to 400 feet per second, rotational speeds up to 1200 rpm, and. angles of attack of 0 deg and 6 deg. Both a uniform surface temperature and a uniform heater input power density were used. The Nusselt-Reynolds number relations provided good correlation of the heat-transfer data for the complete operating range at 0 deg angle of attack with and without spinner rotation, and for 6deg angle of attack with rotation. Rotational speeds up to 1200 rpm had no apparent effect on the heat-transfer characteristics of the spinner. The results obtained at 6 deg angle of attack with rotation were essentially the same as those obtained at 0 deg angle of attack without rotation. The experimental heat-transfer characteristics in the turbulent flow region were consistently in closer agreement with the results predicted for a two-dimensional body than with those predicted. for a cone. For stationary operation at 60 angle of attack, the measured heat-transfer coefficients in the turbulent flow region were from 6 to 13 percent greater on the lower surface (windward. side) than on the upper surface (sheltered side) for corresponding surface locations. The spinner-nose geometry appeared to cause early boundary-layer transition. Transition was initiated at a fairly constant Reynolds number (based on surface distance from nose) of 8.0 x 10(exp 4). Transition was completed at Reynolds numbers less than 5.0 x 10(exp 5) for all conditions investigated.

Large, Easily Deployable Structures

Study of concepts for large space structures will interest those designing scaffolding, radio towers, rescue equipment, and prefabricated shelters. Double-fold, double-cell module was selected for further design and for zero gravity testing. Concept is viable for deployment by humans outside space vehicle as well as by remotely operated manipulator.

Hazards to space workers from ionizing radiation

A compilation of background information and a preliminary assessment of the potential risks to workers from the ionizing radiation encountered in space is provided. The report: (1) summarizes the current knowledge of the space radiation environment to which space workers will be exposed; (2) reviews the biological effects of ionizing radiation considered of major importance to a SPS project; and (3) discusses the health implications of exposure of populations of space workers to the radiations likely to penetrate through the shielding provided by the SPS work stations and habitat shelters of the SPS Reference System.

Configuration selection study for isolated loads using parabolic dish modules

A configuration tradeoff study has been conducted to determine optimum solar thermal parabolic dish power systems for isolated load applications. The specific application of an essentially constant power demand as required for MX missile shelters is treated. Supplying a continuous level of power with high reliability is shown to require a power system comprising modular parabolic dish power units where the heat engines of the modular power units can be driven by fossil fuels as well as solar-derived heat. Since constraints on reliability result in the provision of a power generating capability that exceeds the constant demand level, efficient utilization of the power system requires battery storage. Tradeoffs regarding the optimum size of storage are investigated as a function of the number of power modules and the cost of the fossil fuel which is used to meet the demand when insolation is unavailable and storage is depleted.

General-Purpose Icosahedral Structure

Scheme based on geodesic sphere approximated by regular icosahedron. Structure rigid and lightweight. Allows access to all subsystems and equipment from outside. Regular icosahedron constructed from triangular panels. Five panels meeting at each corner all rigidly attached to fivesided adapter. Strengthened version useful on Earth for rapidly-erectable temporary shelters, industrial structures, or playground equipment.

Evapotranspiration and remote sensing

There are three things required for evapotranspiration to occur: (1) energy (580 cal/gm) for the change of phase of the water; (2) a source of the water, i.e., adequate soil moisture in the surface layer or in the root zone of the plant; and (3) a sink for the water, i.e., a moisture deficit in the air above the ground. Remote sensing can contribute information to the first two of these conditions by providing estimates of solar insolation, surface albedo, surface temperature, vegetation cover, and soil moisture content. In addition there have been attempts to estimate precipitation and shelter air temperature from remotely sensed data. The problem remains to develop methods for effectively using these sources of information to make large area estimates of evapotranspiration.

Design considerations for high-power VHF radar transceivers: Phase matching long coaxial cables using a cable radar

The Poker Flat 49.92-MHz MST radar uses 64 phase-controlled transmitters in individual shelters distributed throughout the antenna array. Phase control is accomplished by sampling the transmitted pulse at the directional coupler of each transmitter and sending the sample pulse back to a phase-control unit. This method requires phase matching 64 long (256 meter) coaxial cables (RG-213) to within several electrical degrees. Tests with a time domain reflectometer showed that attenuation of high frequency components in the long RG-213 cable rounded the leading edge of the reflected pulse so that the cables could only be measured to within 50 cm (about 45 deg at 49.92 MHz). Another measurement technique using a vector voltmeter to compare forward and reflected phase required a directional coupler with unattainable directivity. Several other techniques were also found lacking, primarily because of loss in the long RG-213 cables. At this point it was realized that what was needed was a simple version of the phase-coherent clear-air radar, i.e., a cable radar. The design and operation of this cable are described.

Mars - Wind streak production as related to obstacle type and size

The characteristics of wind streaks associated with Martian craters and hills in the size range of 100 m to 80 km (corresponding to obstacle heights of a few to several hundred meters) have been analyzed from Viking Orbiter images. Both dark erosional and bright depositional streaks form over the entire obstacle size range, but there are preferred obstacle sizes for producing streaks. Bright streaks form more readily in association with relatively smaller obstacles than do dark streaks. Small obstacles produce both types of streaks more effectively than do large ones. Hills produce streaks as effectively as do craters of comparable height. Alternative explanations of bright streak formation are evaluated in terms of their ability to account for these observations. The most satisfactory models invoke blocking of atmospheric flow downwind of an obstacle and consequent deposition of dust within the sheltered zone.

An overview of medical-biological radiation hazards in earth orbits

The radiation exposure of crew members on space missions in LEO and GEO is evaluated in a general review. The radiation environment is characterized, taking the trapped radiation belts, solar flares, Galactic and solar cosmic rays, and secondary radiation into account and emphasizing the increased dosages produced by transient phenomena such as solar flares. The biological effects of space radiation in the individual cells, on the body as a whole, and on critical organs are summarized, and the exposure limits and shielding specifications (for spacecraft and for EVA suits) currently used by US mission planners are reviewed. For GEO, 4-g/sq cm Al-equivalent shielding is considered adequate under normal conditions, making EVA in this volatile environment questionable; for anomalously large solar flares, emergency shelter within 10-g/sq cm walls or the capability to retreat to a lower orbit is necessary.

Evaluation of AIS Data for Agronomic and Rangeland Vegetation: Preliminary Results for August 1984 Flight over Nebraska Sandhills Agricultural Laboratory

Since 1978 scientists from the Center for Agricultural Meteorology and Climatology at the University of Nebraska have been conducting research at the Sandhills Agricultural Laboratory on the effects of water stress on crop growth, development and yield using remote sensing techniques. We have been working to develop techniques, both remote and ground-based, to monitor water stress, phenological development, leaf area, phytomass production and grain yields of corn, soybeans and sorghum. Because of the sandy soils and relatively low rainfall at the site it is an excellent location to study water stress without the necessity of installing expensive rainout shelters. The primary objectives of research with the airborne imaging spectrometer (AIS) data collected during an August 1984 flight over the Sandhills Agricultural Laboratory are to evaluate the potential of using AIS to: (1) discriminate crop type; (2) to detect subtle architectural differences that exist among different cultivars or hybrids of agronomic crops; (3) to detect and quantify, if possible, the level of water stress imposed on the crops; and (4) to evaluate leaf area and biomass differences for different crops.

Remote sensing of atmosphere-surface interaction parameters

Examples are given of the accuracy of the results obtained from the HIRS 2/MSU (High Resolution Infrared Sounder and Microwave Sounding Unit) analysis of ocean, atmosphere, and land parameters. Sea surface temperatures are compared with available ship and buoy radiosonde data, and land surface temperatures are compared with shelter temperatures. The seasonal change in land and ocean skin surface temperature is reviewed. The distribution of clouds is examined and their opacities in the visible and infrared parts of the spectrum are compared.

Surface drilling technologies for Mars

We propose rock drilling and coring conceptual designs for the surface activities associated with a manned Mars mission. Straightforward extensions of equipment and procedures used on Earth are envisioned for the sample coring and shallow high explosive shot holes needed for tunneling and seismic surveying. A novel rocket exhaust jet piercing method is proposed for very rapid drilling of shot holes required for explosive excavation of emergency radiation shelters. Summaries of estimated equipment masses and power requirements are provided, and the indicated rotary coring rigs are scaled from terrestrial equipment and use compressed C02 from the Martian atmosphere for core bit cooling and cuttings removal. A mass of 120 kg and power of 3 kW(e) are estimated for a 10 m depth capability. A 100 m depth capacity core rig requires about 1150 kg and 32 kw(e). The rocket exhaust Jet equipment devised for shallow (3m) explosive emplacement shot holes requires no surface power beyond an electrical ignition system, and might have a 15 kg mass.

A comparative study of some mathematical models of the mean wind structure and aerodynamic drag of plant canopies

A semianalytical method for describing the mean wind profile and shear stress within plant canopies and for estimating the roughness length and the displacement height is presented. This method incorporates density and vertical structure of the canopy and includes simple parameterizations of the roughness sublayer and shelter factor. Some of the wind profiles examined are consistent with first-order closure techniques while others are consistent with second-order closure techniques. Some profiles show a shearless region near the base of the canopy; however, none displays a secondary maximum there. Comparing several different analytical expressions for the canopy wind profile against observations suggests that one particular type of profile (an Airy function which is associated with the triangular foliage surface area density distribution) is superior to the others. Because of the numerical simplicity of the methods outlined, it is suggested that they may be profitably used in large-scale models of plant-atmosphere exchanges.
