Method to simultaneously facilitate all jet physics tasks

Machine learning has become an essential tool in jet physics. Due to their complex, high-dimensional nature, jets can be explored holistically by neural networks in ways that are not possible manually. However, innovations in all areas of jet physics are proceeding in parallel. We show that specially constructed machine learning models trained for a specific jet classification task can improve the accuracy, precision, or speed of all other jet physics tasks. This is demonstrated by training on a particular multiclass generation and classification task and then using the learned representation for different generation and classification tasks, for datasets with a different (full) detector simulation, for jets from a different collision system ($pp$ versus $ep$), for generative models, for likelihood ratio estimation, and for anomaly detection. We consider our omnilearn approach thus as a jet-physics foundation model. It is made publicly available for use in any area where state-of-the-art precision is required for analyses involving jets and their substructure.

Nuclear Astrophysics in the Storage Ring: Background Suppressed Simultaneous Measurement of (p,γ) and (p,n) Reactions

We report the application of the new elimination of Rutherford elastic scattering technique for the measurement of proton-induced reaction cross sections utilizing stored ions decelerated to astrophysical energies. This approach results in a background reduction factor of about 1 order of magnitude, enabling the first measurement of a (p, n) cross section in a storage ring. Here, the reaction channels 124 Xe⁢(p,n) and 124 Xe⁢(p,γ) have been studied just above the neutron threshold energy. The new data provide valuable constraints for Hauser-Feshbach theory and extrapolation of the (p,γ) cross section to lower energies. Most importantly, for nuclei of limited availability, the method represents a powerful improvement to efficiently study proton-induced reactions at energies within or close to the astrophysical Gamow window, bringing many reaction measurements within reach that were previously inaccessible in the laboratory.

Simultaneous Overexpression of FERULOYL‐CoA 6′‐HYDROXYLASE 1 and COUMARIN SYNTHASE Leads to Coumarin‐Enriched Lignin and Improved Saccharification in Greenhouse‐ and Field‐Grown Poplar

ABSTRACT The urgent need for renewable resources has increased the interest in woody biomass to manufacture bio‐based products. However, lignin recalcitrance limits the enzymatic conversion of wood into fermentable sugars, posing a major challenge for biomass deconstruction. To address this problem, we aimed at incorporating the coumarin scopoletin into the lignin polymer of poplar ( Populus tremula × P . alba ) by expressing FERULOYL‐CoA 6′‐HYDROXYLASE 1 ( F6′H1 ) and COUMARIN SYNTHASE ( COSY ) in lignifying cells. Three constructs were evaluated: two bicistronic constructs, SCOP1 ( COSY followed by F6′H1 ) and SCOP2 ( F6′H1 followed by COSY ), and one monocistronic, SCOP3 (only F6′H1 ). SCOP1 poplars produced most free scopoletin without altering overall lignin, cellulose or hemicellulose content. SCOP2 poplars were overall less efficient in scopoletin production and most of these lines showed a severe biomass yield penalty, whereas SCOP3 caused plant lethality. NMR and metabolic analyses confirmed that scopoletin cross‐coupled with G and S monomers during lignification in SCOP1 lines. In addition to scopoletin, the detection of benzodioxane structures revealed the incorporation of dihydroxycoumarins. Overall coumarin incorporation in lignin amounted up to 2.3%. After alkaline pretreatment, wood from greenhouse‐grown SCOP1 poplars released up to 29% more glucose compared to the wild type upon limited saccharification. Field‐testing of three SCOP1 lines showed a 6 to 11% increase in saccharification efficiency, with the line containing the lowest scopoletin levels maintaining normal growth. These results demonstrate that engineering lignin composition in poplar can improve saccharification, and emphasize the importance of construct design, translational research and field validation.

Simultaneous Control of Unburned NH 3 and NO x Emissions From High Load Dual-Fuel Ammonia Operation on a High-Speed Diesel Engine Using a Cu-SCR System

Dual-fuel ammonia strategies are being investigated as a promising way to utilize NH 3 as an alternative fuel for internal combustion engines in the maritime sector. One of the remaining barriers to implementing dual-fuel NH 3 combustion strategies is understanding ways to minimize unburned NH 3 and nitrogen oxide (NO x ) emissions from these engines, both of which are elevated relative to a conventional diesel baseline. Selective catalytic reduction (SCR) systems are widely used for lean NO x emission controls for engines across transportation and stationary energy applications. SCR systems use a reducing agent, such as NH 3 , to react with NO x in the exhaust, converting it into nitrogen and water. Typically, NH 3 is injected into the exhaust as a urea solution. In dual-fuel NH 3 engines, where unburned NH 3 is present in the exhaust, an SCR system could be used to mitigate both NH 3 and NO x emissions. The presented work evaluates a commercial copper-zeolite SCR and ammonia slip catalyst system, designed for on-road diesel engine applications, for controlling unburned NH 3 and NO x emissions from a dual-fuel NH 3 combustion engine. The aftertreatment system was installed downstream of a single-cylinder four-stroke diesel engine that has been modified for dual-fuel ammonia use. Furthermore, the emissions were characterized by using a Fourier transform infrared spectrometer for both late- and early-injection diesel pilot strategies over three air–fuel equivalence ratios spanning from 1.6 to 1.0 at 1200 rpm and 12.6 bar IMEP g condition (with greater than 95% ammonia energy fraction). Initial findings indicate that the SCR achieves more than 99% NO x conversion with less than 50 ppm NH 3 slip at air–fuel equivalence ratios greater than 1.4 at the operating conditions investigated. However, these benefits are accompanied by additional N 2 O emissions that are formed over the Cu-SCR.

Simultaneous Celestial Navigation

GPS technology is used in a multitude of applications around the world for navigation. However, GPS can be contested or denied and thus alternatives to GPS are needed for positioning in high-consequence systems. This project investigates a non-RF based method to produce an estimated geolocation using stellar/celestial measurements in combination with measurements from inclinometers and a real time clock. The initial iteration of this method, developed in FY20/21, achieved an estimated location accuracy within approximately 3 kilometers of the true location with a 3-sigma bound of about 8 kilometers. The next iteration aims to enhance this technology further, targeting an estimation accuracy within 100 meters of the true location, representing a 30-fold improvement over the initial method.
