Gravothermal phase transition, black holes and space dimensionality

In the framework of gravothermal evolution of an ideal monatomic fluid, I examine the dynamical instability of the fluid sphere in (N+1) dimensions by exploiting Chandrasekhar’s criterion to each quasi-static equilibrium along the sequence of the evolution. Once the instability is triggered, it would probably collapse into a black hole if no other interaction halts the process. From this viewpoint, the privilege of (3+1)-dimensional spacetime is manifest, as it is the marginal dimensionality in which the ideal monatomic fluid is stable but not too stable. Moreover, it is the unique dimensionality that allows stable hydrostatic equilibrium with positive cosmological constant. While all higher dimensional (N > 3) spheres are genuinely unstable. In contrast, in (2+1)-dimensional spacetime it is too stable either in the context of Newton’s theory of Gravity or Einstein’s General Relativity. It is well-known that the role of negative cosmological constant is crucial to have the Banados-Teitelboim-Zanelli (BTZ) black hole solution and the equilibrium configurations of a fluid disk. Owing to the negativeness of the cosmological constant, there is no unstable configuration for a homogeneous fluid disk to collapse into a naked singularity, which supports the Cosmic Censorship Conjecture. However, BTZ holes of mass M BTZ > 0 could emerge from collapsing fluid disks. The implications of spacetime dimensionality are briefly discussed.

Einstein-Maxwell theory and the Weyl double copy

The Weyl double copy relates vacuum solutions in general relativity to Abelian gauge fields in Minkowski spacetime. In a previous work, we showed how the Weyl double copy can be extended to provide a treatment of external gravitational sources consistent with the classical Kerr-Schild double copy. Using this generalization, here we provide a complete double copy analysis of electrovacuum Petrov type D spacetimes. This includes the first analysis of the charged C-metric, whose single copy interpretation invokes the two-potential formalism of electrodynamics. Here, we also present the first double copy prescription for the Ricci spinor, which for non-accelerating spacetimes, takes a form similar to the original double copy relation for the Weyl spinor.

On the holographic dual of a topological symmetry operator

We study the holographic dual of a topological symmetry operator in the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence. Symmetry operators arise from topological field theories localized on a subspace of the boundary conformal field theory spacetime. We use bottom up considerations to construct the topological sector associated with their bulk counterparts. In particular, by exploiting the structure of entanglement wedge reconstruction we argue that the bulk counterpart has a nontopological world volume action, i.e., it describes a dynamical object. As a consequence, we find that there are no global 𝑝-form symmetries for 𝑝 ≥ 0 in asymptotically anti–de Sitter spacetimes, which includes the case of noninvertible symmetries. Provided one has a suitable notion of subregion-subregion duality, our argument for the absence of bulk global symmetries applies to more general spacetimes. These considerations also motivate us to consider for general QFTs (holographic or not) the notion of lower-form symmetries, namely, (−𝑚)-form symmetries for 𝑚 ≥ 2.

Geometric quantum states beyond the AdS/CFT correspondence

We characterize the quantum states dual to entanglement wedges in arbitrary spacetimes, in settings where the matter entropy can be neglected compared to the geometric entropy. In AdS/CFT, such states obey special entropy inequalities known as the holographic entropy cone. In particular, the mutual information of CFT subregions is monogamous (MMI). We extend this result to arbitrary spacetimes, using a recent proposal for the generalized entanglement wedge e ( a ) of a gravitating region a . Given independent input regions a , b , and c , we prove MMI: Area [ e ( a ) ] + Area [ e ( b ) ] + Area [ e ( c ) ] − Area [ e ( a b ) ] − Area [ e ( b c ) ] − Area [ e ( c a ) ] + Area [ e ( a b c ) ] ≤ 0 . We expect that the full holographic entropy cone can be extended to arbitrary spacetimes using similar methods. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Signatures of rotating black holes in quantum superposition

A new approach for operationally studying the effects of spacetime in quantum superpositions of semiclassical states has recently been proposed by some of the authors. This approach was applied to the case of a (2+1)-dimensional Bañados-Teitelboim-Zanelli (BTZ) black hole in a superposition of masses, where it was shown that a two-level system interacting with a quantum field residing in the spacetime exhibits resonant peaks in its response at certain values of the superposed masses. Here, we extend this analysis to a mass-superposed rotating BTZ black hole, considering the case where the two-level system corotates with the black hole in a superposition of trajectories. We find similar resonances in the detector response function at rational ratios of the superposed outer horizon radii, specifically in the case where the ratio of the inner and outer horizons is fixed. This suggests a connection with Bekenstein’s seminal conjecture concerning the discrete horizon spectra of black holes in quantum gravity, generalized to the case of rotating black holes. Here, our results further indicate that deeper insights into quantum-gravitational phenomena may be accessible via tools in relativistic quantum information and curved spacetime quantum field theory.

Subregion-subalgebra duality: Emergence of space and time in holography

In holographic duality, a higher dimensional quantum gravity system emerges from a lower dimensional conformal field theory (CFT) with a large number of degrees of freedom. We propose a formulation of duality for a general causally complete bulk spacetime region, called subregion-subalgebra duality, which provides a framework to describe how geometric notions in the gravity system, such as spacetime subregions, different notions of times, and causal structure, emerge from the dual CFT. Subregion-subalgebra duality generalizes and brings new insights into subregion-subregion duality (or equivalently entanglement wedge reconstruction). It provides a mathematically precise definition of subregion-subregion duality and gives an independent definition of entanglement wedges without using entropy. Geometric properties of entanglement wedges, including those that play a crucial role in interpreting the bulk as a quantum error correcting code, can be understood from the duality as the geometrization of the superadditivity of certain algebras. Using general boundary subalgebras rather than those associated with geometric subregions makes it possible to find duals for general bulk spacetime regions, including those not touching the boundary. Applying subregion-subalgebra duality to a boundary state describing a single-sided black hole also provides a precise way to define mirror operators. Published by the American Physical Society 2025

String correlators on $\text{AdS}_3$: Analytic structure and dual CFT

We continue our study of string correlators on Euclidean \text{AdS}_3 AdS 3 with pure NS-NS flux. The worldsheet and spacetime correlators have a rich analytic structure, which we analyse completely for genus 0 four-point functions. We show that correlators exhibit a simple behaviour near their singularities. The spacetime correlators are meromorphic functions in the \mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{R}) S L ( 2 , ℝ ) -spins, whose pole structure is shown to agree with the prediction of a recent proposal for the dual \text{CFT}_2 CFT 2 . Moreover, we also compute the residues of the spacetime correlators for some of the poles exactly and find again a perfect match with the proposal for the dual \text{CFT}_2 CFT 2 , thereby checking the duality for some non-trivial four-point functions exactly. Our computations simplify drastically in the tensionless limit of \mathrm{AdS}_3 \times \mathrm{S}^3 \times \mathbb{T}^4 A d S 3 × S 3 × 𝕋 4 where the behaviour near the poles gives in fact the exact answer. This paper is the third in a series with several installments.

Asymptotic structure of higher dimensional Yang-Mills theory

Using the covariant phase space formalism, we construct the phase space for non-Abelian gauge theories in (d+2)-dimensional Minkowski spacetime for any d ≥ 2, including the edge modes that symplectically pair to the low energy degrees of freedom of the gauge field. Despite the fact that the symplectic form in odd and even-dimensional spacetimes appear ostensibly different, we demonstrate that both cases can be treated in a unified manner by utilizing the shadow transform. Upon quantization, we recover the algebra of the vacuum sector of the Hilbert space and derive a Ward identity that implies the leading soft gluon theorem in (d+2)-dimensional spacetime.

A Unified Perspective on Poincaré and Galilei Relativity: I. Special Relativity

A semantic adjustment to what physicists mean by the terms ‘special relativity’ and ‘general relativity’ is suggested, which prompts a conceptual shift to a more unified perspective on physics governed by the Poincaré group and physics governed by the Galilei group. After exploring the limits of a unified perspective available in the setting of 4-dimensional spacetime, a particular central extension of the Poincaré group—analogous to the Bargmann group that is a central extension of the Galilei group—is presented that deepens a unified perspective on Poincaré and Galilei physics in a 5-dimensional spacetime setting. The immediate focus of this paper is classical physics on affine 4-dimensional and 5-dimensional spacetimes (‘special relativity’ as redefined here), including the electrodynamics that gave rise to Poincaré physics in the first place, but the results here may suggest the existence of a ‘Galilei general relativity’ more extensive than generally known, to be pursued in the sequel.

Black Holes and de Sitter Space as Time Mirrors

It is usually assumed that matter disappears together with the spacetime at the center of a Schwarzschild black hole (BH). Here, we find that if we impose a boundary condition that the field does not disappear at the BH center (that is, field flux into the singularity vanishes), the BH acts as a time mirror that totally reflects the infalling light and matter outside the BH. Namely, the reflected field propagates backward in time, passes the event horizon and moves away from the BH. In this case, a BH can be used as a time machine that allows us to send a signal into the past. We also show that de Sitter spacetime acts as a time mirror provided particles do not disappear from the spacetime at r=∞.

Unveiling horizons in quantum critical collapse

Critical gravitational collapse offers a unique window into regimes of arbitrarily high curvature, culminating in a naked singularity arising from smooth initial data — thus providing a dynamical counterexample to weak cosmic censorship. Near the critical regime, quantum effects from the collapsing matter are expected to intervene before full quantum gravity resolves the singularity. Despite its fundamental significance, a self-consistent treatment has so far remained elusive. In this work, we perform a one-loop semiclassical analysis using the robust anomaly-based method in the canonical setup of Einstein gravity minimally coupled to a free, massless scalar field. Focusing on explicitly solvable near-critical solutions in both 2 + 1 and 3 + 1 dimensions, we analytically solve the semiclassical Einstein equations and obtain controlled, quantitative results for several long-standing questions within the dominant s-wave sector. We find that regularity uniquely selects a Boulware-like quantum state, encoding genuine vacuum polarization effects from the collapsing matter. Remarkably, the resulting quantum corrections manifest as a growing mode. Horizon-tracing analyses, incorporating both classical and quantum modes, reveal the emergence of a finite mass gap, signaling a phase transition from classical Type II to quantum-modified Type I behavior, thereby providing a quantum enforcement of the weak cosmic censorship. The most non-trivial aspect of our analysis involves dealing with non-conformal matter fields in explicitly time-dependent critical spacetimes. Along the way, we uncover intriguing and previously underexplored features of quantum field theory in curved spacetime.

Accelerating boundary analog of a Kerr black hole

An accelerated boundary correspondence (i.e. a flat spacetime accelerating mirror trajectory) is derived for the Kerr spacetime, with a general formula that ranges from the Schwarzschild limit (zero angular momentum) to the extreme maximal spin case (yielding asymptotic uniform acceleration). Here, the beta Bogoliubov coefficients reveal the particle spectrum is a Planck distribution at late times with temperature cooler than a Schwarzschild black hole, due to the 'spring constant' analog of angular momentum. The quantum stress tensor indicates a constant emission of energy flux at late times consistent with eternal thermal equilibrium.

Kinematic Flow and the Emergence of Time

Perhaps the most basic question we can ask about cosmological correlations is how their strength changes as we smoothly vary kinematic parameters. The answer is encoded in differential equations that govern this evolution in kinematic space. In this Letter, we introduce a new perspective on these differential equations. We show that, in the simplified setting of conformally coupled scalars in power-law Friedmann-Robertson-Walker spacetimes, the equations for arbitrary tree-level processes can be obtained from a small number of simple combinatorial rules. While this “kinematic flow” is defined purely in terms of boundary data, it reflects the physics of bulk time evolution. The unexpected regularity of the equations suggests the existence of an autonomously defined mathematical structure from which cosmological correlations and the time evolution of the associated spacetime emerge.

Reflections on Noether’s second theorem and the energy-momentum tensor

Through symmetry of the action under global spacetime translations, Noether’s first theorem infamously entails an energy-momentum tensor (EMT) that is neither symmetric nor gauge-invariant. In a prior work [Phys. Rev. D 106, 125012 (2022)], I had obtained a symmetric and gauge-invariant EMT by using Noether’s second theorem instead, with local spacetime translations as the symmetry group. However, the derivation therein was flawed, containing a faulty assumption about the transformation rule for spinor fields. In this work, I revisit the derivation of the previous work, both correcting the faulty step and simplifying the derivation for broader accessibility. The end result is an EMT for quantum chromodynamics that is gauge-invariant, but not symmetric.

BMS symmetry via AdS/CFT

With a view to understanding extended-BMS symmetries in the framework of the AdS 4 /CFT 3 correspondence, asymptotically AdS geometries are constructed with null impulsive shockwaves involving a discontinuity in superrotation parameters. The holographic dual is proposed to be a two-dimensional Euclidean defect conformal field localized on a particular timeslice in a three-dimensional conformal field theory on de Sitter spacetime. The defect conformal field theory generates a natural action of the Virasoro algebra. The large radius of curvature limit ℓ → ∞ yields spacetimes with nontrivial extended-BMS charges corresponding to a single set of Virasoro charges.

Conformal wavefunctions for graviton amplitudes

The extended-BMS algebra of asymptotically flat spacetime contains an SO(3, 1) subgroup that acts by conformal transformations on the celestial sphere. It is of interest to study the representations of this subgroup associated with gravitons. To reduce the equation of motion to a Schrodinger-like equation it is necessary to impose a non-covariant gauge condition. Using these solutions, leading-order gauge invariant Weyl scalars are then computed and decomposed into families of unitary principal series representations. An invertible holographic mapping is constructed between these unitary principal series operators and massless spin-2 perturbations of flat spacetime.

Twice upon a time: timelike-separated quantum extremal surfaces

The Python’s Lunch conjecture for the complexity of bulk reconstruction involves two types of nonminimal quantum extremal surfaces (QESs): bulges and throats, which differ by their local properties. The conjecture relies on the connection between bulk spatial geometry and quantum codes: a constricting geometry from bulge to throat encodes the bulk state nonisometrically, and so requires an exponentially complex Grover search to decode. However, thus far, the Python’s Lunch conjecture is only defined for spacetimes where all QESs are spacelike-separated from one another. Here we explicitly construct (time-reflection symmetric) spacetimes featuring both timelike-separated bulges and timelike-separated throats. Interestingly, all our examples also feature a third type of QES, locally resembling a de Sitter bifurcation surface, which we name a bounce. By analyzing the Hessian of generalized entropy at a QES, we argue that this classification into throats, bulges and bounces is exhaustive. We then propose an updated Python’s Lunch conjecture that can accommodate general timelike-separated QESs and bounces. Notably, our proposal suggests that the gravitational analogue of a tensor network is not necessarily the time-reflection symmetric slice, even when one exists.

Constraints on long-range forces in de Sitter space

The representation theory of de Sitter space admits partially massless (PM) particles, but whether such particles can participate in consistent interacting theories remains unclear. We investigate the consistency of theories containing PM fields, particularly when these fields are coupled to gravity. Our strategy exploits the fact that PM fields correspond to partially conserved currents on the spacetime boundary, which generate symmetries. These symmetries place stringent constraints on correlation functions of charged operators, allowing us to test the consistency of a proposed bulk spectrum. When the assumed operator content violates these constraints, the corresponding bulk theory is ruled out. Applying this framework, we show that, in four-dimensional de Sitter space, PM fields of spin 2 or 3 (at depth 0) cannot couple consistently to gravity: such couplings necessitate additional massive fields, which are inevitably non-unitary. In higher dimensions, however, the constraints can be satisfied without violating unitarity if further PM fields are included. The resulting structure leads to additional charge conservation laws, which suggests that consistency may ultimately require an infinite tower of higher-spin PM fields, akin to the situation for ordinary higher-spin symmetries. The methods developed here provide powerful constraints on possible long-range interactions in de Sitter space and delineate the landscape of consistent quantum field theories in cosmological spacetimes.
