Arctic Black Carbon Aerosol Deposition Study North Slope of Alaska 2020- ACSM Measurements

Particles are removed from the atmosphere through both wet and dry deposition. These processes are poorly understood, though they constitute important uncertainties in climate and air quality models. This project aims to use observational constraints on particle fluxes to improve model representations of dry deposition. In support of black carbon (SP2) and particles (UHSAS) flux measurements at the meteorological tower, we measured non-refractory chemically-speciated aerosol composition with an Aerosol Chemical Speciation Monitor at the the NSA Central Facility (C1). ACSM measurements were made between 9 Sept and 26 Oct 2021. This site is a coastal tundra location, and received snow during the project.

Why are Lead Iodide‐Based Perovskite Precursor Inks Yellow?

A challenge faced by metal halide perovskite (MHP) photovoltaics is scaling up solution deposition processes to realize rapid and inexpensive manufacturing. The challenge lies in completely understanding and controlling solution speciation, nucleation, and self-assembly of iodoplumbate complexes during solvent evaporation as the liquid transforms into gels and solids. An accurate description of solution species, at all points in the transformation, is a prerequisite to design robust and reliable processes. Here, in this study, the common assumption that initial monoplumbate solution species typically invoked (e.g., [PbI 6 ] 4− ) are certainly not the origin of optical absorbance at >400 nm wavelengths is disproved, as are many large particles of common “intermediate” iodoplumbate phases with face- or edge-sharing connectivity. Instead, a new perspective is offered, involving (partially) corner-sharing iodo(poly)plumbates (>1 Pb 2+ per complex) that experience highly dynamic chemical environments. It is outlined how the MHP field would benefit by elucidating these phenomena. Future work is required to determine the size and kinetic behavior of polyplumbate species, and contextualize these findings in relation to broader trends in materials chemistry beyond MHPs. Ultimately, a complete explanation for the solution speciation, optical absorbance signatures, and the color of MHP precursor inks remains an open challenge to the community.

Mobilization of mercury from contaminated creekbank soils

The industrial use of mercury (Hg) led to the contamination of numerous watersheds worldwide, including the East Fork Poplar Creek (EFPC) in Tennessee, USA. Mercury can accumulate in creek banks and floodplain soils and is mobilized into downstream environments due to erosion from precipitation and flooding. Here, this study aimed to evaluate the geochemical conditions contributing to the release of Hg from contaminated soils in this watershed. Bank soil samples from the EFPC watershed with total Hg concentrations ranging from 27.2 to 1,425 mg·kg −1 were used in a series of batch experiments with artificial creek water at a solid-to-solution ratio of 1:30 to assess Hg release. Additional experiments examined Hg release across different soil size fractions and solid-to-solution ratios, as well as the effect of dissolved organic matter and time on Hg mobilization. Mercury release ranged from 0.011 to 0.17% of the total soil Hg and is correlated with total Hg concentrations. Variations in release among size fractions suggested heterogeneous distribution of labile Hg species. Results indicated two distinct solubility regimes depending on solid-to-solution ratios. Dissolved organic matter enhanced Hg release, and time-dependent experiments showed that changes in mercury speciation could decrease dissolved Hg concentrations over time. Identifying conditions that promote Hg mobilization from contaminated soils improves our understanding of Hg fluxes into downstream environments. Key factors influencing mercury release include soil characteristics, water chemistry, and temporal changes in mercury speciation.

Trace elements and their isotopes in streams and rivers

The occurrence and speciation of trace elements in streams and rivers are controlled by interconnected hydrogeological, biogeochemical, and anthropogenic factors that include rock weathering, climate, vegetation, and land use within the watershed. This chapter provides a broad overview of trace element abundance, speciation, and mobility in streams and rivers, including an assessment of how trace elements are partitioned into dissolved, colloidal, and particulate phases. We also discuss how trace elements are mobilized into stream networks and transformed during transport. Select isotopic systems are reviewed to provide examples of how isotopic analyses can be used to understand geochemical and anthropogenic processes.

Temperature effects on cobalt hydroxide–cobalt carbonate competitive growth on carbonate surfaces

Cobalt (Co), a critical metal essential for various environmental and industrial processes, undergoes speciation and immobilization in natural systems, primarily interacting with existing mineral surfaces. Understanding the underlying mechanisms of Co immobilization on abundant carbonate surfaces under different environmental conditions is critical for predicting Co mobility, availability, and recovery. In this study, we investigated the temperature-dependent competition between CoCO 3 and Co(OH) 2 formation on calcite (CaCO 3 ) and magnesite (MgCO 3 ) surfaces. Using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), we analyzed carbonate substrates exposed to CoCl 2 solutions at varying concentrations (0–500 μM) and temperatures (22, 50, and 80 °C). Magnesite surfaces promoted CoCO 3 formation due to its low lattice mismatch with sphaerocobaltite (CoCO 3 ). However, this slow-growing CoCO 3 component was progressively outcompeted by Co(OH) 2 formation as the temperature and/or initial Co concentration increased. On calcite surfaces, the poor lattice mismatch between calcite and sphaerocobaltite led to Co(OH) 2 outcompeting CoCO 3 formation at all three temperatures. These findings provide critical insights into the roles of substrate composition, solution chemistry, and temperature in controlling Co speciation and mobility. They carry important implications for environmental transport, geochemical cycling, and industrial recovery of cobalt in carbonate-rich systems.

Experimental and fuel-surrogates modeling study of the high-pressure pyrolysis of specialty cetane number fuels: implications for fall-off in ethylene unimolecular dissociation

Single pulse shock tube experiments were conducted at 50 atm nominal pressure and 4 ms nominal reaction time over a temperature range of 900–1800 K, to study the pyrolysis speciation of a multi-component jet fuel, F-24, and six cetane number (CN) specialty fuels - CN30, CN35, CN40, CN45, CN50, and CN55. Gas chromatography (GC) was used to qualitatively and quantitatively analyze the post shock gases. The relationship between the formation of key pyrolysis species and the chemically controlled combustion propensity as reflected by the cetane number of each fuel was examined. A surrogate-based mechanism from the CRECK Modelling Group and chemical-functional group based optimized surrogates (CFGO) were used to simulate the pyrolysis speciation results. The model was able to capture the chemistry of most species except two important pyrolysis intermediates – ethylene and acetylene. Chemical kinetic analyses were performed to identify the important reactions which affect the chemistry of these species; however, the rate parameters of critical reactions were found to be unsuitable for simulating the present high-pressure studies. Here, to address this unsuitability, a theory-based fall-off analysis for three reactions representing the decomposition of ethylene and subsequent formation of acetylene was performed, and these are included in an updated version of the CRECK mechanism. This update resolves discrepancies between the experimental results and simulations for ethylene and acetylene. Reaction flux analyses using the updated surrogate model were also performed to identify the important reaction pathways responsible for the formation of crucial species and to provide an analysis of the chemistry of complex multi-component fuel systems. The fundamental reactions responsible for driving pyrolysis chemistry were greatly influenced by the chemical functional groups present in these fuels. In addition to updating the rate parameters of specific reactions to improve modeling, this study also emphasizes the effectiveness of the fuel-surrogate approach, where surrogates representing the chemical functional group composition of the parent fuel serve as a valuable tool for predicting the combustion chemistry of novel fuels.

Hurricanes and turbulent floods threaten arsenic-contaminated coastal soils and vulnerable communities

Coastal environments, particularly those adjacent to Superfund sites, are at increased risk of contaminant release during natural disasters, posing serious threats to nearby communities. To investigate this issue, we employed an advanced laboratory flood simulator to impose arsenic-contaminated sediments to turbulent flooding events. We further monitored changes in arsenic collocation and solid-phase speciation using advanced synchrotron radiation-based techniques to understand the impacts of flooding on arsenic mobility. Our results demonstrate that turbulent conditions significantly enhance the resuspension of arsenic-rich sediments, resulting in increased arsenic release into the water. This mobilization is driven by the erosion of the reduced sediments and the redox-mediated transformation and dissolution of Fe and Mn (oxyhydr) oxides, which promote the release of As(III). We found that arsenic speciation on resuspended particles is closely tied to shear stress, with As(V) prevailing at low stress and the more toxic As(III) dominating at higher stress levels. In the post-erosion phase, solid-phase As(III) decreased while dissolved As(III) increased, indicating ongoing desorption. The persistence of multiple arsenic species on resuspended particles marks them as potential long-range transport vectors. Thus, the environmental impact of flooding and sediment resuspension extends beyond the event itself, raising longer-term concerns for arsenic mobility. Our comprehensive geospatial analysis revealed substantial overlap between arsenic-contaminated soils and regions at high risk of flooding and hurricanes across the conterminous United States. This overlap disproportionately impacts economically disadvantaged and marginalized communities. Approximately 40 million Americans reside within 10 kilometers of these high-risk contaminated zones, with nearly 28 million exposed to hurricane threats and around 18 million vulnerable to flooding risks. Alarmingly, over 40% of those affected by hurricanes and 33% of those impacted by flooding belong to underrepresented minority and low-income populations. These findings highlight the urgent need for targeted mitigation strategies to protect public health and address environmental justice concerns.

The solubility of NdPO 4 and DyPO 4 and stability of Nd and Dy chloride and hydroxyl complexes as a function of pH and salinity to 450 °C

The mobility of rare earth elements (REE) in geological systems is often controlled by the stability of monazite and xenotime, which are important hosts for the light and heavy REE. These REE phosphates constitute important resources and provide information on ore formation conditions and timing due to their uses as geothermometers and geochronometers. While the thermodynamic properties for these minerals are well-established up to high temperature and pressure, the properties for the aqueous REE complexes are not well constrained with limited information up to 300 °C. In this study, the solubility of synthetic NdPO 4 and DyPO 4 endmembers were measured in hydrothermal sub- to supercritical NaCl-bearing aqueous solutions from 350 at saturated water vapor pressure to 450 °C at 700 bar. The speciation of Nd and Dy was determined in acidic to alkaline solutions (pH 25 °C values from 2 to 10), and indicates that the hydroxyl species REE(OH) 2 + and REE(OH) 3 0 predominate at low salinity (0.01 mol/kg NaCl) with some contribution of REE chloride species REECl 2+ and REECl 2 + in acidic fluids. The REE phosphate solubility measured in these experiments is up to two orders of magnitude higher than predicted using existing thermodynamic properties from literature for aqueous species extrapolated from lower temperature data to supercritical conditions. To address this discrepancy, the thermodynamic properties of the REE aqueous species were optimized using GEMSFITS to derive the formation constants for the REE chloride (β Cl ) and hydroxyl (β OH ) complexes in the studied temperature range. This study highlights the importance of the hydroxyl species REE(OH) 2 + and REE(OH) 3 0 over a wide range of pH and temperature. As a result, the revised thermodynamic properties for Dy and Nd chloride and hydroxyl species more accurately predict the solubility of NdPO 4 and DyPO 4 and provide insight into the speciation and mobility of the light and heavy REE in hydrothermal supercritical fluids in the crust.

ab initio Sub-Mechanism Development for Cyclopentene Oxidation

To accurately predict low-temperature oxidation behavior, chemical kinetics mechanisms must contain complete reaction networks that include detailed consumption reactions of intermediates produced directly from hydroperoxyalkyl radicals, Q̇OOH, which undergo competing unimolecular reactions and bimolecular reactions with O2. Rates of chain-branching are governed by the flux between the two competing pathways, and inherently depend on temperature, pressure, and oxygen concentration. Neglect of consumption pathways for major oxidation intermediates leads to mechanism truncation error that is ameliorated by expanding the level of detail included in sub-mechanisms and employing ab initio methods for computing rates of elementary reactions and thermochemical properties of species involved. In the present work, an ab initio-derived sub-mechanism is developed using AutoMech to model the chemical kinetics of cyclopentene, a major product of cyclopentane oxidation. The ab initio sub-mechanism builds on a detailed mechanism developed using Reaction Mechanism Generator (RMG) for the specific purpose of determining the extent to which replacing cyclopentene-specific reactions and species with quantum chemical computations reduces model inaccuracies resulting from mechanism truncation error. In an effort to minimize interference from other reactions present during the formation of cyclopentene from cyclopentyl + O2, providing a narrower experimental scope, the model is compared against speciation measurements from jet-stirred reactor (JSR) experiments on cyclopentene oxidation. The experiments utilize vacuum ultraviolet-absorption spectroscopy and mass spectrometry for isomer-resolved speciation of intermediates at 835 Torr from 700 – 950 K. [O2]-dependent experiments were also conducted from 0.057 – 2.01 · 1018 molecules cm–3 at 825 K to examine the influence of oxygen on species profiles. Model predictions using the ab initio-revised mechanism yielded significant improvements in species profiles for both the temperature- and [O2]-dependent measurements, owing in part to increased rates of HOȮ and H2O2 production, which underscores the influence of theoretical calculations of reaction rates involving species produced from Ṙ + O2 such as cyclopentene.

Ion Distribution and Cation Exchange at Mica–Electrolyte Interfaces Probed with Deep Potential Molecular Dynamics

Here, we investigate the Stern layer structure and cation exchange mechanism at muscovite mica-electrolyte interfaces using nanosecond timescale molecular dynamics simulations based on deep neural network interatomic potentials trained on Density Functional Theory (DFT) data. Focusing on mica with exposed surface K + interfaced with aqueous NaCl and mica with surface Na + interfaced with KCl solution, we find that K + remains predominantly in inner-sphere configurations, while Na + exhibits notable populations in outer-sphere states. Most importantly, our simulations show that contact with an electrolyte solution results in the co-adsorption of multiple cation species, making the mica surface locally overcharged and thus reshaping the cation speciation in a manner that enhances the tendency of neighboring surface cations to desorb. These findings are consistent with recent experimental observations that co-adsorption of different cation species induces changes in cation speciation and slow kinetics of cation exchange at the muscovite-water interface, providing a basis for their detailed understanding.

Breaking the Neptunyl Barrier: Direct Access to Neptunium(IV) in Aqueous Solution via Polyoxometalate-Mediated Reduction and Stabilization

Neptunium exhibits truly unique chemistry as its speciation is dominated by the neptunyl(V) ion (NpO 2 + ). Here, in this study, we describe the spontaneous destabilization and reduction of neptunyl(V) via complexation to the Keggin-type polyoxometalate (POM) ligand PW 11 O 39 7– . The POM-mediated reduction of NpO 2 + does not require any reducing agent and occurs within minutes, at room temperature, and in aqueous solution. The resulting [Np(PW 11 O 39 ) 2 ] 10- complex (Np(PW 11 ) 2 ) remains soluble, water-stable, and air-stable for weeks and persists over an extended acidity range. Single-crystal structure, solid-state Raman and UV–visible absorbance characterization of Np(PW 11 ) 2 revealed a mixed alpha/beta isomery of the Keggin ion, forming an unprecedented 50:50 mixture of Np(α-PW 11 ) 2 and Np(α-PW 11 )(β-PW 11 ). Experiments with other tetravalent ions (i.e., Zr 4+ , Hf 4+ , Ce 4+ , and Th 4+ ) indicate that the occurrence of the beta isomer is specific to Np 4+ and independent of the cation’s size. Solution-state characterization of the Np-PW 11 system via UV-visible-NIR absorbance, 31 P NMR, VT NMR, and relaxometry further elucidated the speciation. Moreover, comparative experiments with uranium revealed that the two types of actinyl ions (UO 2 2+ vs NpO 2 + ) undergo drastically different reactions in the presence of PW 11 . UO 2 2+ is not reduced but instead uses PW 11 as a phosphate reservoir and precipitates as uranyl phosphate.

BEAST DB: Grand-Canonical Database of Electrocatalyst Properties

We present BEAST DB, an open-source database comprised of ab initio electrochemical data computed using grand-canonical density functional theory in implicit solvent at consistent calculation parameters. The database contains over 20,000 surface calculations and covers a broad set of heterogeneous catalyst materials and electrochemical reactions. Calculations were performed at self-consistent fixed potential as well as constant charge to facilitate comparisons to the computational hydrogen electrode. This article presents common use cases of the database to rationalize trends in catalyst activity, screen catalyst material spaces, understand elementary mechanistic steps, analyze the electronic structure, and train machine learning models to predict higher fidelity properties. Users can interact graphically with the database by querying for individual calculations to gain a granular understanding of reaction steps or by querying for an entire reaction pathway on a given material using an interactive reaction pathway tool. BEAST DB will be periodically updated, with planned future updates to include advanced electronic structure data, surface speciation studies, and greater reaction coverage.

Soft X-ray Emission Spectroscopy of Phosphorus Compounds for Energy Conversion and Storage

Phosphorus (P) is a ubiquitous component of materials for energy conversion and storage. Despite the effectiveness of soft X-ray emission spectroscopy (XES) to characterize these complex materials, XES studies of P-containing compounds are still largely missing. In this investigation, the electronic structure and XES signatures from the P L 2,3 -edge are probed for nine solid-state P-containing compounds characterized by various oxidation states and chemical environments: GaP (3−) , InP (3−) , red-P (0) , H 3 P (3+) O 3 , Na 2 H 2 P 2 (4+) O 6 , H 3 P (5+) O 4 , KH 2 P (5+) O 4 , Na 2 HP (5+) O 4 , and InP (5+) O 4 . The XES spectrum of each material exhibits distinct spectral fingerprints, which provide a robust basis for the speciation of complex P-containing samples. Density functional theory calculations shed light on the electronic structure of selected materials and particularly on the effect of phosphorus-oxygen hybridization. This study provides a comprehensive understanding of P L 2,3 XES spectral fingerprints across a wide range of oxidation states and chemical environments. These data sets and insights pave the way for dedicated future work, such as in situ and operando investigations of P-containing compounds in energy-related applications, where speciation of P compounds is needed.

Effect of Solvent on the Local Structure, Dynamics, and Vibrational Density of States in Sn-BEA Zeolite

Lewis acid zeolites are attractive catalysts for epoxidation and biomass valorization, as they are highly active and selective in the liquid phase and can operate at or near ambient conditions. While a rich experimental literature exists on liquid-phase Lewis acid zeolite catalysis, our understanding of the molecular organization and solvent dynamics in the vicinity of Lewis acid sites with differing metal site speciation remains limited. In this work, we investigate the molecular coordination and diffusion of two common solvents (methanol and water) around the closed and open Sn-BEA zeolite active sites using molecular dynamics simulations with a machine-learned interatomic potential trained on ab initio molecular dynamics trajectories. Molecular dynamics simulations reveal that introducing active sites significantly enhances local order in the first and second solvation shells compared to the pure silica case. For methanol, both closed and open active sites are singly coordinated, while more than two water molecules coordinate the open site. In contrast to methanol, we observed that water molecules dissociate, leading to the formation of additional Sn-OH and silanol groups away from the active site. The diffusion coefficients of water and methanol are functions of the solvent population in the pore. Here, our work provides insights into how active site speciation in Lewis acid zeolites affects solvent coordination, diffusion, and vibrational signature. This information is foundational for catalyst design and optimization of liquid-phase catalytic processes in zeolites. It also demonstrates the suitability of machine-learned interatomic potentials for modeling reactive systems, enabling sufficiently long trajectories for appropriate statistical averaging.

Heterogeneous and Framework-Bound Copper Species Contribute to Catalytic Partial Methane Oxidation in Cu–Chabazite Zeolites

The relationship between continuous partial methane oxidation (PMO) rates and Cu site speciation in Cu-CHA zeolite catalysts is explored through differential rate measurements across a series of samples of varying compositions combined with density functional theory, first-principles thermodynamics, and statistical models that characterize Cu speciation. Under continuous PMO conditions (573 K, 0.07 kPa O 2 , 3 kPa H 2 O), Cu ions are shown to anchor to the CHA framework in both monomeric (Z 2 Cu and Z 2 CuH 2 O) and dimeric (O- and OH-bridged Cu) forms that are sensitive to the identity of the local framework anchoring site. Consequently, across the studied compositional range, Cu-CHA catalysts are predicted to contain a mixture of monomeric and dimeric Cu sites. Cu-normalized CH 3 OH formation rates extrapolated to zero conversion reflect contributions from multiple site types. Predicted CH 3 OH formation rates indicate that the Cu site reactivity toward CH 4 is influenced by zeolite composition and is likely limited by the reduction half-cycle.

Harvest Initiated Volatile Organic Compound Emissions from In-Field Tall Wheatgrass

While crop and grassland usage continues to increase, the full diversity of plant-specific volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from these ecosystems, including their implications for atmospheric chemistry and carbon cycling, remains poorly understood. It is particularly important to investigate VOCs in the context of potential biofuels: aside from the implications of largescale land use, harvest may shift both the flux and speciation of emitted VOCs. To this point, we evaluate the diversity of VOCs emitted both pre and postharvest from “Alkar” tall wheatgrass (Thinopyrum ponticum), a candidate biofuel that exhibits greater tolerance to frost and saline land compared to other grass varieties. Mature plants grown under field conditions (n = 6) were sampled for VOCs both pre- and postharvest (October 2022). Via hierarchical clustering of emitted VOCs from each plant, we observe distinct “volatilomes” (diversity of VOCs) specific to the pre- and postharvest conditions despite plant-to-plant variability. In total, 50 VOCs were found to be unique to the postharvest tall wheatgrass volatilome, and these unique VOCs constituted a significant portion (26%) of total postharvest signal. While green leaf volatiles (GLVs) dominate the speciation of postharvest emissions (e.g., 54% of unique postharvest VOC signal was due to 1-penten-3-ol), we demonstrate novel postharvest VOCs from tall wheatgrass that are under characterized in the context of carbon cycling and atmospheric chemistry (e.g., 3-octanone). Continuing evaluations will quantitatively investigate tall wheatgrass VOC fluxes, better informing the feasibility and environmental impact of tall wheatgrass as a biofuel.

Electrochemical Behavior of Cerium at an Indium Tin-Doped Oxide Electrode in Acidic Media

The redox behavior and speciation of cerium at mesoporous thin films composed of nanoparticles of indium tin-doped oxide (nITO) electrodes were characterized in pH 4.8, 0.1 M acetate buffer and both 0.1 and 1 M HNO 3 using electrochemical techniques and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Anodic deposition of ceria species from Ce(III) to the nITO electrode was achieved under all solvent conditions via spontaneous condensation of electrochemically generated ceric hydroxide species. In 1 M nitric acid, the rate of CeO 2 dissolution is on the same order as CeO 2 deposition, resulting in negligible amounts of CeO 2 electrodeposited at the nITO surface. The cathodic stripping of CeO 2 from the nITO substrate deposited in 0.1 M nitric acid or pH 4.8 acetate buffer follows a 2-step process where Ce(IV)-oxide is initially reduced to an unstable Ce(III)-oxide species that rapidly undergoes acid catalyzed dissolution to yield soluble Ce(III) (aq) . These findings provide a foundation for the pH and anodic potential controlled deposition of CeO 2 thin films to ITO substrates, which can aid in the development of materials composed of ceria. As a result, they can also be used to infer likely analogous actinide redox behavior and speciation at these electrodes.

Experimental Investigation of Uranium and Iron Condensation from High-Temperature Plasma Conditions

We used a plasma flow reactor (PFR) to generate synthetic fallout nanoparticles from vapor-phase condensation of two different input concentrations of uranium and iron analytes (U/Fe = 1:1 and 1:2). Synthetic fallout from complex chemical matrices (e.g., mixtures of U and Fe) has not been generated in this setup before and allows for the observation of relative condensation and fractionation of nuclear debris. Experiments were conducted under two different temperature histories with variations in particle flow patterns along the PFR. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observation and analysis of the nanoparticles revealed variations in speciation of uranium oxides (UO 2 and α-UO 3 ) depending on the competition between flow mixing and oxygen sequestration by iron. A ternary metal oxide, UFeO 4 , was observed in addition to iron oxides (e.g., FeO and Fe 3 O 4 ), which suggests that fallout models should account for chemical speciation of ternary metal oxides (i.e., UFeO 4 ) and their relative condensation behaviors in addition to those of singular metal oxides (e.g., FeO and UO 2 ). X-ray Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS) elemental maps showed that some particles had Fe-rich cores surrounded by U-rich regions. This suggests that either condensed U oxides coagulate onto molten Fe oxides or that the increase in iron analyte concentration might drive the system toward a higher degree of supersaturation, leading to earlier formation of iron oxide particles and providing an energetically favored pathway for nucleation of uranium oxides around iron oxide particles.
