Speckle noise in satellite based lidar systems

The lidar system model was described, and the statistics of the signal and noise at the receiver output were derived. Scattering media effects were discussed along with polarization and atmospheric turbulence. The major equations were summarized and evaluated for some typical parameters.

DIAL with heterodyne detection including speckle noise: Aircraft/shuttle measurements of O3, H2O, and NH3 with pulsed tunable CO2lasers

A parametric analysis of DIAL sensitivity with heterodyne detection is presented and comparisons with direct detection are discussed. Examples are given for monitoring vertical distributions of O3, H2O, and NH3 using a ground-, aircraft-, or shuttle-based pulsed tunable CO2 laser DIAL system. Results indicate that maximum sensitivity at minimum laser energy per measurement requires multiple pulse operation with the energy per pulse selected so that the measured photon rate is approximately equal to the detector IF bandwidth. Measurement sensitivities can be maximized and interference effects minimized by fine adjustment of measurement frequencies using the tunability of high pressure lasers. The use of rare isotope lasers minimizes loss due to CO2 atmospheric absorption.

Speckle interferometry of molecular cloud sources at 4.8 microns

The spatial structure at 4.8 microns has been observed in W3-IRS 5, Mon R2-IRS 3, and S 140-IRS 1, the first two of which are clearly double. In addition, for four compact sources, low upper limits can be set to the angular diameters which are near those for blackbodies having the same fluxes and color temperatures observed for those sources. With a factor-of-2 higher-resolution, one may be able to distinguish between thermal emission or reddening as the source of the observed spectral shape.

The development of laser speckle velocimetry for the measurement of vortical flow fields

A new velocity measurement technique is described that provides the simultaneous visualization of a two-dimensional streamline pattern and the quantification of the velocity field. The main advantage of this technique is that the velocity field can be measured with sufficient accuracy and spatial resolution so that the vorticity field can be readily obtained. This technique is ideally suited for the study of unsteady vortical flows, which occur in rotorcraft and in high-angle-of-attack aerodynamics. The technique, some of the important parameters that affect its use, and some recent examples are described.

Summary of laser speckle photogrammetry for HOST

High temperature static strain measurement capability is important for the success of the HOST program. As part of the NASA Lewis effort to develop the technology for improved hot-section durability, the HOST instrumentation program has, as a major goal, the development of methods for measuring strain at high temperature. Development work includes both improvements in resistance strain-gauge technology and, as an alternative approach, the development of optical techniques for high temperature strain measurement.

Combating speckle in SAR images - Vector filtering and sequential classification based on a multiplicative noise model

An adaptive vector linear minimum mean-squared error (LMMSE) filter for multichannel images with multiplicative noise is presented. It is shown theoretically that the mean-squared error in the filter output is reduced by making use of the correlation between image bands. The vector and conventional scalar LMMSE filters are applied to a three-band SIR-B SAR, and their performance is compared. Based on a mutliplicative noise model, the per-pel maximum likelihood classifier was derived. The authors extend this to the design of sequential and robust classifiers. These classifiers are also applied to the three-band SIR-B SAR image.

The development of laser speckle velocimetry for the study of vortical flows

A new experimental technique commonly known as PIDV (particle image displacement velocity) was developed to measure an instantaneous two dimensional velocity fluid in a selected plane of the flow field. This technique was successfully applied to the study of several problems: (1) unsteady flows with large scale vortical structures; (2) the instantaneous two dimensional flow in the transition region of a rectangular air jet; and (3) the instantaneous flow over a circular bump in a transonic flow. In several other experiments PIDV is routinely used as a non-intrusive measurement technique to obtain instantaneous two dimensional velocity fields.

The development of laser speckle velocimetry for the study of vortical flows

A research program was undertaken to develop a new experimental technique commonly known as particle image displacement velocity (PIVD) to measure an instantaneous two dimensional velocity field in a selected plane of flow field. This technique was successfully developed and applied to the study of several aerodynamic problems. A detailed description of the technique and a broad review of all the research activity carried out in this field are reported. A list of technical publications is also provided. The application of PIDV to unsteady flows with large scale structures is demonstrated in a study of the temporal evolution of the flow past an impulsively started circular cylinder. The instantaneous two dimensional flow in the transition region of a rectangular air jet was measured using PIDV and the details are presented. This experiment clearly demonstrates the PIDV capability in the measurement of turbulent flows. Preliminary experiments were also conducted to measure the instantaneous flow over a circular bump in a transonic flow. Several other experiments now routinely use PIDV as a non-intrustive measurement technique to obtain instantaneous two dimensional velocity fields.

Infrared speckle interferometry and spectroscopy of Io

Observations of a series of mutual events of the Galilean satellites occurring in early 1991 are providing high resolution information concerning the volcanic hot spots on Jupiter's moon Io. The brightness of Io is plotted as a function of time as it is occulted by Europa. Voyager derived globes are given and interpreted, giving special attention to observed hot spots.

Comparison of Computational, Model and Experimental, Example Trained Neural Networks for Processing Speckled Fringe Patterns

The responses of artificial neural networks to experimental and model-generated inputs are compared for detection of damage in twisted fan blades using electronic holography. The training-set inputs, for this work, are experimentally generated characteristic patterns of the vibrating blades. The outputs are damage-flag indicators or second derivatives of the sensitivity-vector-projected displacement vectors from a finite element model. Artificial neural networks have been trained in the past with computational-model- generated training sets. This approach avoids the difficult inverse calculations traditionally used to compare interference fringes with the models. But the high modeling standards are hard to achieve, even with fan-blade finite-element models.
