Zeeman effect of As II.

Spectrograms of As electrodeless-discharge tubes operated in a field of 24,025 G have given Zeeman patterns for 232 As II spectral lines from 2361 to 10,556 A and yielded 80 Lande g factors, of which more than half are new. There is agreement between these and the g values calculated by least-squares fitting for single configurations or for multiconfigurations, where configuration interaction is noticeable. All of the measured g values as well as the energy levels are used in the fitting process.

Ultraviolet solar spectrum recorded by echelle spectrograph /1970 to 1800 A/.

Six spectrograms of the solar spectrum were obtained in the region from 1970 to 1800 A at a resolution of approximately 200,000 with a rocket-borne spectrograph using an echelle as the principal dispersing element. Reduction of data obtained has been completed in the region from 1946.5 to 1963.5 A, in which 79 absorption features are measured and 33 identified. Most of the identified stronger lines are due to Fe I. A significant feature of the solar spectrum in this region coincides with the raie ultime of Se I.

A tentative identification of /C-13/H4 and an estimate of C-12/C-13 in the atmosphere of Jupiter.

Laboratory spectra of the 3nu(sub 3) band of (C-13)H4 at 1.1 micron were analyzed along with high-resolution image-tube spectra of Jupiter in the appropriate spectral region. Comparison of several J-multiplets in these spectra resulted in the identification of (C-13)H4 in the atmosphere of Jupiter. A Jovian C-12/C-13 isotopic abundance ratio of 110 (plus or minus 35) has been derived from the equivalent width of the R(2) multiplet measured on the two best spectrograms.

The interstellar line spectra of zeta Ophiuchi and zeta Persei and their relation to the short wavelength microwave background radiation

Thirty-one high dispersion Coude spectrograms of zeta Ophiuchi and seven of zeta Persei were numerically synthesized to produce high resolution, low noise spectra in the interval 3650 A to 4350 that yield data on atomic and molecular absorption in well-defined regions of the interstellar medium. The detection threshold is improved by as much as a factor 5 over single plates. Several interstellar lines were discovered in the zeta Oph - 15km/sec cloud and the zeta Per + 13 km/sec cloud.

Simultaneous electrophotometric and spectral observation of N Del 1967

Eleven spectrograms of low dispersion and more than sixty observations in the UBV system are obtained. The light of the nova is found to be unchanging except for J. D. 2439703. With the increase of (B-V) both (U-B) and spectrophotometric temperature decreases. An attempt was made to connect the light variation with the ones in the continuous spectrum.

Interstellar molecular hydrogen observed in the ultraviolet spectrum of delta Scorpii

The ultraviolet spectrogram of delta Scorpii is analyzed for its interstellar molecular hydrogen signatures. Plots of the measured relative flux as a function of wavelength show the positions of the hydrogen lines in the Lyman and Werner bands. In general, each observed band is composed of transitions arising from the lowest rotational level and the first excited rotational level of the ground state, and of a single transition arising from the J = 1 level of the ground state only. Column densities of H2 molecules as well as cloud temperature are deduced.

On the nature of X Persei - Evidence from the 1957 outburst.

Discussion of the line identifications, radial velocities, and equivalent widths derived from spectrograms obtained with the University of Michigan 37-1/2-in. reflector and two-prism spectrograph between November 1954 and March 1960 by several observers. In mid-1957, there occurred in the spectrum of the O star X Per abrupt changes in the emission-line radial velocities and V/R ratios. The irregular variation of the V/R ratio, also observed in the past, suggests the occasional interruption of a more or less steady infall of material through the rotating emission region by outbursts of material from the star. The space velocity of X Per has been rederived, using a revised radial velocity, and compared to the space velocity of the runaway O star xi Per.

The isotope ratio C-12/C-13 in Comet Tago-Sato-Kosaka 1969g.

A spectrogram of Comet 1969g obtained with the 200-inch (508-cm) Hale telescope shows a well-developed emission feature at the position of the A-X(1-0) band head of C-12C-13 (4745 A). Using new laboratory data, it is possible to remove the effect of blending with NH2 lines at this wavelength. The corrected value of the intensity of the isotopic band head is used to derive the abundance ratio C-12/C-13 = 100 plus or minus 20 for the comet. The implications of this result for models of comet formation and the early solar system are discussed.

The 3 DLE instrument on ATS-5

The performance and operation of the DLE plasma electron counter on board the ATS 5 are described. Two methods of data presentation, microfilm line plots and spectrograms, are discussed along with plasma dynamics, plasma flow velocity, electrostatic charging, and wave-particle interactions.

Study of the relation between Pc 3 micropulsations and magnetosheath fluctuations and for the multisatellite multimeasurement investigation of earths bow shock

Hourly averages of HEOS A interplanetary field and plasma parameters are compared with micropulsation spectrograms taken by auroral zone stations. Visual evaluation of tungsten induction coil records and a statistical summary indicate a class of pulsations sometimes in the Pc 3, sometimes in the Pc 4 range, whose appearance correlates with solar wind field flow alignment. It is concluded that there is a pulsation phenomenon of variable period strongly associated with certain interplanetary field directions.

Spectroscopic observations of HZ Herculis. II

Preliminary results from an extensive series of spectroscopic observations of the HZ Her optical counterpart of the eclipsing, pulsating X-ray binary Her X-1. Spectrograms with a dispersion of 30 A/mm reveal a spectral type as late as F5 near minimum in the light curve with the G-band and metallic lines present. Narrow Fe lines show that HZ Her is not a rapid rotator. Low-dispersion (115 A/mm) spectra, obtained with 10-minute time resolution, reveal rapid (10-min) variations in the 4640 N III emission and in the 4471 He I absorbtion features. The H-beta absorption is variable in equivalent width, and shows evidence of being partially filled with emission.

An unidentified absorption in the spectra of C-S stars

An absorption feature in the low-dispersion red spectrograms of carbon Mira variables and C-S stars shown to exhibit strikingly different behavior in these similarly appearing carbon and carbonlike stars. Evidence is presented that in the carbon Miras the feature may be due to unresolved bandheads of the (0,0) system of calcium iodide. In this group of stars the feature exhibits a temperature sensitivity similar to absorptions due to calcium chloride and to the neutral sodium doublet. No identification is suggested for the feature appearing among the C-S stars, though there is evidence against it being composed partially of a zero-volt line of neutral scandium.

Motion of magnetospheric particle clouds in a time-dependent electric field model

A computer code has been developed to study quantitatively the drift motion of magnetospheric particles in a time-dependent electric field. These calculations were applied to the case of proton and electron injections from the plasma sheet during substorms; the model predictions were checked against observations on board the geosynchronous satellite ATS 5 by DeForest and McIlwain (1971). It was found that it is possible to simulate the observed proton spectrograms with an adequate choice of a time-dependent electric field model. The resulting kinematics is physically quite simple and in its gross features does not depend too strongly on the particular fine structure of the model.

Observations of H alpha in HDE 226868

High-dispersion spectrograms in the red have been obtained for HDE 226868, the optical candidate for Cyg X-1. Emission is present at H alpha which varies systematically with the binary period and apparently originates in the vicinity of the B supergiant. During the period of observation a broad redshifted emission component was present throughout the cycle at a velocity of about + 200 km/sec with respect to the primary, while a similar blueshifted component appeared at -200 km/sec between photometric phases 0.2 and 0.6.

Center-to-limb profiles of the aluminum autoionization lines in the solar spectrum

The 1,929 to 1,941 A region of the solar spectrum was measured, using spectrograms obtained with a rocket-borne high resolution spectrograph. The center-to-limb behavior of the Al I autoionization lines of the 3s2 3p 2p - 3s 3p2 2S doublet, at a spatial resolution of approximately three minutes of arc, is reported. The results provide additional data relating to the photospheric-chromospheric transition region.

Distribution and size of elements of Saturn's rings as inferred from 12-cm radar observations

A 64m radar antenna was used to observe Saturn's rings at 12.6 cm wavelength, with reduced Doppler spread. The results show a positive radar return corresponding to about a 60 percent return from an isotropic scatterer with the projected area of the rings, allowing for the Cassini division. A radar spectrogram of the rings is shown with power density plotted against Doppler frequency shift.
