Video Image Stabilization and Registration

A method of stabilizing and registering a video image in multiple video fields of a video sequence provides accurate determination of the image change in magnification, rotation and translation between video fields, so that the video fields may be accurately corrected for these changes in the image in the video sequence. In a described embodiment, a key area of a key video field is selected which contains an image which it is desired to stabilize in a video sequence. The key area is subdivided into nested pixel blocks and the translation of each of the pixel blocks from the key video field to a new video field is determined as a precursor to determining change in magnification, rotation and translation of the image from the key video field to the new video field.

Concepts for a theoretical and experimental study of lifting rotor random loads and vibrations. Phase 5B: Analysis of gust alleviation methods and rotor dynamic stability

The effects of various gust alleviation methods on the random blade response in flapping were studied analytically, assuming a rigid rotor support. The analytical model assumes rigid flapping blades with elastic root restraints. Linearized equations which are approximately valid at low lift conditions were used. Because of the interblade coupling from the feedback devices, the method of multiblade generalized coordinates was most convenient and was extended to include coning, differential coning, and warping of the rotor. The numerical examples cover the dynamic stability characteristics as affected by feedback gains of three- to six-bladed rotors. The number of blades had large effects on stability limits and modal time functions at these limits. The random flapping response of the blades to atmospheric turbulence was determined at 1.6 rotor advance ratio using feedback gains below the stability limit. The most effective reduction of the flapping response per unit gain was achieved with a rotor coning angle feedback.

Application of stability theory to laminar flow control

The paper summarizes the state-of-the-art for application of stability theory to laminar flow control using suction, wall temperature and/or favorable pressure gradient ('natural laminar flow'). Discussions include current LFC problem areas requiring stability analyses, methods of relating stability theory to transition with results from data and theory comparisons available thus far, and a summary of low disturbance data available for theory calibration on swept wings. Critical issues highlighted are problems peculiar to suction LFC on high performance transonic wings and application of the e-to-the-n-power method to both low and high speed flight data.

A method of automatically stabilizing helicopter sling loads

The effect of geometric and aerodynamic characteristics on the stability of the lateral degrees of freedom of a typical helicopter sling load is examined. The feasibility of stabilizing the suspended load by controllable fins was also studied. Linear control theory was applied to the design of a simple control law that stabilized the load over a wide range of helicopter airspeeds.

Fiber optic transmission line stabilization apparatus and method

A reference signal of RF frequency modulates a 0.85 micrometer wavelength optical transmitter. The output of which passes through a first optical filter and a voltage-controller phase shifter. The output of the phase shifter is provided to the fiber optic transmission line. At the receiving end of the transmission line, the signal is demodulated and used to modulate a 1.06 micrometer optical transmitter. The signal from the transmitter is provided to the fiber optic transmission line and passes through the voltage-controlled phase shifter to a phase error detector. The phase of the modulation of the 1.06 micrometer wavelength signal is compared to the phase of the reference signal by the phase error detector. A phase control signal related to the phase difference is provided to the voltage controlled phase shifter which alters the phase of both optical signals until a predetermined phase relationship between modulation on the 1.06 micrometer signal and the reference signal is obtained.

Transcendental and interpolation methods in simultaneous stabilization and simultaneous partial pole placement problems

The existence of a compensator which simultaneously renders a given r-tuple of multiinput-multioutput p x m linear dynamical systems internally stable is investigated. In particular, a set of simultaneously stabilizable r-tuples of plants is parametrized, and it is shown that, provided r = max(m,p) or less, the above set is semialgebraic and dense in the space Sigma of r-tuples of plants. An extension of the classical pole placement and stabilization problems is considered, and the simultaneous partial pole placement problem is investigated.

Applications of truncated QR methods to sinusoidal frequency estimation

Three truncated QR methods are proposed for sinusoidal frequency estimation: (1) truncated QR without column pivoting (TQR), (2) truncated QR with preordered columns, and (3) truncated QR with column pivoting. It is demonstrated that the benefit of truncated SVD for high frequency resolution is achievable under the truncated QR approach with much lower computational cost. Other attractive features of the proposed methods include the ease of updating, which is difficult for the SVD method, and numerical stability. TQR methods thus offer efficient ways to identify sinusoidals closely clustered in frequencies under stationary and nonstationary conditions.

DC/DC Converter Stability Testing Study

This report presents study results on hybrid DC/DC converter stability testing methods. An input impedance measurement method and a gain/phase margin measurement method were evaluated to be effective to determine front-end oscillation and feedback loop oscillation. In particular, certain channel power levels of converter input noises have been found to have high degree correlation with the gain/phase margins. It becomes a potential new method to evaluate stability levels of all type of DC/DC converters by utilizing the spectral analysis on converter input noises.

Combinatorial Multidomain Mesoporous Chips and a Method for Fractionation, Stabilization, and Storage of Biomolecules

A new fractionation device shows desirable features for exploratory screening and biomarker discovery. The constituent MSCs may be tailored for desired pore sizes and surface properties and for the sequestration and enrichment of extremely low abundant protein and peptides in desired ranges of the mass/charge spectrum. The MSCs are effective in yielding reproducible extracts from complex biological samples as small as 10 microliter in a time as short as 30 minutes. They are inexpensive to manufacture, and allow for scaled up production to attain the simultaneous processing of a large number of samples. The MSCs are multiplexed, label-free diagnostic tools with the potential of biological recognition moiety modification for enhanced specificity. The MSCs may store, protect and stabilize biological fluids, enabling the simplified and cost-effective collection and transportation of clinical samples. The MSC-based device may serve as a diagnostic tool to complement histopathology, imaging, and other conventional clinical techniques. The MSCs mediated identification of disease-specific protein signatures may help in the selection of personalized therapeutic combinations, in the real-time assessment of therapeutic efficacy and toxicity, and in the rational modulation of therapy based on the changes in the protein networks associated with the prognosis and the drug resistance of the disease.

CFD-Based Frequency Domain Method for Dynamic Stability Derivative Estimation with Application to Transonic Truss-Braced Wing

This paper presents a dynamic stability estimation technique obtained from high-fidelity CFD simulations of the Mach 0.8 Transonic Truss-Braced Wing (TTBW). A series of unsteady RANS CFD simulations in FUN3D is performed on the TTBW in pitch and plunge oscillations at various reduced frequencies. The time-domain data are transformed into the frequency-domain data by Fourier series. Transfer functions of the dynamic stability derivatives are then estimated by a frequency-domain regression. The dynamic stability derivatives with respect to the angle of attack are determined by the regression of the unsteady aerodynamic coefficients for the plunge motion. The dynamic stability derivatives with respect to the pitch rate are deter-mined by the regression of the differential unsteady aerodynamic coefficients for the pitch motion upon the removal of the angle of attack contribution by the plunge motion. The steady-state stability derivatives are then compared to the results obtained from a stability analysis code VSPAERO as well as steady-state FUN3D simulations. The comparison of the steady-state stability derivatives shows excellent agreement.

A proposed far-field method for frequency-stability measurements on the DSS 13 beam-waveguide antenna

A method for measuring the frequency stability of the beam-waveguide (BWG) antenna at Deep Space Station 13 is presented. This method is relatively inexpensive and primarily utilizes equipment that is already available. Another desirable feature of the method is that a far-field signal will be used for the measurement. In concert with the goal of employing new technology developments, a fiber optic system will be used at 12 GHz to carry a reference antenna signal to the BWG antenna Ku-band test-package location in the pedestal room.
