Integrated thin film cadmium sulfide solar cell module

The design, development, fabrication and tests of flexible integrated thin-film cadmium sulfide solar cells and modules are discussed. The development of low cost and high production rate methods for interconnecting cells into large solar arrays is described. Chromium thin films were applied extensively in the deposited cell structures as a means to: (1) achieve high adherence between the cadmium sulfide films and the vacuum-metallized copper substrates, (2) obtain an ohmic contact to the cadmium sulfide films, and (3) improve the adherence of gold films as grids or contact areas.

Effect of load voltage on thin film cuprous sulfide: Cadmium sulfide solar cells thermally cycled in a simulated space environment

Thin-film Cu2S-CdS solar cells, loaded at various fixed values of load resistance, were thermally cycled for 1429 cycles in a simulated space environment. Cell performance was measured under controlled conditions in air before and after thermal cycling. These data were used to determine the effect of load voltage on cell performance. The performance of the cells was relatively independent of load voltage up to about 0.39 volt. This appears to be a threshold voltage, beyond which there was a significant loss in cell performance. Fortunately, this threshold voltage appears to be sufficiently higher than the maximum power voltage of 0.33 volt so that it can be avoided in most applications.

Analysis of radiation and meteoroid satellite data

The data obtained in earth orbit by the Radiation and Meteoroid Satellite (RMS) were interpreted and reduced to a form which will be usable by future space experimenters. The required tasks are detailed. Computer programs were written which lifted the raw data and associated emphemeris data from the GFE magnetic tapes. The engineering data was then used to evaluate the performance of the spacecraft and the experiments. The radiation data was used to prepare flux, spectral, and dose maps of the South Atlantic magnetic anomaly where possible. The meteoroid data was used to determine a rough estimate of the meteoroid flux and in general evaluate the performance of the thin-film meteoroid sensors. The degree of success of the RMS mission was evaluated in light of the separation anomaly which occurred between RMS and OFO during launch.

Film stability in a vertical rotating tube with a core-gas flow.

The linear hydrodynamic stability of a thin-liquid layer flowing along the inside wall of a vertical tube rotating about its axis in the presence of a core-gas flow is examined. The stability problem is formulated under the conditions that the liquid film is thin, the density and viscosity ratios of gas to liquid are small and the relative (axial) pressure gradient in the gas is of the same order as gravity. The resulting eigenvalue problem is first solved by a perturbation method appropriate to axisymmetric long-wave disturbances. The damped nature (to within the thin-film and other approximations made) of the nonaxisymmetric and short-wave disturbances is noted. In view of the limitations on a truncated perturbation solution when the disturbance wavenumber is not small, an initial value method using digital computer is presented. Stability characteristics of neutral, growing, and damped modes are presented showing the influences of rotation, surface tension, and the core-gas flow. Energy balance in a neutral mode is also illustrated.

A generalized method of active RC network synthesis.

A completely general active RC network synthesis technique using a grounded gyrator and a summing amplifier is described. The technique overcomes serious limitations of previous RC-gyrator realizations and offers advantages o ver other general active RC synthesis methods. The technique is well suited for construction using thin-film RC networks and integrated circuit operational amplifiers, and provides a configuration which is quite insensitive to element variations.

Infrared radiation of thin plastic films.

A combined analytical and experimental study is presented for infrared radiation characteristics of thin plastic films with and without a metal substrate. On the basis of the thin-film analysis, a simple analytical technique is developed for determining band-averaged optical constants of thin plastic films from spectral normal transmittance data for two different film thicknesses. Specifically, the band-averaged optical constants of polyethylene terephthalate and polyimide were obtained from transmittance measurements of films with thicknesses in the range of 0.25 to 3 mil. The spectral normal reflectance and total normal emittance of the film side of singly aluminized films are calculated by use of optical constants; the results compare favorably with measured values.

Effect of simulated space radiation on selected optical materials.

The effect of simulated Nimbus spacecraft orbital (1100 km, circular, and polar) radiation on wide-band-pass glass filters, narrow-bandpass thin-film interference filters, and several fused silicas was determined by transmittance measurements over the 200-3400-nm wavelength region. No changes were observed in the filters, which were shielded with fused silica during irradiation, after exposure to a 1-yr equivalent orbital dose of electrons, nor were changes observed in the fused silicas after the same electron exposure plus a 1-yr equivalent dose of protons. Exposure to a 1/2-yr equivalent dose of solar uv radiation, however, caused a significant degradation in the transmittance of two uv-transmitting interference filters but had no effect on two colored glass filters that transmitted in the visible and near-ir regions. As a result of the uv exposure, the fused silicas exhibited losses of several percent over the 200-300-nm wavelength region.

Hypersonic transitional boundary layers.

Surface thin-film gages have been used to determine the extent of the transition region, intermittency distribution, and disturbance convection velocities in the boundary layer on a sharp 5-deg half angle cone at Mach 7.4 in the Ames 3.5-ft Hypersonic Wind Tunnel. In addition, extensive hot wire space-time correlation measurements have been obtained in the wind-tunnel freestream and in the transitional hypersonic boundary layer on a cone-ogive-cylinder in the same facility. Disturbance convection velocities have been obtained from the longitudinal cross correlation measurements as a function of fluctuation scale and distance from the wall. The results of normal cross correlation measurements are also discussed.

Lower critical field measurements in NbN bulk and thin films.

Low-field magnetization measurements were made at 4.2 K on thin-film and bulk NbN samples by using a vibrating-sample Foner magnetometer with a 50-kG superconducting solenoid. Values of the lower and upper critical fields are calculated, using magnetization curves as the basis. The significance of the Pauli spin paramagnetism and spin-orbit scattering in these materials is discussed.

Preparation of thin film silver fluoride electrodes from constituent elements

The feasibility of preparing thin-film metal fluoride electrodes from the elemental constituents has been demonstrated. Silver fluoride cathodes were prepared by deposition of silver on a conducting graphite substrate followed by fluorination under controlled conditions using elemental fluorine. The resulting electrodes were of high purity, and the variables such as size, shape, and thickness were easily controlled.
