TopoSZ: Preserving Topology in Error-Bounded Lossy Compression

Existing error-bounded lossy compression techniques control the pointwise error during compression to guarantee the integrity of the decompressed data. However, they typically do not explicitly preserve the topological features in data. When performing post hoc analysis with decompressed data using topological methods, preserving topology in the compression process to obtain topologically consistent and correct scientific insights is desirable. In this paper, we introduce TopoSZ, an error-bounded lossy compression method that preserves the topological features in 2D and 3D scalar fields. Specifically, we aim to preserve the types and locations of local extrema as well as the level set relations among critical points captured by contour trees in the decompressed data. The main idea is to derive topological constraints from contour-tree-induced segmentation from the data domain, and incorporate such constraints with a customized error-controlled quantization strategy from the SZ compressor (version 1.4). In conclusion, our method allows users to control the pointwise error and the loss of topological features during the compression process with a global error bound and a persistence threshold.

Dude Where's My Stars: A Novel Topologically Justified Approach to Star Tracking

In this paper, we consider two novel approaches to celestial navigation for spacecraft. Determining attitude without any prior knowledge using star tracking is known to be a difficult task, particularly given the computational complexity and the many potential sources of misinformation. We consider localization by optimizing matching parameters without explicit star identification in a computationally tractable manner. This is achieved using the mathematical tools of topological data analysis (TDA) and cellular sheaves to study the geometry and distribution of cataloged stars. A framework is gained that enhances the statistical approach to noise handling and false star detection, and heterogeneous sensor fusion. Finally, we discuss confidence bounds and minimum information requirements for successful operation.

Curvature Energetics Determined by Alchemical Simulation on Four Topologically Distinct Lipid Phases

The relative curvature energetics of two lipids are tested using thermodynamic integration (TI) on four topologically distinct lipid phases. Simulations use TI to switch between choline headgroup lipids (POPC; that prefers to be flat) and ethanolamine headgroup lipids (POPE; that prefer, for example, the inner monolayer of vesicles). Here, the thermodynamical moving of the lipids between planar, inverse hexagonal (H II ), cubic (Q II ; Pn3m space group), and vesicle topologies reveals differences in material parameters that were previously challenging to access. The methodology allows for predictions of two important lipid material properties: the difference in POPC/POPE monolayer intrinsic curvature (ΔJ 0 ) and the difference in POPC/POPE monolayer Gaussian curvature modulus (Δ$\bar{κ_m}$), both of which are connected to the energetics of topological variation. Analysis of the TI data indicates that, consistent with previous experiment and simulation, the J 0 of POPE is more negative than POPC (ΔJ 0 = –0.018 ± 0.001 Å –1 ). The theoretical framework extracts significant differences in $\bar{κ_m}$ of which POPE is less negative than POPC by 2.0 to 4.0 kcal/mol. The range of these values is determined by considering subsets of the simulations, and disagreement between these subsets suggests separate mechanical parameters at very high curvature. Finally, the fit of the TI data to the model indicates that the position of the pivotal plane of curvature is not constant across topologies at high curvature. Overall, the results offer insights into lipid material properties, the limits of a single HC model, and how to test them using simulation.

Efficient Topology Assessment for Integrated Transmission and Distribution Network with 10,000+ Inverter-based Resources

The renewable energy proliferation calls upon the grid operators and planners to systematically evaluate the potential impacts of distributed energy resources (DERs). Considering the significant differences between various inverter-based resources (IBRs), especially the different capabilities between grid-forming inverters and grid-following inverters, it is crucial to develop an efficient and effective assessment procedure besides available co-simulation framework with high computation burdens. This paper presents a streamlined graph-based topology assessment for the integrated power system transmission and distribution networks. Graph analyses were performed based on the integrated graph of modified miniWECC grid model and IEEE 8500-node test feeder model, high performance computing platform with 40 nodes and total 2400 CPUs has been utilized to process this integrated graph, which has 100,000+ nodes and 10,000+ IBRs. The node ranking results not only verified the applicability of the proposed method, but also revealed the potential of distributed grid forming (GFM) and grid following (GFL) inverters interacting with the centralized power plants.

Topological Optimization with Big Steps

Using persistent homology to guide optimization has emerged as a novel application of topological data analysis. Existing methods treat persistence calculation as a black box and backpropagate gradients only onto the simplices involved in particular pairs. We show how the cycles and chains used in the persistence calculation can be used to prescribe gradients to larger subsets of the domain. In particular, we show that in a special case, which serves as a building block for general losses, the problem can be solved exactly in linear time. This relies on another contribution of this paper, which eliminates the need to examine a factorial number of permutations of simplices with the same value. Here, we present empirical experiments that show the practical benefits of our algorithm: the number of steps required for the optimization is reduced by an order of magnitude.

Influence of topology optimization parameters on the mechanical response of an additively manufactured test structure

Topology Optimization (TO) determines a material distribution within a domain under given conditions and design constraints, and generally generates complex geometries as a result. Complementary to TO, Additive Manufacturing (AM) offers the ability to fabricate complex geometries which may be difficult to manufacture using traditional techniques such as milling. AM has been used in multiple industries including the medical devices area. Hence, TO may be used to create patient-matched devices where the mechanical response is catered to a particular patient. Furthermore, during a medical device regulatory 510(k) pathway, demonstrating that worst-cases are known and tested is critical to the review process. Using TO and AM to predict worst-case designs for subsequent performance testing may be challenging and does not appear to have been thoroughly explored. Investigating the effects of TO input parameters when AM is employed may be the first step in determining the feasibility of predicting these worst-cases.

Evaluation of low-exergy heating and cooling systems and topology optimization for deep energy savings at the urban district level

District energy systems have the potential to achieve deep energy savings by leveraging the density and diversity of loads in urban districts. However, planning and adoption of district thermal energy systems is hindered by the analytical burden and high infrastructure costs. It is hypothesized that network topology optimization would enable wider adoption of advanced (ambient temperature) district thermal energy systems, resulting in energy savings. In this study, energy modeling is used to compare the energy performance of “conventional” and “advanced” district thermal energy systems at the urban district level, and a partial exhaustive search is used to evaluate a heuristic for the topology optimization problem. For the prototypical district considered, advanced district thermal energy systems mated with low-exergy building heating and cooling systems achieved a source energy use intensity that was 49% lower than that of conventional systems. The minimal spanning tree heuristic was demonstrated to be effective for the network topology optimization problem in the context of a prototypical district, and contributes to mitigating the problem’s computational complexity. The work presented in this paper demonstrates the potential of advanced district thermal energy systems to achieve deep energy savings, and advances to addressing barriers to their adoption through topology optimization.

Quantum chemical topology and natural bond orbital analysis of M–O covalency in M(OC 6 H 5 ) 4 (M = Ti, Zr, Hf, Ce, Th, Pa, U, Np)

Covalency is complex yet central to our understanding of chemical bonding, particularly in the actinide series. In this work, we assess covalency in a series of isostructural d and f transition element compounds M(OC 6 H 5 ) 4 (M = Ti, Zr, Hf, Ce, Th, Pa, U, Np) using scalar relativistic hybrid density functional theory in conjunction with the Natural Bond Orbital (NBO), quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) and interacting quantum atoms (IQA) approaches. The IQA exchange–correlation covalency metric is evaluated for the first time for actinides other than uranium, in order to assess its applicability in the 5f series. It is found to have excellent correlation with NBO and QTAIM covalency metrics, making it a promising addition to the computational toolkit for analysing metal–ligand bonding. Our range of metrics agree that the actinide-oxygen bonds are the most covalent of the elements studied, with those of the heavier group 4 elements the least. Within the early actinide series, Th stands apart from the other three elements considered, being consistently the least covalent.

A Unified Scaling Framework for Comparative Analysis of Major Electrical Machine Topologies

This paper presents a unified framework for comparing major electrical machine topologies under identical output and thermal constraints, with emphasis on supply-chain-aware selection among rare-earth-intensive, reduced-rare-earth, and rare-earth-free solutions. Using power factor and air-gap flux density as the principal descriptors, the framework links topology choice to relative size, copper demand, magnet dependence, cost sensitivity, and inertia. To support robust early-stage screening, the deterministic scaling model is combined with uncertainty representation, Monte Carlo scenario propagation, and hesitationaware ranking. The results show that rare-earth-rich machines remain compact and dense, whereas reduced-rare-earth and rare-earth-free alternatives become more attractive under specific material-risk and cost scenarios.

Robotics System Process and Concept for On-orbit Assembly for Potential Mars Sample Return

Proposed Mars Sample Return (MSR) missions would require on-orbit assembly of containment vessels to meet backward Planetary Protection requirements and transfer of the sample container through various stations and positions. Some operations would have to be performed autonomously, and others would require ground-in-loop decision-making stages and verification processes. One concept design for an Earth Return Orbiter (ERO) Capture, Contain, and Return System (CCRS) Transfer Mechanism (TM) is a multi-Degree of Freedom (DOF) manipulator that utilizes a passive End Effector (EE) to assist in containment vessel assembly. To converge on a feasible design, a robotic system process has been instantiated. This process is composed of three main phases: robotic problem definition (operating environment, operations/functions, system goals), robotic solution selection (trade studies on the number of degrees of freedom, number of mechanisms, types of mechanisms), robotic solution design, implementation, and verification and validation (kinematic configuration, robotic and kinematic analysis and topology optimization of components). As a final product of this process, a half-scale functional prototype of the TM was developed to demonstrate the end-to-end operation capability.
