The AMPTE CCE Magnetic Field Experiment

The Magnetic Field Experiment on the Active Magnetosheric Particle Tracer Explorer (AMPTE) Charge Composition Explorer (CCE) spacecraft consists of a triaxial fluxgate-magnetometer system containing sensors mounted on a 2.3-m two-link collapsible boom. It is pointed out that this instrument is similar to those flown on Voyager 1 and 2, and those scheduled to flight on the Giotto and Viking spacecraft. A description is provided of the sensor system and the analog electronics, and some preliminary data are presented.

AMPTE/CCE magnetic field studies of the September 4, 1984 storm

The AMPTE/CCE (active magnetospheric particle tracer explorer/charge composition explorer) magnetic-field observations acquired during the September 4, 1984 geomagnetic storm are described. The observations are used to determine magnetospheric regions and boundaries and are also used as the primary index of the development, evolution, and distribution of the ring current. The results of an analysis of the observations are presented. It is shown that a magnetic compression observed inside the magnetosphere by CCE and outside by ISEE-2 is interpreted as a sudden impulse. From an estimation of magnetopause normals at each crossing, it is concluded that the magnetic variations that occur are due to a contraction and expansion of the entire magnetosphere. Local magnetic-field depressions are observed during two inbound dusk passes, confirming that the ring current never developed in the dawn sector.

Propelling AMPTE into orbit

Three types of propulsion - liquid, solid and cold gas - were used to get the three AMPTE (Active Magnetospheric Particle Tracer Explorers) spacecraft into their operational orbits. The booster, a thrust-augmented DELTA, placed the 1028 kg (2267 lb) international payload into a 555 km x 8.78 Re x 28.7 deg transfer orbit. Solids carried aloft by two of the spacecraft were then fired to tilt one orbit and elevate the other. Cold gas provided two of the spacecraft with torquing capabilities for attitude maneuvering. All told, it took 12 solid, 2 liquid and 2 cold gas propulsion units to get the three AMPTE spacecraft off the ground and into their operational orbits. The relationships between all of them and the manner in which they were utilized on August 16, 1984 the day of the launch - are discussed here.

Analysis and interpretation of the shocklike electrostatic noise observed during the AMPTE solar wind lithium releases

During the AMPTE (Active Magnetospheric Particle Tracer Explorers) solar wind lithium release on September 11, and again on September 20, 1984, an intense burst of electrostatic noise was observed near the upstream edge of the ion cloud. Comparisons with measurements by the IMP-6 and ISEE-1 spacecraft show that the spectrum and overall features of this noise are very similar to electrostatic noise observed at the Earth's bow shock. A stability analysis using realistic parameters shows that the electrostatic noise can be accounted for by an ion beam-plasma instability caused by the solar wind proton beam streaming through the nearly stationary lithium cloud. The growth rate of this instability is largest when the ion density and solar wind proton density are similar, which explains why the noise only occurs near the outer edge of the ion cloud. The similarity to the noise in the Earth's bow shock suggest that a shock may exist in the solar wind plasma flow upstream of the ion cloud. If the noise is associated with a shock, then it must be an electrostatic shock, since the ion cyclotron radii are too small for the existence of a MHD shock. Since the electrostatic instability occurs at phase velocities near the lithium thermal velocity, the electrostatic turbulence may play a role in heating the lithium ions and transferring momentum from the solar wind to the ion cloud.

Early time interaction of lithium ions with the solar wind in the AMPTE mission

The early time interaction of an artifically injected lithium cloud with the solar wind is simulated with a one-dimensional hybrid code. Simulation results indicate that the lithium cloud presents an obstacle to the solar wind flow, forming a shock-like interaction region. Several notable features are found: (1) The magnetic field is enhanced up to a factor of about 6, followed by a magnetic cavity downstream. (2) Solar wind ions are slowed down inside the lithium cloud, with substantial upstream reflection. (3) Most of the lithium ions gradually pick up the velocity of the solar wind and move downstream. (4) Intense and short-wavelength electric fields exist ahead of the interaction region. (5) Strong electron heating occurs within the lithium cloud. (6) The convection electric field in the solar wind is modulated in the interaction region. The simulation results are in remarkable agreement with in situ spacecraft measurements made during lithium releases in the solar wind by the AMPTE (Active Magnetospheric Particle Tracer Explorers) Program.

Designing Delta-DOR acquisition strategies to determine highly elliptical earth orbits

Delta-DOR acquisition strategies are designed for use in determining highly elliptical earth orbits. The requirements for a possible flight demonstration are evaluated for the Charged Composition Explorer spacecraft of the Active Magnetospheric Particle Tracer Explorers. The best-performing strategy uses data spanning the view periods of two orthogonal baselines near the same orbit periapse. The rapidly changing viewing geometry yields both angular position and velocity information, but each observation may require a different reference quasar. The Delta-DOR data noise is highly dependent on acquisition geometry, varying several orders of magnitude across the baseline view periods. Strategies are selected to minimize the measurement noise predicted by a theoretical model. Although the CCE transponder is limited by S-band and a small bandwidth, the addition of Delta-DOR to coherent Doppler and range improves the one-sigma apogee position accuracy by more than an order of magnitude. Additional Delta-DOR accuracy improvements possible using dual-frequency (S/X) calibration, increased spanned bandwidth, and water-vapor radiometry are presented for comparison. With these benefits, the residual Delta-DOR data noise is primarily due to quasar position uncertainties.

Unstable-magnetic-drift waves in a plasma with temperature anisotropy

It is pointed out that under certain conditions, such as a weak electron temperature anisotropy, the magnetic-drift wave instability can become rather important, and the growth rate can be greater than the ion gyrofrequency when the scale length of the density gradient is comparable to, or shorter than, the thermal ion gyroradius. The instability is attributed to wave-electron interactions, and the growth rate is far greater than the case investigated by Krall and Rosenbluth (1963) who attributed the instability to wave-ion interactions. The anticipated vanishing of the instability is observed as epsilon sub n/epsilon sub B approaches zero. The presently observed instability may be used to explain the low-frequency fluctuations evidenced by the Active Particle Tracer Explorer Ion Release Module magnetometer measurements, and may contribute to the acceleration of ions along the plasma cometary tail.

Waves and electric fields associated with the first AMPTE artificial comet

The solar-wind Ba release experiment with the Active Magnetospheric Particle Tracer Explorers is discussed. The explosion of the two Ba-containing canisters produced a rapidly expanding cloud of neutral Ba, which was rapidly ionized by the UV radiation from the sun. A static electric field of about 1-2 mV/m was detected inside the diamagnetic cavity created by the ion cloud. This field is in the same direction as the solar-wind electric field, suggesting that this field may be able to penetrate into the cloud. Electrostatic emissions were observed inside the diamagnetic cavity at the Ba ion plasma frequency.

Transverse deflection and dissipation of small plasma beams and clouds in magnetized media

Propagation of a quasi-neutral plasma beam or cloud across a magnetic field is considered for the case where the transverse dimension of the beam or cloud is sufficiently small compared to ion gyroradii. This situation commonly arises for active experiments in near-earth space. Two mechanisms are presented for transverse deflection of a beam or cloud in the -v0 x B0 direction where v0 is the velocity relative to the ambient medium. In the first, asymmetric escape of ions from an electrically polarized beam or cloud causes transverse deflection by means of a rocket effect. The transverse deflection distance is estimated to be a few times the initial transverse dimension of the beam or cloud. Dissipation occurs within a few times the thermal ion transverse crossing time. In the second mechanism, asymmetric charging results from localized accumulation of incident ions from the ambient medium. This excess positive charge distorts electric equipotentials and drives electron Hall currents that maintain an asymmetric compressed magnetic field region. The asymmetry of the magnetic stress contributes to transverse deflection with the same sign as the rocket effect. The asymmetric magnetic field also focuses incident ions to yield the localized charge accumulation. These ideas are qualitatively consistent with observations of the Active Magnetospheric Particle Tracer Explorers artificial comet releases.

An analysis of the shocklike electrostatic noise observed during AMPTE solar wind ion releases

Electrostatic waves produced by the interaction of the ion cloud with the solar wind are analyzed in order to explain the shocklike noise detected by the Ion Release Module instruments during the Active Magnetospheric Particle Tracer Explorers solar wind ion releases. The results indicate that the shocklike noise can be generated by two instabilities, an ion-electron instability that occurs for waves propagating parallel to the solar wind velocity and an ion-ion instability that occurs for waves propagating at a large angle to the solar wind direction. Both instabilities give high growth rates for both the lithium and barium releases. The calculated results agree with the observed ones in all main features. In the earlier stage of the ion cloud expansion, both instabilities are likely to occur, while in the later stage the ion-ion instability is more likely to occur.

A model for the harmonic of compressional Pc 5 waves

Compressional Pc 5 magnetic waves in the magnetosphere are a unique phenomenon showing a nonsinusoidal waveform in spite of a well-defined period. Although the waveform can be Fourier-decomposed into the fundamental and the second harmonics, the phase between the two is kept constant from event to event, implying that the waveform is not the result of a chance superposition of two magnetospheric eigenmodes. A phenomenological explanation to this waveform is offered using a field-line configuration model that is a modified version of a previously proposed antisymmetric standing wave. In this model, the location of the equatorial node of field-line displacement is assumed to oscillate with the wave, with a peak-to-peak amplitude greater than 10 percent of the wavelength of the standing wave. The predicted waveform at various magnetic latitudes is found to be in excellent agreement with an observation taken near the magnetic equator by the Active Magnetospheric Particle Tracer Explorers/Charge Composition Explorer spacecraft.

Observations and theory of the AMPTE magnetotail barium releases

The barium releases in the magnetotail during the Active Magnetospheric Particle Tracer Explorers (AMPTE) operation were monitored by ground-based imagers and by instruments on the Ion Release Module. After each release, the data show the formation of a structured diamagnetic cavity. The cavity grows until the dynamic pressure of the expanding ions balances the magnetic pressure on its surface. The magnetic field inside the cavity is zero. The barium ions collect on the surface of the cavity, producing a shell. Plasma irregularities form along magnetic field lines draped over the surface of the cavity. The scale size of the irregularities is nearly equal to the thickness of the shell. The evolution and structuring of the diamagnetic cavity are modeled using magnetohydrodynamics theory.

Observation of nonlinear wave decay processes in the solar wind by the AMPTE IRM plasma wave experiment

Nonlinear wave decay processes have been detected in the solar wind by the plasma wave experiment aboard the Active Magnetospheric Particle Tracer Explorers (AMPTE) IRM spacecraft. The main process is the generation of ultralow-frequency ion acoustic waves from the decay of Langmuir waves near the electron plasma frequency. Frequently, this is accompanied by an enhancement of emissions near twice the plasma frequency. This enhancement is most likely due to the generation of electromagnetic waves from the coalescence of two Langmuir waves. These processes occur within the electron foreshock in front of the earth's bow shock.

Simultaneous observation of Pc 3-4 pulsations in the solar wind and in the earth's magnetosphere

The equatorially orbiting Active Magnetospheric Particle Tracer Explorers CCE and IRM satellites have made numerous observations of Pc 3-4 magnetic field pulsations (10-s to 100-s period) simultaneously at locations upstream of the earth's bow shock and inside the magnetosphere. These observations show solar wind/IMF control of two categories of dayside magnetospheric pulsations. Harmonically structured, azimuthally polarized pulsations are commonly observed from L = 4 to 9 in association with upstream waves. More monochromatic compressional pulsations are clearly evident on occasion, with periods identical to those observed simultaneously in the solar wind. The observations reported here are consistent with a high-latitude (cusp) entry mechanism for wave energy related to harmonically structured pulsations.

Holocinematographic Velocimeter

Holographic movies used to study turbulent flows. High-speed movie composed of single-exposure holograms of tracer particles in each of two simultaneous orthogonal views of flow. Time resolution set by movie frame rate, and total time limited by length of movie. Data from system used to verify results of theoretical models and numerical simulations of turbulence, visualize and measure coherent structures in "non-simple" turbulent flows, to examine mechanisms operative in various turbulence-control/drag-reduction concepts.

Energetic magnetospheric ions at the dayside magnetopause - Leakage or merging?

The leakage model for the escape of energetic magnetospheric particles into the magnetosheath is described, making comparisons with the merging model where possible. Reported observations of energetic particles at the dayside magnetopause are reexamined, and it is concluded that they do not conclusively support the merging model, either on a case-by-case basis or statistically. New observations made by the Charge Composition Explorer satellite during the Active Magnetospheric Particle Tracer Explorers program are presented. They indicate that magnetospheric ions of all species steadily escape into the magnetosheath and stream away from the magnetopause, regardless of the magnetosheath magnetic field orientation. It is concluded that the leakage model explains both the new and old observations at least as well as, or better than, the merging model.

Holocinematographic velocimeter for measuring time-dependent, three-dimensional flows

Two simulatneous, orthogonal-axis holographic movies are made of tracer particles in a low-speed water tunnel to determine the time-dependent, three-dimensional velocity field. This instrument is called a Holocinematographic Velocimeter (HCV). The holographic movies are reduced to the velocity field with an automatic data reduction system. This permits the reduction of large numbers of holograms (time steps) in a reasonable amount of time. The current version of the HCV, built for proof-of-concept tests, uses low-frame rate holographic cameras and a prototype of a new type of water tunnel. This water tunnel is a unique low-disturbance facility which has minimal wall effects on the flow. This paper presents the first flow field examined by the HCV, the two-dimensional von Karman vortex street downstream of an unswept circular cylinder. Key factors in the HCV are flow speed, spatial and temporal resolution required, measurement volume, film transport speed, and laser pulse length. The interactions between these factors are discussed.

Nature and the nonlinear evolution of electrostatic waves associated with the AMPTE solar wind releases

The nonlinear evolution of the electrostatic waves observed during the AMPTE (Active Magnetosphere Particle Tracer Explorers) solar wind releases is investigated. Previous linear studies indicate two distinct sets of instabilities may be responsible for the generation. One set consists of ion-acoustic type instabilities which are insensitive to the presence of a background magnetic field, while the other group corresponds to the modified two stream instabilities and requires the solar wind flow to be across the ambient magnetic field. To establish which set of instabilities is more viable a detailed linear Vlasov theory has been conducted by numerically solving the full electromagnetic dispersion relation. In addition both the plasma wave as well as the magnetic field measurements by the IRM (Ion Release Module) spacecraft were used to correlate the frequency and the power of the observed waves with the magnitude and the direction of the solar wind magnetic field. The results of these analyses indicate that the ion-acoustic type instabilities have growth rates that are an order of magnitude or more larger than those of the modified two stream instabilities. Results show that both the solar wind protons and the released ions may be heated and accelerated in the directions oblique to the solar wind flow velocity.
