Calculation of infrared spectral transmittances of inhomogeneous gases

Calculation of spectral transmittance for a particular inhomogeneous gas path is made by combining known data on gases at constant temperature, pressure, and concentration. The spectral transmittances of the inhomogeneous plume gases is needed to calculate the heat radiated from the exhaust plume to the rocket base of a multiple engine rocket.

Studies relating to FM television and telemetry transmitters

The Auburn University Model S-2 FM television transmitter was examined to determine if the performance and reliability could be improved by application of new techniques and devices developed since completion of the original design work. In particular this study examined the possibility of increased use of integrated circuits. It was determined that improvements in both performance and reliability were possible. In addition a study was conducted to determine the feasibility of converting the transmitter to handle telemetry signals. The study revealed that this conversion was feasible and the modifications were made to the prototype model for verification.

Two carrier communication system with single transmitter

A pulse code modulated communication system is disclosed for transmitting two subcarrier modulated carriers from a single transmitter comprising two channels for phase modulating the two carriers independently. The modulating subcarriers are independently modulated by data and/or pseudonoise (PN) codes as desired. The modulated carriers are switched alternately to the single transmitter in synchronism with operation of a PN code generator when PN code modulation is present, as for ranging.

Transmitter efficiency considerations in MAPSK signal selection

A simple model of the efficiency-power relationship for a microwave transmitter permits comparison of M-ary amplitude and phase shift keyed (MAPSK) signal array performance on the basis of average DC power in, rather than average RF signal power out. This is of interest in comparing MAPSK arrays with comparable polyphase, since the polyphase transmitter is operated at a single power level, while MAPSK varies over a range of power levels, each of differing efficiency. A constant efficiency-power curve permits comparison of signal arrays in terms of array average power, while a linear curve requires comparison on the basis of array peak power. Since typical efficiency curves will lie between these extremes, the array peak and average power levels provide bounds on array requirements for average DC input power. Examination of the performance of several MAPSK sets reveals a distinct power advantage of quadrature amplitude shift keying (QASK) over most viable signal sets.

Evaluation of transmittance of selected infrared bands

Computer programs were developed for evaluating homogeneous path transmittance with line-by-line and quasi-random band model formulations. Spectral transmittances for some selected bands of different gases (CO, N2O, CO2, H2O) were obtained using these programs. Results of theoretical computations are compared with available experimental measurements. Significant errors are observed in the results obtained from a quasi-random band model formulation, indicating that it is inadequate to meet the accuracy requirements for atmospheric work.

Development of a monolithic GaAs integrated optical transmitter

The paper discusses a program designed for the development of a GaAs IOC transmitter consisting of a monolithic surface laser whose output is coupled into patterned channel waveguides. Modulation and switching of the radiation occur in the waveguide circuit and are controlled separately. These structures are to be fabricated monolithically on a single semiconductor chip with each device amenable to integrated low-cost manufacture. The waveguide outputs of the IOC transmitter will be coupled to single mode optical fibers which form a transmission cable. The properties of the semiconductors (Ga,Al)As and (Ga,In)As permit performance of each of the basic functions included in the device considered. The concept of monolithic nondiscrete GaAs diode lasers is examined along with optical stripline channel waveguides and electro-optic channel waveguide modulators and switches.

Intermodulation components in the transmitter RF output due to high voltage power supply ripple

The economic feasibility of eliminating the 400-Hz motor-generator sets used to provide power to the high-voltage power supplies of the 20-kW transmitters and replace them with a 60-Hz high-voltage power supply was investigated. The efficiency of a power supply that runs from the 60-Hz line directly would pay for itself in about seven years and could be designed so that the transmitter would meet all the incidental phase and amplitude modulation specifications.

Solid state Ku-band spacecraft transmitters

A transmitter is considered that consists of GaAs IMPATT and Read diodes operating in a microstrip circuit environment to provide amplification with a minimum of 63 db small signal gain and a minimum compressed gain at 5 W output of 57 db. Reported are Schottky-Read diode design and fabrication, microstrip and circulator optimization, preamplifier development, power amplifier development, dc-to-dc converter design, and integration of the breadboard transmitter modules. A four-stage power amplifier in cascade with a three-stage preamplifier had an overall gain of 56.5 db at 13.5 GHz with a power output of 4.5 W. A single-stage Read amplifier delivered 5.9 W with 4 db gain at 22% efficiency.

Synthetic atmospheric transmittance spectra near 15 and 4.3 microns

Synthetic monochromatic atmospheric transmittance spectra are presented for infrared intervals in the vicinity of the 15 and 4.3 microns CO2 bands. The intervals are nominally 20 kaysers in width, and the spectra partition the intervals 560, 780 kayser and 2180, 2400 kayser, respectively. The spectra are for a vertical atmospheric path. A given spectrum is presented at that pressure for which the mean weighting function is a maximum. In order to indicate the molecular origin of the features in a given spectrum, separate spectra are also presented for those species which make center line contributions to the absorption over the interval. The transmittance model for the calculations is described. In addition to the representation of spectral features for intervals which comprise these two CO2 bands, the spectra afford a utility in the design of high precision satellite temperature radiometers.

Accuracies of three computationally efficient algorithms for computing atmospheric transmittances

Three algorithms for calculating polychromatic atmospheric transmittance functions have been tested using a set of eleven distinct temperature profiles in order to compare transmittance accuracies achievable by the three methods. The comparison of rms errors demonstrates that the iterative method of McMillin and Fleming (1976) is the most accurate of the efficient algorithms currently available for gases with constant mixing ratios; its accuracy approaches that of the spectroscopic parameters and the computational approximations used in the ground-truth line-by-line calculations. The method of Arking et al. (1974), while less accurate, has the advantage of being perfectly general and easily adapted to cases where spectral bandwidths are varied

Systems analysis of the installation, mounting, and activation of emergency locator transmitters in general aviation aircraft

A development program was developed to design and improve the Emergency Locator Transmitter (ELT) transmitter and to improve the installation in the aircraft and its activation subsystem. There were 1135 general aviation fixed wing aircraft accident files reviewed. A detailed description of the damage to the aircraft was produced. The search aspects of these accidents were studied. As much information as possible about the ELT units in these cases was collected. The data should assist in establishing installation and mounting criteria, better design standards for activation subsystems, and requirements for the new ELT system design in the area of crashworthiness.
