Demonstration of Long Vacuum Integrity Lifetime of Trapped Ion Standard Package

A compact Hg ion trap package that was vacuum-sealed since 9 years has been demonstrated to be successfully operational showing excellent ion-trap lifetime exceeding 400 days. In addition to the vacuum package, the same 9-year old optical and detection packages are utilized to obtain these results. Charge transfer relaxation effects between neutral Hg and trapped Hg ion are studied. This work shows the reliability of such units in view of next-generation ground and space-borne trapped ion clocks.

WFIRST Coronagraph Detector Trap Modeling Results and Improvements

The WFIRST coronagraph is being designed to detect and characterize mature exoplanets through the starlight reflected from their surfaces and atmospheres. The light incident on the detector from these distant exoplanets is estimated to be on the order of a few photons per pixel per hour. To measure such small signals, the project has baselined the CCD201 detector made by e2v, a low-noise and high-efficiency electron-multiplying charge-coupled device (EMCCD), and has instituted a rigorous test and modeling program to characterize the device prior to flight. An important consideration is detector performance degradation over the proposed mission lifetime due to radiation exposure in space. To quantify this estimated loss in performance, the project has built a detector trap model that takes into account detailed trap interactions at the sub-pixel level, including stochastic trap capture and release, and the deferment of charge into subsequent pixels during parallel and serial clocking of the pseudo-two-phase CCD201 device. This paper describes recent detector trap model improvements and modeling results.

Liquid trap seals thermocouple leads

Liquid trap seals thermocouple leads coming out of a brazing retort that operates with a controlled atmosphere so that air cannot enter the retort and hydrogen cannot escape. The trap is fastened to a duct welded to the retort. Thermocouple leads are led out through the duct and trap, with the fluid forming a gastight seal between the atmosphere and the retort.

Sorption vacuum trap

Modified sorption trap for use in high vacuum systems contains provisions for online regeneration of sorbent material. Trap is so constructed that it has a number of encapsulated resistance heaters and a valving and pumping device for removing gases from heated sorbing material. Excessive downtime is eliminated with this trap.

On the origins of trapped helium, neon and argon isotopic variations in meteorites. I - Gas-rich meteorites, lunar soil and breccia. II - Carbonaceous meteorites.

Data are presented from stepwise heating experiments and total extractions on five meteorites: Kapoeta, Fayetteville, Holman Island, Cee Vee, and Pultusk. These data reveal the presence of four isotopically distinct trapped neon components. A comparison of trapped neon with trapped helium and argon in bulk analyses indicates the existence of correlated helium, neon and argon isotopic structures. Component B is attributed primarily to direct implantation of rare gas ions by the present day solar wind. Component C is identified with directly implanted low energy (1-10 Mev/n) solar flare rare gases. Component D is associated with rare gas ions implanted in meteoritic material by the primitive, pre-main sequence, solar wind. A fourth component, observed only in Kapoeta and the lunar fines and breccia, is tentatively attributed to parent body 'atmospheric' ions implanted in surface material by a solar wind induced electric field.

Time-of-flight mobility and trapping results for ZnSe.

Results of measurements of time-of-flight mobility and trapping for zinc selenide. The data were obtained at room temperature for electric fields in the range from 30,000 to 800,000 V/cm. A relatively constant hole mobility (about 50 sq cm/V sec) was found for the entire range of investigated fields. The electron mobility was approximately constant (about 400 sq cm/V sec) up to approximately equal to 300,000 V/cm, above which the drift velocity remained constant. No obvious negative differential mobility was observed, even though the Gunn effect has been reported for the field range investigated. Trapping and detrapping times in the vicinity of 1 nsec are reported for both holes and electrons. The field dependence of the electron-trapping times is unusual and remains unexplained.

Relations between ionospheric electric fields and energetic trapped and precipitating electrons.

Balloon-borne electric field and X ray detectors have been flown from Fort Churchill and from near the foot of the magnetic field line on which the ATS 5 satellite is located in order to obtain satellite and balloon measurements of trapped and precipitating particles and to compare them with balloon measurements of the ionospheric electric field. The approximately 80 hours of coordinated data show that nighttime precipitation events (1) are preceded by enhancements of the westward component of ionospheric electric field about 70% of the time, (2) cause the westward electric field strength to decrease about 70% of the time, (3) are unrelated to variations of the southward component of the ionospheric electric field. The westward electric field enhancement before many precipitation events occurs when the trapped electron flux is at or near the stable trapping limit.

Radiative damping of trapped gravity waves in the solar atmosphere.

The radiative damping of trapped gravity waves in an optically thin atmosphere is studied for a stratified Boussinesq fluid. The character of the atmospheric eigenmodes depends on the distribution of the Brunt-Vaisala frequency N and the radiative relaxation time tau. The calculations for simple layer models show that if N x tau is large over some finite fraction of the trapping region, then modes of long lifetime can exist. In order to suppress gravity waves entirely, it is necessary that N x tau be less than or equal to 1 over the entire trapping region. Qualitative application of the results to the solar atmosphere leads to the conclusion that gravity wave eigenmodes of the solar atmosphere, although damped, are by no means eliminated by radiative effects.

Argon in Apollo 15 green glass spherules /15426/ - Ar-40-Ar-39 age and trapped argon

The results of thermal-release argon analyses of neutron-irradiated green glass spherules separated from the lunar sample 15426 are discussed. It is shown that the gas-retention age determined by the Ar-40-Ar-39 method is similar to that of local mare basalts, and differs from the ages of Appenine Front samples recovered from the same region as 15426. Trapped argon is present in near-surface regions of the spherules, and can be resolved into at least two components requiring separate origins: a shallow (0.1 micron) component with Ar-40/Ar-39 not less than 30, and a deeper (2.0 micron) component with an Ar-40/Ar-39 ratio of 2.9. The ratio of trapped Ar-40 to Ar-36 is higher than in any lunar soil samples, and suggests that the trapped gas was implanted early in the spherules history.

The protons and electrons trapped in the Jovian dipole magnetic field region and their interaction with Io

Detailed analysis of electrons equal to or greater than 3 MeV and of protons 0.5 to 1.8 MeV and equal to or greater than 35 MeV for both the inbound and the outbound passes of the Pioneer 10 spacecraft. Conclusive evidence is obtained that the trapped radiation in Jupiter's inner magnetosphere is maintained and supplied by inward diffusion from the outer regions of the trapped radiation zone. It is shown that the time required for isotropization of an anisotropic flux by pitch angle scattering inside L approximately equal to 6 is long in comparison with the time required for particles to diffuse inward from L approximately equal to 6 to L approximately equal to 3, that the high-energy protons were not injected at high energies by the Crand (cosmic ray albedo neutron decay) process but were accelerated in the magnetosphere of Jupiter, and that the main conclusions of this analysis are unaffected by use of either the D sub 1 or the D sub 2 magnetic field models. Theoretical studies of the capture of trapped electrons and protons by Io have been carried out, and it is found that the probability of capture by Io depends strongly upon the particle species and kinetic energy.

Heat trap - An optimized far infrared field optics system

The article deals with the design and performance of a heat trap IR system designed to maximize the concentration and efficient reception of far IR and submillimeter wavelength radiation. The test object is assumed to be extended and/or viewed at wavelengths much longer than the detector, and the entrance aperture is limited to the size of the telescope Airy diffraction disk. The design of lenses, cavity, bolometers, light collectors, and mirrors for the system is discussed. Advantages and feasibility of arrays of heat traps are considered. Beam patterns, flux concentration, and performance variation with wavelength are dealt with. The heat trap is recommended for sensing all types of far IR sources and particularly for extended far IR sources.-

Traps in Al2O3 detected by tunneling

A structure, quite different from inelastic tunneling peaks, has been observed in electron-tunneling spectra of MOM junctions. A capacitance peak is associated with this structure, which is attributed to traps in the oxide at energies smaller than those previously reported. The C-V characteristics calculated using a single-energy trap model agree with experimental results; however, no satisfactory explanation has yet been found to account for the strong temperature dependence of the trap energy levels.

The trapped radiation belts of Jupiter

The preliminary results from the Trapped Radiation Detector instruments of the University of California at San Diego aboard Pioneers 10 and 11 for making measurements in the Jupiter magnetosphere are reviewed. Attention is given to the instrument and the flyby trajectories and results of the following investigations are presented: interplanetary electrons of Jovian origin, the configuration of the magnetosphere, interactions between the trapped radiation belts and Jupiter's satellites, (absorption of trapped radiation, the effect of angular dimensions, and the injection of energetic radiation), the behavior of electrons in the inner Jupiter magnetosphere, and multiple peaks near Pioneer 11 periapsis.

Energy dependence of the trapping of uranium atoms by aluminum oxide surfaces

The energy dependence of the trapping probability for sputtered U-235 atoms striking an oxidized aluminum collector surface at energies between 1 eV and 184 eV was measured. At the lowest energies, approximately 10% of the uranium atoms are not trapped, while above 10 eV essentially all of them stick. Trapping probabilities averaged over the sputtered energy distribution for uranium incident on gold and mica are also presented.

Saturnian trapped radiation and its absorption by satellites and rings - The first results from Pioneer 11

Preliminary results from Pioneer 11 concerning the acceleration and trapping of charged particles in the magnetic field of Saturn are reported. The identification and measurement of the intensities and spectra of charged particle species was performed by an experiment including four charged particle sensor systems, within 20 Saturn radii of the planet. Increases in the intensity of 0.5- to 1.8-MeV protons within 15 Saturn radii indicate the trapping and acceleration of particles in the dipole field region, while a decrease in proton intensity between seven and four Saturn radii is attributed to absorption by Dione and Enceladus and possibly ring material as well. Proton and electron intensity distributions are found to be axially symmetric within four Saturn radii, indicating a centered dipole aligned with the planetary rotation axis. Trapped radiation absorption at the orbit of Mimas is analyzed to obtain an upper limit of 4 x 10 to the -8th Saturn radii-squared/sec to the inward diffusion coefficient; an absorption-like feature observed at L = 2.5 is attributed to a previously unidentified satellite of diameter less than 200 km and semimajor axis 2.51 Saturn radii. Radiation absorption by the newly discovered F ring was also observed, however beneath the A, B and C rings a low flux of high-energy electrons was detected.

Trapped radiation belts of Saturn - First look

Data on the magnetosphere of Saturn obtained with the trapped radiation detector package on board the Pioneer 11 spacecraft is reported. Radiation belt profiles determined by the trapped radiation detectors on Pioneer 10 and 11 indicate that Saturn's magnetosphere is intermediate in size between those of the earth and Jupiter, with particle intensities similar to those of the earth. The outer region of the Saturn magnetosphere is found to contain particles of lower energy than the outer region, being strongly influenced by the time-varying solar wind. The moons and rings of Saturn are observed to be effective absorbers of trapped particles, confirming the discoveries of the F ring, the Pioneer ring division and the moon 1979 S 2. Particle diffusion rates are used to estimate a cross-sectional area of greater than 7 x 10 to the 13th sq cm and an opacity greater than 0.00001 for the F ring. It is suggested that cosmic-ray albedo neutron decay be studied as a possible source of energetic particles in the inner magnetosphere of Saturn.

Permanent magnetic trapping

It is shown that the global nature of trapped particle motion in phase space makes it entirely plausible that particles with pitch angles near 90 deg are trapped for extremely long times, probably indefinitely. The long observed lifetimes of trapped particles can immediately be accounted for by this former population. For particles with low pitch angles an 'overstability' develops which serves to produce rapid variations in pitch angle and, presumably, random walk into the loss cone.

A comparison of characteristic times for satellite absorption of energetic protons trapped in the Jovian and Saturnian magnetic fields

The characteristic times for the absorption of energetic particles trapped in the Jupiter and Saturn magnetospheres by the respective planetary satellites are compared on the basis of Pioneer 10 and 11 data. Characteristic radiation lifetimes with respect to satellite absorption were calculated on the basis of a model of the radial diffusion of particles by the violation of the third adiabatic invariant in the presence of perfectly absorbing satellites, taking into account the tilt and offset of the planetary magnetic dipole moment vectors with respect to the spin axis and the finite gyroradii and bounce periods of the trapped particles. For energetic particles of dipole moments from 1 to 10,000 MeV/G, it is found that the Saturnian times average at least an order of magnitude less than the Jovian times, and the Jovian times increase with increasing trapped particle magnetic mirror latitude. If it is assumed that the rates of radial diffusion are comparable in the two magnetospheres, the results indicate that the Saturnian satellites are more efficient absorbers of inwardly diffusing ions than are the Jovian satellites, due to the near rotational symmetry of the Saturnian magnetic field.
