Formation of the O I resonance triplet and intercombination doublet in the solar chromosphere

Spectrum synthesis calculations are presented for the O I resonance triplet at 1304 A and the intercombination doublet at 1358 A for the solar atmosphere and several variants, allowing for triplet fluorescence by the Ly-beta emission of H I. Profiles, synthesized from a seven-level plus continuum O I atom are compared to observations taken with the high-resolution spectrometer on OSO 8. It is found that the O I triplet emission is dominated by the Ly-beta fluorescence and that the agreement between observations and profiles computed with current chromospheric models is much improved over earlier studies.

Ab Initio Calculations of Singlet and Triplet Excited States of Chlorine Nitrate and Nitric Acid

Ab initio calculations of vertical excitations to singlet and triplet excited states of chlorine nitrate and nitric acid are reported. The nature of the electronic transitions are examined by decomposing the difference density into the sum of detachment and attachment densities. Counterparts for the three lowest singlet excited states of nitric acid survive relatively unperturbed in chlorine nitrate, while other low-lying singlet states of chlorine nitrate appear to be directly dissociative in the ClO chromophore. These results suggest an assignment of the two main peaks in the experimental chlorine nitrate absorption spectrum. In addition, triplet vertical excitations and the lowest optimized triplet geometries of both molecules are studied.

Infrared laser spectroscopy of jet-cooled carbon clusters: structure of triplet C6

We report the first structural characterization of the triplet isomer of C6. Forty-one rovibrational/fine structure transitions in the nu 4(sigma u) antisymmetric stretch fundamental of the C6 cluster have been measured by diode laser absorption spectroscopy of a supersonic carbon cluster beam. The observed spectrum is characteristic of a centrosymmetric linear triplet state with cumulene-type bonding. The measured ground state rotational constant B0 = 0.048 479 (10)cm-1 and the effective bond length r(eff) = 1.2868 (1) angstroms are in good agreement with ab initio predictions for the linear triplet (3 sigma g-) state of C6.

Formation of Triplet Positron-helium Bound State by Stripping of Positronium Atoms in Collision with Ground State Helium

Formation of triplet positron-helium bound state by stripping of positronium atoms in collision with ground state helium JOSEPH DI RlENZI, College of Notre Dame of Maryland, RICHARD J. DRACHMAN, NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center - The system consisting of a positron and a helium atom in the triplet state e(+)He(S-3)(sup e) was conjectured long ago to be stable [1]. Its stability has recently been established rigorously [2], and the values of the energies of dissociation into the ground states of Ps and He(+) have also been reported [3] and [4]. We have evaluated the cross-section for this system formed by radiative attachment of a positron in triplet He state and found it to be small [5]. The mechanism of production suggested here should result in a larger cross-section (of atomic size) which we are determining using the Born approximation with simplified initial and final wave functions.

Triplet Fusion Upconversion for Photocuring 3D-Printed Particle-Reinforced Composite Networks

High energy photons (λ < 400 nm) are frequently used to initiate free radical polymerizations to form polymer networks, but are only effective for transparent objects. This phenomenon poses a major challenge to additive manufacturing of particle-reinforced composite networks since deep light penetration of short-wavelength photons limits the homogeneous modification of physicochemical and mechanical properties. Herein, the unconventional, yet versatile, multiexciton process of triplet–triplet annihilation upconversion (TTA-UC) is employed for curing opaque hydrogel composites created by direct-ink-write (DIW) 3D printing. TTA-UC converts low energy red light (λ max = 660 nm) for deep penetration into higher-energy blue light to initiate free radical polymerizations within opaque objects. Further, as proof-of-principle, hydrogels containing up to 15 wt.% TiO 2 filler particles and doped with TTA-UC chromophores are readily cured with red light, while composites without the chromophores and TiO 2 loadings as little as 1–2 wt.% remain uncured. Importantly, this method has wide potential to modify the chemical and mechanical properties of complex DIW 3D-printed composite polymer networks.

Interlayer Triplet-Sensitized Luminescence in Layered Two-Dimensional Hybrid Metal-Halide Perovskites

In this work, we review an emerging class of 2D layered metal-halide perovskites that exhibit important photophysical behavior involving inorganic exciton-to-molecular triplet energy flow. These novel systems have potential to impact several energy-related fields and processes, including optoelectronics, photon upconversion strategies, and triplet-based photocatalysis. Early studies provided initial guidance and revealed several intriguing questions that more recent developments, in terms of both expanded and diversified compositional tuning and more sophisticated characterization, have begun to answer. These questions center around the delicate interplay between physical and electronic structure that is perturbed by choice of perovskite structural motif and organic spacer properties. In addition to their distinct natures, the energy offsets between the metal-halide and molecular excitons can be leveraged for a variety of unique effects and emergent properties, including fast interlayer energy transfer. We review the key advances with an eye toward strategies for controlling photophysical outcomes based on structure-energy-function relationships.

Plasmons Enable Ultralow Threshold Solid-State Triplet Fusion Upconversion with a 2D Sensitizer

Solid-state triplet−triplet annihilation (TTA) upconversion has significant potential for application in light harvesting, optoelectronic devices, and bioimaging. However, the high optical powers required to achieve efficient upconversion have inhibited its adoption. In this work, we demonstrate plasmon-enhanced near-infrared (NIR)-to-blue TTA upconversion in a monolayer WSe2/organic heterojunction. Under far-field excitation, the device reaches a threshold of 19 mW/cm 2 and an external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 0.17% with an anti-Stokes shift of 1.1 eV. Plasmon excitation lowers the threshold to 0.9 mW/cm 2 and improves the EQE to 3.6%. We attribute the plasmon enhancement to surface plasmon polariton (SPP) near-field enhancement and dark-exciton absorption. Optimization of the WSe 2 transfer process is identified as a key factor for the device performance. This work demonstrates that plasmon excitation overcomes the low far-field absorption of 2D transition-metal dichalcogenide (TMD) sensitizers. Consequently, monolayer TMDs can achieve solid-state upconversion with a performance among the best reported.

Low-Threshold Visible-to-Ultraviolet Solid-State Triplet-Fusion Upconversion

Visible-to-ultraviolet (UV) triplet-triplet annihilation (TTA) upconversion is an energy-relevant photon-management strategy that converts visible photons into UV photons capable of driving high-energy photochemical processes. Practical implementation requires solid-state thin films, which often require high excitation power. Here, we demonstrate the first solid-state visible-to-UV TTA upconversion thin-film device, using 1,4-bis((tricyclopentylsilyl)ethynyl)naphthalene (TCPS-NAP) as the annihilator and tris(2-phenylpyridine)iridium(III) (Ir(ppy) 3 ) as the sensitizer on silver. Under incoherent 455 nm excitation, the device exhibits blue-to-UV upconversion with a threshold of 4.8 mW/cm 2 . Using surface plasmons in the planar silver film, we achieve green-to-UV upconversion with a 1.11 eV anti-Stokes shift and 6.9 mW/cm 2 threshold, a 12.2 × threshold enhancement over far-field 532 nm excitation. In solution, TCPS-NAP shows excimer-dominated anti-Stokes emission rather than UV upconversion. These results establish a platform for harvesting low-intensity visible light to drive UV processes while demonstrating that solution-phase screening does not predict solid-state upconversion performance.

Plasmon-enhanced ultralow-threshold solid-state triplet fusion upconversion

Triplet fusion upconversion has potential applications in solar cells, photoredox catalysis, additive manufacturing and bioimaging. However, solid-state upconversion systems have struggled to measure up to their solution-phase counterparts, often requiring enormous optical power densities to operate at the maximum efficiency. Here we substantially improve the performance of upconversion films through excitation with surface plasmons that propagate along a planar silver-film interface, leading to an absorption enhancement that reduces the intensity threshold I th by a factor of 19 and enhances the external quantum efficiency by a factor of 17. From this, we achieve I th values as low as 3.4 mW cm −2 and an external quantum efficiency up to 0.094%. To demonstrate real-world viability, we couple the upconversion film to plasmons generated by the near-field of excitons in an organic light-emitting diode. As a result, this scheme is then used to fabricate a white-emitting organic light-emitting diode where blue emission sources from plasmon-excited upconversion, achieving a high colour rendering index of 86.2 and setting precedent for blue emission in the absence of high-energy polarons or triplets.

Charge transfer states impact the triplet pair dynamics of singlet fission polymers

Polymers are desirable optoelectronic materials, stemming from their solution processability, tunable electronic properties, and large absorption coefficients. An exciting development is the recent discovery that singlet fission (SF), the conversion of a singlet exciton to a pair of triplet states, can occur along the backbone of an individual conjugated polymer chain. Here, compared to other intramolecular SF compounds, the nature of the triplet pair state in SF polymers remains poorly understood, hampering the development of new materials with optimized excited state dynamics.

On the circularly polarized luminescence of individual triplet sublevels

Here, we discuss the possibility of using circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) as a tool to probe individual triplet spin sublevels that are populated nonadiabatically following photoexcitation. This study is motivated by a mechanism proposed for chirality-induced spin selectivity in which coupled electronic-nuclear dynamics may lead to a non-statistical population of the three triplet sublevels in chiral systems. We find that low-temperature CPL should aid in quantifying the exact spin state/s populated through coupled electronic-nuclear motion in chiral molecules.

Possible coexistence of antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic spin fluctuations in the spin-triplet superconductor UTe 2 revealed by 125 Te NMR under pressure

We report a spin-triplet superconducting state mediated by ferromagnetic (FM) spin fluctuations has been suggested to occur in the newly discovered heavy-fermion superconductor UTe 2 . However, the recent neutron scattering measurements revealed the presence of antiferromagnetic (AFM) spin fluctuations in UTe 2 . Here, we report the 125 Te nuclear magnetic resonance studies of a single-crystal UTe 2 , suggesting the coexistence of FM and AFM spin fluctuations in UTe 2 . Owing to the two different Te sites in the compound, we conclude that the FM spin fluctuations are dominant within ladders and the AFM spin fluctuations originate from the interladder magnetic coupling. Although AFM spin fluctuations exist in the system, the FM spin fluctuations in the ladders may play an important role in the appearance of the spin-triplet superconducting state of UTe 2 .

Regulation of Side‐Chain Symmetry for Delaying Triplet Formation and Suppressing Non‐Radiative Loss in Organic Solar Cells

Abstract The structural revolutions of non‐fullerene acceptors (NFAs) have driven continuous efficiency breakthroughs in organic solar cells (OSCs). Rational regulation of NFA structures toward efficient exciton dissociation and mitigated non‐radiative recombination is pivotal for OSCs. The incorporation of asymmetric side chains on NFAs can often achieve these goals by inducing a desirable aggregate state. However, it lacks the studies to directly correlate the side‐chain symmetry of NFAs with the exciton delocalization and triplet dynamics in OSCs. Herein, The influence of structural symmetry on the aggregate properties is systematically investigated and exciton/charge dynamics based on two developed biaxial‐conjugated NFAs with varied side‐chain symmetry. The symmetric NFA having diverse molecular packing orientations can form multiple charge transfer channels in its blend with polymer donor, which cannot be found in that comprising the asymmetric ones. Moreover, a slower rate and lower ratio of the spin‐triplet state are formed in the blend of symmetric NFA, resulting in a much lower non‐radiative voltage loss in corresponding OSCs. This study reveals the distinct advantages of symmetric NFAs in both aggregate properties and exciton/charge dynamics over those of asymmetric ones, paving the way for developing high‐performance OSCs using easier‐to‐prepare, low‐cost symmetric materials.

Triplet‐Singlet Emission of d‐Block Metal Complexes Characterized by Spin‐Orbit Natural Transition Orbitals

Abstract Spin‐orbit natural transition orbital (SO‐NTO) methodology, recently developed in our group for complete and restricted active space (CAS/RAS) wavefunction calculations, is applied to analyze triplet‐to‐singlet emission in transition metal complexes. The lowest‐energy (longest‐wavelength) spin‐forbidden transition is studied for for [Ir(pbt)2(acac)] and [Re(CO)4(pbt)] and the complexes [W(CO)4(bpy)] and [Mo(CO)4(bpy)]. For the latter complexes, spin‐forbidden transitions from higher spin‐triplet levels are additionally analyzed. SO‐NTOs are compared with spin‐free NTOs for the transitions under consideration. The major assignment of a spin‐forbidden transition is obtained from the spin‐free NTO analysis, while the source of intensity of the electronic transition is revealed by the SO‐NTOs.

Interplay of Bright Triplet and Dark Excitons Revealed by Magneto‐Photoluminescence of Individual PbS/CdS Quantum Dots

Abstract A low‐temperature polarization‐resolved magneto‐photoluminescence experiment is performed on individual PbS/CdS core/shell quantum dots (QDs). The experiment enables a direct measurement of the exciton Landé g factor and the anisotropic zero‐field splitting of the lowest emissive bright exciton triplet in PbS/CdS QDs. While anisotropic splittings of individual QDs distribute randomly in 104—325 μeV range, the exciton Landé g factors increase from 0.95 to 2.70 as the emission energy of the QD increases from 1.0 to 1.2 eV. The tight‐binding calculations allow to rationalize these trends as a direct consequence of reducing a cubic symmetry of QD via addition/removal of a few (<70) atoms from the surfaces of the PbS core. Furthermore, it is observed that while right ( σ + ) and left ( σ − ) circularly polarized photoluminescence (PL) peaks split linearly with magnetic field as expected for Zeeman effect, the energy splitting between X and Y linearly polarized PL peaks remains nearly unchanged. The theoretical study reveals rich and complex magnetic field‐induced interplay of bright triplet and dark exciton states explaining this puzzling behavior. These findings fill the missing gaps in the understanding of lead salt QDs and provide foundation for development of classical and quantum light sources operating at telecommunication wavelengths.

Anion–Cation–Anion Ion Triplet Characterization by Computation and Photoelectron Spectroscopy

Ion triplets of the chloride salts of two commonly used weakly coordinating cations are reported (i.e., Cl – ·NMe 4 + Cl – (1 – ) and Cl – ·PPh 4 + Cl – (2 – )). Negative ion photoelectron spectra at 20 K afford vertical and adiabatic detachment energies of 5.18 and 5.00 eV (1 – ) and 5.03 and 4.70 eV (2 – ), respectively. These results are well reproduced by coupled cluster calculations with single, double, and perturbative triple excitations (CCSD(T)) whereas M06-2X is systematically too small by ~0.3 eV (i.e., 7 kcal mol –1 ). The structures of both 1 – and 2 – have five or six C–H···Cl – interactions that stabilize these cluster anions by 32 (1 – ) and 27 (2 – ) kcal mol –1 as given by their chloride dissociation enthalpies. In conclusion, these values drop to 7.4 and 3.8 kcal mol –1 in dichloromethane based up conductor-like polarizable continuum model calculations and suggest that X – ·M + X – ion triplets with a weakly coordinating cation maybe the reactive form of salts under some conditions.

Spin Dynamics of Quintet and Triplet States Resulting from Singlet Fission in Oriented Terrylenediimide and Quaterrylenediimide Films

Singlet fission in organic semiconductors provides an important opportunity to study high-spin states in electronically coupled chromophores. Photoexcitation of oriented, crystalline films of N,N-bis(pentadec-8-yl)terrylene-3,4:11,12-bis(dicarboximide) (TDI) and N,N-bis (pentadec-8-yl)quaterrylene-3,4:13,14-bis(dicarboximide) (QDI) result in the formation of the correlated triplet pair quintet state, 5 (T 1 T 1 ) and its subsequent dissociation into two triplet (T-1) excitons. Time-resolved electron paramagnetic resonance (TREPR) spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography are used to show that the orientation dependence of 5 (T 1 T 1 ) spin dynamics is retained as it dissociates into two T 1 excitons, while such information is lost in a randomly oriented sample. In addition, the spin dynamics depend on how the molecules are oriented relative to the external applied magnetic field. Dissociation of 5 (T 1 T 1 ) to form two T 1 excitons is more efficient in TDI and leads to a longer T-1 lifetime than in QDI, making TDI a more viable candidate for photovoltaic applications. Since QDI readily forms a highly oriented film, and the lifetime of its 5 (T 1 T 1 ) state is longer than that of TDI, it may be a good candidate for quantum information science applications that require the generation of a quantum- entangled, four-spin state.

Long-Lived Triplet Excited State in a Heterogeneous Modified Carbon Nitride Photocatalyst

Heterogeneous carbon nitrides have numerous advantages as photocatalysts, including strong light absorption, tunable band edges, and scalability, but their performance and continued development are limited by fast charge recombination and an under-developed mechanistic understanding of photodriven interfacial electron transfer. These shortcomings are a result of complex photophysics, leading to rate asynchrony between oxidation and reduction, as well as redox processes driven out of electronic trap states rather than excited states. We show that a well-defined triplet excited state in cyanamide-modified carbon nitride is realized with appropriately sized particles. The utility of this long-lived excited state is demonstrated by its ability to drive a hydroamidation photoredox cycle. By the tuning of the particle size of CN x , the oxidation–reduction photochemistry of carbon nitride may be balanced to achieve a redox-neutral closed photocatalytic cycle. Here, these results uncover a triplet excited state chemistry for appropriately sized CNx particles that preludes a rich energy and electron transfer photochemistry for these materials.
