Probing Quantum Anomalous Hall States in Twisted Bilayer WSe 2 via Attractive Polaron Spectroscopy

Moiré superlattices in semiconductors exhibit a rich variety of interaction-induced topological states, including quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effects. A recent study hinted that twisted WSe 2 homobilayer (tWSe 2 ) could host a QAH state but lacked direct evidence of ferromagnetism, a key hallmark of this phase. Here, we report the first direct evidence of QAH states in tWSe 2 with spontaneous ferromagnetism. Specifically, we employ polarization-resolved attractive polaron spectroscopy on a dual-gated, 2° tWSe 2 and observe direct signatures of spontaneous time-reversal symmetry breaking at hole filling 𝜈 = 1. Together with a Chern number (𝐶) measurement via Streda formula analysis, we identify this magnetized state as a topological state, characterized by 𝐶 = 1. Furthermore, we demonstrate that these topological and magnetic properties are tunable via a finite displacement field, between a QAH ferromagnetic state and an antiferromagnetic state. Our findings position tWSe 2 as a highly versatile, stable, and optically addressable platform for investigating topological order and strong correlations in two-dimensional landscapes.

Moiré and beyond in transition metal dichalcogenide twisted bilayers

Abstract Fabricating van der Waals bilayer heterostructures (BL-HS) by stacking the same or different two-dimensional layers, offers a unique physical system with rich electronic and optical properties. Twist-angle between component layers has emerged as a remarkable parameter that can control the period of lateral confinement, and nature of the exciton (Coulomb bound electron–hole pair) in reciprocal space thus creating exotic physical states including moiré excitons (MXs). In this review article, we focus on opto-electronic properties of excitons in transition metal dichalcogenide semiconductor twisted BL-HS. We look at existing evidence of MXs in localized and strongly correlated states, and at nanoscale mapping of moiré superlattice and lattice-reconstruction. This review will be helpful in guiding the community as well as motivating work in areas such as near-field optical measurements and controlling the creation of novel physical states.

Fractional Chern insulators in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene

Fractional Chern insulators (FCIs) are lattice analogues of fractional quantum Hall states that may provide a new avenue towards manipulating non-Abelian excitations. Early theoretical studies have predicted their existence in systems with flat Chern bands and highlighted the critical role of a particular quantum geometry. However, FCI states have been observed only in Bernal-stacked bilayer graphene (BLG) aligned with hexagonal boron nitride (hBN), in which a very large magnetic field is responsible for the existence of the Chern bands, precluding the realization of FCIs at zero field. By contrast, magic-angle twisted BLG supports flat Chern bands at zero magnetic field and therefore offers a promising route towards stabilizing zero-field FCIs. Here we report the observation of eight FCI states at low magnetic field in magic-angle twisted BLG enabled by high-resolution local compressibility measurements. The first of these states emerge at 5 T, and their appearance is accompanied by the simultaneous disappearance of nearby topologically trivial charge density wave states. We demonstrate that, unlike the case of the BLG/hBN platform, the principal role of the weak magnetic field is merely to redistribute the Berry curvature of the native Chern bands and thereby realize a quantum geometry favourable for the emergence of FCIs. Our findings strongly suggest that FCIs may be realized at zero magnetic field and pave the way for the exploration and manipulation of anyonic excitations in flat moiré Chern bands.

Experimental signature of layer skyrmions and implications for band topology in twisted WSe 2 bilayers

Twisted homobilayers of transition-metal dichalcogenides have been established as an ideal platform for studying strong correlation phenomena, as exemplified by the recent discovery of fractional Chern insulator states in twisted MoTe 2 , as well as Chern insulators and unconventional superconductivity in twisted WSe 2 . In these systems, a non-trivial topology in the strongly layer-hybridized regime can arise from a spatial patterning of interlayer tunnelling amplitudes and layer-dependent potentials that yields a lattice of layer skyrmions. Here, in this work, we report experimental signatures of skyrmion textures in the layer degree of freedom of rhombohedral-stacked twisted WSe 2 homobilayers. Using scanning tunnelling spectroscopy that separately resolves the Γ-valley and K-valley moiré electronic states, we reveal opposite layer polarizations of the K valley at two different lattice sites with opposite stacking order within the moiré unit cell. These findings are consistent with the theoretically predicted layer-skyrmion texture. We also use our experimental results to parameterize a common continuum model of moiré bands in twisted bilayers, further establishing a direct correlation between the shape of the local density of states in real space and the topology of the topmost moiré band.
