A biomimetic approach to fast selection of optimal controlled variables using multiagent algorithms and a decomposition approach

Selection of primary controlled variables (CVs) with due consideration of economic loss and ease of control is an important step for achieving optimal plant operation under design and off-design conditions. However, the computational expense of the combinatorial optimization step that is undertaken for CV selection renders the existing approaches unaffordable for fast selection of optimal CVs. Two approaches are proposed in this paper for improving the computational efficiency of the optimization step. Typically, the CV selection process is typically executed by considering the entire plant together. Opposed to that, the first approach proposed here seeks to decompose the process plant into multiple partitions based on the connectivity strength. Then the CV selection algorithm can be executed on each partition independently. The decomposition algorithm is biomimetic and has been developed, in analogy to neuroscience, mimicking how the information about the connectivity information is extracted using a dynamic casual model. This approach can significantly decrease the number of combinatorial optimization problems that needs to be solved and facilitates parallelization of the solution. In the second approach, a multiagent optimization framework is proposed that utilizes metaheuristic optimization strategies such as the efficient ant colony algorithm, simulated annealing and the genetic algorithm. These two approaches can be used by themselves or in combination. This framework enables cooperative search by a group of algorithmic agents facilitated through an information sharing protocol. These two approaches are applied to a toy problem and an acid gas removal unit as part of an integrated gasification combined cycle. This study shows how the computational time and economic and control performance of the optimal CV sets vary as the number of partitions are changed.

Mixed-Strategy Chance Constrained Optimal Control

This paper presents a novel chance constrained optimal control (CCOC) algorithm that chooses a control action probabilistically. A CCOC problem is to find a control input that minimizes the expected cost while guaranteeing that the probability of violating a set of constraints is below a user-specified threshold. We show that a probabilistic control approach, which we refer to as a mixed control strategy, enables us to obtain a cost that is better than what deterministic control strategies can achieve when the CCOC problem is nonconvex. The resulting mixed-strategy CCOC problem turns out to be a convexification of the original nonconvex CCOC problem. Furthermore, we also show that a mixed control strategy only needs to "mix" up to two deterministic control actions in order to achieve optimality. Building upon an iterative dual optimization, the proposed algorithm quickly converges to the optimal mixed control strategy with a user-specified tolerance.

Comparative Analysis of ANN and LSTM Prediction Accuracy and Cooling Energy Savings through AHU-DAT Control in an Office Building

This paper proposes the optimal algorithm for controlling the HVAC system in the target building. Previous studies have analyzed pre-selected algorithms without considering the unique data characteristics of the target building, such as location, climate conditions, and HVAC system type. To address this, we compare the accuracy of cooling load prediction using ANN and LSTM algorithms, widely used in building energy research, to determine the optimal algorithm for HVAC control in the target building. We develop a simulation model calibrated with actual data to ensure data reliability and compare the energy consumption of the existing HVAC control method and the two algorithms-based methods. Results show that the ANN algorithm, with a CV(RMSE) of 12.7%, has a higher prediction accuracy than the LSTM algorithm, CV(RMSE) of 17.3%, making it a more suitable algorithm for HVAC control. Furthermore, implementing the ANN-based approach results in a 3.2% cooling energy reduction from the optimal control of Air Handling Unit (AHU) Discharge Air Temperature (DAT) compared to the fixed DAT at 12.8 °C in a representative day. This study demonstrates that ML-based HVAC system control can effectively reduce cooling energy consumption in HVAC systems, providing an effective strategy for energy conservation and improved HVAC system efficiency.

Comparison of Controller and Flight Deck Algorithm Performance During Interval Management with Dynamic Arrival Trees (STARS)

Managing the interval between arrival aircraft is a major part of the en route and TRACON controller s job. In an effort to reduce controller workload and low altitude vectoring, algorithms have been developed to allow pilots to take responsibility for, achieve and maintain proper spacing. Additionally, algorithms have been developed to create dynamic weather-free arrival routes in the presence of convective weather. In a recent study we examined an algorithm to handle dynamic re-routing in the presence of convective weather and two distinct spacing algorithms. The spacing algorithms originated from different core algorithms; both were enhanced with trajectory intent data for the study. These two algorithms were used simultaneously in a human-in-the-loop (HITL) simulation where pilots performed weather-impacted arrival operations into Louisville International Airport while also performing interval management (IM) on some trials. The controllers retained responsibility for separation and for managing the en route airspace and some trials managing IM. The goal was a stress test of dynamic arrival algorithms with ground and airborne spacing concepts. The flight deck spacing algorithms or controller managed spacing not only had to be robust to the dynamic nature of aircraft re-routing around weather but also had to be compatible with two alternative algorithms for achieving the spacing goal. Flight deck interval management spacing in this simulation provided a clear reduction in controller workload relative to when controllers were responsible for spacing the aircraft. At the same time, spacing was much less variable with the flight deck automated spacing. Even though the approaches taken by the two spacing algorithms to achieve the interval management goals were slightly different they seem to be simpatico in achieving the interval management goal of 130 sec by the TRACON boundary.

The ATAMM procedure model for concurrent processing of large grained control and signal processing algorithms

An overview is presented of a model for describing data and control flow associated with the execution of large-grained, decision-free algorithms in a special distributed computer environment. The ATAMM (Algorithm-To-Architecture Mapping Model) model provides a basis for relating an algorithm to its execution in a dataflow multicomputer environment. The ATAMM model features a marked graph Petri net description of the algorithm behavior with regard to both data and control flow. The model provides an analytical basis for calculating performance bounds on throughput characteristics which are demonstrated here.

Preliminary flight evaluation of an engine performance optimization algorithm

A performance-seeking control (PSC) algorithm has undergone initial flight test evaluation in subsonic operation of a PW 1128-engined F-15; this algorithm is designed to optimize the quasi-steady performance of an engine for three primary modes: (1) minimum fuel consumption, (2) minimum fan-turbine inlet temperature (FTIT), and (3) maximum thrust. The flight test results have verified a thrust-specific fuel consumption reduction of 1 percent, up to 100 R decreases in FTIT, and increases of as much as 12 percent in maximum thrust. PSC technology promises to be of value in next-generation tactical and transport aircraft.

Model Based Predictive Control for Frequency Support in Multi-port Autonomous Reconfigurable Solar Plants

Primary frequency support functionality can be an added advantage for any new grid integrated power electronics resource. With increased penetration of power electronics resources, inertial and primary frequency response capabilities are decreasing. In this research paper, an advanced model-based predictive control (MBPC) algorithm for providing frequency support to a new topology of integrated photovoltaic(PV), batterybased energy storage systems (ESS), and high-voltage direct current (HV dc) systems called multi-port autonomus reconfigurable solar (MARS) plants is based on the synchronverter-based control. The simulation of MARS-HV dc system with proposed control strategy is simulated and validated for MARS connected to low short circuit ratio (SCR) grids in PSCAD/EMTDC simulation environment. The control algorithm proposed showcases better performance in terms of frequency nadir improvement and frequency steady state improvemnt with respect to no frequency control.

PSC algorithm description

An overview of the performance seeking control (PSC) algorithm and details of the important components of the algorithm are given. The onboard propulsion system models, the linear programming optimization, and engine control interface are described. The PSC algorithm receives input from various computers on the aircraft including the digital flight computer, digital engine control, and electronic inlet control. The PSC algorithm contains compact models of the propulsion system including the inlet, engine, and nozzle. The models compute propulsion system parameters, such as inlet drag and fan stall margin, which are not directly measurable in flight. The compact models also compute sensitivities of the propulsion system parameters to change in control variables. The engine model consists of a linear steady state variable model (SSVM) and a nonlinear model. The SSVM is updated with efficiency factors calculated in the engine model update logic, or Kalman filter. The efficiency factors are used to adjust the SSVM to match the actual engine. The propulsion system models are mathematically integrated to form an overall propulsion system model. The propulsion system model is then optimized using a linear programming optimization scheme. The goal of the optimization is determined from the selected PSC mode of operation. The resulting trims are used to compute a new operating point about which the optimization process is repeated. This process is continued until an overall (global) optimum is reached before applying the trims to the controllers.

Algorithms for software development version control and change detection

Simple computer algorithms for processing source program and text data files in order to extract change detection, version control, version history, and current status information are described. These algorithms presuppose that it is possible to attach to each record of the source files a 6-character code, placed within delimiters that will cause the compiler, or other using program, to ignore this code field. The code contains a 2-character code for a character-by-character position-sensitive checksum of the record, another for the record number in the file, and a third for the data on which the encoding took place. Once the source file has been thus encoded, it is possible to detect the following transactions on the file since the most recent version coding; (1) addition of new records (having no version code), (2) modification of existing records, (3) deletion of a number of records, (4) movement and/or duplication of existing records, and (5) modification and duplication of records. In addition, it is possible to extract a version history of the number of records created or modified by date. A special file listing program is described which prints the file records without showing the version codes, but places a "change bar" at the right margin whenever a change is detected. The program also provides a list of changed pages and a version history.

Entry Guidance Design and Post-Flight Performance of the Mars 2020 Mission

Like its predecessor Mars Science Laboratory, the Mars 2020 mission successfully utilized a derivative of the Apollo Entry Terminal Point Controller guidance algorithm, whereby bank angle controls range flown along a trajectory. The flight performance of this algorithm in conjunction with a range-trigger for parachute deploy delivered the Perseverance rover to 1.7 km from the expected touchdown location within an ellipse of 7.5 x 5.2 km. This miss distance is largely attributed to atmospheric and aerodynamic modeling uncertainties between the design and as-flown trajectory. This algorithm for guided entry continues to provide a solid basis for Mars missions to improve upon.

Parallel pivoting combined with parallel reduction and fill-in control

Parallel algorithms for triangularization of large, sparse, and unsymmetric matrices are presented. The method combines the parallel reduction with a new parallel pivoting technique, control over generation of fill-ins and check for numerical stability, all done in parallel with the work being distributed over the active processes. The parallel pivoting technique uses the compatibility relation between pivots to identify parallel pivot candidates and uses the Markowitz number of pivots to minimize fill-in. This technique is not a preordering of the sparse matrix and is applied dynamically as the decomposition proceeds.

An expert system to perform on-line controller restructuring for abrupt model changes

This paper presents the work in progress on an expert system utilized to tune and reconfigure airframe/engine control systems on-line in real time in response to structural or battle damage failures. The closed loop system is monitored constantly for changes in performance and structure, which detection prompts the expert system to select and apply a particular control restructuring algorithm based on the severity and type of damage. Control restructuring algorithms that have been implemented handle most failure cases involving actuator damage (control mixer) and many instances where the system dynamics are altered as well (modified control mixer).

Development of an optimal automatic control law and filter algorithm for steep glideslope capture and glideslope tracking

A digital automatic control law to capture a steep glideslope and track the glideslope to a specified altitude is developed for the longitudinal/vertical dynamics of a CTOL aircraft using modern estimation and control techniques. The control law uses a constant gain Kalman filter to process guidance information from the microwave landing system, and acceleration from body mounted accelerometer data. The filter outputs navigation data and wind velocity estimates which are used in controlling the aircraft. Results from a digital simulation of the aircraft dynamics and the control law are presented for various wind conditions.
