Lithium-Ion Small Cell Battery Shorting Study

Positive Temperature Coefficient (PTC) provides adequate sustained hard short protection for AEA batteries with up to 8 cells in series. PTC cannot protect against sustained hard short in AEA batteries with 10 cells or more in series. Protective fused connector is a proven way to protect larger batteries from hard short damage: a) Hard short not credible in unmanned missions; b) However, recommended during ground handling; c) Inexpensive item. Preliminary diode protection scheme has passed manned space safety requirements for high voltage batteries. SCM confirmed fused connector did not affect battery health, however, this affect of hard short on the its long calendar and cycle life performance needs to be verified.

GOPEX at the Starfire Optical Range

The Starfire Optical Range successfully conducted laser upink experiments to the Galileo spacecraft during the early morning hours of December 9, 10, 11, and 12, 1992, when the spacecraft was at ranges between 700,000 and 3 million km from Earth. Analysts at JPL have reported as many as 79 pulse detections by the spacecraft. The best weather conditions occurred on the second night when 37 pulses were detected with as many as five on one frame. Signal levels at the spacecraft generally agree with predictions.

HRMS Sky Survey Wideband Feed System Design for DSS 24 Beam Waveguide Antenna

The High-Resolution Microwave Survey (HRMS) Sky Survey project will be implemented on the DSS 24 beam waveguide (BWG) antenna over the frequency range of 2.86 to 10 GHz. Two wideband, ring-loaded, corrugated feed horns were designed to cover this range. The horns match the frequency-dependent gain requirements for the DSS 24 BWG system. The performance of the feed horns and the calculated system performance of DSS 24 are presented.

An ESR study of the UV degradation of FEP

Spacecraft in low earth orbit are subjected to significant levels of high energy radiation, including ultraviolet (UV) and visible ultraviolet (VUV) wavelengths. The effects of UV radiation are enhanced over those at the surface of the earth, where the only incident wavelengths are greater than 290 nm. In low earth orbit the incident UV wavelengths extend below 290 nm into the VUV region, where the Lyman alpha-emissions of atomic hydrogen occur at 121 nm. In addition to electromagnetic radiation, in low earth orbit polymer materials may also be subjected to atomic oxygen particle radiation, which will result in direct oxidation of the polymer.

Toward Large Field-of-view X-ray Spectrometers with Magnetic Microcalorimeters

A future X-ray telescope mission like Lynx, a X-ray flagship mission concept, requires a large field of view, high energy resolution, and high spatial resolution. The Magnetic Microcalorimeter (MMC) detectors we are developing for such a mission feature a 5-arcminute field of view, approximately 100,000 pixels, each spanning 0.5–1 arcsecond. These detectors require the readout of 8,000 sensors. Three different array types have been designed to meet scientific goals, two of which utilize thermal multiplexing to reduce the number of readout channels in a scheme called “Hydra.” We are currently fabricating detectors on a recently completed buried wiring wafer with connections to every sensor. The sensors are read out using a microwave multiplexer (μMUX) with flux ramp modulation. A single μMUX can read out approximately 1,000 sensors with only two feed lines. We will report on the test of the first two-dimensional μMUX chip, consisting of 78 resonators. μMUX chips that pass screening will be directly bonded to MMC array chips using indium bump bonding. In parallel, we have tested a kinetic inductance traveling wave parametric amplifier (KI-TWPA) to amplify signals at low temperatures. The KI-TWPA exhibits extremely low internal noise, approaching the standard quantum limit. Since the energy resolution of an MMC is primarily limited by the readout system, the KI-TWPA is an ideal amplifier for MMCs with μMUX readout. We recently measured the readout noise of a μMUX with a KI-TWPA, demonstrating its capability for reading out MMC arrays. We present the design and fabrication of the latest MMC detectors, along with its readout performance.

Nickel cadmium battery performance modelling

The development of a model to predict cell/battery behavior given databases of temperature is described. The model accommodates batteries of various structural as well as thermal designs. Cell internal design modifications can be accommodated as long as the databases reflect the cell's performance characteristics. Operational parameters can be varied to simulate any number of charge or discharge methods under any orbital regime. The flexibility of the model stems from the broad scope of input variables and allows the prediction of battery performance under simulated mission or test conditions.

An Ultra-long Life, High-performance, Flexible Li-CO2Battery Based on Multifunctional Carbon Electrocatalysts

Integrating CO2 utilization and renewable energy delivery/storage, the rechargeable Li–CO2 battery has been considered as a promising candidate for next-generation secondary batteries. However, high-performance catalyst(s) for efficient formation and decomposition of the discharge product, Li2CO3, are an imperative part of a Li–CO2 battery. The development of flexible Li–CO2 batteries extends their applications into compliant and wearable devices/systems, but at the same time imposes a big challenge for battery fabrication and lifetime enhancement. In this study, a rechargeable quasi-solidus flexible Li–CO2 battery was designed and fabricated using highly active N,S-doped carbon nanotubes (N,S-doped CNTs) as the cathode catalyst, and a smart polymer gel as the flexible electrolyte. This newly-developed flexible Li–CO2 battery exhibited a capacity as high as 23560 mAh g−1 based on the catalyst mass and an ultra-long lifetime of up to 538 cycles with excellent mechanical flexibility. This work provides a platform for the design and development of high-performance flexible Li–CO2 batteries from low-cost, earth-abundant, carbon-based multifunctional cathode catalysts.

Improved multilayer insulation applications

Multilayer insulation blankets used for the attenuation of radiant heat transfer in spacecraft are addressed. Typically, blanket effectiveness is degraded by heat leaks in the joints between adjacent blankets and by heat leaks caused by the blanket fastener system. An approach to blanket design based upon modular sub-blankets with distributed seams and upon an associated fastener system that practically eliminates the through-the-blanket conductive path is described. Test results are discussed providing confirmation of the approach. The specific case of the thermal control system for the optical assembly of the Space Telescope is examined.

Development of new sealed bipolar lead-acid battery

New light weight composite bipolar plates which can withstand the corrosive environment of the lead acid battery have made possible the construction of a sealed bipolar lead acid battery that promises to achieve very high specific power levels and substantially higher energy densities than conventional lead acid batteries. Performance projections based on preliminary experimental results show that the peak specific power of the battery can be as high as 90 kW/kg, and that a specific power of 5 kW/kg can be sustained over several thousand pulses.

Multikilowatt hydrogen-nickel oxide battery system

The potential of the H2-NiO battery for terrestrial applications was assessed. A multicell design approach that differs significantly from the aerospace individual pressure vessel was used. A number of experimental 100-Ah cells were built to evaluate the new design concepts and components. The experimental cells provided the input needed for a multicell battery design. It is found that new multicell H2-NiO battery has a number of potential advantages for aerospace applications such as the manned space station. The advantages are discussed, and a design concept is presented for a multikilowatt battery in a lightweight pressure vessel.

Calibration of the Receiver Channel for the GOPEX Precursor Experiments

Calibration measurements for the cooled (253 K) photomultiplier tube (PMT) detector, used on the receiver channel of the transmit/receive (T/R) switch for GOPEX, were conducted in the laboratory. A pulsed frequency-doubled neodymium:yttrium-aluminum-garnet (Nd:YAG) laser was used to direct 532-mn light on the PMT. By monitoring the energy per pulse of the light incident on the PMT, the minimum number of photons detected could be determined. These results agreed with the photon flux back-calculated from the PMT output waveform. Approximately 700 incident photons arriving during a temporal pulse width of approximately 65 nsec were detected with a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of approximately 1. Other receiver channel characteristics, such as PMT dark currents, optical transmission, and interference filter sensitivity to angle of light incidence, were also measured.

Crystal Growth of Selected II-VI Semiconducting Alloys By Directional Solidification

A Hg 0.84 Zn 0.16 Te alloy crystal was back-melted and partially resolidified during the first United States Microgravity Laboratory (USML-1) mission in the Marshall Space Flight Center's Crystal Growth Furnace. The experiment was inadvertently terminated at about 30% of planned completion. Nonetheless, it was successfully demonstrated that HgZnTe alloy ingots partially grown and quenched on the ground can be back-melted and regrown in space under nearly steady state growth conditions. An identical 'ground-truth' experiment was performed following the mission. Preliminary results are presented for both crystals, as well as for a series of other crystals grown prior to the mission for the purposes of optimizing in-flight growth conditions.
