Results of module electrical measurement of the DOE 46-kilowatt procurement

Current-voltage measurements have been made on terrestrial solar cell modules of the DOE/JPL Low Cost Silicon Solar Array procurement. Data on short circuit current, open circuit voltage, and maximum power for the four types of modules are presented in normalized form, showing distribution of the measured values. Standard deviations from the mean values are also given. Tests of the statistical significance of the data are discussed.

Trajectory module of the NASA Ames Research Center aircraft synthesis program ACSYNT

A program was developed to calculate trajectories for both military and commercial aircraft for use in the aircraft synthesis program, ACSYNT. The function of the trajectory module was to calculate the changes in the vehicle's flight conditions and weight, as fuel is consumed, during the flying of one or more missions. The trajectory calculations started with a takeoff, followed by up to 12 phases chosen from among the following: climb, cruise, acceleration, combat, loiter, descent, and paths. In addition, a balanced field length was computed. The emphasis was on relatively simple formulations and analytic expressions suitable for rapid computation since a prescribed trajectory had to be calculated many times in the process of converging an aircraft design, or finding an optimum configuration. The trajectory module consists of about 2500 cards and operational on a CDC 7600 computer.

Effects of particle drift on cosmic ray transport. II - Analytical solution to the modulation problem with no latitudinal diffusion

An analytical solution to a model of the modulation of galactic cosmic rays in the presence of particle drifts is presented and discussed. The solution assumes an energy-independent radial diffusion coefficient proportional to distance and no latitudinal diffusion, and includes energy-independent particle drift velocities similar to those expected in a Parker spiral magnetic field with an equatorial current sheet. The solutions clearly demonstrate the large effects of drifts on the modulated cosmic-ray intensity. For values of the radial diffusion coefficient and particle drift velocity which are plausible for 1-GV-rigidity protons, the logarithmic radial gradient in the inner solar system is reduced by more than a factor of 5 over the value calculated in the absence of drifts. It is found that even for much smaller values of particle drift velocity and radial diffusion coefficient, such as might be expected for protons with energies of the order of 10 MeV, the effects of the drifts can be substantial.

Electronic heterodyne recording and processing of optical holograms using phase modulated reference waves

The use of a phase-modulated reference wave for the electronic heterodyne recording and processing of a hologram is described. Heterodyne recording is used to eliminate the self-interference terms of a hologram and to create a Leith-Upatnieks hologram with coaxial object and reference waves. Phase modulation is also shown to be the foundation of a multiple-view hologram system. When combined with hologram scale transformations, heterodyne recording is the key to general optical processing. Spatial filtering is treated as an example.

Analysis and design of the Multimission Modular Spacecraft hydrazine propulsion module

The translational velocity increment, stabilization and control requirements, vehicle weight, and geometric considerations of the Multimission Modular Spacecraft (MMS) provided the basic data on which to initiate the analysis and design of the hydrazine propulsion modules. The Landsat D was used as the mission model. Tradeoff studies were conducted on thrust level, thruster location, and clustering arrangement together with tankage volume and location. The impact of the use of single and dual seat thruster valves on plumbing configuration, reliability, and overall system cost was studied in detail. Conceptual designs of a recommended propulsion module configuration for both the Delta 3910 and Shuttle were prepared.

JSC space base/power module studies

Users of the Orbiter/Spacelab combination will require both higher electrical power and longer duration than is available with the current baseline system. Present Orbiter/Spacelab mission capability is primarily constrained by the hydrogen and oxygen available to generate power in the Orbiter fuel cells. It is also necessary to assure that considerable attitude or point flexibility is retained to assure efficient operation of the Orbiter radiator cooling system. Beyond these early limitations, it is foreseen that orbital operations will eventually need even greater quantities of the basic space utilities: electrical power; heat rejection; and attitude control. Such operations, forecasted for the mid to late 1980's, will be best accommodated by a module stored in orbit that can furnish these to a docked Orbiter/Spacelab or other vehicles. The Orbital Service Module concept to provide for these services is presented.

Basic avionics module design for general aviation aircraft

The design of an advanced digital avionics system (basic avionics module) for general aviation aircraft operated with a single pilot under IFR conditions is described. The microprocessor based system provided all avionic functions, including flight management, navigation, and lateral flight control. The mode selection was interactive with the pilot. The system used a navigation map data base to provide operation in the current and planned air traffic control environment. The system design included software design listings for some of the required modules. The distributed microcomputer uses the IEEE 488 bus for interconnecting the microcomputer and sensors.

A zero G fluid drop injector for the drop dynamics module spacelab experiment

A fluid drop injector was developed to form and release fluid drops into free drift within an experimental apparatus known as the Drop Dynamics Module which is to be flown on an earth orbiting Spacelab. To verify the design concept, a breadboard injector was flown on the NASA KC-135 zero g airplane after which more extensive laboratory 1 g tests were performed to improve the injector design and enable it to meet the module's functional requirements. The breadboard fluid drop injector will be modified and upgraded to flight hardware.

Module failure isolation circuit for paralleled inverters

A module failure isolation circuit is described which senses and averages the collector current of each paralled inverter power transistor and compares the collector current of each power transistor the average collector current of all power transistors to determine when the sensed collector current of a power transistor in any one inverter falls below a predetermined ratio of the average collector current. The module associated with any transistor that fails to maintain a current level above the predetermined radio of the average collector current is then shut off. A separate circuit detects when there is no load, or a light load, to inhibit operation of the isolation circuit during no load or light load conditions.

Circuit for automatic load sharing in parallel converter modules

A nondissipative circuit for automatic load sharing in parallel converter modules having push-pull power transistors is presented. Each transistor has a separate current-sensing transformer and an impedance-adjusting transformer in series with its collector. The impedance-adjusting transformer functions as a current-controlled variable impedance that is responsive to the difference between the peak collector current of the transistor and the average peak current of all collector currents of power transistors in all modules, thereby to control the collector currents of all power transistors with reference to the average peak collector current.

Solar cell module

An improved solar cell module for use in terrestrial environments is disclosed. It is characterized by: (1) an internally reflective plate having a planar surface of incidence and an opposed textured surface (2) a plurality of uniformly spaced silicon solar cells having the active surfaces thereof bonded to portions of the textured surface, and (3) a layer of diffusely reflective matter applied to the textured surface in surrounding relation with the solar cells for reflecting solar energy. The solar energy then strikes the surface of incidence at such angles as to be internally re-reflected and caused to progress toward the active surfaces of the solar cells, whereby concentration of incident flux on the solar cell is achieved without increased module depth.

The Space Shuttle Ground Terminal Delta Modulation System

Shuttle voice processing uses a Variable Slope Delta Modulation scheme which is a variant of the ABATE algorithm. This paper summarizes the ground terminal subsystem which processes the multiplexed voice and telemetry data digital sequence in the downlink processing and digitizes the voice signal in the uplink processing. The Delta Modulation System (DMS) performance characteristics are given in terms of an intelligibility test score and in terms of time and frequency responses measured on a production system developed for NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. Implementation details of the encoder and decoder algorithms are given in terms of the circuit logic used to implement them.

Engineering aspects of a thermal control subsystem for the 25 kW power module

The paper presents the key trade study results, analysis results, and the recommended thermal control approach for the 25 kW power module defined by NASA. Power conversion inefficiencies and component heat dissipation results in a minimum heat rejection requirement of 9 kW to maintain the power module equipment at desired temperature levels. Additionally, some cooling capacity should be provided for user payloads in the sortie and free-flying modes. The baseline thermal control subsystem includes a dual-loop-pumped Freon-21 coolant with the heat rejected from deployable existing orbiter radiators. Thermal analysis included an assessment of spacecraft orientations, radiator shapes and locations, and comparison of hybrid heat pipe and all liquid panels.
