As NASA prepares for Mars colonization, resource conservation will be critical for survival. Artificial Intelligence (AI) powered waste sorting technologies, already emerging on Earth, offer promising solutions for recycling and material recovery. These systems use advanced sensors and machine learning algorithms to identify and separate materials with remarkable accuracy. On Mars, where every item has significant value, efficient recycling will be essential to reduce resupply needs and support closed-loop life support systems. This paper explores how terrestrial AI-based trash sorting technologies can be adapted for Martian conditions, focusing on challenges such as the harsh surface environment, minimizing system mass, power, volume, and estimating waste composition. Addressing these issues will be key to enabling sustainable operations on the Red Planet.
Optimal re-entry trajectories are generated for reusable launch vehicles which minimize: (1) the heat absorbed at the vehicle surface, (2) the lower surface temperature, and (3) the heat absorbed by the internal structure. The approach uses the energy state approximation technique and a finite control volume heat transfer code coupled to a flight path integration code. These trajectories are compared to the optimal re-entry trajectory minimizing the integrated convective heat rate to determine which trajectory produces the minimum internal structural temperatures for a given thermal protection system. Three different thermal protection systems are considered: tile, blanket, and metallic.
The present results indicated that: 1. A pulsed magnetic driven fission power concept, PMD-GCR is developed for closed (NER) and semi-open (NTR) operations. 2. In power mode, power is generated at alpha less than 1 for power levels of hundreds of KW or higher 3. IN semi open NTR mode, PMD-GCR generates thrust at I(sub sp) approx. 5,000 s and jet power approx. 5KW/Kg. 4. PMD-GCR is highly subcritical and is actively driven to critically. 5. Parallel path with fusion R&D needs in many areas including magnet and plasma.

Low-power analog/digital electronic circuit meters discharge of storage battery in ampere-hours. By metering discharge, one obtains indication of state of charge of battery and avoids unnecessary recharging, maintaining capacity of battery and prolonging life. Because of its small size and low power consumption, useful in such applications as portable video cameras, communication equipment on boats, portable audio equipment, and portable medical equipment.
The use of Electric Auxiliary Power Unit (EAPU) in commercial, and military aviation, and in commercial electric automobiles, is reviewed. The specifications of the battery to be used in the space shuttle are reviewed, and the possible vendors discussed. The testing activity and the reliability and the safety features are presented.

Even with it's marginal performance, Concorde has demonstrated that supersonic civil aircraft are a practical proposition. A second generation machine will need sufficiently good performance for a robust operating system that can provide reliable, frequent service with competitive economics. Additionally, the propulsion system must be acceptable environmentally. That is it must create acceptable noise levels around airports and have acceptable emissions throughout its mission including cruise. Whatever devices may be used to improve the acceptability at subsonic flight conditions, the high operating temperatures at cruise can create difficult targets for the operation of the combustion system both mechanically and in the combustion process itself. While the driving force is ever better fuel consumption and weight to achieve economic viability, a future supersonic transport engine will have cycle temperatures limited only by the mechanical integrity of the major components. The environment of the major components in modern gas turbine engines is dominated by the air delivered by the compressor system. Consequently the maximum compression temperature is governed by materials available for the turbine and compressor discs. The continued improvement of the disc material leads to combustion inlet temperatures beyond today's experience and sets difficult targets for combustion system emissions. This is worsened by the requirement being at cruise and therefore maintained for the major part of the mission. Problems such as creep and oxidation of metallic parts are also considered.

The Research Summary is a report of supporting research and development activities at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, California Institute of Technology. This bimonthly periodical is usually published in two volumes. However, for this issue, all the material has been combined into one volume. To foster a more rapid interchange of original ideas and information throughout the scientific and technical community, all authors' names have been added as bylines to the material they contributed.
Ryugu samples and CI chondrites record aqueous alteration processes in primitive, volatile-rich planetesimals and exhibit a wide range of lithologies defined by mineral assemblages and alteration degrees as proposed to be types I–VI in [4]. The similarity in lithological diversity and proportions between Ryugu and CIs suggests that they originated from parent bodies with comparable internal structures and thermal histories. However, the mechanism responsible for generating such lithological diversity within a single parent body remains unclear.
A battery system utilizes a plurality of transformers interconnected with the battery cells. The transformers each have at least one transformer core operable for magnetization in at least a first magnetic state with a magnetic flux in a first direction and a second magnetic state with a magnetic flux in a second direction. The transformer cores retain the first magnetic state and the second magnetic state without current flow through said plurality of transformers. Circuitry is utilized for switching a selected transformer core between the first and second magnetic states to sense voltage and/or balance particular cells or particular banks of cells.

Microgrids are now a common practice in distribution systems to increase resilience and reliability. However, microgrid protection remains a critical challenge, considering its requirement to operate in both grid connected and islanded, and the variability in fault characteristics under each mode of operation. This paper presents unbalanced power (S unb ) based fault detection algorithm, which considers local voltage and current unbalances to determine faults in the system. S unb is a computationally efficient fault detection algorithm that is suitable for implementation in the programmable logic of entry level protective relays. In addition, the difference in current and voltage unbalance (D n ) is used to determine the fault type. The proposed method demonstrates high sensitivity and selectivity for line-to-ground (LG), line-to-line (LL), and double line-to-ground (LLG) faults, representing the most common faults in distribution systems. It also allows relay coordination with upstream and downstream protection devices in both island and grid connected operation, while preserving grading margins. The same pickup and time multiplier settings of a particular relay for both modes of operation eliminates the need for adaptive settings, which rely on communication networks. Validation was performed with a hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) setup using Typhoon HIL real time simulator interfaced with three entry-level, SEL 751 relays. Results confirmed the algorithm’s ability to discriminate fault conditions, and determine the fault type under both operating modes, maintain fast detection times, and ensure proper protection coordination.
This study analyzes the cross-range capabilities of solid-fueled ramjets in a Martian atmosphere for applications in entry, descent, and landing. Trajectories and engine operability are characterized using Mach and dynamic pressure operational points. It is predicted that use of atmosphere-breathing propulsion will enable access to additional surface latitudes without the need for orbital plane changes. Development of an integrated design environment facilitates preliminary ramjet design and analysis, and enables sensitivity studies to identify high impact areas of technology development. In addition, additive manufacturing supports prototyping, rapid ground testing, and allows for utilization of complex geometries.
