Automatic arc welding of propulsion system tubing in close proximity to sensitive electronic devices

The planned final assembly of the Galileo spacecraft propulsion system tubing, which involves welding in close proximity to sensitive electronics, raised significant concerns about the effects of electromagnetic coupling of weld energy on CMOS and other sensitive integrated circuits. A test program was established to assess the potential of an orbital arc welder and an RF-induction brazing machine to damage sensitive electronic equipment. Test parameters were varied to assess the effectiveness of typical transient suppression practices such as grounding, bonding, and shielding. A technique was developed to calibrate the hazard levels at the victim-circuit location; this technique is described along with the results and conclusions of the test program.

Plating To Reinforce Welded Joints

Electrodeposition used to strengthen welded joints gouged, nicked, or suffered other mechanical damage. Plating cell, typically of acrylic plastic such as poly (Methylmetacrylate), is assembled around part to be plated. Areas not to be plated are masked with plater's tape. Weld area is plated in standard nickel-plating process.

Ribbon Reduces Spiking in Electron-Beam Welding

Spiking in electron-beam welding reduced by placing high-vapor-pressure substance along path of electron beam. Strip of metal having vapor pressure higher than base metal at same temperature placed in slot machined along weld line. Strip vaporizes as beam strikes it, and vapor pressure keeps surface tension from closing off top of channel. Technique used successfully on nickel alloys and aluminum alloys and effective on steel and titanium.

Welding Tubes In Place

Special welding equipment joins metal tubes that carry pressurized cyrogenic fluids. Equipment small enough to be used in confined spaces in which such tubes often mounted. Welded joints lighter in weight and more leak-proof than joints made with mechanical fittings.

The course of solar array welding technology development

Solar array welding technology is examined from its beginnings in the late 1960's to the present. The U.S. and European efforts are compared, and significant similarities are highlighted. The utilization of welding technology for space use is shown to have been influenced by a number of subtle, secondary factors.

The effects of weld-repair and hot isostatic pressing on the fracture properties of Ti-5Al-2.5Sn ELI castings

The Ti-5Al-2.5Sn extremely low interstitial alloy employed in the large castings which form the critical attachment fittings of the Space Shuttle External Tank was selected because of its high fracture resistance at cryogenic temperatures. Casting was selected over alternative fabrication methods because of its lower cost and adaptability to design changes, although it was found necessary to weld-repair surface and subsurface casting defects in order to reduce the scrap rate and maintain the inherent cost advantage of the castings. Hot Isostatic Pressing was experimentally found to heal the surface and internal defects of the castings, but did not improve tensile or fracture properties and was therefore rejected as a production technique. Production castings are instead weld-repaired, without any mechanical property degradation.

X-Ray Determination of Weld Misalinement

Simple technique uses ordinary X-ray equipment. Weld line between hemispheres of hidden spherical pressure vessel examined for misalinement between hemispheres. Central X-ray tangent to pressure vessel at weld line. Technique not limited to spheres. Also used to check alinement between insulated sections of pipelines or chemical-reaction vessels without removing insulation or interrupting flow or process.

Sorting Titanium Welding Rods

Three types of titanium welding wires identified by their resistance to current flow. Welding-wire tester quickly identifies unknown titaniumalloy wire by touching wire with test probe, and comparing meter response with standard response. Before touching wire, tip of test probe dipped into an electrolyte.

Aircraft landing dynamics facility carriage weld test program

A welded tubular structure constructed of low alloy high strength quenched and tempered steel was tested. The consistency of the mechanical strengths and chemical composition and the degree of difficulty of obtaining full strength welds with these steels is characterized. The results of constructing and testing two typical connections which are used in the structure design are reported.

Microfissuring in Electron-Beam-Welded Nickel Alloy

Mathematical model developed for microfissuring of commercial nickel alloy during electron-beam welding. Number of measured microfissures per unit length of weld plotted against excess power calculated by computer model. Excess power that above level likely to produce microfissures. In agreement with model, measured microfissures increase at rate of 4.5 per inch (1.8 per centimeter) per excess kilowatt.

Fillet Weld Stress Using Finite Element Methods

Average elastic Von Mises equivalent stresses were calculated along the throat of a single lap fillet weld. The average elastic stresses were compared to initial yield and to plastic instability conditions to modify conventional design formulas is presented. The factor is a linear function of the thicknesses of the parent plates attached by the fillet weld.

Explosive Welding of Tubular Configurated Joints for Critical Applications

Explosive welding can provide the answer to problems of permanently joining metals typically used in the aerospace industry. The explosive bonding process is a solid state bonding process enabling material incompatibility problems associated with fusion welding to be overcome. In addition, heat affected zones are eliminated thus, enhancing joint strength, properties and performance. The process requires the parts being joined to be impelled, by means of explosives, to collide with each other. Certain critical collision parameters must be met and controlled and these parameters are defined. Various component geometries which satisfy the collision parameters are described. Examples of transition joints used in the aerospace industry are described and illustrated.

Langley Research Center Standard for the Evaluation of Socket Welds

A specification utilized for the nondestructive evaluation of socket type pipe joints at Langley Research Center (LaRC) is discussed. The scope of hardware shall include, but is not limited to, all common pipe fittings: tees, elbows, couplings, caps, and so forth, socket type flanges, unions, and valves. In addition, the exterior weld of slip on flanges shall be inspected using this specification. At the discretion of the design engineer, standard practice engineer, Fracture Mechanics Engineering Section, Pressure Systems Committee, or other authority, four nondestructive evaluation techniques may be utilized exclusively, or in combination, to inspect socket type welds. These techniques are visual, radiographic, magnetic particle, and dye penetrant. Under special circumstances, other techniques (such as eddy current or ultrasonics) may be required and their application shall be guided by the appropriate sections of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (B&PVC).

Automated weld torch guidance control system

A device for automatically controlling the movement of a welding torch while welding an elongated joint is described. A charge injection television camera is carried on a movable support. The camera includes a matrix of individual light sensing video elements which generate voltages responsive to light reflected off of the joint and surrounding areas of the work piece. The voltages produced by the pixels are converted to digital words which are fed to a microprocessor for generating an error signal. This error signal is fed to a digital motor which is used to drive a movable support upon which the television camera is carried.
