Thermal expansion of 4H and 6H SiC from 5 K to 340 K

The first thermal expansion measurements of the 4H and 6H polytypes of SiC below room temperature are reported. The measurements were carried out on single-crystal specimens using high-resolution capacitive-based dilatometry. For both polytypes, the thermal expansion coefficient is below 2.4 × 10 -6 1/K near room temperature. No phase transitions are observed over the 5 K to 340 K temperature range of the measurements. The thermal expansion coefficient α of 4H SiC is slightly anisotropic for measurements parallel and perpendicular to the crystallographic c axis with α ∥ about 2.2 × 10 -7 1/K larger than α ⟂ near room temperature. For 6H SiC no discernible anisotropy is observed. The differences in anisotropy can be understood by considering the ratio of hexagonal to cubic bonds of each polytype. Narrow regions with negative thermal expansion that are within the limits of our resolution (~ 1 x 10 -8 ) are observed in the vicinity of 30 K for both specimens. In conclusion, tabulated data, polynomial fits, fit parameters, and comparison to data based on lattice-parameter measurements are provided.

Bio-inspired redox mediated electrolyte for high performance flexible supercapacitor applications over broad temperature domain

For practical supercapacitors, recent advances in electrolytes have diminished long-standing problems such chemical stability, low ionic conductivity and limited electrochemical performance. Herewith, we communicate a facile method to produce anhydrous redox-active Bio-inspired electrolytes for flexible supercapacitors with application over a broad temperature range. The glycerol (Gly) gel electrolyte consists of various fractions of potassium hydroxide (KOH) and redox active unit, i.e., ammonium molybdate, (NH 4 ) 2 MoO 4 (abbreviated as Mo), in the anhydrous state. The doped glycerol matrix acts as a framework that provides a stable gel electrolyte, forming hierarchical pathway for ion diffusion. The developed gel network with Gly-KOH-MoX (X = 3, 5, 10, and 15%, w/w) provides an effective route to carry the ions onto the pores of the electrodes. The supercapacitor with Gly-KOH5-Mo10 gel provides a specific capacitance of 328 F g –1 , and the same device achieved an energy density of 45.6 Wh kg –1 at a power density of 497 W kg –1 . In addition, the supercapacitor maintained extraordinary cyclic robustness and wide temperature tolerance. Thus, the low cost and environmentally benign, cyclic durability of Gly-KOH-Mo makes these gel electrolytes a potential candidate for use in various energy storage devices.

Ultra-thin on-chip ALD LiPON capacitors for high frequency application

Multi-layer ceramic capacitors have been used for high frequency decoupling application due to a lower overall impedance leading to fast current response. However, high parasitic inductance limits the application of these capacitors in ultra-high frequency domain. Thus, Multlayer Ceramic Capacitors (MLCCs) are placed close to the IC to improve circuit efficiency and reduce inductance. With next generation applications, the demand for frequency range has further increased which not only requires enhanced capacitor material but improved manufacturing techniques to limit the inductive path. Here, we demonstrate ALD of two different polymorphs of ultra-thin film lithium phosphorus oxynitride (LiPON) as an inorganic solid state electrolyte (SSE) for on chip capacitors for decoupling application. Both the LiPON capacitors shows an electric double layer behavior with a capacitance of 15 μF/cm 2 and a low leakage current (<20 nA/cm 2 ) at 2V. The LiPON shows EDLC behavior up to 10 kHz and beyond, both the polymorphs show an electrostatic behavior with a high dielectric constant (14). Furthermore, this dual frequency behavior along with low parasitic inductance and on chip integration allows for operation in extended frequency ranges.

Corrosion behaviors of friction welded dissimilar aluminum alloys

Highlights: • Corrosion properties of friction welded dissimilar aluminum alloys seem to be governed by the anode part in the weld. • Intense corrosion near the interface has the limited region due to insufficient ionic transport. • Self-formation of a micro-galvanic cell is a main reason for the inferior corrosion performance. - Abstract: Corrosion behaviors of the friction welded dissimilar aluminum alloys were investigated to understand how galvanic effect plays a role in altering corrosion properties of the dissimilar weld. From the fact that the weld had the similar OCP value to that of AA2017, it can be inferred that the corrosion characteristics of the weld is under the control of the AA2017 part in the weld and as a result, only the AA2017 part in the weld had experienced severe corrosion, leaving AA6063 under cathodic protection. Intense corrosion occurring near the interface implies that the area near the interface is placed under the effect of galvanic corrosion and there was the effective distance where the galvanic effect exerts an impact due to the increase in the resistance of the electrolyte with the distance from the interface. The disappearance of Warburg diffusion plot in Nyquist plots for the weld seemed to be the breakdown of the passivation layer related to the formation of the micro-galvanic cell, which in turn presented the shrinkage in the capacitance response, indicating that charge reactions in the form of corrosion occurred.

Braunite phase embedded Y2O3/MnO2-Al2O3-CaO-SiO2 glass ceramics and their properties

Highlights: • Nucleation of synthetic braunite structure (Mn{sub 7}SiO{sub 12}) on sintering of Y{sub 2}O{sub 3}/MnO{sub 2}-CaO-Al{sub 2}O{sub 3}-SiO{sub 2} glasses at 850 °C. • Lossy capacitor behaviour. • Exhibits a critical temperature in 500–600 °C range. • Conduction mechanism shift from Superlinear power law to universal dielectric response law with increase in temperature. - Abstract: Glass series (20-x)Y{sub 2}O{sub 3}-xMnO{sub 2}-20Al{sub 2}O{sub 3}-40SiO{sub 2}-20CaO (x = 5, 10, 15 and 20, mol%) have been synthesized by melt quench technique followed by sintering at 850 °C. The optical band gap of the samples is in wide semiconductor range and increased with MnO{sub 2} content. Photoluminescence study exhibits emission in Mn{sup 2+} d-states. On the other hand, hardness decreases with MnO{sub 2} content except for 10 mol% MnO{sub 2} containing glasses (YM10). The formation of braunite phase in glass ceramics induces capacitive losses. In lower temperature region, the conductivity behaviour of samples follows superlinear power law. In higher temperature region, it follows the universal law of conduction. The dielectric constant for the sintered glasses is constant with respect to temperature, approximately upto 350 °C and 1 MHz frequency. Above 350 °C, the ionic conduction dominates in all the sintered glasses. The anomaly in properties is observed when the ratio of Y{sub 2}O{sub 3}/MnO{sub 2} is 1:1.

Operando leaching of pre-incorporated Al and mechanism in transition-metal hybrids on carbon substrates for enhanced charge storage

Insufficient exposure and utilization of active sites often induces an inferior reactivity for transition-metal-based two-dimensional (2D) materials. In response, we for the first time propose a universal "nano-tailoring" strategy to incorporate abundant defects and active sites into low-crystallinity nanosheets by electrochemically leaching of Al species. With MnAl layered double hydroxides (LDHs) as a representative example, potassium-birnessite MnO 2 (AK-MnO 2 ) with oxygen vacancies and abundant edge sites is successfully produced. The oxygen vacancies are shown to help optimize the electron-transfer and ion-adsorption capability. These integrated advantages endow the AK-MnO 2 with a high capacitance value of 239 F g –1 at 100 A g –1 . By further combining with soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy techniques, we unravel that the reducibility of M 2+ in M 2+ Al-LDH serves as the key descriptor for the reconstruction rate. Here, this "nano-tailoring" strategy can provide some important implications and clues to manipulating 2D materials for efficient energy storage and conversion.

Scoping the polymer genome: A roadmap for rational polymer dielectrics design and beyond

The Materials Genome Initiative (MGI) has heralded a sea change in the philosophy of materials design. In an increasing number of applications, the successful deployment of novel materials has benefited from the use of computational methodologies, data descriptors, and machine learning. Polymers have long suffered from a lack of data on electronic, mechanical, and dielectric properties across large chemical spaces, causing a stagnation in the set of suitable candidates for various applications. Extensive efforts over the last few years have seen the fruitful application of MGI principles toward the accelerated discovery of attractive polymer dielectrics for capacitive energy storage. Here, we review these efforts, highlighting the importance of computational data generation and screening, targeted synthesis and characterization, polymer fingerprinting and machine-learning prediction models, and the creation of an online knowledgebase to guide ongoing and future polymer discovery and design. We lay special emphasis on the fingerprinting of polymers in terms of their genome or constituent atomic and molecular fragments, an idea that pays homage to the pioneers of the human genome project who identified the basic building blocks of the human DNA. As a result, by scoping the polymer genome, we present an essential roadmap for the design of polymer dielectrics, and provide future perspectives and directions for expansions to other polymer subclasses and properties.

Oxygen-deficient ammonium vanadate for flexible aqueous zinc batteries with high energy density and rate capability at -30 °C

Aqueous zinc batteries (AZBs) have received significant attention owing to environmental friendliness, high energy density and inherent safety. However, lack of high-performance cathodes has become the main bottleneck of AZBs development. Here, oxygen-deficient NH 4 V 4 O 10–x ·nH 2 O (NVOH) microspheres are synthesized and used as cathodes for AZBs. The experimental test and theoretical calculations demonstrate that the oxygen vacancies in the lattice lower the Zn 2+ diffusion energy barrier, which enables fast Zn 2+ diffusion and good electrochemical performance in a wide temperature range. The suppressed side reactions also can help to improve the low temperature performance. NVOH shows a high energy density of 372.4 Wh kg –1 and 296 Wh kg –1 at room temperature and –30 °C, respectively. Moreover, NVOH maintains a 100% capacity retention after 100 cycles at 0.1 A g –1 and ~94% capacity retention after 2600 cycles at 2 A g –1 and –30 °C. Investigation into the mechanism of the process reveals that the capacity contribution of surface capacitive behaviors is dominant and capacity attenuation is mainly caused by the decay of diffusion-controlled capacity. As a result, flexible AZBs can steadily power portable electronics under different bending states, demonstrating its great potential in wide-temperature wearable device.

Application of GO anchored mediator in a polymer electrolyte membrane for high-rate solid-state supercapacitors

Here, we synthesized a novel polymer electrolyte membrane by combining poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) and lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI) with graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets and a lithium salt of tungstosilicic acid (Li 4 SiW 12 O 40 , hereafter, referred to SiWLi). The impact of the addition of GO/SiWLi on the microstructure and morphology of the membrane were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). We found that adding the GO/SiWLi to the PVDF/LiTFSI polymer electrolyte membrane significantly reduced the pore size. Furthermore, the addition of the GO/SiWLi resulted in not only an increase of the ionic conductivity from 0.87 $\times$ 10 –2 to 3.12 $\times$ 10 –2 Scm –1 but also an increase in the lithium-ion transference number from 0.52 to 0.87. The polymer electrolyte membranes with and without GO/SiWLi were utilized to fabricate solid-state supercapacitors. The supercapacitors fabricated with the membrane containing GO/SiWLi displayed 37.2% lower equivalent series resistance and 88.2% greater specific capacitance than those fabricated using the membrane without GO/SiWLi at 200mVs –1 .

Facile synthesis of co-doped Carbon nanofibers for supercapacitor applications

Here, in this study, the synthesis and electrochemical performance of carbon nanofibers (CNFs) co-doped with aluminum (Al) and nitrogen (N) and decorated with zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles are investigated. After electrospinning polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofibers, the nanofiber mats are coated with Al and ZnO precursors by the dip coating method and converted into carbon nanofibers by thermal treatments at 850 °C. Co-doping and nanoparticle decoration affect the efficacy of carbon nanofibers as supercapacitors. With a maximal specific capacitance of 206.28 Fg -1 , it is believed that our produced carbon nanofibers, which can effectively store the renewable energy resources required to meet the rising energy demand, offer superior electrochemical properties compared to traditional supercapacitor materials. The effective incorporation of Al, N, and ZnO into the CNF structure, in conjunction with enhanced electrochemical performance, represents a significant advancement in the development of functional carbon nanofibers.

Synthesis, surface chemistry and pseudocapacitance mechanisms of VN nanocrystals derived by a simple two-step halide approach

Chloroamide precursors generated via a simple two-step ammonolysis reaction of transition metal chloride in the liquid phase at room temperature were heat treated in ammonia at moderate temperature to yield nano-sized VN crystallites. Grain growth inhibited by lowering the synthesis temperature (≈400°C) yielded agglomerated powders of spherical crystallites of cubic phase of VN with particle sizes as small as 6nm in diameter. X-ray diffraction, FTIR, mass spectroscopy (MS), and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy assessed the ammonolysis and nitridation reaction of the VCl 4 -NH 3 system. X-ray Rietveld refinement, the BET technique and high-resolution transmission microscopy (HRTEM), energy dispersive x-ray (EDX) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) helped assess the crystallographic and microstructural nature of the VN nanocrystals. The surface chemistry and redox reaction leading to the gravimetric pseudo-capacitance value of (≈855 F/g) measured for the VN nanocrystals was determined and validated using FTIR, XPS and cyclic voltammetry analyses.

Synthesis of Ti 3 C 2 T z MXene from low-cost and environmentally friendly precursors

Herein we report an approach to synthesis Ti 3 AlC 2 MAX phase and Ti 3 C 2 T z MXene from low-cost precursors, viz. recycled carbon recovered from waste tire, recycled aluminum scrap, and titanium oxide. By adjusting the ratios of the initial materials, we determined that 3TiO 2 +6Al+1.9C resulted in the purest sample of Ti 3 AlC 2 when heated at 1,350 °C for 1 h. The MXene phase was synthesized by modified minimally intensive layer delamination and acid etching under N2 purging. The final Ti 3 C 2 T z films demonstrated conductivity of 5857 ± 680 S/cm and capacitance of 285 F/g (1,012 F/cm 3 ) at 20 mV/s scan rates, which are comparable with that produced from MAX phase of high-purity elemental precursors (viz. Ti, Al and C). Choosing readily available and inexpensive precursor materials such as these allows for a drastic reduction in production cost of the MXene, as well as reducing the environmental impact of the industry.

A case study of high-temperature polyetherimide film capacitor fabrication

Capacitors, as the basic building block of power electronics and electrical systems, are the major constraint of the increasingly integrated power systems that require new capable polymer dielectric films operating at higher temperatures >125 °C. Despite tremendous research efforts on the lab scale, there remains a considerable barrier and knowledge basis for converting polymeric films to functioning capacitors desired in actual applications. Here, the authors tackled the polyetherimide (PEI) film scale up issues and developed various engineering processes for film de-wrinkling, optimal metallization, static elimination, and capacitor fabrication improvement. The authors discovered various fabrication challenges such as the electrostatic charge, metallization scheme, winding tension, and end electrode disconnects. To fabricate a high yield of PEI capacitor bobbins, it is necessary to utilize static eliminators (radioactive ionizers), moderately thick aluminum metallization (15–30 Ω/sq), and winding tension (60–100 g). It is also effective to evaluate capacitance, dielectric loss, equivalent series resistance, and thermal cycling stability of capacitors. This work sheds some light on converting PEI films and other polymeric films to capacitors on a scale up fabrication effort. The practical learning from film handling to capacitor fabrication in this work provided the necessary knowledge for manufacturing high-temperature polar film capacitors.

Expanding the interlayer spacing of MXene through nanoarchitecture design

MXenes, a diverse class of two-dimensional transition metal carbides and nitrides with distinct surface chem istries, offer remarkable electrochemical and physicochemical properties. Yet, their performance can be hindered by the intrinsic restacking of layers, which restricts surface activity. This review outlines recent advances in interlayer spacing modulation strategies designed to overcome this limitation. A wide range of guest spe cies–including mono- and polyatomic ions, small molecules, low-dimensional nanomaterials, and polymers–are discussed with respect to their intercalation mechanisms, structural effects, and capacity to introduce functional enhancements. These intercalating species interact with MXene via electrostatic forces, hydrogen bonding, redox reactions, or covalent linkages, resulting in stable, expanded nanoarchitectures. The influence of expanded spacing on capacitive behavior is briefly highlighted to illustrate its practical relevance. Although Ti 3 C 2 T x is currently the most extensively investigated MXene, applying these interlayer engineering strategies to other MXene compositions will be essential for accessing a wider range of properties and functionalities.

Improving the bulk gas transport of Fe-N-C platinum group metal-free nanofiber electrodes via electrospinning for fuel cell applications

To overcome transport limitations associated with thicker platinum group metal-free (PGM-free) electrodes, it's essential to investigate and tailor alternative electrode architectures to maximize the bulk electrode transport properties, whilst not significantly impeding electrocatalyst active site accessibility and electrode proton resistance. In this work, PGM-free nanofiber electrode mats, prepared by electrospinning a mixture of pyrolyzed Fe-N-C catalyst, Nafion ionomer and a carrier polymer Poly Acrylic acid (PAA), were compared to traditionally prepared electrodes. The morphological properties and elemental distribution of the fabricated nanofiber electrodes showed that the exterior surface of the PGM-free nanofibers was conformally covered with a thin ionomer film. Electrochemical diagnostics performed utilizing cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and H 2 -limiting current measurements, revealed an increase in electric double layer capacitance, reduction in electrode proton transport and a significant improvement in bulk-electrode gas transport properties for the nanofiber electrodes, supporting the observed performance increase from electrochemical polarization data obtained in H 2 -O 2 /Air fuel cells. At 100% RH in H2/Air, the power density of the nanofiber electrodes increased ca. 50% vs. the traditionally prepared electrodes (ca. 260 vs 175 mW cm -2 ), which was attributed to a less tortuous molecular diffusion pathway and an associated reduction in the pressure dependent and independent gas transport resistances in the nanofiber electrodes.

Rooting MnO 2 into protonated g-C 3 N 4 by intermolecular hydrogen bonding for endurable supercapacitance

Composited electrode materials for energy storage typically benefit from the merits of each component but meanwhile largely suffer from the vulnerable structural integrity during repetitive cycling. Realizing the merely physical attachment in most composited structures being too weak to survive harsh cycling, we report here a facile one-step synthesis strategy with generation of chemical bonds, more specifically, intermolecular hydrogen bonds, to tightly combine each component. Here, we demonstrate this concept by designing a composite featuring MnO 2 nanorods chemically rooted into protonated g-C 3 N 4 , where the protonation of 2D g-C 3 N 4 substrate (pg-C 3 N 4 ), the nucleation/growth of MnO 2 and the formation of hydrogen bonding between pg-C 3 N 4 and MnO 2 simultaneously occur. The obtained composite, when applied for supercapacitive energy storage, yields maximum specific capacitances of 348.4 F·g -1 at a current density of 1.0 A·g -1 as well as a high retention of ~85.0% after 10000 cycles at 6.0 A·g -1 , surpassing most previously reported composited electrode materials based on either MnO 2 or g-C 3 N 4 . Finally, we expect this work to inspire the synthesis of composited electrode materials with consolidated 3D architecture for endurable energy storage performance.

Electrochemical dynamics of imidazolium ionic liquids at graphene electrodes for energy storage applications

Electric double layer capacitors (EDLCs) are prominent energy storage systems that constitute the foundation of more reliable and sustainable energy infrastructures. Modern EDLCs often incorporate ionic liquids (ILs) as a key component in their electrolytes, leveraging the high electrochemical stability of ILs to enhance device performance. The performance and functionality of these capacitors also hinge on the interfacial behavior of ILs at electrode surfaces, which remain insufficiently understood. Here, we performed synchrotron infrared nanospectroscopy (SINS) in combination with density functional theory (DFT) calculations to investigate the electric double layers (EDLs) of three imidazolium-based ILs in a custom-designed graphene liquid cell. This approach revealed new insights into the dynamics of IL EDLs and the underpinning factors originating from the IL structures. Variations in anion size and structure were found to tune the ILs’ ability to form EDLs with compact and closely-correlated ion arrangements, which are critical for enhancing their capacitive performance. These findings highlight the intricate interactions between ions governed by their structures and charge behaviors, which underscores the opportunities for targeted design of IL-based electrolytes to optimize EDLC functionality.
