Transit Thermal Control Design for Galileo Entry Probe for Planet Jupiter

A totally passive design was completed for the thermal control of the Galileo entry probe during its transit to the planet Jupiter. The design utilizes radio isotope heater units, multilayer insulation blankets and a thermal radiator in conjunction with a design conductance support structure to achieve both the required storage and critical initial planet atmosphere entry temperatures. The probe transit thermal design was completed and verified based on thermal vacuum testing of a prototype probe thermal test model.

Spray Combustion Stability

The central purpose of this project is the improvement of liquid-fueled rocket motor design technology in order to assist the establishment of economical commercial access to space through the development of engines with enhanced performance and reliability. Specific research effort is focused on spray physics and associated combustion instability phenomena. Results concerning high pressure droplet gasification model, droplet turbulent dispersion model, and spray atomization model will contribute to the development of new computational tools for design of stable liquid propellant rocket engines.

The Cassini/Huygens Doppler Wind Experiment: Results from the Titan Descent

The primary objective of the Doppler Wind Experiment (DWE), one of the six scientific investigations comprising the payload of the ESA Huygens Probe, is a determination of the wind velocity in Titan's atmosphere. Measurements of the Doppler shift of the S-band (2040 MHz) carrier signal to the Cassini Orbiter and to Earth were recorded during the Probe descent in order to deduce wind-induced motion of the Probe to an accuracy better than 1 m s-1. An experiment with the same scientific goal was performed with the Galileo Probe at Jupiter. Analogous to the Galileo experience, it was anticipated that the frequency of the Huygens radio signal could be measured on Earth to obtain an additional component of the horizontal winds. Specific secondary science objectives of DWE include measurements of: (a) Doppler fluctuations to determine the turbulence spectrum and possible wave activity in the Titan atmosphere; (b) Doppler and signal level modulation to monitor Probe descent dynamics (e.g., spinrate/spinphase, parachute swing); (c) Probe coordinates and orientation during descent and after impact on Titan.

Turbo-Design: Open-Source Radial Equilibrium Turbomachinery Solver: Part I - Turbines

Advances in 3D Geometrical Designs and Cooling have played a significant role in improving the efficiency of turbomachinery. However, these advancements must be effectively translated back to the modeler. Machine learning can facilitate this transition. Specifically, machine learning–based loss models can bridge the gap between 3D and 1D designs, enabling modelers not only to predict velocity triangles but also to extract additional geometric features. Currently, the design tools used at NASA have not been updated to support such integration—until now. TurboDesign is an open-source, Python-based framework that replaces TD2 (LEW-11029-1) and AXOD2 (LEW-16323-1), both of which are radial equilibrium solvers for axial turbines. The goal of this update is to enable the integration of machine learning loss models into radial equilibrium equations. Additionally, TurboDesign is designed to support radial machines. This paper presents the governing equations, the assumptions underlying the code, the integration of legacy loss models, an example of machine learning model integration, and a validation comparison with CFD. High-Resolution Global Ocean Simulation in the SWOT ERA: Introducing ECCO Llc4320v2

The Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) mission is opening up new opportunities to evaluate and drive improvement in km-scale global ocean and atmosphere-ocean models via its simultaneous swath observations of sea-surface height, wind speed, and significant wave height down to 2 km scales globally. Motivated by this, we have initiated a collaborative effort at NASA Ames to run a new global ocean-sea-ice simulation in MITgcm at a nominal 1/48-deg resolution of the year 2023 that enables direct comparisons with SWOT observations. New features relative to a prior simulation at a similar resolution of the year 2012 include much more realistic tidal forcing, thermodynamic coupling in ice-shelf cavities, high-frequency hourly atmospheric forcing, much improved river runoff, double the vertical resolution in the deep ocean (173 vs 90 levels), updated bathymetry including improvements in finescale bathymetry derived from SWOT, and updated vertical mixing scheme parameters that improve the equatorial Pacific circulation.

Effects of Ground Boards on Acoustic Signals

Acoustic ground boards are used to provide hard reflective surfaces for microphones when taking outdoor measurements. These boards also have a wide variety of potential impacts on the signal received by the microphones. A comprehensive experimental campaign was completed in which various ground board and microphone configurations were tested to determine their effects on the acoustic signals returned by the microphones. Comparisons are made between these setups and a free-field reference case. Normal impedance testing on various combinations of sand, plywood, and ground board material was also completed.

Bipolar battery construction

A lightweight, bipolar battery construction for lead acid batteries in which a plurality of thin, rigid, biplates each comprise a graphite fiber thermoplastic composition in conductive relation to lead stripes plated on opposite flat surfaces of the plates, and wherein a plurality of nonconductive thermoplastic separator plates support resilient yieldable porous glass mats in which active material is carried, the biplates and separator plates with active material being contained and maintained in stacked assembly by axial compression of the stacked assembly.
