Acceleration of auroral electrons in parallel electric fields

Rocket observations of auroral electrons are compared with the predictions of a number of theoretical acceleration mechanisms that involve an electric field parallel to the earth's magnetic field. The theoretical models are discussed in terms of required plasma sources, the location of the acceleration region, and properties of necessary wave-particle scattering mechanisms. We have been unable to find any steady state scatter-free electric field configuration that predicts electron flux distributions in agreement with the observations. The addition of a fluctuating electric field or wave-particle scattering several thousand kilometers above the rocket can modify the theoretical flux distributions so that they agree with measurements. The presence of very narrow energy peaks in the flux contours implies a characteristic temperature of several tens of electron volts or less for the source of field-aligned auroral electrons and a temperature of several hundred electron volts or less for the relatively isotropic 'monoenergetic' auroral electrons. The temperature of the field-aligned electrons is more representative of the magnetosheath or possibly the ionosphere as a source region than of the plasma sheet.

Description and operating performance of a parallel-rail electric-arc system with helium driver gas for the Langley 6-inch expansion tube

A parallel-rail arc-discharge system to heat and pressurize the initial helium driver gas of the Langley 6-inch expansion tube is described. This system was designed for a 2.44-m-long driver vessel rated at 138 MPa, with a distance between rails of 20.3 cm. Electric energy was obtained from a capacitor storage system rated at 12,000 V with a maximum energy of 5 MJ. Tests were performed over a range of energy from 1.74 MJ to the maximum value. The operating experience and system performance are discussed, along with results from a limited number of expansion-tube tests with air and carbon dioxide as test gases.

Structure of a quasi-parallel, quasi-laminar bow shock

A thick, quasi-parallel bow shock structure was observed with field and particle detectors of both HEOS 1 and OGO 5. The typical magnetic pulsation structure was at least 1 to 2 earth radii thick radially and was accompanied by irregular but distinct plasma distributions characteristic of neither the solar wind nor the magnetosheath. Waves constituting the large pulsations were polarized principally in the plane of the nominal shock, therefore also in the plane perpendicular to the average interplanetary field. A separate interpulsation regime detected between bursts of large amplitude oscillations was similar to the upstream wave region magnetically, but was characterized by disturbed plasma flux and enhanced noise around the ion plasma frequency. The shock structure appeared to be largely of an oblique, whistler type, probably complicated by counterstreaming high energy protons. Evidence for firehose instability-based structure was weak at best and probably negative.

Analysis of dynamic inlet distortion applied to a parallel compressor model

An investigation of surge was conducted by using a parallel compressor model of the J85-13 compressor implement on an analog computer. Surges were initiated by various types of dynamic disturbances in inlet pressure. The compressor model was less sensitive to disturbances of short duration, high frequency, and long duration where the compressor discharge pressure could react. Adding steady distortion to dynamic disturbances reduced the amount of dynamic disturbance required to effect surge. Steady and unsteady distortions combined linearly to reduce surge margin.

Phase substitution of spare converter for a failed one of parallel phase staggered converters

Failure detection and substitution of a spare module is provided in a system having a plurality of phase staggered modules connected in parallel to deliver regulated voltage from an unregulated source. Phase control signals applied to the active converter modules are applied to the spare module through NOR gates associated with and disabled by the power output of respective modules such that failure of any one enables its phase control signal to be applied to the spare module, thus controlling the spare module to operate in the phase position of the failed module. A NAND gate detects when any one active module fails and enables a gate in the spare module, thus activating the spare module.

Influence of heat transfer on the stability of parallel flow between concentric cylinders

The stability of the parallel flow of water between concentric cylinders at different temperatures is investigated for infinitesimal velocity and pressure disturbances. Primary interest is in the effect of heat transfer and the radius ratio a/b on the critical point of the neutral stability curve. The results indicate a strong dependence of the critical eigenvalues on both the heat transfer and the radius ratio. The critical Reynolds number of the nonisothermal flow appears to approach a finite value as the inner radius approaches zero (pipe flow) by showing an inflection point on the curve of critical Reynolds number vs a/b.

Effects of inviscid parallel shear flows on steady and unsteady aerodynamics and flutter

A general theory of planar disturbances in inviscid parallel shear flows, analogous to thin-wing theory in potential flows, has been developed. Integral relations between surface pressure and deformation are obtained which are similar to, and can be solved by the same numerical methods as, those of potential flow. Computed results are shown which illustrate the effects of a model turbulent boundary layer on various lifting and nonlifting surfaces, including an elastic panel in low supersonic flow and an airfoil control surface in subsonic flow.

Structure of a quasi-parallel, quasi-laminar bow shock

A thick quasi-parallel bow shock structure was observed on February 14, 1969, with field and particle detectors of both Heos 1 and Ogo 5. The typical magnetic pulsation structure was at least 1-2 R-E thick radially and was accompanied by irregular but distinct (average) plasma distributions characteristic of neither the solar wind nor the magnetosheath. There appeared to be a separate 'interpulsation' regime occurring between bursts of large amplitude oscillations. This regime was magnetically similar to the upstream wave region but was characterized by disturbed plasma flux and enhanced noise around the ion plasma frequency. The shock structure appeared to be largely of an oblique whistler type, probably complicated by counterstreaming high-energy protons.

Recent developments in parallel-grid, gas-scintillation proportional counters

The problems of developing large-area, gas-scintillation proportional counters with high resolution are considered. It is found that simple large-area, parallel-grid proportional counters suffer from a variation in gain over the counter window. Some success has been achieved in overcoming this problem by focusing the charge cloud as it drifts into the multiplication region. Measurements are reported for various mixtures of argon and xenon as well as pure xenon.

On high-latitude convection field inhomogeneities, parallel electric fields and inverted-V precipitation events

A simple model of a static electric field with a component parallel to the magnetic field is proposed for calculating the electric field and current distributions at various altitudes when the horizontal distribution of the convection electric field is given at a certain altitude above the auroral ionosphere. The model is shown to be compatible with satellite observations of inverted-V electron precipitation structures and associated irregularities in the convection electric field.

The signature of parallel electric fields in a collisionless plasma

The presence of a parallel electric field in the magnetosphere should be apparent through its effect on particles. An analysis is made of particle trajectories in phase space for a steady state collisionless plasma. The analysis utilizes the concepts of distribution function, total energy, and magnetic moment because all three quantities are conserved in a steady state situation in the absence of collisions. Two methods are presented for using particle data to gain information on the potential distribution. The first method involves the use of measurements of both ion and electron distribution functions and invokes the principle of quasi-neutrality. The second method involves the observation of discontinuities in velocity space which can be interpreted in terms of the effect of the electric field on the apparent loss or source cone.

A single user efficiency measure for evaluation of parallel or pipeline computer architectures

A precise statement of the relationship between sequential computation at one rate, parallel or pipeline computation at a much higher rate, the data movement rate between levels of memory, the fraction of inherently sequential operations or data that must be processed sequentially, the fraction of data to be moved that cannot be overlapped with computation, and the relative computational complexity of the algorithms for the two processes, scalar and vector, was developed. The relationship should be applied to the multirate processes that obtain in the employment of various new or proposed computer architectures for computational aerodynamics. The relationship, an efficiency measure that the single user of the computer system perceives, argues strongly in favor of separating scalar and vector processes, sometimes referred to as loosely coupled processes, to achieve optimum use of hardware.

F100(3) parallel compressor computer code and user's manual

The Pratt & Whitney Aircraft multiple segment parallel compressor model has been modified to include the influence of variable compressor vane geometry on the sensitivity to circumferential flow distortion. Further, performance characteristics of the F100 (3) compression system have been incorporated into the model on a blade row basis. In this modified form, the distortion's circumferential location is referenced relative to the variable vane controlling sensors of the F100 (3) engine so that the proper solution can be obtained regardless of distortion orientation. This feature is particularly important for the analysis of inlet temperature distortion. Compatibility with fixed geometry compressor applications has been maintained in the model.

Multiple scattering in reflection nebulae. I - A Monte Carlo approach. II - Uniform plane-parallel nebulae with foreground stars. III - Nebulae with embedded illuminating stars

A method for calculating the surface brightness distribution on a plane-parallel reflection nebula of uniform density illuminated by a star located either in front of, behind, or arbitrarily inside the scattering medium is proposed. The Monte Carlo technique is used to find solutions to the radiative transfer problem. The scattering properties of the nebular particles are parameterized by the albedo for single scattering and a three-parameter analytic phase function. Calculations are then presented for the surface brightness distribution across the face of such nebulae with (1) a foreground star and (2) immersed stars. The calculations include the full effects of multiple scattering, are independent of a particular assumed grain material or size distribution, and are applicable to any wavelength region for which observations can be obtained.

Parallel-burn options for dual-fuel single-stage orbital transports

A parallel-burn version of a single-stage vehicle for transport from the earth to low-earth orbit using two fuels and rocket propulsion is considered. New engine results were incorporated in vehicle performance and design studies. The results indicate that a hydrogen-cooled gas generator cycle engine provides attractive vehicle performance and that there is little incentive for increasing the chamber pressure beyond 27 MPa.

Electromagnetic pulse coupling through an aperture into a two-parallel-plate region

Analysis of electromagnetic-pulse (EMP) penetration via apertures into cavities is an important study in designing hardened systems. In this paper, an integral equation procedure is developed for determining the frequency and consequently the time behavior of the field inside a two-parallel-plate region excited through an aperture by an EMP. Some discussion of the numerical results is also included in the paper for completeness.
