Low Temperature Environment Operations of Turboengines (Design and User's Problems)

The author summarizes and links together a number of papers that were presented at the Propulsion and Energetics (PEP) symposium on low temperature environment operation of turbojet engines that was held October 8 to 12, 1990. Topics covered include operational experience of ice ingestion in the turboprop engine in the 2,000 hp class, icing on helicopter turbo engines, icing test facilities, ice relevant cloud physical parameters, and low temperature and fuel problems.

The Development of A Heated-Hybrid Generated Gas Pressurization System for Propellant Tanks

One of the most important considerations in the design of liquid fueled rockets is the method utilized to transfer the propellants from the propellant tanks to the rocket engine. Use of storable liquid propellant propulsion systems, particularly those employing hydrazine as a fuel, facilitates the attractive possibility of employing the monopropellant virtues of the fuel in order to generate gases for pressurization of the propellant tanks.

NASA battery testbed: A designed experiment for the optimization of LEO battery operational parameters

Simulation of spacecraft battery operation is implemented. Robust design experiment to obtain optimum battery operational parameters is performed. It is found that short term tests using robust design of experiments can provide guidelines for optimum battery operation. It is decided to use robust design approach to provide guidelines for battery operation on current spacecraft in orbit as batteries age (GRO, UARS, EUVE, TOPEX).

Spray Forming of NiTi and NiTiPd Shape-Memory Alloys

In the work to be presented, vacuum plasma spray forming has been used as a process to deposit and consolidate prealloyed NiTi and NiTiPd powders into near net shape actuators. Testing showed that excellent shape memory behavior could be developed in the deposited materials and the investigation proved that VPS forming could be a means to directly form a wide range of shape memory alloy components. The results of DSC characterization and actual actuation test results will be presented demonstrating the behavior of a Nitinol 55 alloy and a higher transition temperature NiTiPd alloy in the form of torque tube actuators that could be used in aircraft and aerospace controls.

Unraveling the Complex History of Aqueous Alteration and Metamorphism in CV Chondrite, Camel Donga 040

Camel Donga (CD) 040 is a CV breccia collected from Australia in 1988. Initial studies of CD 040 revealed two lithologies, both containing chondrules up to 1 mm in diameter (some with fine-grained rims) and abundant troilite, but each with remarkably different olivine compositions. Lithology 1 was characterized as petrologic type 3 material, while lithology 2 was described as being “heated to ~1100°C”. CD 040 was initially classified as an ungrouped C3; however, subsequent analyses of oxygen isotopes and bulk rock compositions confirmed that both lithologies were CV chondrite material. Though CD 040 was one of the earliest examples of a CV chondrite containing metamorphosed material, it was never extensively studied. Here we report the results of a detailed study of CD 040, focusing primarily on the petrography and mineral chemistry of metamorphosed lithology.

Heat Capacity and Thermal Relaxation of Bulk Helium Very Near the Lambda Point

In October 1992 a low temperature experiment was flown on the Space Shuttle in low Earth orbit. The objective of the mission was to measure the heat capacity and thermal conductivity of helium very close to the lambda point with the smearing effect of gravity removed. We report preliminary results from the experiment, and compare them with related measurements performed on the ground. The sample was s sphere of helium 3.5 cm in diameter contained within a copper calorimeter of vey high thermal conductivity. The calorimeter was attached to a pair of high resolution paramagnetic salt thermometers with noise levels in the 10 -10 K range and suspended from a high stability thermal isolation system. During the mission we found that the resolution of the thermometers was degraded somewhat due to the impact of charged particles. This effect limited the useful resolution of the measurements to about two nanokelvins from the lambda point. The results reported here are limited to about ten nanokelvins from the transition.

Battery Cell Balancing System and Method

A battery cell balancing system is operable to utilize a relatively small number of transformers interconnected with a battery having a plurality of battery cells to selectively charge the battery cells. Windings of the transformers are simultaneously driven with a plurality of waveforms whereupon selected battery cells or groups of cells are selected and charged. A transformer drive circuit is operable to selectively vary the waveforms to thereby vary a weighted voltage associated with each of the battery cells.
