Precipitation Hardenable High Temperature Shape Memory Alloy

A composition of the invention is a high temperature shape memory alloy having high work output, and is made from (Ni+Pt+Y) x Ti (100-x) wherein x is present in a total amount of 49-55 atomic % Pt is present in a total amount of 10-30 atomic %, Y is one or more of Au, Pd. and Cu and is present in a total amount of 0 to 10 atomic %. The alloy has a matrix phase wherein the total concentration of Ni, Pt, and the one or more of Pd. Au, and Cu is greater than 50 atomic %.

Fifth International Microgravity Combustion Workshop

On behalf of the NASA Headquarters Microgravity Research Division and the Microgravity Combustion Science Discipline Working Group, we are pleased to present these proceedings of the Fifth International Microgravity Combustion Workshop. At the time we go to press we expect to welcome to the workshop over 250 presenters and participants from U.S. academia, industry, and government; and from at least 8 international partner countries. We come together for this workshop at the beginning of the International Space Station era, where the future of microgravity combustion science programs will unfold over the next few years. As we accelerate our preparations for the ISS, this book and the growing literature base cited herein provide a summary of the accomplishments of approximately forty space-flight experiment-missions (plus nearly countless drop tests and aircraft parabolas) and a valuable resource for the new experiment ideas of the future.

Magellan battery operations: An overview

The Magellan Spacecraft's mission to map Venus's surface provides a unique application for Nickel-Cadmium batteries. An overview of the spacecraft, power subsystem, battery, and mission requirements are presented. The reliability and performance of the batteries were extensively studied with a comprehensive test and analysis program. Actual data for cruise and a limited number of mapping orbits is also presented.

Surface Tension Driven Convection Experiment (STDCE)

Results are reported of the Surface Tension Driven Convection Experiment (STDCE) aboard the USML-1 (first United States Microgravity Laboratory) Spacelab which was launched on June 25, 1992. In the experiment 10 cSt silicone oil was placed in an open circular container which was 10 cm wide by 5 cm deep. The fluid was heated either by a cylindrical heater (1.11 cm dia.) located along the container centerline or by a CO 2 laser beam to induce thermocapillary flow. The flow field was studied by flow visualization. Several thermistor probes were placed in the fluid to measure the temperature distribution. The temperature distribution along the liquid free surface was measured by an infrared imager. Tests were conducted over a range of heating powers, laser beam diameters, and free surface shapes. In conjunction with the experiments an extensive numerical modeling of the flow was conducted. In this paper some results of the velocity and temperature measurements with flat and curved free surfaces are presented and they are shown to agree well with the numerical predictions.

Research on the radiation-resistant n-p solar cell, thin-film solar cells, and rechargeable batteries is outlined. The development of Snap-8 is also discussed.
