Tracing Phase Transformation and Lattice Evolution in a TRIP Sheet Steel under High-Temperature Annealing by Real-Time In Situ Neutron Diffraction

Real-time in situ neutron diffraction was used to characterize the crystal structure evolution in a transformation-induced plasticity (TRIP) sheet steel during annealing up to 1000 °C and then cooling to 60 °C. Based on the results of full-pattern Rietveld refinement, critical temperature regions were determined in which the transformations of retained austenite to ferrite and ferrite to high-temperature austenite during heating and the transformation of austenite to ferrite during cooling occurred, respectively. The phase-specific lattice variation with temperature was further analyzed to comprehensively understand the role of carbon diffusion in accordance with phase transformation, which also shed light on the determination of internal stress in retained austenite. These results prove the technique of real-time in situ neutron diffraction as a powerful tool for heat treatment design of novel metallic materials.

Robust Biaxial Anisotropy and Switchable Néel Vectors in LaFeO 3 Epitaxial Films

Antiferromagnets with highly stable but switchable Néel vectors are desired for antiferromagnetic spintronics with ultrafast speed and terahertz frequencies. Electrical switching of antiferromagnetic insulators has been demonstrated using binary antiferromagnets, while large families of complex antiferromagnets such as perovskites are largely unexplored. Here, we show that epitaxial LaFeO 3 thin films on SrTiO 3 (001) exhibit clear, robust biaxial anisotropy with a spin-flop field of a few tesla. Angular-dependent spin-Hall magnetoresistance (SMR) characterizations of Pt/LaFeO 3 bilayers with the current channel along SrTiO 3 [100] and [110] reveal distinct, intriguing shapes and field dependence. Simulations using a macrospin model accurately describe the main behavior and fine features of the SMR data from which key antiferromagnetic parameters are extracted. Furthermore, remanent SMR measurement confirms the high fidelity of the Néel vector along either easy axis of the biaxial anisotropy, indicating that epitaxial films of LaFeO 3 and potentially other perovskite antiferromagnets offer an attractive platform for antiferromagnetic spintronics.

Four Years of Type Ia Supernovae Observed by TESS: Early-time Light-curve Shapes and Constraints on Companion Interaction Models

Abstract We present 307 type Ia supernova (SN) light curves from the first 4 yr of the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite mission. We use this sample to characterize the shapes of the early-time light curves, measure the rise times from first light to peak, and search for companion star interactions. Using simulations, we show that light curves must have noise <10% of the peak flux to avoid biases in the early-time light-curve shape, restricting our quantitative analysis to 74 light curves. We find that the mean power-law index t β 1 of the early-time light curves isβ 1 = 1.93 ± 0.57, and the mean rise time to peak is 15.7 ± 3.5 days. The underlying population distribution forβ 1 may instead consist of a Gaussian component with mean 2.29, width 0.34, and a long tail extending to values less than 1.0. We find that the data can rarely distinguish between models with and without companion interaction models. Nevertheless, we find three high-quality light curves that tentatively prefer the addition of a companion interaction model, but the statistical evidence for the companion interactions is not robust. We also find two SNe that disfavor the addition of a companion interaction model to a curved power-law model. Taking the 74 SNe together, we calculate 3σupper limits on the presence of companion signatures to control for orientation effects that can hide companions in individual light curves. Our results rule out common progenitor systems with companions having Roche lobe radii >31R ⊙ (separations >5.7 × 10 12 cm, 99.9% confidence level) and disfavor companions having Roche lobe radii >10R ⊙ (separations >1.9 × 10 12 cm, 95% confidence level). Lastly, we discuss the implications of our results for the intrinsic fraction of single degenerate progenitor systems.

Alumina–Titania Nanolaminate Condensers for Hot Programmable Catalysis

Nanolaminates composed of thin alternating layers of Al2O 3 and TiO 2 (ATO) were engineered by using atomic layer deposition as the dielectric material for a Pt-on-carbon catalytic condenser. Investigation assessed synthesis parameters including the deposition temperature, Al 2 O 3 and TiO 2 layer thicknesses, total number of layers, and a capping Al 2 O 3 layer on the maximum charge accumulation in the Pt catalyst. The highest capacitance ATO configuration demonstrated a specific capacitance of ∼1200 nF/cm 2 with working voltages of ±5 V, enabling the storage of 4 × 10 13 electrons or holes per cm 2 at room temperature. The ATO devices exhibited enhanced capacitance at elevated temperatures of up to 400 °C, suggesting the suitability of these materials for high-temperature applications. Adsorption of carbon monoxide on the Pt/C-ATO device characterized by grazing incidence infrared spectroscopy showed changes in the surface binding energy of 13.1 ± 0.8 kJ/mol for an applied external voltage bias of ±1 V.

Nature of the diffuse emission sources in the H i supershell in the galaxy IC 1613

ABSTRACT We present a study of the nearby low-metallicity dwarf galaxy IC 1613, focusing on the search for massive stars and related feedback processes, as well as for faint supernova remnants (SNR) in late stages of evolution. We obtained the deepest images of IC 1613 in the narrow-band H α, He ii and [S ii] emission lines and new long-slit spectroscopy observations using several facilities (6-m BTA, 2.5m SAI MSU, and 150RTT telescopes), in combination with the multiwavelength archival data from MUSE/VLT, VLA, XMM–Newton, and Swift/XRT. Our deep narrow-band photometry identifies several faint shells in the galaxy, and we further investigate their physical characteristics with the new long-slit spectroscopy observations and the archival multiwavelength data. Based on energy balance calculations and assumptions about their possible nature, we propose that one of the shells is a possible remnant of a supernova explosion. We study five out of eight Wolf–Rayet (WR) star candidates previously published for this galaxy using the He ii emission line mapping, MUSE/VLT archival spectra, and new long-slit spectra. Our analysis discards the considered WR candidates and finds no new ones. We found P Cyg profiles in H α line in two stars, which we classify as Luminous Blue Variable (LBV) star candidates. Overall, the galaxy IC 1613 may have a lower rate of WR star formation than previously suggested.

Enhanced Catalytic Dechlorination of Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) and H2 Production Enabled by Synergistic Gaδ+/Ga0 Active Sites in Liquid Metal Particles

Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is ubiquitous yet challenging to recycle due to its tendency to thermally decompose above 250 °C, releasing toxic, corrosive chlorinated compounds, and its inability to melt. Here, we report a catalytic strategy for PVC upcycling at 160 °C using gallium liquid metal particles (Ga-LMP) featuring a dynamic Ga-GaOOH core–shell architecture. These catalysts enable concurrent dechlorination and hydrogen evolution, yielding up to 7% H2 (based on initial hydrogen atoms in PVC) along with a highly dechlorinated (>95%) carbonaceous solid and aqueous HCl. Mechanistic investigations combining X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy, solid-state NMR, inelastic neutron scattering, and ab initio molecular dynamics reveal a synergistic interplay between Gaδ+ sites in the GaOOH shell and metallic Ga0 in the core. Cationic Ga initiates C–Cl bond activation and HCl formation, while progressive reduction of the shell exposes Ga0 sites that promote C–H activation and H2 evolution. Control experiments with a Ga salt and bulk Ga liquid metal confirmed that neither oxidation state alone can achieve both transformations efficiently. This work establishes a dynamic dual-site paradigm for liquid metal catalysis, in which the in situ evolution and coexistence of oxidized and metallic species enable sequential and cooperative bond activation pathways. These findings provide a general design principle for novel liquid metal catalysts that target challenging polymer transformations under mild conditions.

Method and apparatus for providing thermal wear leveling

Exemplary embodiments provide thermal wear spreading among a plurality of thermal die regions in an integrated circuit or among dies by using die region wear-out data that represents a cumulative amount of time each of a number of thermal die regions in one or more dies has spent at a particular temperature level. In one example, die region wear-out data is stored in persistent memory and is accrued over a life of each respective thermal region so that a long term monitoring of temperature levels in the various die regions is used to spread thermal wear among the thermal die regions. In one example, spreading thermal wear is done by controlling task execution such as thread execution among one or more processing cores, dies and/or data access operations for a memory.

Digital Twin Based Condition Monitoring of LCC-LCC Inductive Power Transfer Systems

Inductive power transfer (IPT) systems provide a flexible, hands-free charging opportunity to electric vehicles (EV). The resonant network components and the transmitter and receiver coils are often subjected to high voltages or currents. Component aging in the compensation network and coils of resonant IPT systems is detrimental to the reliability and power transfer efficiency of the IPT system. Monitoring the component health of such multi-element complex systems requires robust optimization algorithms. This paper discusses condition monitoring of a resonant IPT system for an EV charger using a digital twin model. A hybrid estimation algorithm based on genetic algorithms and adaptive particle swarm optimization is developed to estimate the parameters of the digital twin model. Simulation results are used to verify the monitoring capabilities of the developed algorithm under various operating conditions of the IPT system.

Cr plasma-material-interaction in PISCES-RF: D thermal release, retention, and erosion

Pure chromium (Cr) targets were exposed to high-flux deuterium (D) plasmas in the Pisces-RF linear plasma device, and measurements of D retention, release, and erosion were subsequently performed. Post-exposure D retention was quantified using temperature-programmed desorption on Cr targets irradiated by 50 eV ions over a broad range of exposure temperatures (423–873 K) and ion fluences (3 × 10 24 – 3 × 10 26 m −2 ). The retained D inventory was observed to decrease rapidly with increased exposure temperature, from approximately ∼7 × 10 20 m −2 at ∼ 420 K, to then saturate near ∼ 10 20 m −2 for exposure temperatures above ∼550 K. Separately, at fixed exposure temperature (∼450 K), D retention was found to have only a weak dependence on increasing ion fluence. Lastly, the erosion of Cr in D plasma was investigated for ion impact energies in the range 40 ≤ E i ≤ 250 eV. Erosion was inferred using optical emission spectroscopy (OES) from the ratio of emission lines (Cr I (425.4 nm)/D I (656.1 nm)) measured close to the target. Conversion of the OES yield data to net erosion yield was made with singular ion energy target mass-loss measurements. These net erosion yield data were then further corrected to obtain gross erosion yield by accounting for a re-deposition factor, computed using a simple model. The gross erosion yield is found to be 2–4 times lower than predicted by SDTrimSP, consistent with that typically observed for light-ion sputtering under high-flux plasma conditions.

Glauber’s Salt Composites for HVAC Applications: A Study on the Use of the T-History Method with a Modified Data Evaluation Methodology

Phase change materials (PCMs) can be utilized in buildings for peak load shifting in air conditioning systems, and the use of salt hydrate-based PCMs can reduce the cost of thermal energy storage devices. Glauber’s salt is an economical salt hydrate PCM with a melting point of around 32 °C. However, the desired melting range typically falls between 18 and 22 °C for building air conditioning applications. Although many researchers have characterized Glauber’s salt and its composites with modified melting points, enthalpy–temperature curves for composites of Glauber’s salt and NaCl are unavailable. In this study, we report the melting and solidification enthalpy–temperature curves for two different composites of Glauber’s salt and NaCl with a melting point of 21 °C obtained by the T-history method. Both composites contain NaCl to suppress the melting point, borax to reduce supercooling, and sodium polyacrylate as a thickener to enhance cyclic stability. The first composite with 12 wt.% NaCl demonstrated 139 kJ·kg−1 of latent heat of fusion, and the second composite with 9 wt.% NaCl demonstrated 171 kJ·kg−1. Both the composites have high volumetric energy densities compared to their organic counterparts with similar melting points.

Mild-Annealed Molecular Layer Deposition (MLD) Tincone Thin Film as Photoelectrochemically Stable and Efficient Electron Transport Layer for Si Photocathodes

Metalcone thin films, composed of inorganic–organic hybrids, are synthesized using molecular layer deposition (MLD) through reactions between organometallic precursors (e.g., Sn, Al, and Ti) and organic reactants (e.g., ethylene glycol and glycerol). Despite their unique properties, metalcones exhibit significant vulnerability to water due to their organic components, limiting their potential in electrochemical applications. This study focuses on enhancing the photoelectrochemical stability of tincone thin films in aqueous electrolyte while preserving their hybrid characteristics through mild annealing in air at 250 °C. As-deposited and vacuum-annealed tincone thin films exhibited significant degradation under these conditions, while high-temperature-annealed (500 °C) tincone thin films offered improved stability with a significant decline in charge transfer efficiency. In contrast, mild annealing in air maintained the C–O bond at half level and improved the stability and charge transport without compromising the unique characteristics of tincone. This was confirmed by ellipsometry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Mild-annealed tincone deposited on a lightly doped p-type silicon (p-Si) photocathode produced a 20-fold increase in CO volume compared to high-temperature annealed tincone in a CO 2 -saturated potassium bicarbonate (KHCO 3 ) electrolyte with dispersed graphene oxide–cobalt phthalocyanine (GO-CoPc) under 1 sun illumination at 0.9 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE), while maintaining the faradaic efficiency for CO and H 2 . These results suggest that mild-annealed tincone thin films hold significant potential as protective charge transport layers on silicon photocathodes for the aqueous CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR).

Dynamic Diketoenamine Crosslinking Unlocks Vinyl Polymer Vitrimers From β ‐Triketone Chemistry

Covalent adaptable networks (CANs) offer a compelling strategy to unite the mechanical robustness of thermosets with the reprocessability of thermoplastics, yet achieving simultaneous durability, processability, and true recyclability remains challenging. We introduce diketoenamine (DKE) vitrimers derived from β-triketone methacrylate monomers and demonstrate how rational monomer design dictates network processability, viscoelasticity, and recyclability. By systematically varying the spacer length between the β-triketone (TK) moiety and the polymer backbone, we identify a key structure–property relationship that dictates vitrimer behavior. Networks bearing TK pendants minimally displaced from the backbone suppress creep but exhibit limited stress relaxation, whereas extended spacers yield lower glass transition temperatures, higher effective crosslink densities, and efficient stress dissipation, enabling optical transparency and reprocessability. Extending this platform to ultra-high molecular-weight prepolymers introduces physical entanglements as secondary crosslinks, further enhancing dimensional stability without compromising processability. Both mechanical and chemical recycling validate the closed-loop circularity of these materials. Furthermore, these results establish TK methacrylates as a versatile platform for designing high-performance vitrimers that integrate durability, reprocessability, and true closed-loop recyclability.

Techno-Economic Evaluation of a 600MW Pumped Storage Hydropower Plant using the Pumped Storage Hydropower Valuation Tool

This paper presents a techno-economic evaluation of the proposed 600 MW, 8-hour Craig – Hayden pumped storage hydropower project using the U.S. Department of Energy’s Pumped Storage Hydropower Valuation Tool. The analysis integrates plant technical characteristics, regional grid conditions, and market-based operating assumptions to quantify stacked value streams from energy arbitrage, capacity, ancillary services, transmission congestion relief, and reliability. Both price taker and price influencer frameworks are applied to examine the impact of market participation and system interactions on lifecycle economic performance using Benefit - Cost Analysis and Multi - Criteria Decision Analysis. The results show that the price taker approach provides higher revenue estimates based on exogenous price signals, while the price influencer approach captures production cost savings, renewable curtailment reduction, and market price formation, yielding more conservative but system-representative outcomes. The study demonstrates the strategic value of long-duration PSH for enhancing operational flexibility, resource adequacy, and grid reliability in a high-renewable Western Interconnection.

Fabrication of Large-Area Metal-on-Carbon Catalytic Condensers for Programmable Catalysis

Catalytic condensers stabilize charge on either side of a high-k dielectric film to modulate the electronic states of a catalytic layer for the electronic control of surface reactions. Here, carbon sputtering provided for fast, large-scale fabrication of metal–carbon catalytic condensers required for industrial application. Carbon films were sputtered on HfO 2 dielectric/p-type Si with different thicknesses (1, 3, 6, and 10 nm), and the enhancement of conductance and capacitance of carbon films was observed upon increasing the carbon thickness following thermal treatment at 400 °C. After Pt deposition on the carbon films, the Pt catalytic condenser exhibited a high capacitance of ∼210 nF/cm 2 that was maintained at a frequency ∼1000 Hz, satisfying the requirement for a dynamic catalyst to implement catalytic resonance. Temperature-programmed desorption of carbon monoxide yielded CO desorption peaks that shifted in temperature with the varying potential applied to the condenser (−6 or +6 V), indicating a shift in the binding energy of carbon monoxide on the Pt condenser surface. A substantial increase in capacitance (∼2000 nF/cm 2 ) of the Pt-on-carbon devices was observed at elevated temperatures of 400 °C that can modulate ∼10% of charge per metal atom when 10 V potential was applied. A large catalytic condenser of 42 cm 2 area Pt/C/HfO 2 /Si exhibited a high capacitance of 9393 nF with a low leakage current/capacitive current ratio (<0.1), demonstrating the practicality and versatility of the facile, large-scale fabrication method for metal–carbon catalytic condensers.

Unravelling ultralow thermal conductivity in perovskite Cs2AgBiBr6: dominant wave-like phonon tunnelling and strong anharmonicity

Abstract Understanding the lattice dynamics and heat transport physics in the lead-free halide double perovskites remains an outstanding challenge due to their lattice dynamical instability and strong anharmonicity. In this work, we investigate the microscopic mechanisms of anharmonic lattice dynamics and thermal transport in lead-free halide double perovskite Cs 2 AgBiBr 6 from first principles. We combine self-consistent phonon calculations with bubble diagram correction and a unified theory of lattice thermal transport that considers both the particle-like phonon propagation and wave-like tunnelling of phonons. An ultra-low thermal conductivity at room temperature (~0.21 Wm −1 K −1 ) is predicted with weak temperature dependence( ~ T −0.34 ), in sharp contrast to the conventional ~T −1 dependence. Particularly, the vibrational properties of Cs 2 AgBiBr 6 are featured by strong anharmonicity and wave-like tunnelling of phonons. Anharmonic phonon renormalization from both the cubic and quartic anharmonicities are found essential in precisely predicting the phase transition temperature in Cs 2 AgBiBr 6 while the negative phonon energy shifts induced by cubic anharmonicity has a significant influence on particle-like phonon propagation. Further, the contribution of the wave-like tunnelling to the total thermal conductivity surpasses that of the particle-like propagation above around 310 K, indicating the breakdown of the phonon gas picture conventionally used in the Peierls-Boltzmann Transport Equation. Importantly, further including four-phonon scatterings is required in achieving the dominance of wave-like tunnelling, as compared to the dominant particle-like propagation channel when considering only three-phonon scatterings. Our work highlights the importance of lattice anharmonicity and wave-like tunnelling of phonons in the thermal transport in lead-free halide double perovskites.

Electron temperature relations and the direct N, O, Ne, S, and Ar abundances of 49 959 star-forming galaxies in DESI data release 2

We present the largest direct-method abundance catalogue of galaxies to date, containing measurements of 49 959 star-forming galaxies at z<0.96 from DESI (Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument) data release 2. By directly measuring electron temperatures across multiple ionization zones, we provide constraints on a number of electron temperature relations. Using the temperature measurements, we derive reliable abundances for N, O, Ne, S, and Ar, and measure the evolution of abundances and abundance ratios of as a function of metallicity and other galaxy properties. Our measurements include direct oxygen abundances for 49 507 galaxies, leading to the discovery of the two most metal-poor galaxies in the nearby Universe, with oxygen abundances of 12+log⁡(O/H)=6.77−0.03+0.03 dex (1.2 per cent Z⊙) and 12+log⁡(O/H)=6.81−0.04+0.04 dex (1.3 per cent Z⊙). We identify a rare outlier population of 24 galaxies with high-N/O ratios at low metallicity, reminiscent of galaxy abundances observed in the early Universe. We find the Ne/O ratio is constant at low metallicity but increases gradually at 12+log(O/H)>8.105±0.004 dex. We show that the S/O and Ar/O abundance ratios are strongly correlated, consistent with the expected additional Type Ia enrichment channel for S and Ar. In this work, we present an initial survey of the key properties of the sample, with this data set serving as a foundation for extensive future work on galaxy abundances at low redshift.

Fingerprinting Superconductors by Disentangling Andreev and Quasiparticle Currents Across Tunable Tunnel Junctions

Tunneling Andreev reflection (TAR) spectroscopy provides a new approach to identify superconducting pairing symmetry at the atomic scale. Using atomistic superconducting transport simulations, we reveal the mechanism by which TAR can distinguish between pairing symmetries, which is complementary to traditional conductance-based techniques. In particular, owing to the additivity of the excess tunneling decay rate, the TAR spectrum is a weighted average of the contributions from quasiparticle currents, Andreev reflection, and higher-order scattering processes, and their relative weights depend on both the superconducting order parameter and the coupling strength. Within the local tunneling model, TAR dominates mid-gap conductance for s-wave superconductors, is suppressed for d-wave, and coexists with quasiparticle tunneling in sign-changing symmetries if the expectation value for the superconducting gap remains finite. Meanwhile, higher-order processes generally enhance the TAR signal when GN exceeds approximately 0.1G0. As a result, TAR provides a rich spectral fingerprint of the underlying pairing symmetry and electronic structure, enabling atomically resolved identification of unconventional superconducting states.
