Mechanism of parallel electric fields inferred from observations

Data from various experiments of the Atmosphere Explorer satellites are analyzed to test their consistency with the model of single-particle linear acceleration through a static parallel potential drop. Theoretical current/voltage and energy flux/voltage relations are applied to the data to predict the densities of source current carriers above the acceleration region for upward Birkeland currents. Comparison of these model predictions with simultaneous electron data indicates that the observed field-aligned potential drops are consistent with direct acceleration in the absence of anomalous resistivity.

Parallel processing implementations of a contextual classifier for multispectral remote sensing data

The applicability of parallel processing schemes to the implementation of a contextual classification algorithm which exploits the spatial and spectral context of a multispectral remote sensing pixel to achieve classification is examined. Two algorithms for classifying each multivariate pixel taking into account the probable classifications of neighboring pixels are presented which make use of a size three horizontally linear neighborhood, and the serial computational complexity of the more efficient algorithm is shown to grow in proportion to the number of pixels and the cube of the number of possible categories. The implementation of the more efficient algorithm on a CDC Flexible Processor system and on a multimicroprocessor system such as the proposed PASM is then discussed. It is noted that the use of N processors to perform the calculations N times faster than a single processor overcomes the principal disadvantage of contexual classifiers, i.e., their computational complexity.

Inventory estimation on the massively parallel processor

This paper describes algorithms for efficiently computing inventory estimates from satellite based images. The algorithms incorporate a one dimensional feature extraction which optimizes the pairwise sum of Fisher distances. Biases are eliminated with a premultiplication by the inverse of the analytically derived error matrix. The technique is demonstrated with a numerical example using statistics obtained from an actual Landsat scene. Attention was given to implementation of the Massively Parallel processor (MPP). A timing analysis demonstrates that the inventory estimation can be performed an order of magnitude faster on the MPP than on a conventional serial machine.

Instabilities of low frequency, parallel propagating electromagnetic waves in the earth's foreshock region

An instability analysis is presented for parallel and antiparallel propagating electromagnetic waves generated by reflected and diffuse suprathermal ions upstream of the earth's bow shock. Calculations are performed on the basis of upstream particle observations made by the ISEE 1 Quadrispheric Lepedea instrument and low-energy electron measurements made by the ISEE 1 electron spectrometer for a single period. The electromagnetic dispersion relation is computed and the unstable modes and growth times of the fastest growing waves are determined. It is found that the reflected ions destabilize the plasma most strongly at a wave frequency 0.1 that of the ion gyrofrequency by a resonant ion beam instability for waves propagating upstream and by a nonresonant firehose-like instability for waves propagating downstream. The diffuse ions also destabilize the plasma most strongly at the same frequency by means of resonant instabilities of both right- and left-hand polarized waves propagating away from the bow shock.

Venus nightside ionospheric holes - The signatures of parallel electric field acceleration regions

Attention is given to the existence of 'holes', that is, regions of density depletion in the nightside Venus ionosphere associated with regions of radial magnetic fields. The properties of the electrons within the core of these holes are thought to suggest an acceleration process along the magnetic field lines, a process also suggested by the Venera 9 and 10 observations of energetic ions in the Venus tail. On the basis of the observational information, these Venusian plasma depletions are attributed to the presence of parallel electric fields similar to those observed in the terrestrial auroral ionosphere. The resulting electric field accelerates electrons down the field lines, heating the depleted thermal electron population within the hole and producing ionization below the hole. At the same time, ionospheric ions are accelerated outward toward the plasmasheet.

Design and performance of resonant-cavity parallel baffles for duct silencing

Resonant-cavity parallel baffles, either empty or with a thin absorbent lining, have been investigated as an alternative to fiberglass-filled baffles commonly used to control noise emission from large ducts. A method for predicting silencer attenuation is described, and it is shown that the new type of baffle is characterized by an acoustic performance similar to that of fibrous baffles, while being virtually immune to such problems as clogging, erosion, or settling. The emphasis of the study is on insertion loss measurements in a 7 by 10 ft wind tunnel.

Numerical techniques in radiative heat transfer for general, scattering, plane-parallel media

The study of radiative heat transfer with scattering usually leads to the solution of singular Fredholm integral equations. The present paper presents an accurate and efficient numerical method to solve certain integral equations that govern radiative equilibrium problems in plane-parallel geometry for both grey and nongrey, anisotropically scattering media. In particular, the nongrey problem is represented by a spectral integral of a system of nonlinear integral equations in space, which has not been solved previously. The numerical technique is constructed to handle this unique nongrey governing equation as well as the difficulties caused by singular kernels. Example problems are solved and the method's accuracy and computational speed are analyzed.

Numerical investigation of supersonic base flow with parallel injection

The present investigation represents the first detailed numerical calculations of base flow with gas injection using a geometry and primary flow condition germane to a scramjet combustor. The investigation is concerned with the numerical solution of the complete two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations for the flowfield in the vicinity of the base with parallel gas injection, taking into account the fluid dynamic aspects of this flowfield. The flow is dominated by separation, and by mixed regions of locally subsonic and supersonic flow. A comparison is conducted of flows with and without injection, and the effect of base injection on the wave patterns and shear layers of such flows is clearly established.

Parallel processing implementations of a contextual classifier for multispectral remote sensing data

Contextual classifiers are being developed as a method to exploit the spatial/spectral context of a pixel to achieve accurate classification. Classification algorithms such as the contextual classifier typically require large amounts of computation time. One way to reduce the execution time of these tasks is through the use of parallelism. The applicability of the CDC flexible processor system and of a proposed multimicroprocessor system (PASM) for implementing contextual classifiers is examined.

A new strategy for efficient solar energy conversion: Parallel-processing with surface plasmons

This paper introduces an advanced concept for direct conversion of sunlight to electricity, which aims at high efficiency by tailoring the conversion process to separate energy bands within the broad solar spectrum. The objective is to obtain a high level of spectrum-splitting without sequential losses or unique materials for each frequency band. In this concept, sunlight excites a spectrum of surface plasma waves which are processed in parallel on the same metal film. The surface plasmons transport energy to an array of metal-barrier-semiconductor diodes, where energy is extracted by inelastic tunneling. Diodes are tuned to different frequency bands by selecting the operating voltage and geometry, but all diodes share the same materials.

Linearized potential solution for an airfoil in nonuniform parallel streams

A small perturbation potential flow theory is applied to the problem of determining the chordwise pressure distribution, lift and pitching moment of a thin airfoil in the middle of five parallel streams. This theory is then extended to the case of an undisturbed stream having a given smooth velocity profile. Two typical examples are considered and the results obtained are compared with available solutions of Euler's equations. The agreement between these two results is not quite satisfactory. Possible reasons for the differences are indicated.

Survey of new vector computers: The CRAY 1S from CRAY research; the CYBER 205 from CDC and the parallel computer from ICL - architecture and programming

Problems which can arise with vector and parallel computers are discussed in a user oriented context. Emphasis is placed on the algorithms used and the programming techniques adopted. Three recently developed supercomputers are examined and typical application examples are given in CRAY FORTRAN, CYBER 205 FORTRAN and DAP (distributed array processor) FORTRAN. The systems performance is compared. The addition of parts of two N x N arrays is considered. The influence of the architecture on the algorithms and programming language is demonstrated. Numerical analysis of magnetohydrodynamic differential equations by an explicit difference method is illustrated, showing very good results for all three systems. The prognosis for supercomputer development is assessed.
