A Graph-Net with Node Embeddings to Detect False Data Injection Attacks in Photovoltaic Systems

Distributed energy resources (DER) contribute to the operational stability of the larger power grid both at utility-scale as well as commercial and residential scales in aggregated forms. These DER in-turn are susceptible to increasing cyber threats. An adversary can plug into the same local network that a field photovoltaic (PV) system uses to interconnect its data loggers and inverters and manipulate certain measurements collected from the network or trick existing irradiance and inverter readings through false data injection attacks (FDIA). Control routines that rely on these measurements can propagate the false data, impacting critical decisions that result in a suboptimal operation or even cause intentional harm leading to inverter-tripping or unscheduled loads that need to be shed. To detect FDIA in PV systems, the paper introduces an attention-based graph neural network with node embeddings and applied it to a simple prototypical DC-coupled microgrid with PV, energy storage, and load. The algorithm shows a detection accuracy of up to 98.95%. The proposed FDIA detection technique will provide micro-grid operators with an effective method to safeguard their systems, guaranteeing the secure and reliable operation.

Erratum to: Measurements of higher-order cumulants of multiplicity and net-electric charge distributions in inelastic proton-proton interactions by NA61/SHINE

This Erratum replaces, due to a discovery of coding mistakes, the following quantities: κ 3 /κ 1 of the h + − h − distribution presented in Fig. 6 and Table 6, κ 4 listed in Table 4, and $\hat{C}$ 4 presented in Fig. 7 and Table 5. All mentioned figures and tables were updated.

High-Energy Particle Collision Data Analysis

Network performance analysis for HPC datacenters (net_perf) v1.0

The software has two main features: (1) identify data movement trends in HPC data centers that use network flow monitoring (2) analyze the performance of individual data flows under the existing data movement management strategy and identify performance bottlenecks that impede timely data availability for science workflows. Its main advantage is that it is tailored for HPC network traffic by considering HPC data movement management intricacies.

Life-Cycle Analysis of Residential Windows Retrofits: Net GHG Emission Reduction and Payback Periods

Windows are a critical envelope component that plays an important role in the overall performance and environmental impact of a building life cycle. These implications can be embedded in the window lifecycle related to its design, manufacturing, raw materials and transportation, performance during the building’s use (operational), replacements, maintenance and end-of-life. Windows may impact 25% of the heating and cooling energy use, 10% of total building energy use and 45% of the envelope heat transfer (Harris 2022). The impacts of windows on the energy consumption of buildings have been extensively discussed, however, its embodied life-cycle impacts, such as greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and the trade-offs between the embodied and its operational emissions are less explored. Understanding the life cycle impacts of windows may subsidize decision making process and inform the development of emerging windows technologies. BTO’s Windows Program has played an important role to increase the adoption of emerging technologies as high-performance windows in the U.S. (Harris 2022) and to consider the GHG emission impacts of the those windows is an important aspect that can support the strategic objectives and the performance targets from the national blueprint for decarbonizing the buildings sector and to reduce the on-site emissions and embodied life cycle emissions from building materials and construction (US DOE 2024).

Identifying Barriers to Solar and Storage Hybrids: Modeled vs. empirical wholesale market value and net-value for co-located solar + storage projects [Slides]

Large-scale (1MW+) co-located solar and battery storage projects are expanding rapidly in the United States, but their realized contribution to the bulk power system remains poorly understood because public project-level operating data are limited. The Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory estimates the wholesale market value of 280 operational photovoltaic-plus-storage (PV+S) projects across the seven ISOs/RTOs and 19 additional balancing authorities, representing roughly 95% of the U.S. PV+S fleet in 2024. We model optimized hourly dispatch under energy, capacity, and ancillary-service market opportunities and compare the resulting value with standalone PV value, project-specific levelized cost estimates, and empirical operating or revenue data where available.

Leveraging Solar Thermal Energy for Net-Zero Brewing

Firestone Walker Brewing Company (FWBC), Paso Robles, California, owns a 1-million-barrel (BBL) brewery that requires up to 5 MW of process heat in form of saturated steam. Firestone Walker Brewery has set a goal of reducing carbon emissions by 50% for our 1 million BBL brewery.

Towards Net-Zero: Nuclear-Assisted Waste Biomass to Liquid Fuel in Eastern Idaho

A nuclear assisted carbon negative hybrid energy process that enables production of synthetic bio-crude oil and biochar from Eastern Idaho waste biomass is proposed. The process integrates nuclear powered electricity with high temperature steam electrolysis and biomass hydropyrolysis. The bio-crude oil is of sufficient composition and blended with traditional crude oil at a refinery. Hydrogen from the electrolyzer is pressurized and inserted into the pyrolyzer. Non condensable gases generated in the hydropyrolysis process are burned with oxygen from the electrolyzer to produce heat for the electrolyzer, biomass dryer, and pyrolyzer. The biochar is returned to the soil via fertilizer application and remains there for thousands of years. Since the total process uses nuclear generated electricity, the carbon in the biochar is ultimately sequestered from the atmosphere, thus making the process carbon negative. Using Eastern Idaho wheat or barley straw, this hybrid energy process has the potential to provide an alternative petroleum source. Two options exist for the system design: 1) send electricity from the nuclear plant and straw to a chemical processing plant to produce the bio-crude and biochar, 2) construct the biomass processing facility near the nuclear plant to allow use of nuclear-generated process heat to drive the chemical. Process model description and results are discussed. The process is sized to produce gasoline and diesel at the rate that the INL uses every day for fleet usage.
