The 5-kW arcjet power electronics

The initial design and evaluation of a 5 kW arcjet power electronics breadboard which as been integrated with a modified 1 kW design laboratory arcjet is presented. A single stage, 5 kW full bridge, pulse width modulated (PWM), power converter was developed which was phase shift regulated. The converter used metal oxide semiconductor field effect transistor (MOSFET) power switches and incorporated current mode control and an integral arcjet pulse ignition circuit. The unoptimized power efficiency was 93.5 and 93.9 percent at 5 kW and 50A output at input voltages of 130 and 150V, respectively. Line and load current regulation at 50A output was within one percent. The converter provided up to 6.6 kW to the arcjet with simulated ammonia used as a propellant.

The long-period semi-detached giant binary system 5 Ceti

The binary system 5 Ceti consists of a K3 III star at or near its Roche lobe and a small hot companion best studied in the satellite ultraviolet. The hot radiation source at the secondary star is immersed in the chromosphere of the K giant, and the slight enhancements of a few UV absorption lines at secondary minimum are used to estimate chromospheric column densities. The variability and flatness of the spectrum is evidence for considering the object a main-sequence star accreting mass by way of Roche-lobe overflow at the rate of 5 X 10 to the minus 7 solar masses/yr. Thus 5 Ceti may represent the elusive rapid stage of mass transfer in which matter is lost from the shrinking Roche lobe of the more massive star. The Fe II UV spectrum in interacting binaries is also discussed.

5- to 13-micron airborne observations of Comet Wilson 1986l

Comet Wilson was observed from the Kuiper Airborne Observatory approximately 23.6 and 25.7 Apr. 1987, UT (approx. 3 to 5 days after perihelion) using the NASA-Ames Faint Object Grating Spectrometer. Spectrophotometric data were observed with a 21 inch aperture between 5 and 13 micrometer and with a spectral resolution of 50 to 100. Spectra of the inner coma and nucleus reveal a fairly smooth continuum with little evidence of silicate emission. The 5 to 8 micrometer color temperature of the comet was 300 + or - 15 K, approx. 15 percent higher than the equilibrium blackbody temperature. All three spectra of the nucleus show a new emission feature at approx. 12.25 micrometer approx. two channels (.22 micrometer) wide. Visual and photographic observations made during the time of these observations showed a broad faint, possible two component tail. No outburst activity was observed.

A new edition of the Mars 1:5,000,000 map series

A new edition of the Mars 1:5,000,000 scale map series is in preparation. Two sheets will be made for each quadrangle. Sheet one will show shaded relief, contours, and nomenclature. Sheet 2 will be a full-color photomosaic prepared on the Mars digital image model (MDIM) base co-registered with the Mars low-resolution color database. The latter will have an abbreviated graticule (latitude/longitude ticks only) and no other line overprint. The four major databases used to assemble this series are now virtually complete. These are: (1) Viking-revised shaded relief maps at 1:5,000,000 scale; (2) contour maps at 1:2,000,000 scale; (3) the Mars digital image model; and (4) a color image mosaic of Mars. Together, these databases form the most complete planetwide cartographic definition of Mars that can be compiled with existing data. The new edition will supersede the published Mars 1:5,000,000 scale maps, including the original shaded relief and topographic maps made primarily with Mariner 9 data and the Viking-revised shaded relief and controlled photomosaic series. Publication of the new series will begin in late 1991 or early 1992, and it should be completed in two years.

Kinetics of the template-directed oligomerization of guanosine 5'-phosphate-2-methylimidazolide: Effect of temperature on individual steps of reactionion

Non-enzymatic, template-directed reactions have been proposed as models for prebiological polynucleotide synthesis. Chemically activated mononucleotides react in the presence of a polynucleotide, acting as the template in a Watson-Crick base-pairing fashing, and form the complementary daughter polynucleotide. Phosphoimidazolide-activated nucleotides have been used successfully as substrates in these reactions. The kinetics of the guanosine 5'-monophosphate-2-methylimidazolide (2-MelmpG) reaction in aqueous pH 8.0 solutions in the presence and in the absence of polycytidylate (poly(C)) were studied, acting as the template at 6, 23, and 37 C. In the absence of the template, the major reaction pathway of 2-MelmpG is hydrolysis of the P-N bond to form the unreactive guanosine 5'-monophosphate (5'-GMP) and 2-methylimidazole. Concentrated solution of 2-MelmpG (greater than 0.02 M) in the absence of the template form only a small amount dinucleotide, (pG)2, but in the presence of poly(C), oligoguanylates, (pG)n with 2 less than or = n less than or = 40, can be detected. We were able to determine the rate constants for individual steps of this reaction. A summary of the conclusions is presented.

Unsteady separation in sharp fin-induced shock wave/turbulent boundary layer interaction at Mach 5

Fluctuating wall-pressure measurements are made in shock-wave/turbulent-boundary-layer interactions generated by sharp/unswept fins at angles of attack of 16, 18, 20, 22, 24, 26, and 28 degrees at Mach 5. The experiment was conducted under approximately adiabatic wall temperature conditions. The mean and rms pressure distributions can be collapsed in conical coordinates. The wall-pressure signal near separation is intermittent for all angles of attack (16-28 deg) and is qualitatively similar to that measured in unswept flows. However, the shock frequencies are higher - about 5 kHz compared to 0.5-1 kHz. Over the range of sweepbacks examined, from 25-55 deg, the spectral content of the fluctuating pressures does not change. Thus, the increase in separation-shock frequency from 1 to 5 kHz occurs at lower interaction sweepback and is not a continuous process with increasing sweepback. Power spectra at the position of maximum rms in the intermittent region for interactions in different incoming boundary layers have the same center frequency. The maximum rms in the intermittent region correlates with interaction sweepback, not with overall inviscid pressure rise.

Excitation of Pc 5 pulsations in the morning sector by a local injection of particles in the magnetosphere

A characteristic of Pc 5 pulsation in the morning sector is determined by use of ground magnetometer and riometer data, in conjunction with data acquired with satellites which include the magnetic fields above the ionosphere and electron fluxes at geosynchronous orbit. It is found that the onset of a flux increase in energetic electrons of 30 keV to 200 keV at geosynchronous orbit almost coincides with the onset of Pc 5 pulsation activity and riometer absorption on the ground. It is confirmed when the Pc 5 pulsation occurs on the ground, the large-scale Birkeland current system observed at ionospheric altitude splits into a number of small-scale Birkeland current pairs. It is inferred that the electron flux enhancement, presumably supplied from the tail plasma sheet associated with the substorm onset, provides stress to cause the background large-scale plasma vortex to split into the small-scale vortices. It is suggested that the field-aligned currents in the small-scale vortices propagate along the field lines and sustain the standing Alfvenic oscillations at several different, but neighboring shells of the field lines.

Loss of ring current O(+) ions due to interaction with Pc 5 waves

A test particle code is used here to investigate ring current ion interaction with Pc 5 waves, combined with convection and corotation electric fields, with emphasis on the loss of O(+) ions over the dayside magnetosphere. A new loss mechanism for the O(+) ions due to the combined effects of convection and corotation electric fields and interactions with Pc 5 waves via a magnetic drift-bound resonance is presented. For given fields, whether a particle gains or losses energy depends on its initial kinetic energy, pitch angle at the equatorial plane, and the position of its guiding center with respect to the azimuthal phase of the wave. The ring current O(+) ions show a dispersion in energies and L values with decreasing local time across the dayside, and a bulk shift to lower energies and higher L values. Due to interaction with the Pc 5 waves, the particle's kinetic energy can drop below that required to overcome the convection potential and the particle is lost to the dayside magnetopause by a sunward E x B drift.

Oligomerization reactions of ribonucleotides - The reaction of the 5'-phosphorimidazolide of adenosine with diadenosine pyrophosphate on montmorillonite and other minerals

The overall regiospecificity of the 3',5'-phosphodiester bond formation is shown to be increased from 64 to 83 percent when a 9:1 ratio of ImpA to A5'ppA instead of ImpA alone is reacted in the presence of Na(+)-montmorillonite. The major factor in the regiospecificity increase is the formation of 3',5'-linked A5'ppA3'pA and A5'pp-A3'pA3'pA. The results obtained show that ImpA reacts more readily with A5'ppA than it does with another ImpA molecule and that A5'ppA plays a central role in directing the formation of 3',5'-phosphodiester bonds.

Pressure and frictional resistance of a cylinder at Reynolds numbers 5,000 to 40,000

This report presents the results of a series of free-jet measurements to determine the pure frictional resistance of a cylinder from the difference between total resistance and pressure at Reynolds Numbers 5,000 to 40,700. The skin friction is 5 percent of the total resistance at Re = 5,000, and had dropped to 2 percent at Re = 40,000, which supports Thom's theory.

Effect of leaving group on the oligomerization of 5'-AMP on montmorillonite

The oligomerization of imidazole derivative of 5'-AMP (ImpA) in the presence of montmorillonite clay yields oligomers containing up to 10 monomer units. In these reactions, the heterocyclic base, imidazole is the leaving group. In our present study, we synthesized a series of activated nucleotides of 5'AMP using other leaving groups such as pyrazole, 1,2,4-triazole, piperidine, morpholine, 4-aminopyridine, 4-methylaminopyridine, 4-dimethylaminopyridine, 2-aminobenzimidazole etc. to determine the effect of amine leaving group on the products of the oligomerization reaction. Earlier results from our laboratory showed that the presence AppA in the clay reaction of ImpA enhances the oligomerization reaction to yield higher oligomers. We also studied the effect of AppA in the clay mediated oligomerization reaction of the activated nucleotides. Oligomerization of 2-amino-benzimidazole derivative of 5'-AMP gave higher oligomers containing up to nine monomer units in the presence of AppA.

In vitro evolution of a ribozyme that contains 5-bromouridine

The Tetrahymena group I ribozyme was modified by replacing all 99 component uridine residues with 5-bromouridine. This resulted in a 13-fold reduction in catalytic efficiency in the RNA-catalyzed phosphoester-transfer reaction compared to the behavior of the unmodified ribozyme. A population of 10(13) variant ribozymes was constructed, each containing 5-bromouridine in place of uridine. Five successive 'generations' of in vitro evolution were carried out, selecting for improved phosphoester transferase activity. The evolved molecules exhibited a 27-fold increase in catalytic efficiency compared to the wild-type bromouridine-containing ribozyme, even exceeding that of the wild-type ribozyme in the non-brominated form. Three specific mutations were found to be responsible for this altered behavior. These mutations enhanced activity in the context of 5-bromouridine, but were detrimental in the context of unmodified uridine. The evolved RNAs not only tolerated but came to exploit the presence of the nucleotide analogue in carrying out their catalytic function.

Infrared laser spectroscopy of jet-cooled carbon clusters: the nu 5 band of linear C9

The nu 5 antisymmetric stretching vibration of 1 sigma+g C9 has been observed using direct infrared diode laser absorption spectroscopy of a pulsed supersonic cluster beam. Twenty-eight rovibrational transitions measured in the region of 2079-2081 cm-1 were assigned to this band. A combined least squares fit of these transitions with previously reported nu 6 transitions yielded the following molecular constants for the nu 5 band: nu 0 = 2 079.673 58(17) cm-1, B"= 0.014 321 4(10) cm-1, and B'=0.014 288 9(10) cm-1. The IR intensity of the nu 5 band relative to nu 6 was found to be 0.108 +/- 0.006. Theoretical predictions for the relative intensities vary widely depending upon the level of theory employed, and the experimental value reported here is in reasonable agreement only with the result obtained from the most sophisticated ab initio calculation considered (CCSD).

Effect of phosphate activating group on oligonucleotide formation on montmorillonite: the regioselective formation of 3',5'-linked oligoadenylates

The effects of amine structure on the montmorillonite-catalyzed oligomerization of the 5'-phosphoramidates of adenosine are investigated. 4-Aminopyridine derivatives yielded oligoadenylates as long as dodecamers with a regioselectivity for 3',5'-phosphodiester bond formation averaging 88%. Linear and cyclic oligomers are obtained and no A5'ppA-containing products are detected. Oligomers as long as the hexanucleotide are obtained using 2-aminobenzimidazole as the activating group. A predominance of pA2'pA is detected in the dimer fraction along with cyclic 3',5'-trimer; no A5'ppA-containing oligomers were detected. Little or no oligomer formation was observed when morpholine, piperidine, pyrazole, 1,2,4-triazole, and 2-pyridone are used as phosphate-activating groups. The effects of the structure of the phosphate activating group on the oligomer structure and chain lengths are discussed.

N-Acetyl-D- and L-esters of 5'-AMP hydrolyze at different rates

Studies of the properties of aminoacyl derivatives of 5'-AMP are aimed at understanding the origin of the process of protein synthesis. Aminoacyl (2',3') esters of 5'-AMP can serve as models of the 3'-terminus of aminoacyl tRNA. We report here on the relative rates of hydrolysis of Ac-D- and L-Phe AMP esters as a function of pH. At all pHs above 3, the rate constant of hydrolysis of the Ac-L-Phe ester is 1.7 to 2.1 times that of Ac-D-Phe ester. The D-isomer seems partially protected from hydrolysis by a stronger association with the adenine ring of the 5'-AMP.

Synthesis, Characterization, and Optical Properties of a Cyano-Functionalized 4,5,9,10-tetraaryl-l,6-dioxapyrene

5,10-Di(4-cyanophenyl)-4,9-di(4-methylphenyl)-1,6-dioxapyrene ( CN-diox), a symmetrically substituted 4,5,9,10-tetraaryldioxapyrene, was synthesized in seven steps from 1,4-dihydroxynaphthalene. The synthetic methodology incorporated a base-catalyzed ring-closure process followed by dehydration to introduce the first tetraaryl- 1,6-dioxapyrene. Crystal structure and electrochemical analysis were performed to directly compare the properties of CN-diox to previously reported dioxapyrene derivatives, specifically 1,6-dioxapyrene (Diox) and 4,9-diethyl-2,7-dimethyl- 1,6-dioxapyrene (Alkyl-diox). Optical spectroscopy studies were performed to evaluate the potential of the 1,6-dioxapyrenes as fluorescent probes. CN-diox revealed a broad absorption centered near 450 nm (epsilon = 31,900/M/cm) in THF with a corresponding fluorescence at 619 nm (Phi(sub f) = 0.011). This was in sharp contrast to both Diox and Alkyl-diox which displayed broad absorption bands near 400 nm (epsilon approx. 5,000-10,000/M/cm) in THF with corresponding fluorescence near 500 nm (Phi(sub f) = 0.059 and 0.082 for Diox and Alkyl-diox, respectively). The luminescence of CN-diox was found to be solvatochromic (lambda(sub max) = 619 nm-644 nm) with single exponential lifetimes of less than 1.3 ns. Neither Diox nor Alkyl-diox showed solvatochromic properties.
