2023 University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez National Institute for Congestion Reduction Study

# 2023 University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez National Institute for Congestion Reduction Study The 2023 University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez National Institute for Congestion Reduction (NCIR) Study provided insight into the travel patterns and associated energy consumption of participants. Study results helped researchers identify opportunities for the development of policies that could incentivize the use of alternative modes of travel such as transit and micromobility. Such travel modes reduce congestion by reducing the miles traveled by privately owned vehicles in urban and rural areas. The [National Institute for Congestion Reduction](https://nicr.usf.edu/) provides multimodal congestion reduction strategies through real-world deployments that leverage advances in technology, big data science, and innovative transportation options to optimize the efficiency and reliability of the transportation system for all users. ## Data Collection Agency The University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez conducted the study. ## Survey Methodology The study was conducted in Spanish. Data collection was enabled via the open-source [NREL OpenPATH platform](https://www.nrel.gov/transportation/openpath). The resulting dataset consists of partially automated travel diaries—combining sensed and surveyed data reflecting patterns of multimodal, end-to-end, individual human mobility—as well as demographic and socioeconomic information from the 17 participants. ## Survey Records, Data, and Documentation Study records include 17 participants. The total number of trips was 458 and total non-air-miles traveled was approximately 1,469.

Charged Microdroplets in Air: Characterization and Use in Surface Functionalization and Nanomaterials Preparation (Final Technical Report)

The major theme of this project is the exploration of ions and charged droplets in the open air. The specific goals are (1) focusing ions in the open air, (2) separating and measuring the sizes of charged droplets, (3) examining chemical reactions occurring within droplets, (4) examining chemical reactions occurring between charged droplets and chemical vapors, and (5) characterizing surfaces post droplet deposition. The analysis of ions in the open air greatly simplifies instrumentation as it removes the need for large, costly vacuum pumps. Major strides in this project include the sizing of electrospray droplets using structured illumination microscopy, 3D printed drift tube ion mobility (both standalone and coupled with mass spectrometry), and accelerated Suzuki reactions in Leidenfrost droplets.

Making Wireless Power Matter (CRADA Final Report)

The Resonant Link project team investigated the integration of their novel, self-resonant magnetic structure for electromagnetic coils into inductive wireless power transfer systems. Relative to conventional wireless power coils, their multi-layer self-resonant structure (the “MSRS”) reduces losses by up to 6x and lowers to BOM cost by up to 10x. These power-dense, cost-effective coils are a promising path towards the first value-add wireless power systems in a variety of applications, from phones to medical devices to kitchen appliances to mobile robots to electric vehicles. The researchers explored development of the power electronics for wireless power transfer systems using the multi-layer self-resonant structure (MSRS) concept that efficiently transmits power over air gaps for in-home applications, including through-wall power transfer, appliances built around the Ki and Qi standards, and other potential use cases This project specifically focused on the power electronics design, development, and testing for these applications. Resonant Link’s proprietary wireless power technology holds the promise of matching the performance of wired chargers in size and efficiency, especially when operated from a DC distribution grid.

Facilitated transport membrane with functionalized ionic liquid carriers for CO 2 /N 2 , CO 2 /O 2 , and CO 2 /air separations

CO 2 separations from cabin air and the atmospheric air are challenged by the very low partial pressures of CO 2 . In this study, a facilitated transport membrane (FTM) is developed to separate CO 2 from air using functionalized ionic liquid (IL) and poly(ionic liquid) (PIL) carriers. A highly permeable bicontinuous structured poly(ethersulfone)/poly(ethylene terephthalate) ( b PES/PET) substrate is used to support the PIL–IL impregnated graphene oxide thin film. The CO 2 separation performance was tested under a mixture feed of CO 2 /N 2 /O 2 /H 2 O. Under 410 ppm of CO 2 at 1 atm feed gas, CO 2 permanence of 3923 GPU, and CO 2 /N 2 and CO 2 /O 2 selectivities of 1200 and 300, respectively, are achieved with helium sweeping on the permeate side. For increased transmembrane pressure (>0 atm), a thicker PIL–IL/GO layer was shown to provide mechanical strength and prevent leaching of the mobile carrier. CO 2 binding to the carriers, ion diffusivities, and the glass transition temperature of the PIL–IL gels were examined to determine the membrane composition and rationalize the superior separation performance obtained. This report represents the first FTM study with PIL–IL carriers for CO 2 separation from air.

Probing electronic dead layers in homoepitaxial n-SrTiO 3 (001) films

We combine state-of-the-art oxide epitaxial growth by hybrid molecular beam epitaxy with transport, x-ray photoemission, and surface diffraction, along with classical and first-principles quantum mechanical modeling to investigate the nuances of insulating layer formation in otherwise high-mobility homoepitaxial n-SrTiO 3 (001) films. Our analysis points to charge immobilization at the buried n-SrTiO 3 /undoped SrTiO 3 (001) interface as well as within the surface contamination layer resulting from air exposure as the drivers of electronic dead-layer formation. As Fermi level equilibration occurs at the surface and the buried interface, charge trapping reduces the sheet carrier density (n 2D ) and renders the n-STO film insulating if n 2D falls below the critical value for the metal-to-insulator transition.

Coast-Urban-Rural Atmospheric Gradient Experiment

Accurately representing the climate and weather variability within cities and providing well-tested representations of the impacts of urban systems on the atmospheric environment are challenges for current earth system models (ESMs). Field data for testing and developing these models are critical to addressing these limitations. The Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) user facility will support a field campaign aimed at understanding how different surface-atmosphere interactions around a city are influencing its climate. The Coast-Urban-Rural Atmospheric Gradient Experiment (CoURAGE) is expected to operate from December 2024 to November 2025 in and around Baltimore, Maryland. With its aging infrastructure, growing susceptibility to heat and flooding, and ongoing issues with air and water pollution, Baltimore is characteristic of many large industrial cities in the Eastern United States. ARM, a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science user facility, plans to deploy one of its three mobile observatories at Morgan State University’s Clifton Park site in downtown Baltimore. Ancillary ARM sites are also planned for rural Maryland, northwest of the city; and to the southern end of Kent Island in Chesapeake Bay. Data from CoURAGE will complement measurements from the Baltimore Social-Environmental Collaborative (BSEC), one of four DOE Urban Integrated Field Laboratories that will operate in cities across the United States to study urban climate change.
