Air Traffic Management Technology Demonstration-1 Concept of Operations (ATD-1 ConOps)

The operational goal of the ATD-1 ConOps is to enable aircraft, using their onboard FMS capabilities, to fly Optimized Profile Descents (OPDs) from cruise to the runway threshold at a high-density airport, at a high throughput rate, using primarily speed control to maintain in-trail separation and the arrival schedule. The three technologies in the ATD-1 ConOps achieve this by calculating a precise arrival schedule, using controller decision support tools to provide terminal controllers with speeds for aircraft to fly to meet times at a particular meter points, and onboard software providing flight crews with speeds for the aircraft to fly to achieve a particular spacing behind preceding aircraft.

Autonomous Inspection of Electrical Transmission Structures with Airborne UV Sensors and Automated Air Traffic Management

This report details test and measurement flights to demonstrate autonomous UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) inspection of high-voltage electrical transmission structures. A UAV built with commercial, off-the-shelf hardware and software, supplemented with custom sensors and logging software, measured ultraviolet (UV) emissions from a test generator placed on a low-altitude substation and a medium-altitude switching tower. Since corona discharge precedes catastrophic electrical faults on high-voltage structures, detection and geolocation of ultraviolet emissions is needed to develop a UAV-based self-diagnosing power grid. Signal readings from an onboard ultraviolet sensor were validated during flight with a commercial corona camera. Geolocation was accomplished with onboard GPS; the UAV position was logged to a local ground station and transmitted in real time to a NASA server for tracking in the national airspace. The method has practicality and relevance but not adequacy; either improved UAV position determination technology or increased sensor range is needed to enable broad deployment of this method.

Air Traffic Management Technology Demonstration-1 (ATD-1) Avionics Phase 2 Flight Test Training for Interval Management

Prior to the successful flight test validation of a new avionics prototype, participants from Boeing, Honeywell, and United Airlines underwent group training at NASA Langley Research Center. New prototype software for an algorithm which enables greater efficiency in high-density airspace, called Interval Management, was to be incorporated into Electronic Flight Bags and placed in the cockpit for pilot usage. The goals of the training were to teach the flight test pilots how to operate the new software, establish techniques to simultaneously position three aircraft prior to each test scenario, and ensure a common communication protocol among team members when coordinating the position of aircraft for the next scenario. The multi-tiered interactive training regimen consisted of a process that continually built upon previous foundational material. The primary learning elements were 1) a portable computer-based trainer that was provided to the pilots prior to classroom training sessions, 2) classroom learning, 3) full mock-up simulator training, and 4) refresher training just prior to the flight test. Each part of the regimen was designed to repeat and build upon the previous element. The purpose of this Technical Memorandum is to inform the aviation industry how flight training for Interval Management was conducted at Langley Research Center in order to reduce overall development costs of future Interval Management training programs. Secondly, the paper provides insight regarding the decision-making process when attempting to conduct a flight test.

Conflict Resolution Strategies for Balloon-Airship Encounters in Upper Class E Air Traffic Management (ETM)

This paper examines strategic conflict resolution strategies for pair-wise high-altitude balloon, airship encounters. By strategic is meant that the conflict is identified (detected) at the time of flight plan submission or flight plan alteration through a service, such as an ETM Service Supplier (ESS). We investigate optimal control solutions for two classes of problems: non-cooperative, where the balloon must alter its ascent trajectory in order to avoid the airship and cooperative, where both vehicles make maneuvers through a negotiation protocol.

Future Airspace Operations: UTM-Inspired Air Traffic Management

We need to prepare airspace system to accommodate diversity, density and complexity of future operations. Current system will reach its peak due to use of old technology and human-in-the-loop nature to accommodate new entrants. Talk will focus on how an ATM system can be made ready to meet the future needs. Author will discuss a number of lessons based on Unmanned Aircraft System Traffic Management (UTM) could be leveraged to prepare for future.
