Prior to my internship, I was informed that a previous intern had built a tool to analyse MongoDB logs and look for invalid access attempts, which served as a great reference point for my project. I was initially tasked with expanding on her prototype and filling in the gaps such as integrating it with the main monitoring tool the lab uses. Eventually, the scope grew, expanding to support other databases and a growing collection of tools. I organized the framework around an observer pattern, meaning one point in the program sending updates to the rest of the framework. Every time a log was read and parsed, it was sent to be processed by the tools, using the type of event as a means to determine which tools should get a chance to act on the log. This decouples the tools from the log reader, making future updates and additions much easier. The framework processes MongoDB logs at ~135,000 entries per second and PostgreSQL logs at ~170,500 entries per second, accurately detecting anomalies such as slow queries and connections from unknown addresses. This framework serves to fill gaps in database monitoring tools currently implemented at the lab, such as tracking failed authentication for PostgreSQL and MongoDB which had very minimal or none before this framework. National labs such as Fermilab hold sensitive data and valuable computing resources, making them attractive targets. Monitoring intrusion attempts on databases is made much easier by this comprehensive monitoring suite.

Topic modeling is a crucial technique in natural language processing (NLP), enabling the extraction of latent themes from large text corpora. Traditional topic modeling, such as Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA), faces limitations in capturing the semantic relationships in the text document although it has been widely applied in text mining. BERTopic, created in 2022, leveraged advances in deep learning and can capture the contextual relationships between words. In this work, we integrated Artificial Intelligence (AI) modules to LDA and BERTopic and provided a comprehensive comparison on the analysis of prescription opioid-related cardiovascular risks in women. Opioid use can increase the risk of cardiovascular problems in women such as arrhythmia, hypotension etc. 1,837 abstracts were retrieved and downloaded from PubMed as of April 2024 using three Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) words: “opioid,” “cardiovascular,” and “women.” Machine Learning of Language Toolkit (MALLET) was employed for the implementation of LDA. BioBERT was used for document embedding in BERTopic. Eighteen was selected as the optimal topic number for MALLET and 23 for BERTopic. ChatGPT-4-Turbo was integrated to interpret and compare the results. The short descriptions created by ChatGPT for each topic from LDA and BERTopic were highly correlated, and the performance accuracies of LDA and BERTopic were similar as determined by expert manual reviews of the abstracts grouped by their predominant topics. The results of the t-SNE (t-distributed Stochastic Neighbor Embedding) plots showed that the clusters created from BERTopic were more compact and well-separated, representing improved coherence and distinctiveness between the topics. Our findings indicated that AI algorithms could augment both traditional and contemporary topic modeling techniques. In addition, BERTopic has the connection port for ChatGPT-4-Turbo or other large language models in its algorithm for automatic interpretation, while with LDA interpretation must be manually, and needs special procedures for data pre-processing and stop words exclusion. Therefore, while LDA remains valuable for large-scale text analysis with resource constraints, AI-assisted BERTopic offers significant advantages in providing the enhanced interpretability and the improved semantic coherence for extracting valuable insights from textual data.
This study demonstrates a failure identification methodology applied to a preprocessing facility generating conversion-ready feedstocks from biomass meeting conversion process critical quality attribute (CQA) specifications. Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) was used as an industrially relevant risk analysis approach to evaluate a logging residue preprocessing system to prepare feedstock for pyrolysis conversion. Risk evaluations considered both system-level and operation unit-level assessments considering process efficiency, product quality, cost, sustainability, and safety. Key outputs included estimations of semi-quantitative risk scores for each failure, identification of the failure impacts, identification of failure causes associated with material attributes and process parameters, ranking success rates of failure detection methods, and speculation of potential mitigation strategies for decreasing failure risk scores. Results showed that deviations from moisture specifications had cascading consequences for other CQAs along with process safety implications. Failures linked to fixed carbon specifications carried the highest risk scores for product quality and process efficiency impacts. As increased throughput can be inversely related to meeting product quality specifications; achieving throughput and other material-based CQAs simultaneously will likely require system optimization or prioritization based on system economics. Ultimately, this work successfully demonstrates FMEA as a risk analysis approach for other bioenergy process systems.
Due to a lower InN bandgap energy Eg~0.7 eV, InxGa1−xN/Sapphire epifilms are considered valuable in the development of low-dimensional heterostructure-based photonic devices. Adjusting the composition x and thickness d in epitaxially grown films has offered many possibilities of light emission across a wide spectral range, from ultraviolet through visible into near-infrared regions. Optical properties have played important roles in making semiconductor materials useful in electro-optic applications. Despite the efforts to grow InxGa1−xN/Sapphire samples, no x- and d-dependent optical studies exist for ultrathin films. Many researchers have used computationally intensive methods to study the electronic band structures Ejk→, and subsequently derive optical properties. By including inter-band transitions at critical points from Ejk→, we have developed a semiempirical approach to comprehend the optical characteristics of InN, GaN and InxGa1−xN. Refractive indices of InxGa1−xN and sapphire substrate are meticulously integrated into a transfer matrix method to simulate d- and x-dependent reflectivity RE and transmission TE spectra of nanostructured InxGa1−xN/Sapphire epifilms. Analyses of RE and TE have offered accurate x-dependent shifts of energy gaps for InxGa1−xN (x = 0.5, 0.7) in excellent agreement with the experimental data.

Coastal cities offer a unique environment for studying aerosol-cloud interactions and the effects of urban emissions on cloud properties. As part of the Eastern Pacific Cloud Aerosol Precipitation Experiment (EPCAPE), the Partitioning Thrust by Los Alamos National Laboratory (EPCAPE-PT-LANL) was conducted. Our campaign focused on measuring the optical and chemical properties of aerosols and their interactions within marine stratocumulus clouds in La Jolla, California. EPCAPE-PT-LANL enhances the primary goals of EPCAPE through innovative observations of vapor-phase transitions between aerosols and cloud droplets, the impact of black carbon on aerosol-cloud dynamics, and the effects of cloud processing on aerosol optical properties.
