Computer program for supersonic Kernel-function flutter analysis of thin lifting surfaces

This report describes a computer program (program D2180) that has been prepared to implement the analysis described in (N71-10866) for calculating the aerodynamic forces on a class of harmonically oscillating planar lifting surfaces in supersonic potential flow. The planforms treated are the delta and modified-delta (arrowhead) planforms with subsonic leading and supersonic trailing edges, and (essentially) pointed tips. The resulting aerodynamic forces are applied in a Galerkin modal flutter analysis. The required input data are the flow and planform parameters including deflection-mode data, modal frequencies, and generalized masses.

The size and performance effects of high lift system technology on a modern twin engine jet transport

The energy and economic benefits of low-speed aerodynamic system technology applied to a modern 200-passenger, 2000-nmi range, twin engine jet transport are reviewed. Results of a new method to design flap systems at flight Reynolds number are summarized. The study contains the airplane high lift configuration drag characteristics and design selection charts showing the effect of flap technology on the airplane size and performance. The study areas include: wing and flap geometry, climb and descent speed schedules with partial flap deflection, flap system technology, and augmented stability. The results compare the improvements in payload from a hot, high elevation airport.

Calculation of helicopter airfoil characteristics for high tip-speed applications

In this paper, we have applied a new aerodynamic tool to the study of helicopter airfoil characteristics. We have shown that the computed airloads reproduce completely the experimental behavior of representative airfoils across the transonic regime. In addition, the computational details of the flow fields, the surface pressure distributions, and the viscous-layer characteristics enable us to trace the evolution of the physical changes that occur as m infinity or Re increases. Descriptions of the complicated development of shock waves, shock-induced separation supplement the information that has been obtained heretofore in wind tunnels. In validating our calculations and assessing the accuracy of the results, including extensive grid-refinement studies and comparisons with data from numerous wind tunnels, we have defined the capabilities and limitations of the code ARC2D more precisely. This important aspect of the investigations can complement wind-tunnel tests, by providing flow-field details that are difficult to measure and by extending the range of low parameters beyond the capabilities of existing wind tunnels. The code has now progressed from a purely research stage to almost a production stage, where it can be run by specialists in the helicopter industry.

Vortical flow analysis for F-106B configuration

The three-dimensional Euler aerodynamic method is applied to basic F-106B wing-fuselage geometries over an angle-of-attack range in the subsonic and transonic speeds to examine vortical flow behavior. The use of this method to provide meaningful vortex breakdown information is explored. This Euler solution algorithm uses a C-H mesh with 80625 grid points to represent the flowfield. Contours of axial velocity and total pressure, spanwise surface pressure and velocity vectors at cross flow planes, together with contours of suction pressure and total pressure on the leeward surface of the wing, were used to examine the vortex breakdown details.

Skin-friction measurements by laser interferometry

The measurement of skin friction in rapidly distorted compressible flows is difficult, and very few reliable techniques are available. A recent development, the laser interferometer skin friction (LISF) meter, promises to be useful for this purpose. This technique interferometrically measures the time rate of thinning of an oil film applied to an aerodynamic surface. Under the proper conditions the wall shear stress may thus be found directly, without reference to flow properties. The applicability of the LISF meter to supersonic boundary layers is examined experimentally. Its accuracy and repeatability are assessed, and conditions required for its successful application are considered.
