Energy-Energy Correlators for Precision QCD

In this contribution to the Proceedings of the US Community Study on the Future of Particle Physics (Snowmass 2021) we review recent progress in the evaluation and application of the Energy-Energy Correlator (EEC) event shape observable in $e^+e^⁻$ annihilation, hadronic collisions, and deep inelastic scattering. The importance of EEC as a precision probe of the perturbative and non perturbative aspects of QCD dynamics is emphasized. It can be used to extract the strong coupling constant and to constrain TMD distribution functions. Closely related energy-correlation shape variables have also been used to tag boosted objects produced in high energy collisions. The opportunities to study EEC at the future Electron-Ion Collider are also highlighted.

SBN-BD: O(10 GeV) Proton Beam Dump at Fermilab’s PIP-II Linac

Proton beam dumps are prolific sources of mesons enabling a powerful technique to search for vector mediator coupling of dark matter to neutral pion and higher mass meson decays. By the end of the decade the PIP-II linac will be delivering up to 1 MW of proton power to the FNAL campus. This includes a significant increase of power to the Booster Neutrino Beamline (BNB) which delivers 8 GeV protons to the Short Baseline Neutrino (SBN) detectors. By building a new dedicated beam dump target station, and using the SBN detectors, a greater than an order of magnitude increase in search sensitivity for dark matter relative to the recent MiniBooNE beam dump search can be achieved. This modest cost upgrade to the BNB would begin testing models of the highly motivated relic density limit predictions and provide novel ways to test explanations of the anomalous excess of low energy events seen by MiniBooNE.

A cross-frontier quest to reveal the origin of the Universe

We still don't know much about our Universe. Various fundamental symmetry tests to reveal the origin of the Universe include: multi-species EDM searches, Lepton Flavor Violation, CPV/LNV/LFV searches at colliders, and Lepton Number Violation.

TPOT Support Structure Finite Element Analysis

This paper is a discussion of the results of finite element analysis (FEA) of the TPOT detector support frame. The analysis of the complete support frame is discussed in section 5. Earlier sections are used to verify assumptions in the model. The maximum deflection of the full support frame is 20.04mm if pinned boundary conditions are assumed at each end of the 80/20 beams. The maximum deflection of the support frame is 7.09mm assuming fixed connections at the ends of the 80/20 beams.

Measurement of neutral current single π 0 production on argon with the MicroBooNE detector

We report the first measurement of π 0 production in neutral current (NC) interactions on argon with average neutrino energy of ≲1 GeV. We use data from the MicroBooNE detector’s 85-tonne active volume liquid argon time projection chamber situated in Fermilab’s Booster Neutrino Beam and exposed to 5.89 × 10 20 protons on target for this measurement. Measurements of NC π 0 events are reported for two exclusive event topologies without charged pions. Those include a topology with two photons from the decay of the π 0 and one proton and a topology with two photons and zero protons. Flux-averaged cross-sections for each exclusive topology and for their semi-inclusive combination are extracted (efficiency-correcting for two-plus proton final states), and the results are compared to predictions from the GENIE, NEUT, and NUWRO neutrino event generators. We measure cross sections of 1.243 ± 0.185 (syst) ±0.076 (stat), 0.444 ± 0.098 ± 0.047, and 0.624 ± 0.131 ± 0.075 [10 -38 cm 2 /Ar] for the semi-inclusive NCπ 0 , exclusive NCπ 0 +1p, and exclusive NCπ 0 +0p processes, respectively.

LEU Fission Plate: Experimental Prototype Design Document

The Ultracold Neutron (UCN) source at LANSCE is currently the source of the highest density of UCN in the world. We intend to use innovative new solutions to boost our UCN density in order to maintain our leadership in this competitive field. Prior studies suggest that a fission plate neutron multiplier made from low enriched uranium (LEU) installed between our spallation target and UCN source moderator can boost the density by up to a factor of ten. Here we present a prototype of this idea that uses an existing one liter volume of LEU that can boost the UCN density by roughly a factor of 2. Additional simulation studies presented here also suggest that we may find more gains by replacing some of the moderator or reflector geometries with beryllium.

Calibration of the ProtoDUNE Horizontal-Drift position reconstruction using a laser system

Forthcoming in the next decade of neutrino physics advancements is the construction of the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE), a long baseline neutrino oscillation experiment which has the potential to answer fundamental questions such as why there is more matter than antimatter in the universe, and ultimately why we exist at all. A prototype of this experiment, ProtoDUNE, sits in a charged particle test beam at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) and uses Liquid Argon time projection chambers to image interactions of these particles. ProtoDUNE Single-Phase (ProtoDUNESP) had positively charged hadrons as well as positrons in its initial 2018 beam data run. Because ProtoDUNE is a surface-based time projection chamber, it experiences a constant influx of cosmic rays. These cosmic rays ionize the liquid argon within the detector, resulting in an accumulation of slow moving positive ions towards the cathode. This local charge distribution results in electric field non uniformities, which can have a significant effect on the accuracy of the event reconstruction. This paper outlines a monte carlo simulation study which adapts methodology from the MicroBooNE experiment, another neutrino oscillation experiment, to derive electric field correction maps which can correct for distortions of the electric field within the detector. These correction maps accurately estimate the electric field throughout the detector volume and correct for uncertainties in reconstructed event data enabling for physics discoveries.

Exploring Dark Sector Physics in MicroBooNE with e+e- Final States

Neutrinos are the second most abundant massive particle in the universe, but because of their small mass and weak interactions with matter, they are still not well understood. Due to their pervasive nature and unique properties, neutrinos make great probes to explore fundamental questions about the universe such as what is the composition of dark matter? The MiniBooNE experiment, designed to study neutrino oscillations, detected what has become a longstanding anomaly – an excess of low energy electromagnetic events from accelerator neutrino interactions. A possible explanation of the anomaly comes from neutrino interactions with nuclei that create heavier, sterile neutrinos that will decay quickly into electron-positron pairs. Complementing this is the MicroBooNE experiment, a liquid argon time projection chamber, that can reconstruct events well in both two and three dimensions and can distinguish electrons from photons. This reconstruction ability enables us to select dark sector neutrino interactions from other possible interactions using machine learning techniques such as graph neural networks (GNNs) which is the primary focus of this project.
