The Luna 16 automatic station returned from the Sea of Fertility a 35 cm long column of lunar surface material. 1 g of the Luna 16 lunar surface material, taken at a depth of 22 cm, consists of fine material: surface material and fine fragments of rocks from 1 to 4 mm in diameter. Analyses made on 17 mg of the fine lunar surface material are presented. The results obtained for the Luna 16 surface material are plotted on the diagram of the isotopic evolution of strontium and show that this surface material is most depleted of radiogenic Sr-87 of all the known lunar surface materials and that the point characterizing Lunar 16 lies somewhat to the right of the line corresponding to an age of 4.6 billion years.
A high-explosive shaped charge vaporizing a hollow conical liner of Ba metal and producing a fast field-aligned jet of plasma was detonated at high altitude, during a quiescent phase of a magnetic storm initiated by an ssc 10 hrs prior to the experiment, in an attempt to trace out and observe the dynamics of an auroral field line in the magnetosphere. Observations offer evidence for an upward Birkeland current sheet at the poleward edge of the auroral spiral of 8 x 10 to the minus second power A/m. Unusual features of the substorm leave open the possibility that the plasma injection may have triggered it.
The hook method is used to measure the absolute gf values of the following lines: the first 13 members of the principal series, the ground-level transition at 2275.46 A, and the intercombination line at 6572.78 A in Ca I; the first 22 members of the principal series, the ground-level transitions at 2428.1 and 2680.08 A, and the intercombination line at 6892.6 A in Sr I; and the members from principal quantum numbers 12 to 21, inclusive, as well as the ground-level transitions at 2432.5, 2444.6, and 2454.06 A in Ba I. The results are compared with those of previous measurements, and the quantum-defect method is applied to plot the oscillator strengths of the discrete transitions in the principal series of Mg I, Ca I, and Sr I in order to obtain estimates of the photoionization cross sections at the first ionization limit. The resulting cross sections are found to be about twice as large as previous values based on vapor-pressure data.
The discovery of Ba and Nd isotopic anomalies in two inclusions from the Allende meteorite is reported. The inclusions are Ca-Al-rich objects typical of the type considered as high-temperature condensation products in the solar nebula and contain distinctive Mg and O isotopic anomalies of the FUN (mass Fractionation, Unknown Nuclear processes) type. Mass-spectrometry results are discussed which show that inclusion C1 has anomalies in Ba at masses 134 and 136, while inclusion EK1-4-1 exhibits large marked negative anomalies at 130, 132, 134, and 136, as well as a positive anomaly at 137. It is also found that inclusion EK1-4-1 shows marked negative anomalies in Nd at masses 142, 146, 148, and 150, in addition to a positive anomaly at 145. These isotopic shifts are attributed to addition of r-process nuclei rather than mass fractionation. It is suggested that an onion-shell supernova explosion followed by injection into the solar nebula is the most likely generic model that may explain the observations.
Inelastic and superelastic scattering of 30- and 100-eV electrons by laser-excited 6s 6p 1P and subsequent cascade-populated 6s 6p 3P, 6s 5d 1D, and 6s 5d 3D Ba atoms have been observed. Absolute differential cross sections for the singlet and relative scattering intensities for the triplet species have been determined in the 5 to 20 deg angular region. Under the present conditions excitations dominate over deexcitations.
In contrast to higher plants, Chara rhizoids contain statolith vacuoles filled with biocrystallites of BaS04 in the form of rods composed of globular subunits ca. 7 nm in diameter. The revelation of the crystallites under electron microscopy is dependent on the fixative; best structural preservation was observed after fixation in a buffered glutaraldehyde + acrolein solution; 0s04 and KMnO4 partially dissolved both the biocrystallites and synthetic BaS04.

A reliable payload system and scaled down shaped charges were developed for carrying out experiments in solar-terrestrial magnetospheric physics. Four Nike-Tomahawk flights with apogees near 450 km were conducted to investigate magnetospheric electric fields, and two Taurus-Tomahawk rockets were flown in experiments on the auroral acceleration process in discrete auroras. In addition, a radial shaped charge was designed for plasma perturbation experiments.
The basic mechanism associated with the photovoltaic phenomena observed in the R.F. sputtered BaTiO3/silicon system is presented. Series of measurements of short circuit photocurrents and open circuit photovoltage were made. The composition depth profiles and the interface characteristics of the BaTiO3/silicon system were investigated for a better understanding of the electronic properties. A Scanning Auger Microprobe combined with ion in depth profiling were used.
An investigation of the crystallization behavior of a Zr-Ba-La-Al-F glass which is subjected to isothermal heat treatments is presented. The number and nature of the crystalline phases which form and their nucleation sites are determined at three temperatures. Also, the growth rate and volume fraction of crystals which nucleate internally in the glass, when heated at 320 C, are determined as a function of time.

In the present paper, the observation of a white dwarf companion of the mild Ba star Xi-1 Ceti (= 65 Ceti = HR 649 = HD 13611) is reported, taking into account also the properties of the mild Ba star and of its companion. The UV spectrum of Xi-1 Ceti is discussed along with an interpretation of this spectrum. Attention is given to the effective temperature of the companion, the absorption bands in the spectrum, the radius and mass of the Xi-1 Ceti companion, and questions regarding the obscuration of the companion by the atmosphere of the Ba star. It is found that the overall energy distribution of the Xi-1 Ceti companion can best be matched with a 14,000 K DA white dwarf of log g = 8 or less. However, the absolute intensity is too small and would require a radius too small and a mass too large for such a gravity.
