Feed system design for a reduced pressure tank

Three designs were considered to satisfy the design objective. These designs were the current design, a Land Based Pressurized Feed System, and a fuel recirculation system. A computer code was developed to analyze the current feed system and assist in the analysis of the two experimental systems. After comparing the three concepts, the land Based Pressurized Feed System seemed to be the most promising new development. This design coupled with the piping configuration described in the report provides a justifiable fuel feed system which satisfies all the necessary requirements.

Methods and Systems for Configuring Sensor Acquisition Based on Pressure Steps

Technologies are provided for underwater measurements. A system includes an underwater vessels including: a plurality of sensors disposed thereon for measuring underwater properties; and a programmable controller configured to selectively activate the plurality of sensors based at least in part on underwater pressure. A user may program at what pressure ranges certain sensors are activated to measure selected properties, and may also program the ascent/descent rate of the underwater vessel, which is correlated with the underwater pressure.

CFD flowfield simulation of Delta Launch Vehicles in a power-on configuration

This paper summarizes recent work at McDonnell Douglas Aerospace (MDA) to develop and validate computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulations of under expanded rocket plume external flowfields for multibody expendable launch vehicles (ELVs). Multi engine reacting gas flowfield predictions of ELV base pressures are needed to define vehicle base drag and base heating rates for sizing external nozzle and base region insulation thicknesses. Previous ELV design programs used expensive multibody power-on wind tunnel tests that employed chamber/nozzle injected high pressure cold or hot-air. Base heating and pressure measurements were belatedly made during the first flights of past ELV's to correct estimates from semi-empirical engineering models or scale model tests. Presently, CFD methods for use in ELV design are being jointly developed at the Space Transportation Division (MDA-STD) and New Aircraft Missiles Division (MDA-NAMD). An explicit three dimensional, zonal, finite-volume, full Navier-Stokes (FNS) solver with finite rate hydrocarbon/air and aluminum combustion kinetics was developed to accurately compute ELV power-on flowfields. Mississippi State University's GENIE++ general purpose interactive grid generation code was chosen to create zonal, finite volume viscous grids. Axisymmetric, time dependent, turbulent CFD simulations of a Delta DSV-2A vehicle with a MB-3 liquid main engine burning RJ-1/LOX were first completed. Hydrocarbon chemical kinetics and a k-epsilon turbulence model were employed and predictions were validated with flight measurements of base pressure and temperature. Zonal internal/external grids were created for a Delta DSV-2C vehicle with a MB-3 and three Castor-1 solid motors burning and a Delta-2 with an RS-27 main engine (LOX/RP-1) and 9 GEM's attached/6 burning. Cold air, time dependent FNS calculations were performed for DSV-2C during 1992. Single phase simulations that employ finite rate hydrocarbon and aluminum (solid fuel) combustion chemistry are currently in progress. Reliable and efficient Eulerian algorithms are needed to model two phase (solid-gas) momentum and energy transfer mechanisms for solid motor fuel combustion products.

Interference-free measurements of the subsonic aerodynamics of slanted-base ogive cylinders

Drag, lift, pitching moment, and base-pressure measurements have been made, free of support interference, on a range of slanted-base ogive cylinders, using the NASA Langley Research Center 13-in magnetic suspension and balance system. Test Mach numbers were in the range 0.04-0.2. Two types of wake flow were observed, a quasi-symmetric turbulent closure or a longitudinal vortex flow. Aerodynamic characteristics differ dramatically between the two wake types. Drag measurements are shown to be in agreement with previous tests. A hysteretic behavior of the wake with varying Reynold's number has been discovered for the 45-deg base. An interaction between forebody boundary-layer state and wake flow and base pressures has been detected for higher slant angles.

An adaptive grid/Navier-Stokes methodology for the calculation of nozzle afterbody base flows with a supersonic freestream

This paper describes an adaptive grid method for base flows in a supersonic freestream. The method is based on the direct finite-difference statement of the equidistribution principle. The weighting factor is a combination of the Mach number, density, and velocity first-derivative gradients in the radial direction. Two key ideas of the method are to smooth the weighting factor by using a type of implicit smoothing and to allow boundary points to move in the grid adaptation process. An AGARD nozzle afterbody base flow configuration is used to demonstrate the performance of the adaptive grid methodology. Computed base pressures are compared to experimental data. The adapted grid solutions offer a dramatic improvement in base pressure prediction compared to solutions computed on a nonadapted grid. A total-variation-diminishing (TVD) Navier-Stokes scheme is used to solve the governing flow equations.

Flight-measured pressure characteristics of aft-facing steps in thick boundary layer flow for transonic and supersonic Mach numbers

Aft-facing step base pressure flight data were obtained for three step heights for nominal transonic Mach numbers of 0.80, 0.90, and 0.95, and for supersonic Mach numbers of 2.2, 2.5, and 2.8 with a Reynolds number, based on the fuselage length ahead of the step, of about 10 to the 8th power. Surface static pressures were measured ahead of the step, behind the step, and on the step face (base), and a boundary layer rake was used to obtain boundary layer reference conditions. A comparison of the data from the present and previous experiments shows the same trend of increasing base pressure ratio (decreasing drag) with increasing values of momentum thickness to step height ratios. However, the absolute level of these data does not always agree at the supersonic Mach numbers. For momentum thickness to height ratios near 1.0, the differences in the base pressure ratios appear to be primarily a function of Reynolds number based on the momentum thickness. Thus, for Mach numbers above 2, the data analyzed show that the base pressure ratio decreases (drag increases) as Reynolds number based on momentum thickness increases for a given momentum thickness and step height.

Flight tests of external modifications used to reduce blunt base drag

The effectiveness of a trailing disk (the trapped vortex concept) in reducing the blunt base drag of an 8-in diameter body of revolution was studied from measurements made both in flight and in full-scale wind-tunnel tests. The experiment demonstrated the significant base drag reduction capability of the trailing disk to Mach 0.93. The maximum base drag reduction obtained from a cavity tested on the flight body of revolution was not significant. The effectiveness of a splitter plate and a vented-wall cavity in reducing the base drag of a quasi-two-dimensional fuselage closure was studied from base pressure measurements made in flight. The fuselage closure was between the two engines of the F-111 airplane; therefore, the base pressures were in the presence of jet engine exhaust. For Mach numbers from 1.10 to 1.51, significant base drag reduction was provided by the vented-wall cavity configuration. The splitter plate was not considered effective in reducing base drag at any Mach number tested.

Numerical Analysis of Base Flowfield for a Four-Engine Clustered Nozzle Configuration

Excessive base heating has been a problem for many launch vehicles. For certain designs such as the direct dump of turbine exhaust inside and at the lip of the nozzle, the potential burning of the turbine exhaust in the base region can be of great concern. Accurate prediction of the base environment at altitudes is therefore very important during the vehicle design phase. Otherwise, undesirable consequences may occur. In this study, the turbulent base flowfield of a cold flow experimental investigation for a four-engine clustered nozzle was numerically benchmarked using a pressure-based computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method. This is a necessary step before the benchmarking of hot flow and combustion flow tests can be considered. Since the medium was unheated air, reasonable prediction of the base pressure distribution at high altitude was the main goal. Several physical phenomena pertaining to the multiengine clustered nozzle base flow physics were deduced from the analysis.

A computational investigation of supersonic axisymmetric flow over boattails containing a centered propulsive jet

The influence of underexpanded jets on a supersonic afterbody flow field is investigated using computational techniques. The thin-shear-layer formulation of the compressible, Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations is solved using a time-dependent, implicit numerical algorithm. Solutions are obtained for supersonic flow over an axisymmetric conical afterbody containing a centered propulsive jet where the free-stream Mach number is 2.0 and the jet exit Mach number is 2.5. Exhaust-jet static pressures are considered in the range of 2 to 9 times the free-stream static pressure and with nozzle-exit half-angles from 15 deg to 43 deg. Comparisons are made with experimental results for base pressure, separation distance, afterbody pressure distribution, anf flow-field structure. Although good quantitative agreement with experimental separation distance and base pressure level is not observed, the parametric trends induced by exhaust-jet pressure level and nozzle-exit angle are well predicted, as are the flow-field details in the vicinity of the afterbody and in the exhaust plume.

Segmented multigrid domain decomposition solutions for three dimensional viscous recirculating flows

A segmented multigrid domain decomposition strategy is combined with a pressure-based form of flux-vector discretization for 3D incompressible and compressible viscous flow applications. A pressure-based form of flux-vector splitting is applied to the Navier-Stokes (NS) equations, which are represented by an implicit lowest-order reduced NS system and a purely diffusive higher-order deferred corrector. A trapezoidal or boxlike form of discretization insures that all mass conservation properties are satisfied at interfacial and outflow boundaries, even for this primitive-variable nonstaggered grid computation. Improvements in gridding strategy are presented by allowing for disjoint subdomains that provide optimal resolution of disparate flow features.

Loci-STREAM Version 0.9

Loci-STREAM is an evolving computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software tool for simulating possibly chemically reacting, possibly unsteady flows in diverse settings, including rocket engines, turbomachines, oil refineries, etc. Loci-STREAM implements a pressure- based flow-solving algorithm that utilizes unstructured grids. (The benefit of low memory usage by pressure-based algorithms is well recognized by experts in the field.) The algorithm is robust for flows at all speeds from zero to hypersonic. The flexibility of arbitrary polyhedral grids enables accurate, efficient simulation of flows in complex geometries, including those of plume-impingement problems. The present version - Loci-STREAM version 0.9 - includes an interface with the Portable, Extensible Toolkit for Scientific Computation (PETSc) library for access to enhanced linear-equation-solving programs therein that accelerate convergence toward a solution. The name "Loci" reflects the creation of this software within the Loci computational framework, which was developed at Mississippi State University for the primary purpose of simplifying the writing of complex multidisciplinary application programs to run in distributed-memory computing environments including clusters of personal computers. Loci has been designed to relieve application programmers of the details of programming for distributed-memory computers.

Further Testing of an Amine-based Pressure-Swing System for Carbon Dioxide and Humidity Control

In a crewed spacecraft environment, atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) and moisture control are crucial. Hamilton Sundstrand has developed a stable and efficient amine-based CO2 and water vapor sorbent, SA9T, that is well suited for use in a spacecraft environment. The sorbent is efficiently packaged in pressure-swing regenerable beds that are thermally linked to improve removal efficiency and minimize vehicle thermal loads. Flows are all controlled with a single spool valve. This technology has been baselined for the new Orion spacecraft. However, more data was needed on the operational characteristics of the package in a simulated spacecraft environment. A unit was therefore tested with simulated metabolic loads in a closed chamber at Johnson Space Center during the last third of 2006. Those test results were reported in a 2007 ICES paper. A second test article was incorporated for a third phase of testing, and that test article was modified to allow pressurized gas purge regeneration on the launch pad in addition to the standard vacuum regeneration in space. Metabolic rates and chamber volumes were also adjusted to reflect current programmatic standards. The third phase of tests was performed during the spring and summer of 2007. Tests were run with a range of operating conditions, varying: cycle time, vacuum pressure (or purge gas flow rate), air flow rate, and crew activity levels. Results of this testing are presented and potential flight operational strategies discussed.

Analysis of Linear Aerospike Plume Induced X-33 Base Heating Environment

Computational analysis is conducted to study the effect of an linear aerospike engine plume on the X-33 base-heating environment during ascent flight. To properly account for the freestream-body interaction and to allow for potential plume-induced flow-separation, the thermo-flowfield of the entire vehicle at several trajectory points is computed. A sequential grid-refinement technique is used in conjunction with solution-adaptive, patched, and embedded grid methods to limit the model to a manageable size. The computational methodology is based on a three-dimensional, finite-difference, viscous flow, chemically reacting, pressure-based computational fluid dynamics formulation, and a three-dimensional, finite-volume, spectral-line based weighted-sum-of-gray-gases absorption, computational radiation heat transfer formulation. The computed forebody and afterbody surface pressure coefficients and base pressure characteristic curves are compared with those of a cold-flow test. The predicted convective and radiative base-heat fluxes, the effect of base-bleed, and the potential of plume-induced flow separation are presented.

Aerodynamic characteristics of Lockheed delta-body orbiter and stage-and-one-half launch vehicle

An experimental wind tunnel test program was conducted to investigate the subsonic through high supersonic aerodynamic characteristics of the Lockheed delta lifting body orbiter and stage-and-one-half launch vehicle. Analyses and results of these data are presented. A 0.01-scale model of the LS 200-5 system was designed and fabricated for testing in wind tunnels. Orbiter and launch configurations were tested over a speed range of Mach 0.6 to 2.0, whereas only the orbiter was tested over a speed range of Mach 2.3 to 4.6. Six-component force and moment data, base pressures, and schlieren photos were obtained at various angles-of-attack and sideslip. A 0.03-scale model of the orbiter was also designed, fabricated, and tested in a wind tunnel. Six-component force and moment data, base pressure, and a limited amount of tuft flow visualization data were obtained on a variety of configuration combinations.

Recent aerodynamic measurements with Magnetic Suspension Systems

This paper reviews recent aerodynamic tests of a family of slanted-base ogive-cylinders using the NASA Langley 13-inch Magnetic Suspension and Balance System. Results include drag, lift, pitching moment, support interference and base pressure measurements. Mach numbers were in the range 0.04 to 0.2. Drag results are shown to be in satisfactory agreement with previous measurements. Significant support interferences were found at all test conditions. Comparison is made between interference free base pressures, obtained using remote telemetry, and sting cavity pressures. Test results and procedures are briefly discussed in the context of the proposed helium flow facility.

Results of the NASA/MSFC FA-23 plume technology test program performed in the NASA/Ames unitary wind tunnels

A 2.25% scale model of the space shuttle external tank and solid rocket boosters was tested in the NASA/Ames Unitary 11 x 11 foot transonic and 9 x 7 foot supersonic tunnels to obtain base pressure data with firing solid propellant exhaust plumes. Data system difficulties prevented the acquisition of any useful data in the 9 x 7 tunnel. However, 28 successful rocket test firings were made in the 11 x 11 tunnel, providing base pressure data at Mach numbers of 0.5, 0.9, 1.05, 1.2, and 1.3 and at plume pressure ratios ranging from 11 to 89.
