Fabrication and Performance of NiCuCoFeMn High Entropy Alloy Nanopastes for Brazing Inconel 718

Overview: High entropy alloys (HEAs) are a class of metallic alloys consisting of 5 plus elemental components and have four core effects - 1. High mixing entropy - 2. Sluggish diffusion kinetics - 3. High lattice distortion - 4. Cocktail effect; Boron-free, silicon-free brazing materials for nickel superalloys to avoid brittle intermetallic and eutectic phase formation; Size-dependent melting point depression can eliminate the need for boron, silicon and other melting point depressants; A Ni-Mn-Fe-Co-Cu HEA with low solidus and liquidus temperatures (1080 °C and 1150 °C) was developed; Low solidus and liquidus temperatures of the HEA combined with the nanoscale melting point depression in this study; Bulk HEA fabricated by induction melting of elemental powders; HEA nanoparticles (NPs) fabricated by ball milling of the HEA micropowder; Inconel 718 was laser brazed in air using the HEA and bulk and NP performances are compared.

Sample Return Containerization and Planetary Protection Using Brazing for Breaking the Chain of Contact to Mars

Planetary protection of Mars samples returned to Earth in a future NASA mission is a critical part of preventing uncontrolled biological materials being released from the samples. The planetary protection process requires addressing the potential risks and would involve “breaking the chain of contact (BTC)”, where any returned material reaching Earth for further analysis would have to be sealed inside a container with extremely high confidence. The sterilization process would require destroying any potential biological materials that may contaminate the external surface of the container. A novel process for containing the returned samples has been conceived and developed at JPL. The process consists of using induction heated brazing to synchronously sterilize, separate, seam and seal the container. In this case. the braze material is heated to the level of melting at temperatures higher than 500°C to assure sterilizing exposed areas since carbon bonds are broken above this temperature. The container that encloses the samples consists of double walls with interstitial space that is Earth-clean. The process consists of two-steps, where one was intended to be prepared on Earth and the second potentially executed on orbit around Mars. The latest results of this study that established the needed capability are described and discussed in this manuscript.

Titanium treatment improves brazed joints

Pretreating metal with a thin coating of pure titanium improves the wettability and flow of brazing alloys. This can be used in the manufacturing of aviation and aerospace components where high strength-to-weight ratio must be achieved.

Coating method enables low-temperature brazing of stainless steel

Gold coated stainless steel tubes containing insulated electrical conductors are brazed at a low temperature to a copper coated stainless steel sealing block with a gold-copper eutectic. This produces an effective seal without using flux or damaging the electrical conductors.

Brazing process using'al-Si filler alloy reliably bonds aluminum parts

Brazing process employs an aluminum-silicon filler alloy for diffusion bonding of aluminum parts in a vacuum or inert gas atmosphere. This process is carried out at temperatures substantially below those required in conventional process and produces bonds of greater strength and reliability.

High-speed furnace uses infrared radiation for controlled brazing

Furnace produces controlled heat for brazing and heat treating metals over a wide range of temperatures by using a near-infrared heat source positioned at one focus of an ellipsoidal reflector mounted below a cylindrical quartz chamber. This furnace maintains a pure atmosphere, has rapid heatup and cooldown, and permits visual observation.

Boron-deoxidized copper withstands brazing temperatures

Boron-deoxidized high-conductivity copper is used for fabrication of heat transfer components that are brazed in a hydrogen atmosphere. This copper has high strength and ductility at elevated temperatures and does not exhibit massive intergranular failure.

Braze alloys used as temperature indicators

Patches of braze alloys having known fusion are applied to portions of a metal surface where temperature indicators are required. This method is used to measure temperatures over the range of 175 degrees to 2100 degrees fahrenheit where it is not feasible to employ conventional temperature detectors.
