Towards understanding the magnetic properties of the breathing pyrochlore compound Ba3Yb2Zn5O11through single-crystal studies

Abstract Ba 3 Yb 2 Zn 5 O 11 is exceptional among breathing pyrochlore compounds for being in the nearly-decoupled limit where inter-tetrahedron interactions are weak, hosting isolated clusters or molecular magnet-like tetrahedra of magnetic ytterbium (Yb 3+ ) ions. In this work, we present the study carried out on single-crystal samples of the breathing pyrochlore Ba 3 Yb 2 Zn 5 O 11 , using a variety of magnetometry and neutron scattering techniques along with theoretical modeling. We employ inelastic neutron scattering to investigate the magnetic dynamics as a function of applied field (with respect to both magnitude and direction) down to a temperature of 70 mK, where inelastic scattering reveals dispersionless bands of excitations as found in earlier powder sample studies, in good agreement with a single-tetrahedron model. However, diffuse neutron scattering at zero field and dc-susceptibility at finite field exhibit features suggesting the presence of excitations at low-energy that are not captured by the single tetrahedron model. Analysis of the local structure down to 2 K via pair distribution function analysis finds no evidence of structural disorder. We conclude that effects beyond the single tetrahedron model are important in describing the low-energy, low-temperature physics of Ba 3 Yb 2 Zn 5 O 11 , but their nature remains undetermined.

Realization of two-sublattice exchange physics in the triangular lattice compound Ba 3 Er(BO 3 ) 3

Geometric frustration commonly occurs in materials where magnetic rare-earth ions are arranged on a two-dimensional triangular lattice. These compounds have been gaining significant attention lately, as they hold the promise of revealing unique quantum states of matter. However, little attention has been devoted to cases where spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ rare-earth ions are substituted with ions exhibiting higher spin multiplicities. Here, we successfully synthesize high-quality single crystal samples of Ba 3 Er(BO 3 ) 3 , which is part of the family of triangular lattice compounds. In our experiments, conducted at extremely low temperatures (around 100 millikelvin), we observe two sublattice exchange interactions in Ba 3 Er(BO 3 ) 3 , resulting in the hexagonal lattice spins exhibiting a mixture of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic tendencies. Our theoretical analysis suggest that this behavior may be attributed to the distinct positions of magnetic ions within the crystal lattice. However, the presence of quantum effects adds an extra layer of complexity to our findings, calling for further exploration.

Model independent approach for calculating galaxy rotation curves for low S/N MaNGA galaxies

Internal kinematics of galaxies, traced through the stellar rotation curve or two dimensional velocity map, carry important information on galactic structure and dark matter. With upcoming surveys, the velocity map may play a key role in the development of kinematic lensing as an astrophysical probe. Here, we improve techniques for extracting velocity information from integral field spectroscopy at low signal-to-noise (S/N), without a template, and demonstrate substantial advantages over the standard Penalized PiXel-Fitting method (pPXF) approach. Robust rotation curves can be derived down to S/N ≈ 2 using our method.

2022 roadmap on 3D printing for energy

The energy transition is one of the main challenges of our society and therefore a major driver for the scientific community. To ensure a smart transition to a sustainable future energy scenario different technologies such as energy harvesting using solar cells or windmills and chemical storage in batteries, super-capacitors or hydrogen have to be developed and ultimately deployed. New fabrication approaches based on additive manufacturing and the digitalization of the industrial processes increase the potential to achieve highly efficient and smart technologies required to increase the competitiveness of clean energy technologies against fossil fuels. In this frame, the present roadmap highlights the tremendous potential of 3D printing as a new route to fully automate the manufacturing of energy devices designed as digital files. Additionally, this article gives numerous guidelines to maximize the performance and efficiency of the next generation of 3D printed devices for the energy transition while reducing the waste of critical raw materials. In particular, the paper is focused on the current status, present challenges and the expected and required advances of 3D printing for the fabrication of the most relevant energy technologies such as fuel cells and electrolysers, batteries, solar cells, super-capacitors, thermoelectric generators, chemical reactors and turbomachinery.

Out of one, many: distinguishing time delays from lensed supernovae

ABSTRACT Gravitationally lensed Type Ia supernovae are an emerging probe with great potential for constraining dark energy, spatial curvature, and the Hubble constant. The multiple images and their time delayed and magnified fluxes may be unresolved, however, blended into a single light curve. We demonstrate methods without a fixed source template matching for extracting the individual images, determining whether there are one (no lensing) or two or four (lensed) images, and measuring the time delays between them that are valuable cosmological probes. We find 100 per cent success for determining the number of images for time delays greater than ∼10 d.

A novel approach for calculating galaxy rotation curves using spaxel cross-correlation and iterative smoothing

ABSTRACT Precise measurements of the internal dynamics of galaxies have proven of great importance for understanding the internal dark matter distribution of galaxies. We present a novel method for measuring the line-of-sight (LOS) velocities across the face of galaxies by cross-correlation of spectral pixels (spaxels) and an iterative method of smoothing. On simulated data the method can accurately recover the input LOS velocities for different types of spectra (absorption-line dominated, emission-line dominated, and differing shapes of the continuum), and can handle stellar population radial gradients. Most important of all, it continues to provide reliable measurements of LOS velocities with reasonable uncertainties even when the spectra are very low signal-to-noise ratio (approaching ∼1), which is a challenge for traditional template-fitting approaches. We apply our method to data from a real MaNGA galaxy as a demonstration and find promising results with good precision. This novel approach can be complementary to existing methods primarily based on template fitting.

The hierarchical growth of bright central galaxies and intracluster light as traced by the magnitude gap

Using a sample of 2800 galaxy clusters identified in the Dark Energy Survey across the redshift range 0.20 < z < 0.60, we characterize the hierarchical assembly of bright central galaxies (BCGs) and the surrounding intracluster light (ICL). To quantify hierarchical formation we use the stellar mass–halo mass (SMHM) relation, comparing the halo mass, estimated via the mass–richness relation, to the stellar mass within the BCG + ICL system. Moreover, we incorporate the magnitude gap (M14), the difference in brightness between the BCG (measured within 30 kpc) and fourth brightest cluster member galaxy within 0.5 $R_{200,c}$, as a third parameter in this linear relation. The inclusion of M14, which traces BCG hierarchical growth, increases the slope and decreases the intrinsic scatter, highlighting that it is a latent variable within the BCG + ICL SMHM relation. Moreover, the correlation with M14 decreases at large radii. However, the stellar light within the BCG + ICL transition region (30 –80 kpc) most strongly correlates with halo mass and has a statistically significant correlation with M14. Since the transition region and M14 are independent measurements, the transition region may grow due to the BCG’s hierarchical formation. Additionally, as M14 and ICL result from hierarchical growth, we use a stacked sample and find that clusters with large M14 values are characterized by larger ICL and BCG + ICL fractions, which illustrates that the merger processes that build the BCG stellar mass also grow the ICL. Furthermore, this may suggest that M14 combined with the ICL fraction can identify dynamically relaxed clusters.

Observation of Unprecedented Fractional Magnetization Plateaus in a New Shastry-Sutherland Ising Compound

Geometrically frustrated magnetic systems, such as those based on the Shastry-Sutherland lattice (SSL), offer a rich playground for exploring unconventional magnetic states. The delicate balance between competing interactions in these systems leads to the emergence of novel phases. We present the characterization of Er 2 ⁢Be 2⁢ GeO 7 , an SSL compound with Er 3+ ions forming orthogonal dimers separated by nonmagnetic layers whose structure is invariant under the 𝑃⁢$\bar{4}21$⁢𝑚 space group. Neutron scattering reveals an antiferromagnetic dimer structure at zero field, typical of Ising spins on that lattice and consistent with the anisotropic magnetization observed. However, magnetization measurements exhibit fractional plateaus at 1/4 and 1/2 of saturation, in contrast to the expected 1/3 plateau of the SSL Ising model. By comparing the energy of candidate states with ground-state lower bounds we show that this behavior requires spatially anisotropic interactions, leading to an anisotropic Shastry-Sutherland Ising model symmetric under the 𝐶⁢𝑚⁢𝑚⁢2 space group. This anisotropy is consistent with the small orthorhombic distortion observed with single-crystal neutron diffraction. The other properties, including thermodynamics, which have been investigated theoretically using tensor networks, point to small residual interactions, potentially due to further couplings and quantum fluctuations. This study highlights Er 2 ⁢Be 2 ⁢GeO 7 as a promising platform for investigating exotic magnetic phenomena.

Light-Induced Decoupling of Electronic and Magnetic Properties in Manganites

The strongly correlated material La 0.7 ⁢Sr 0.3 ⁢Mn⁢O 3 (LSMO) exhibits metal-to-insulator and magnetic transition near room temperature. Although the physical properties of LSMO can be manipulated by strain, chemical doping, temperature, or magnetic field, they often require large external stimuli. Further, to include additional flexibility and tunability, we developed a hybrid optoelectronic heterostructure that uses photocarrier injection from cadmium sulfide (Cd⁢ S) to an LSMO layer to change its electrical conductivity. LSMO exhibits no significant optical response; however, the Cd ⁢S/LSMO heterostructures show an enhanced conductivity, with a resistance drop of about 37%, at the transition temperature under light stimuli. This enhanced conductivity in response to light is comparable to the effect of a 9 T magnetic field in pure LSMO. Surprisingly, the optical and magnetic responses of Cd⁢ S/LSMO heterostructures are decoupled and exhibit different effects when both stimuli are applied. This unexpected behavior shows that heterostructuring strongly correlated oxides may require a new understanding of the coupling of physical properties across the transitions and provide the means to implement new functionalities.

Quasi-one-dimensional magnetism in the spin-12 antiferromagnet BaNa 2 Cu(VO 4 ) 2

Here, we report synthesis and magnetic properties of quasi-one-dimensional spin- 1 2 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain compound BaNa 2 Cu ( VO 4 ) 2 . This orthovanadate has a centrosymmetric crystal structure, C 2 / c , where the magnetic Cu 2 + ions form spin chains. These chains are arranged in layers, with the chain direction changing by 62 ° between the two successive layers. Alternatively, the spin lattice can be viewed as anisotropic triangular layers upon taking the interchain interactions into consideration. Despite this potential structural complexity, temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, electron spin resonance intensity, and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) shift agree well with the uniform spin- 1 / 2 Heisenberg chain model with an intrachain coupling of J / k B ≃ 5.6 K. The saturation field obtained from the magnetic isotherm measurement consistently reproduces the value of J / k B . Further, the V 51 NMR spin-lattice relaxation rate mimics the one-dimensional character in the intermediate temperature range, whereas magnetic long-range order sets in below T N ≃ 0.25 K. The effective interchain coupling is estimated to be J ⊥ / k B ≃ 0.1 K. The theoretical estimation of exchange couplings using band-structure calculations reciprocate our experimental findings and unambiguously establish the one-dimensional character of the compound. Finally, the spin lattice of BaNa 2 Cu ( VO 4 ) 2 is compared with the chemically similar but not isostructural compound BaAg 2 Cu ( VO 4 ) 2 .

Giant orbital polarization of Ni 2+ in a square planar environment

Finding large orbital polarization in Ni-based oxides has become a topic of paramount interest in recent years due to the prospect of finding superconductivity. In this study, we investigate the electronic structure of single-crystalline samples of Sr 2 CuO 3 and Ni-doped Sr 2 CuO 3 containing Cu/NiO 4 square planar units. Our polarization-dependent x-ray absorption spectroscopy experiments reveal extremely large orbital polarization (~63%) for Ni 2+ . Cluster calculations and ab initio calculations find that the giant orbital polarization arises due to the low-spin (S=0) configuration with two holes in the Ni 3d x 2 -y 2 orbital, contrary to the expected high-spin (S=1) state from Hund's first rule.

Doping-driven resistive collapse of the Mott insulator in a minimal model for VO 2

Here we study the resistive collapse of the Mott insulator state in the dimer Hubbard model. This minimal model has been used to describe the physics of VO 2 , and should be relevant to other strongly correlated materials. It incorporates the physics of correlated dimers and the explicit competition between on-site Coulomb repulsion and magnetic exchange interactions. Our results unveil that between the Mott insulator at half filling and the Fermi liquid metal at high doping there is an intermediate bad metallic phase with exotic features such as a pseudogap, orbital selectivity, and a first-order metal-metal transition. The model is solved within dynamical mean field theory by means of quantum Monte Carlo, which provides the numerically exact solution of the model in the limit of large lattice dimensionality. This model can be considered as a minimal one that captures exotic phenomena associated to the physics of a doped Mott insulator, shading light on their basic physical mechanism.

We interpret these results using a simplified toy model and provide insight into the low-energy physics of this system beyond the single tetrahedron physics proposed previously.

Magnetoresistance anomaly during the electrical triggering of a metal-insulator transition

Phase separation naturally occurs in a variety of magnetic materials and it often has a major impact on both electric and magnetotransport properties. In resistive switching systems, phase separation can be created on demand by inducing local switching, which provides an opportunity to tune the electronic and magnetic state of the device by applying voltage. Here we explore the magnetotransport properties in the ferromagnetic oxide La 0.7 ⁢Sr 0.3 ⁢MnO 3 (LSMO) during the electrical triggering of an intrinsic metal-insulator transition (MIT), which produces volatile resistive switching. This switching occurs in a characteristic spatial pattern, i.e., the formation of a high-resistance barrier perpendicular to the current flow, enabling an electrically actuated ferromagnetic-paramagnetic-ferromagnetic phase separation. At the threshold voltage of the MIT triggering, both anisotropic and colossal magnetoresistances exhibit anomalies including a large increase in magnitude and a sign flip. Computational analysis revealed that these anomalies originate from the coupling between the switching-induced phase separation state and the intrinsic magnetoresistance of LSMO. Furthermore, this work demonstrates that driving the MIT material into an out-of-equilibrium resistive switching state provides the means for electrical control of the magnetotransport phenomena.

Coupling strongly correlated electron systems to a tunable electronic reservoir

Here, we study the effect of coupling an electronic reservoir to a Hubbard model and to a dimer Hubbard model. This is motivated by recent experiments on the effect of illumination on the insulator-metal transition in a vanadium oxides and photoconductive cadmium sulfide heterostructure. We model the system as an electronic reservoir hybridized to the correlated system. We assume that the light intensity controls the hybridization coupling strength. We find that the light intensity acts similarly as the temperature in the weak interaction regime. This is consistent with the role played by electronic reservoirs in out-of-equilibrium systems. In contrast, qualitative differences appear at strong coupling. We show that modeling the V 2 ⁢O 3 compound with a Hubbard model, our results describe qualitatively well the observed illumination-driven suppression of the insulator-metal transition. In contrast, in the DHM results fail to capture the mild suppression observed in the case of VO 2 . This indicates that the lattice may play an important role in this case.

Evidence of Dirac Quantum Spin Liquid in YbZn 2⁢ GaO 5

The emergence of a quantum spin liquid (QSL), a state of matter that can result when electron spins are highly correlated but do not become ordered, has been the subject of a considerable body of research in condensed matter physics [1,2]. Spin liquid states have been proposed as hosts for high-temperature superconductivity [3] and can host topological properties with potential applications in quantum information science [4]. The excitations of most quantum spin liquids are not conventional spin waves but rather quasiparticles known as spinons, whose existence is well established experimentally only in one-dimensional systems; the unambiguous experimental realization of QSL behavior in higher dimensions remains challenging. Here, in this work, we investigate the novel compound $YbZn_{2}GaO_{5}$, which hosts an ideal triangular lattice of effective spin-1/2 moments with no detectable inherent chemical disorder. Thermodynamic and inelastic neutron scattering measurements performed on high-quality single crystal samples of $YbZn_{2}GaO_{5}$ exclude the possibility of long-range magnetic ordering down to 0.06 K, demonstrate a quadratic power law for the specific heat and reveal a continuum of magnetic excitations in parts of the Brillouin zone. Both low-temperature thermodynamics and inelastic neutron scattering spectra suggest that $YbZn_{2}GaO_{5}$ is a U(1) Dirac QSL with spinon excitations concentrated at certain points in the Brillouin zone. We advanced these results by performing additional specific heat measurements under finite fields, further confirming the theoretical expectations for a Dirac QSL on the triangular lattice of $YbZn_{2}GaO_{5}$.

Synthesis and characterization of the novel breathing pyrochlore compound Ba 3 ⁢Tm 2⁢ Zn 5⁢ O 11

In this study, a novel material from the rare-earth based breathing pyrochlore family, Ba 3 ⁢Tm 2 ⁢Zn 5 ⁢O 11 , was successfully synthesized. Powder x-ray diffraction and high-resolution powder neutron diffraction confirmed phase purity and the $F\bar4$3⁢𝑚 breathing pyrochlore crystal structure, while thermogravimetric analysis revealed incongruent melting behavior compared to its counterpart, Ba 3 ⁢Yb 2⁢ Zn 5⁢ O 11 . High-quality single crystals of Ba 3 ⁢Tm 2 ⁢Zn 5 ⁢O 11 were grown using the traveling solvent floating zone technique and assessed using Laue x-ray diffraction and single crystal x-ray diffraction. Further, thermodynamic characterization indicated paramagnetic behavior down to 0.05 K, and inelastic neutron scattering measurements identified distinct dispersionless crystal electric field energy bands, with the fitted crystal electric field model predicting a single-ion singlet ground state and an energy gap of ∼9 meV separating it from the first excited (singlet) state. Additional low-energy excitation studies on single crystals revealed dispersionless bands at 0.8 and 1 meV. Computed phonon dispersions from first-principles calculations ruled out phonons as the origin of these modes, further illustrating the puzzling and unique properties of Ba 3 ⁢Tm⁢ 2 Zn 5 ⁢O 11 .

Close Proximity to a Quantum Phase Transition in TmZn2⁢GaO5

TmZn2⁢GaO5 is a newly synthesized triangular lattice magnet that exhibits a unique quantum phase characterized by strong Ising anisotropy, a pseudodoublet crystal electric field ground state, and a low-energy gapped excitation at the 𝐾 point. Unlike its well-known counterparts, TmMgGa⁢O4 and YbMgGa⁢O4, this material crystallizes in a distinct hexagonal structure, leading to a platform for investigating frustrated magnetism. Magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, and inelastic neutron scattering measurements confirm the absence of long-range magnetic order down to 50 mK, placing TmZn2⁢GaO5 in a distinct region of the transverse-field Ising model phase diagram. Theoretical calculations based on spin-wave theory and mean-field modeling reproduce key experimental observations, reinforcing the material’s placement in a quantum disordered or multipolar state near a quantum critical point that separates it from the low-energy phase of TmMgGa⁢O4. These results highlight its potential for exploring quantum disordered states, anisotropic excitations, and exotic quantum phases in frustrated spin systems.
