Designing a Robust MEA-Based Post-Combustion Carbon Capture Process with Capture Rate Guarantees

This work presents an application of the nonlinear two-stage robust optimization solver PyROS to the model-based design and operation of a monoethanolamine scrubbing process for CO2 capture under epistemic uncertainty. Through this application, risk-averse process designs are successfully obtained for CO2 capture targets ranging from 90% to over 99%. In particular, the risk-averse solutions for CO2 capture targets of up to 98% are shown to be only marginally more expensive than their nominally optimal counterparts. Thus, the results demonstrate the utility of recently developed nonlinear robust optimization approaches for the solution of large-scale chemical process models under uncertainty.

The Reaction Rates of Amidogen and Ammonia with Nitrous Oxide: Implications for Combustion Mechanisms

Pulsed laser photolysis experiments with laser-induced fluorescence detection of NH 2 set an upper limit to the rate constant for reaction with N 2 O of k < 1 × 10 −15 cm 3 molecule −1 s −1 at 513 K. Computations were based on geometries and anharmonic frequency analysis (B2PLYP-D3/cc-pVTZ) followed by coupled cluster calculations extrapolated to the infinite basis set limit, with corrections for core−valence electron correlation, scalar relativistic effects, and correlation up to CCSDT(Q). Species that showed multireference character were quantified with MRCI(7,7)+Q/cc-pVTZ theory. Rate constants were obtained for the dominant product channel H 2 NN + NO, along with HN 3 + OH, H 2 NO + N 2 , NNH + HNO, ON(NH) 2 and HNNH + NO. The last channel is slow even at 2500 K, contrary to an early empirical estimate and confirming recent suggestions. Modeling of literature experiments on oxidation of NH 3 by N 2 O shows that all channels are too slow to make a significant impact on the loss of N 2 O in ammonia flames. Similarly, the direct NH 3 + N 2 O reaction is found to be negligibly slow.

Plasma Assisted Combustion and Chemical Processing: Chapter 9 - Plasma Diagnostics

Plasma dynamics and chemistry have a broad range of timescales from picoseconds to milliseconds. In addition, it involves nonequilibrium energy transfer between electrons, ions, electronically and vibrationally excited states, radicals, intermediate species, and reactants and products as well as surface charges and chemistry. To understand plasma physics and chemistry, it is essential to conduct time and space resolved, quantitative detection of nonequilibrium temperature distributions, electron energy and number density, electric field, and species concentrations. There are enormous publications and review articles on this subject. The focus of this chapter is to be placed on the most recent progress in gas phase plasma properties and chemistry, especially on optical emission spectroscopy, laser absorption spectroscopy, Faraday rotational spectroscopy, Raman and Thompson scattering, femtosecond and picosecond (fs/ps) coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) spectroscopy, and electric field-induced second harmonic generation methods.

SAF combustion and contrail formation research [Slides]

Sustainable aviation fuels (SAFs) offer an effective pathway to decarbonize the aviation sector, which accounts for about 5% of the global net effective radiative forcing, and is expected to double in the next two decades. A primary objective of the SAF GC Roadmap is to develop sustainable fuels that avoid “sooting, aerosols, and other contributors to vapor trail emissions." Another parts of this project is motivated by ongoing efforts to develop aromatic-free SAFs by using cycloalkanes to match seal swell characteristics of current fossil-based jet fuel (e.g. Jet A).

Validation Framework for Post-Combustion Carbon Capture CFD Simulations

First-principles based computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations are proposed as a fundamental tool for investigating solvent-based CO2 absorption in packed columns, due to the ability to accurately represent the underlying non-linear multiscale dynamics. In this work, we employ such models to investigate hydrodynamics of columns with structured by assessing the key hydrodynamic metrics, such as pressure drop and liquid holdup. Our models are validated with experimental data from a specifically designed column for this line of work. The test cases of gas and liquid flowrates and operating conditions were selected through a comprehensive sequential design of experiments approach offered by the CCSI2 toolset.

Development of advanced combustion strategies for direct injection heavy duty LPG engines to achieve near-diesel engine efficiency

The Vehicle Technologies Office funds early-stage, high-risk research to develop technology upon which industry can implement innovative transportation energy technologies that increase efficiency, decrease cost, and expand use of domestic energy sources, such as liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). To improve the viability of medium and heavy-duty vehicles the LPG engine efficiency must be closer to that of diesel. This work addresses fundamental limitations to achieve diesel-like efficiencies in heavy duty on-road LPG engines. The primary goal of this research is to achieve diesel-like efficiencies in heavy duty on-road LPG engines, focusing on the Cummins 15-liter engine platform (baseline diesel efficiency of 44% at peak torque). That goal has been achieved, though more work is needed to facilitate practical implementation of the developed technologies.

Advanced Model Development for Large Eddy Simulation of Oxy-Combustion and Supercritical Carbon Dioxide Power Cycles

A joint experimental and numerical study is performed to observe the characteristics of a supercritical carbon dioxide turbulent mixing layer in the presence of strong nonlinearities in the thermodynamic and transport properties. A bespoke experimental setup is designed and employed for this purpose and provides insight into macroscopic mixing behavior. The mixing is experimentally observed using two techniques: shadowgraphy and spontaneous Raman scattering. Qualitative and quantitative intensity fields obtained via these techniques yield instantaneous and mean density data. Spanwise temperature data is also collected using analogue resistance temperature detectors. These measurements are used to quantify the level of mixed material within the field. The experimental data are supplemented by a companion high-fidelity numerical study. The numerical results are obtained through fully resolved, three-dimensional direct numerical simulation. The numerical dataset permits observation of the near-field mixing characteristics, which are difficult to measure experimentally due to the rapid dynamics and sharp thermophysical gradients in this area. Qualitative field visualizations are presented, followed by quantitative mixed material results and observations regarding thermodynamic property trends at select locations within the field. One-dimensional spectra of the turbulent kinetic energy and solenoidal dissipation are provided to observe the spectral characteristics of the flow. Reynolds stress anisotropy is analyzed graphically through anisotropy invariance maps (Lumley triangles). The mixing quantification, spectral data and anisotropy analysis of a flow at these thermodynamic conditions represent the main outcomes of the work.

Uncertainty Quantification of Fatigue Behavior of Rough AM Surfaces and Microstructures to Enable Hydrogen Gas Turbine Combustion

Modification of fossil-fueled industrial gas turbines to accept no/low carbon fuels (Hydrogen, H2/natural gas blends) is a significant undertaking. Successful deployment of this technology sits at the intersection of three design criteria (1) new functional fuel injectors that can burn these fuels, (2) manufacturability to meet cost and time-to-market targets, and (3) durability in the harsh environment of an operating turbine. Additive manufacturing (AM) provides accelerated product development. However, uncertainty remains around the durability of parts with rough AM surfaces. A fully experimental approach towards quantifying fatigue performance of rough AM microstructures is costly and laborious. Instead, Solar Turbines Incorporated (Solar) proposes the use of a crystal plasticity finite element (CPFE) model to quantify the factors that drive AM surface fatigue behavior. Solar will use the CPFE results, along with targeted experimental data, to train a computationally efficient surrogate model that can be incorporated into existing turbine part lifing methods.
