Vehicle Platooning: An Energy Consumption Perspective

Urban traffic congestion is a chronic problem faced by many cities in the US and worldwide. It results in inefficient infrastructure use as well as increased vehicle fuel consumption and emission levels. Excessive fuel consumptions add extra costs to commuters as well as transportation businesses. Consuming less fuel and thus reducing costs by a single percentage digit can have a significant impact on the balance sheet as well as the protection of the environment. Researchers have developed, and continue to develop, tools and systems to optimize the operations of fleets as well as engines in order to burn less fuel and therefore generate less CO2 emissions. Platooning is one such tool that attempts to maintain relatively small distances (i.e. pre-determined time gap) between consecutive vehicles. It has the potential to increase the capacity of the road as well as reduce the consumed fuel. In this paper, we use a fuel consumption model for internal combustion light-duty vehicles, electric vehicles, hybrid electric vehicles, buses and trucks in order to determine and quantify the effects of platooning on a fleet fuel consumption. The results suggest that a reduction of up to 3%, 3.5%, 4.5 %, 10%, and 15% in fuel consumption can be achieved for internal combustion engine vehicles, hybrid electric vehicles, electric vehicles, buses and trucks.

Asymptotic spinspacetime

We show that Poincaré invariance directly implies the existence of a complexified Minkowski space whose real and imaginary directions unify spacetime and spin, which we dub spinspacetime. Despite the intrinsic noncommutativity of spin, spinspacetime exhibits mutually commuting holomorphic coordinates. Its twistorial construction derives the Newman-Janis shift property of spinning black holes by massive half-Fourier transforming complexified on shell kinematics, which encode a spinning analog of equivalence principle.

IR dynamics from UV divergences: UV/IR mixing, NCFT, and the hierarchy problem

The persistence of the hierarchy problem points to a violation of effective field theory expectations. A compelling possibility is that this results from a physical breakdown of EFT, which may arise from correlations between ultraviolet (UV) and infrared (IR) physics. To this end, we study noncommutative field theory (NCFT) as a toy model of UV/IR mixing which generates an emergent infrared scale from ultraviolet dynamics. We explore the range of such theories where ultraviolet divergences are transmogrified into infrared scales, focusing particularly on the properties of Yukawa theory, where we identify a new infrared pole accessible in the s-channel of the Lorentzian theory. We further investigate the interplay between UV-finiteness and UV/IR mixing by studying properties of the softly-broken noncommutative Wess-Zumino model as soft terms are varied relative to the cutoff. While the Lorentz violation inherent to noncommutative theories may limit their direct application to the hierarchy problem, these toy models provide general lessons to guide the realization of UV/IR mixing in more realistic theories.

Supercooled Large Droplet Icing Flight Research Program

During the past three winters, the NASA Glenn Research Center at Lewis Field conducted icing research flights throughout the Great Lakes region to measure the characteristics of a severe icing condition having Supercooled Large Droplets (SLD). SLD was implicated in the 1994 crash of the ATR-72 commuter aircraft. This accident focused attention on the safety hazard associated with SLD, and it led the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to identify the need for a better understanding of the atmospheric characteristics of this icing condition. In response to this need, Glenn developed a cooperative icing flight research program with the FAA, the National Center for Atmospheric Research, and the Atmospheric Environment Service of Canada. The primary objectives were to (1) characterize the SLD icing condition in terms of important icing-related parameters (such as cloud droplet size, cloud water content, and temperature), (2) develop and refine SLD icing weather forecast products, and (3) document and measure the effects of SLD ice accretions on aircraft performance.

Radiochemical Equivalence in Time-Dependent High Fluence Environments

The behavior of radiochemical detector networks has been studied extensively in regimes where the evolution of the networks is essentially linear in total fluence. In such regimes, a low-fluence expansion technique is applicable and gives good results for individual detector networks and for detector equivalence relating different networks. In higher fluence regimes, expansion methods begin to break down systematically, and a full network evolution is required. There are two main effects of high fluence. First is the obvious fact that higher order terms begin to play a role and cause network evolution to deviate from linearity in total fluence [2]. Second is the more subtle fact that time-dependence begins to play a role. The leading term in the fluence expansion is insensitive to time dependence, essentially because the average system matrix commutes with itself. At higher orders in the system matrix, this is no longer true. Put simply, (n,γ) burnback can only occur after initial (n,2n) reactions produce states on which to act, but the effects of the time ordering vanish as fluence decreases. In this note based on initial work, we describe the effects of time-dependence at high fluence on the evaluation of radiochemical equivalences.

Target pitch angle for the microburst escape maneuver

Recovery performance of a commuter-type aircraft in a microburst encounter is studied using a constant-pitch-attitude strategy and flight path optimization. Results obtained indicate that the pitch attitude which maximized climb rate in a wind shear condition is strongly dependent on whether the aircraft is subjected to a horizontal shear or a downdraft. The pitch attitude which maximizes ground clearance depends on the altitude of the encounter, the strength of the microburst, and the initial position of the aircraft with respect to the downburst core. Best results are obtained at relatively low target pitch angles, in severe wind shear encounters at very low altitudes. A technique for maximizing ground clearance involves maintaining a low pitch attitude early in the encounter, followed by a gradual pitch-up that ceases when the wind shear has been excited.

Einstein–Rosen waves and the Geroch group

Under the action of the Geroch group, the Minkowski metric can be transformed into any vacuum metric with two commuting Killing vectors. In principle, this reduces the problem of deriving vacuum metrics with two commuting Killing vectors to pure algebra. In this short note, we use these facts to give a purely algebraic derivation of the Einstein-Rosen metric, which describes a cylindrical gravitational wave. Furthermore, our derivation has a straightforward extension to gravitational pulse waves.

Commuting Line Defects At $q^N$ = 1

Here, we explain the physical origin of a curious property of algebras $\mathcal{A}_{\mathfrak{q}}$ which encode the rotation-equivariant fusion ring of half-BPS line defects in four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}$ = 2 supersymmetric quantum field theories. These algebras are a quantization of the algebras of holomorphic functions on the three-dimensional Coulomb branch of the SQFTs, with deformation parameter log $\mathfrak{q}$. They are known to acquire a large center, canonically isomorphic to the undeformed algebra, whenever $\mathfrak{q}$ is a root of unity. We give a physical explanation of this fact. We also generalize the construction to characterize the action of this center in the $\mathcal{A}_{\mathfrak{q}}$-modules associated to three-dimensional $\mathcal{N}$ = 2 boundary conditions. Finally, we use dualities to relate this construction to a construction in the Kapustin–Witten twist of four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}$ = 4 gauge theory. These considerations give simple physical explanations of certain properties of quantized skein algebras and cluster varieties, and quantum groups, when the deformation parameter is a root of unity.
