The Beam Characterization System (BCS) is an image-processing tool for estimating heliostat tracking errors. A large mirror, or heliostat, reflects the sun onto a distant target. A carefully calibrated camera then takes an image of this target to capture the shape of the reflected beam. The software kit hosts a series of scripts to identify key features and run analysis on the captured images.

Human monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) against the central repeat and junction domain of Plasmodium falciparum circumsporozoite protein (PfCSP) have been studied extensively to guide malaria vaccine design compared to antibodies against the PfCSP C terminus. Here, we describe the molecular characteristics and protective potential of 73 germline and mutated human mAbs against the highly immunogenic PfCSP C-terminal domain. Two mAbs recognized linear epitopes in the C-terminal linker with sequence similarity to repeat and junction motifs, whereas all others targeted conformational epitopes in the α-thrombospondin repeat (α-TSR) domain. Specificity for the polymorphic Th2R/Th3R but not the conserved RII+/CS.T3 region in the α-TSR was associated with IGHV3-21/IGVL3-21 or IGLV3-1 gene usage. Although the C terminus specific mAbs showed signs of more efficient affinity maturation and class-switching compared to anti-repeat mAbs, live sporozoite binding and inhibitory activity was limited to a single C-linker reactive mAb with cross-reactivity to the central repeat and junction. The data provide novel insights in the human anti-C-linker and anti-α-TSR antibody response that support exclusion of the PfCSP C terminus from malaria vaccine designs.
In this work, we demonstrate an experimental setup that would allow us to individually control each variable that could influence abrasion erosion. Subsequently, Abrasion measurements were performed for three different candidate substrate materials at low particle velocities and both low and high temperatures.
State of the art concentrating solar power plants generally rely on a two-tank system with a large central tower. These plants employ nitrate salts that are limited to approximately 565°C in practice. A novel system arrangement is proposed using molten salt as the heat transfer and energy storage media in a single thermocline storage tank with an integral heat exchanger to the power cycle. The system has unique features that enable temperatures higher than 565°C while reducing costs. This study explores the considerations for the concept and presents a preconceptual point design for a 5 MWt system capable of generating 100 MWt per day with 12 hours of thermal energy storage. This study also examines the potential operation of the system with nitrate and higher temperature chloride salts. Both salt systems appear promising and future concept maturation is recommended.

Fractal coatings on various low-cost and high-temperature metallic substrates such as SS316, SS347, In800H, In740H, In625, Haynes 230, etc. were fabricated employing our patented novel electrodeposition process at various deposition potentials and deposition times, as well as chemical etching. The best combination of the materials and processing conditions were co-optimized for the reliable and repeatable fabrication of the multifunctional coatings. Surface morphologies were examined using SEM and AFM, and fractal characterization was done using a 3D optical surface profiler. Fractal dimension was used to identify successful fabrication and material parameters. The mechanical durability of the coatings was evaluated using several standardized tests, such as sand abrasion (ASTM D968) and adhesion (ASTM D3359), to fully characterize and demonstrate the mechanical durability of the fabricated surfaces. HTF immersion tests on the fractal multifunctional coatings were conducted based on a modification of the ASTM D870, which is established for static water immersion testing. To calculate the corrosion rates and descaled weight loss of the samples subjected to thermal exposure for different time durations (100 h, 300 h, 500 h, and optionally 750 h) to estimate the corrosion rate. While protecting the substrates from corrosion is an important goal, an allied goals is also to examine the post-corrosion temperature stability and properties of the molten salts themselves due to the dissolution of the constituents of the alloys and the corrosion products from the coatings that cause “fouling” of the molten salts. Fouling characteristics of the different molten salt HTFs exposed to coated and uncoated substrates were investigated. Finally, considering a prototype molten salt/sCO2 heat exchanger, cost/performance model is developed to demonstrate that the coatings on low-cost alloys such as stainless steel provide lower levelized cost of heat exchanger compared to high nickel content Ha230.

As a follow-on to the NREL Best Practices report, a technical Design Basis Document has been developed for salt systems. The report includes prescriptive specifications for tanks, steam generators, valves, heat tracing, materials, and process engineering, with a goal of achieving a plant availability of 92+ percent.
