Use of vision and sound to classify feller-buncher operational state

Productivity measures in logging involve simultaneous recognition and classification of event occurrence and timing, and the volume of stems being handled. In full-tree felling systems these measurements are difficult to implement in an autonomous manner because of the unfavorable working environment and the abundance of confounding extraneous events. This paper proposed a vision method that used a lowcost camera to recognize feller-buncher operational events including tree cutting and piling. It used a fine K-nearest neighbors (fKNN) algorithm as the final classifier based on both audio and video features derived from short video segments as inputs. The classifier’s calibration accuracy exceeds 94%. The trained model was tested on videos recorded under various conditions. The overall accurate rates for short segments were greater than 89%. Comparisons were made between the human- and algorithm derived event detection rates, events’ durations, and inter-event timing using continuously recorded videos taken during feller operation. Video results between the fKNN model and manual observation were similar. Statistical comparison using the Kolmogorov–Smirnov test to evaluate measured parameters’ distributions (manual versus automated event duration and inter-event timing) did not show significant differences with the lowest P-value among all Kolmogorov–Smirnov tests equal to 0.12. Here the result indicated the feasibility and potential of using the method for the automatic time study of drive-to-tree feller bunchers.

Correction and calibration of atmospheric impact observations in GOES GLM data

The Earth's atmosphere is impacted daily by both meteoroids and artificial objects. Calibrated observations of the emitted light at sufficiently high sampling rates can enable or improve the estimation of impactor attributes such as size, cohesion, trajectory, and composition, but are difficult to obtain owing to the unpredictability, brevity, and high dynamic (brightness) range of impacts. Ground-based camera systems have successfully monitored small regions of the atmosphere at video frame rates and with limited radiometric capabilities, but most impacts occur over the 70% of the Earth's surface covered by water and are therefore missed by these networks. The Geostationary Lightning Mapper (GLM) instruments aboard Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites 16 and 17 provide near-hemispherical coverage at 500 frames per second. These data have been shown to contain the signatures of many independently confirmed impacts, often from both viewing angles simultaneously, and constitute an observational resource that is currently unparalleled in the public domain. NASA's Asteroid Threat Assessment Project has implemented an automated impact detection pipeline that processes data from GLM daily. Given a detected impact, the GLM data contain a wealth of information for use in quantitative follow-up analyses. However, impact events differ from lightning in ways that violate key assumptions built into GLM's design. The result is that GLM's onboard processing introduces errors into pixel observations of impact events and the calibrated energies near the periphery of the detector may be substantially overestimated. We present methods for mitigating these and other issues to produce a data product more suitable for impact analyses than the existing GLM lightning product.

A NICER View of the Massive Pulsar PSR J0740+6620 Informed by Radio Timing and XMM-Newton Spectroscopy

We report on Bayesian estimation of the radius, mass, and hot surface regions of the massive millisecond pulsar PSR J0740+6620, conditional on pulse-profile modeling of Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer X-ray Timing Instrument event data. We condition on informative pulsar mass, distance, and orbital inclination priors derived from the joint North American Nanohertz Observatory for Gravitational Waves and Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment/Pulsar wideband radio timing measurements of Fonseca et al. We use XMM-Newton European Photon Imaging Camera spectroscopic event data to inform our X-ray likelihood function. The prior support of the pulsar radius is truncated at 16 km to ensure coverage of current dense matter models. We assume conservative priors on instrument calibration uncertainty. We constrain the equatorial radius and mass of PSR J0740+6620 to be ${12.39}_{-0.98}^{+1.30}$ km and ${2.072}_{-0.066}^{+0.067}$ M ⊙ respectively, each reported as the posterior credible interval bounded by the 16% and 84% quantiles, conditional on surface hot regions that are non-overlapping spherical caps of fully ionized hydrogen atmosphere with uniform effective temperature; a posteriori, the temperature is ${\mathrm{log}}_{10}(T\,[{\rm{K}}])={5.99}_{-0.06}^{+0.05}$ for each hot region. All software for the X-ray modeling framework is open-source and all data, model, and sample information is publicly available, including analysis notebooks and model modules in the Python language. Furthermore, our marginal likelihood function of mass and equatorial radius is proportional to the marginal joint posterior density of those parameters (within the prior support) and can thus be computed from the posterior samples.

Validation of 2D Te and ne measurements made with Helium imaging spectroscopy in the volume of the TCV divertor

Abstract Multi-spectral imaging of helium atomic emission (HeMSI) has been used to create 2D poloidal maps of T e and n e in TCV’s divertor. To achieve these measurements, TCV’s MANTIS multispectral cameras (Perek et al 2019 Rev. Sci. Instrum. 90 123514) simultaneously imaged four He I lines (two singlet and two triplet) and a He II line (468 nm) from passively present He and He + . The images, which were absolutely calibrated and covered the whole divertor region, were inverted through the assumption of toroidal symmetry to create emissivity profiles and, consequently, line-ratio profiles. A collisional-radiative model (CRM) was applied to the line-ratio profiles to produce 2D poloidal maps of T e and n e . The collisional-radiative modeling was accomplished with the Goto helium CRM code (Zholobenko et al 2018 Nucl. Fusion 58 126006, Zholobenko et al 2018 Technical Report , Goto 2003 J. Quant. Spectrosc. Radiat. Transfer 76 331–44) which accounts for electron-impact excitation (EIE) and deexcitation, and electron–ion recombination (EIR) with He + . The HeMSI T e and n e measurements were compared with co-local Thomson scattering measurements. The two sets of measurements exhibited good agreement for ionizing plasmas: ( 5 eV ⩽ T e ⩽ 60 eV , and 2 × 10 18 m − 3 ⩽ n e ⩽ 3 × 10 19 m − 3 ) in the case of majority helium plasmas, and ( 10 eV ⩽ T e ⩽ 40 eV , 2 × 10 18 m − 3 ⩽ n e ⩽ 3 × 10 19 m − 3 ) in the case of majority deuterium plasmas. However, there were instances where HeMSI measurements diverged from Thomson scattering. When T e ⩽ 10 eV in majority deuterium plasmas, HeMSI deduced inaccurately high values of T e . This disagreement cannot be rectified within the CRM’s EIE and EIR framework. Second, on sporadic occasions within the private flux region, HeMSI produced erroneously high measurements of n e . Multi-spectral imaging of Helium emission has been demonstrated to produce accurate 2D poloidal maps of T e and n e within the divertor of a tokamak for plasma conditions relevant to contemporary divertor studies.
