Using Mineralogy to Interpret Martian Geologic History

The surface mineralogy of Mars is key to interpreting the planet’s geologic history and constraining when and where Mars may have been habitable to microbial life. Orbital mineralogical data from infrared spectrometers collected over the last two decades have demonstrated that Mars is more than a basaltic planet. Thermal infrared (TIR) emission spectrometers have identified regional variations in igneous minerals, iron oxides, and chloride salts, showing evidence for magmatic evolution and aqueous alteration. Orbital visible/shortwave infrared reflectance spectra provide detailed information about the aqueous history of Mars through the identification of clay minerals, sulfates, carbonates, zeolites, and amorphous materials in ancient ~3-4-billion-year-old terrains. Mineralogical data from rovers allow us to better characterize mineral formation mechanisms by identifying mineral assemblages and placing them in geologic context using outcrop- to grain-scale images. TIR and Mössbauer data from the Mars Exploration Rovers helped identify an ancient dune-interdune playa environment with multiple episodes of groundwater at Meridiani Planum and volcanism-induced hydrothermalism at Gusev crater. The CheMin X-ray diffractometer on the Mars Science Laboratory Curiosity rover in Gale crater is the first fully quantitative mineralogical instrument sent to another planetary surface. CheMin data allow the quantification of minerals and X-ray amorphous materials with a mineral detection limit of <1 wt.% and provide crystal chemistry of major phases from refined unit-cell parameters. CheMin has revealed local mineralogical changes in ancient sedimentary rocks not seen from orbit and helped identify habitable environments. Throughout the 600+ m of vertical stratigraphy studied so far, changes in clay mineralogy, Fe-oxides/oxyhydroxides, sulfates, and carbonates demonstrate a long history of surface and groundwater at Gale crater with variable salinity, pH, Eh, and temperature. Recent CheMin data document a decrease in clay minerals and an increase in sulfate minerals in younger strata that corresponds with a change from fluvio-lacustrine to eolian depositional environments, potentially documenting a change to a drier climate across the planet.

A review of high-efficiency silicon solar cells

Various parameters that affect solar cell efficiency were discussed. It is not understood why solar cells produced from less expensive Czochralski (Cz) silicon are less efficient than cells fabricated from more expensive float-zone (Fz) silicon. Performance characteristics were presented for recently produced, high-efficient solar cells fabricated by Westinghouse Electric Corp., Spire Corp., University of New South Wales, and Stanford University.

Acceptance tests and manufacturer relationships for 20 amphere-hour sealed nickel-cadmium cells using discharge parameters

One hundred and forty-six 20 ampere-hour sealed nickel cadmium cells from five manufacturers were detected using preliminary tests which do not require life testing and do not reduce the expected life of the cells. Differences between individual cells were also detected, using these tests, allowing a comparison of variability of cell construction by and between manufacturers.

Advanced techniques for the measurement of multiple recombination parameters in solar cells

A survey of bulk recombination measurement techniques was presented. Classical methods were reviewed along with their limiting assumptions and simplifications. A modulated light measurement system was built and showed the large effects of junction capacitance. Techniques for extension of classical methods for measurement of multiparameter multiregression measurements were identified and analyzed.

Encapsulant free-surfaces and interfaces: Critical parameters in controlling cell corrosion

Results are reported of studying the interaction of moisture with photovoltaic (PV) modules and custom-built test coupons in both laboratory and outdoor ambient environments. Characteristics measured included module cell-to-frame leakage currents, encapsulant bulk and surface currents, glass surface currents, and encapsulant/glass interface currents as functions of temperature and humidity. Using a computer model of interelectrode conduction, preferential conduction paths in PVB- and EVA-encapsulated modules are identified. In comparing the results of field and laboratory test environments on identical samples, comments are made about the greater severity of the outdoor environment. Several aspects of water-module interaction, including design strategies and continuing research, are discussed.

Comparative modeling of InP solar cell structures

The comparative modeling of p(+)n and n(+)p indium phosphide solar cell structures is studied using a numerical program PC-1D. The optimal design study has predicted that the p(+)n structure offers improved cell efficiencies as compared to n(+)p structure, due to higher open-circuit voltage. The various cell material and process parameters to achieve the maximum cell efficiencies are reported. The effect of some of the cell parameters on InP cell I-V characteristics was studied. The available radiation resistance data on n(+)p and p(+)p InP solar cells are also critically discussed.

Behavior of interdigitated back-contact solar cells

This paper presents experimental data concerning operation mechanisms of two versions of interdigitated back-contact solar cells: the tandem junction cell and the front-surface field cell. It is shown that a photogenerated forward bias at the front junction of a tandem junction cell is a critical parameter for cell performance which not only causes photogenerated carriers to migrate to the back junction, but also eliminates the reduction in photoresponse over back p(+) metallization regions. However, no similar light effects are observed in the performance of front-surface field cells. Finally, a discussion on mechanisms concerning the performance of front-surface field and tandem junction cells along with their merits is given.

Spatial quantification of maps or images - Cell size or pixel size implications

The paper discusses spatial quantification of maps or images. Spatial accuracies evaluated by mapping and inventory measures were observed with a range of cell sizes for a 10.36 sq km soil survey segment. The distribution of interboundary distances in a map was evaluated as unique, characterizing information; experimentally observed relationships between accuracy and cell size and interboundary distance distribution parameters and cell size led to a model of the process of spatial quantization. Grid positioning effects were evaluated and were significant only at the level of individual mapping units; two generations of 'universal' process models were derived, implemented, and evaluated.

Development of GaAs solar cells

This is the second quarterly technical report on a program, the goal of which is to achieve high efficiency GaAs solar cells. Analysis was concerned with providing design information for use in experimentally determining optimum solar cell process parameters. The first quarterly report contained the results of those design calculations. Using those results as a guide, experimental work was initiated to determine optimum cell process parameters. The initial results on this phase of the program are reported.

Evaluation parameters for the alkaline fuel cell oxygen electrode

Studies were made of Pt- and Au-catalyzed porous electrodes, designed for the cathode of the alkaline H2/O2 fuel cell, employing cyclic voltammetry and the floating half-cell method. The purpose was to obtain parameters from the cyclic voltammograms which could predict performance in the fuel cell. It was found that a satisfactory relationship between these two types of measurement could not be established; however, useful observations were made of relative performance of several types of carbon used as supports for noble metal catalysts and of some Au catalysts. The best half-cell performance with H2/O2 in a 35 percent KOH electrolyte at 80 C was given by unsupported fine particle Au on Teflon; this electrode is used in the Orbiter fuel cell.

Prototype Biology-Based Radiation Risk Module Project

Biological effects of space radiation and risk mitigation are strategic knowledge gaps for the Evolvable Mars Campaign. The current epidemiology-based NASA Space Cancer Risk (NSCR) model contains large uncertainties (HAT #6.5a) due to lack of information on the radiobiology of galactic cosmic rays (GCR) and lack of human data. The use of experimental models that most accurately replicate the response of human tissues is critical for precision in risk projections. Our proposed study will compare DNA damage, histological, and cell kinetic parameters after irradiation in normal 2D human cells versus 3D tissue models, and it will use a multi-scale computational model (CHASTE) to investigate various biological processes that may contribute to carcinogenesis, including radiation-induced cellular signaling pathways. This cross-disciplinary work, with biological validation of an evolvable mathematical computational model, will help reduce uncertainties within NSCR and aid risk mitigation for radiation-induced carcinogenesis.

Radiation damage in silicon NIP solar cells

The performance parameters of n(+) p p(+) silicon solar cells of varying thicknesses with boron doped p base resistivities of 1250 and 84 ohm centimeters were determined. High injection theory was used to analyze the experimental data. Results from an analysis of open circuit voltages show a much greater contribution to V(oc) from the back junction than is the case for the lower resistivity in common use. The base minority carrier distribution is seen to be significant in determining the contribution of V(B), the base contribution to V(oc). Although V(B) is small, its value increases with increasing radiation fluence. In this connection it is noted that, with illumination from the p(+) side, the sign of V(B) becomes positive, and V(B) itself becomes an additive term to V(oc). Diffusion lengths determined under high injection conditions are significantly greater than those obtained under low injection, while damage coefficients under low injection are higher than those obtained under high injection conditions.
