Unconventional Highly Active and Stable Oxygen Reduction Catalysts Informed by Computational Design Strategies

As conventional strategies of engineering new MIEC materials for SOFCs over the past few decades would have eliminated a material like BFCZ75 from contention, this work suggests there is a need to re-think existing design criteria and develop and understand new rational materials design strategies that challenge conventional wisdom and chemical intuition. The ultimate goal of cathode design of SOFCs is to achieve a balance among electrical conductivity, ionic conductivity, oxygen exchange activity and long-term stability. Instead of searching for a replacement for unstable MIEC like LSCF, which works well in a ceria based composite electrode, some stable composites contain a highly conductive material mixing with a less conductive but highly ORR active and stable MIEC such as BFCZ75 or even triple-phase composites could be an alternative way to advance the current SOFC technology. A knowledge-based system with learning for computer communication network design

Computer communication network design is well-known as complex and hard. For that reason, the most effective methods used to solve it are heuristic. Weaknesses of these techniques are listed and a new approach based on artificial intelligence for solving this problem is presented. This approach is particularly recommended for large packet switched communication networks, in the sense that it permits a high degree of reliability and offers a very flexible environment dealing with many relevant design parameters such as link cost, link capacity, and message delay.

Computer aided flexible envelope designs

Computer aided design methods are presented for the design and construction of strong, lightweight structures which require complex and precise geometric definition. The first, flexible structures, is a unique system of modeling folded plate structures and space frames. It is possible to continuously vary the geometry of a space frame to produce large, clear spans with curvature. The second method deals with developable surfaces, where both folding and bending are explored with the observed constraint of available building materials, and what minimal distortion result in maximum design capability. Alternative inexpensive fabrication techniques are being developed to achieve computer defined enclosures which are extremely lightweight and mathematically highly precise.

Operator Station Design System - A computer aided design approach to work station layout

The Operator Station Design System is resident in NASA's Johnson Space Center Spacecraft Design Division Performance Laboratory. It includes stand-alone minicomputer hardware and Panel Layout Automated Interactive Design and Crew Station Assessment of Reach software. The data base consists of the Shuttle Transportation System Orbiter Crew Compartment (in part), the Orbiter payload bay and remote manipulator (in part), and various anthropometric populations. The system is utilized to provide panel layouts, assess reach and vision, determine interference and fit problems early in the design phase, study design applications as a function of anthropometric and mission requirements, and to accomplish conceptual design to support advanced study efforts.

How directed evolution reshapes the energy landscape in an enzyme to boost catalysis

Two steps forward—now look back Whether designed computationally or uncovered in activity screening, enzymes repurposed for biocatalysis rarely start at the peak of proficiency. However, directed evolution can in some cases increase catalytic efficiency of a poor enzyme by many orders of magnitude. Otten et al. used a suite of biochemical techniques to investigate the origins of rate enhancement in a previously evolved model enzyme. Two conformational states are present in the initial, computationally designed enzyme, but only one is active. Shifting the population toward the active state is one factor in increasing catalytic efficiency during evolution. Single mutations do not greatly increase activity, but the synergistic combination of just two out of 17 substitutions can provide most of the rate enhancement seen in the final, evolved enzyme. Synopsis of a computer program designed to interface a personal computer with the fast data acquisition system of a time-of-flight mass spectrometer

Briefly described are the essential features of a computer program designed to interface a personal computer with the fast, digital data acquisition system of a time-of-flight mass spectrometer. The instrumentation was developed to provide a time-resolved analysis of individual vapor pulses produced by the incidence of a pulsed laser beam on an ablative material. The high repetition rate spectrometer coupled to a fast transient recorder captures complete mass spectra every 20 to 35 microsecs, thereby providing the time resolution needed for the study of this sort of transient event. The program enables the computer to record the large amount of data generated by the system in short time intervals, and it provides the operator the immediate option of presenting the spectral data in several different formats. Furthermore, the system does this with a high degree of automation, including the tasks of mass labeling the spectra and logging pertinent instrumental parameters.

The vehicle design evaluation program - A computer-aided design procedure for transport aircraft

The vehicle design evaluation program is described. This program is a computer-aided design procedure that provides a vehicle synthesis capability for vehicle sizing, external load analysis, structural analysis, and cost evaluation. The vehicle sizing subprogram provides geometry, weight, and balance data for aircraft using JP, hydrogen, or methane fuels. The structural synthesis subprogram uses a multistation analysis for aerodynamic surfaces and fuselages to develop theoretical weights and geometric dimensions. The parts definition subprogram uses the geometric data from the structural analysis and develops the predicted fabrication dimensions, parts material raw stock buy requirements, and predicted actual weights. The cost analysis subprogram uses detail part data in conjunction with standard hours, realization factors, labor rates, and material data to develop the manufacturing costs. The program is used to evaluate overall design effects on subsonic commercial type aircraft due to parameter variations.

A rule based computer aided design system

A Computer Aided Design (CAD) system is presented which supports the iterative process of design, the dimensional continuity between mating parts, and the hierarchical structure of the parts in their assembled configuration. Prolog, an interactive logic programming language, is used to represent and interpret the data base. The solid geometry representing the parts is defined in parameterized form using the swept volume method. The system is demonstrated with a design of a spring piston.

Computer program aids dual reflector antenna system design

Computer program aids in the design of maximum efficiency dual reflector antenna systems. It designs a shaped cassegrainian antenna which has nearly 100 percent efficiency, and accepts input parameters specifying an existing conventional antenna and produces as output the modifications necessary to conform to a shaped design.
