Improved Measurement of C P Violation Parameters in B s 0 → J / ψ K + K − Decays in the Vicinity of the ϕ ( 1020 ) Resonance

The decay-time-dependent C P asymmetry in B s 0 → J / ψ ( → μ + μ − ) K + K − decays is measured using proton-proton collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 6 fb − 1 , collected with the LHCb detector at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. Using a sample of approximately 349 000 B s 0 signal decays with an invariant K + K − mass in the vicinity of the ϕ ( 1020 ) resonance, the C P -violating phase ϕ s is measured, along with the difference in decay widths of the light and heavy mass eigenstates of the B s 0 − B ¯ s 0 system, Δ Γ s , and the difference of the average B s 0 and B 0 meson decay widths, Γ s − Γ d . The values obtained are ϕ s = − 0.039 ± 0.022 ± 0.006 rad , Δ Γ s = 0.0845 ± 0.0044 ± 0.0024 ps − 1 , and Γ s − Γ d = − 0.005 6 − 0.0015 + 0.0013 ± 0.0014 ps − 1 , where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. These are the most precise single measurements to date and are consistent with expectations based on the Standard Model and with the previous LHCb analyses of this decay. These results are combined with previous independent LHCb measurements. The phase ϕ s is also measured independently for each polarization state of the K + K − system and shows no evidence for polarization dependence. © 2024 CERN, for the LHCb Collaboration 2024 CERN

A three-dimensional study of 30- to 300-MeV atmospheric gamma rays

A three-dimensional study of atmospheric gamma rays with energy greater than 30 MeV has been carried out. A knowledge of these atmospheric secondaries has significant applications to the study of cosmic gamma rays. For detectors carried on balloons, atmospherically produced gamma rays are the major source of background. For satellite detectors, atmospheric secondaries provide a calibration source. Experimental results were obtained from four balloon flights from Palestine, Texas, with a 15 cm by 15 cm digitized wire grid spark chamber. The energy spectrum for downward-moving gamma rays steepens with increasing atmospheric depth. Near the top of the atmosphere, the spectrum steepens with increasing zenith angle. A new model of atmospheric secondary production has calculated the depth, the energy, and the zenith angle dependence of gamma rays above 30 MeV, using a comprehensive three-dimensional Monte Carlo model of the nucleon-meson-electromagnetic cascade.

First Measurement of Λ c Baryon Production in Au + Au Collisions at s N N = 200 GeV

Herein we report on the first measurement of the charmed baryon Λ c ± production at midrapidity ( | y | < 1 ) in Au + Au collisions at s NN = 200 GeV collected by the STAR experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The Λ c / D 0 [denoting ( Λ c + + Λ c - ) / ( D 0 + D ¯ 0 ) ] yield ratio is measured to be 1.08 ± 0.16 ( stat ) ± 0.26 ( sys ) in the 0%–20% most central Au + Au collisions for the transverse momentum ( p T ) range 3 < p T < 6 GeV / c . This is significantly larger than the pythia model calculations for p + p collisions. The measured Λ c / D 0 ratio, as a function of p T and collision centrality, is comparable to the baryon-to-meson ratios for light and strange hadrons in Au + Au collisions. Model calculations including coalescence hadronization for charmed baryon and meson formation reproduce the features of our measured Λ c / D 0 ratio.

Search for rare decays B + → D s ( * ) + η , D s ( * ) + K ¯ 0 , D + η , and D + K 0

We present a study of rare decay modes B + → D$^{+}_{s}$ℎ 0 , B + → D$^{*}_{s}$⁢ + ℎ 0 , and B + → D + ⁢ℎ 0 , where ℎ 0 denotes the neutral meson η or K 0 , using a data sample of (772 ±10) ×10 6 B$\overline{B}$ events produced at the Υ⁡(4⁢S) resonance. The data were collected by the Belle detector operating at the asymmetric-energy KEKB collider. We find no evidence for these decays, so we set upper limits at the 90% confidence level on the branching fractions of , , and D + ⁢ℎ 0 decay modes. Along with these rare decay modes, we report improved measurements of the color-suppressed decay branching fractions $\mathscr{B}$⁡($\overline{B}$ 0 →D 0 ⁢η) =(26.6 ±1.2 ±2.1) ×10 -5 and $\mathscr{B}$⁡($\overline{B}$) 0 →D 0 ⁢ $\overline{K}$ 0 ) =(5.6 ±0.5 ±0.2) ×10 -5 . The first and second quoted uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively.

Charm meson and charm-meson molecule in an expanding hadron gas

We present our studies on the evolution of charm mesons after the kinetic freeze-out of the expanding hadron gas produced in a heavy-ion collision and the thermal correction to a loosely bound charm-meson molecule in a pion gas. The πD* → πD* reaction rates have t-channel singularities that give contributions inversely proportional to the thermal width of the D. The ratio of the D 0 and D + production rate can differ significantly from those predicted using the measured D* branching fractions. The thermal correction to a loosely bound charm-meson molecule in a pion gas comes primarily from the complex thermal energy shift of the charm-meson constituents.

Addendum to "Testing meson portal dark sector solutions to the MiniBooNE anomaly at CCM"

In Aguilar-Arevalo et al. [Phys. Rev. D 109, 095017 (2024)], we explored various effective field theories that could explain the MiniBooNE excess involving long-lived particles produced from charged meson decays and the sensitivity of the Coherent CAPTAIN Mills experiment to these models. In this addendum, we extend the analysis to project sensitivity of upcoming MicroBooNE data to the long-lived particle models considered in the previous work. We find that a dedicated MicroBooNE analysis of the single photon final state with longer exposure and improved signal efficiency will be sensitive to these new physics explanations of the MiniBooNE excess, and could rule them out with a null observation at the 95% confidence level.

Variations to the z-Expansion of the Form Factor Describing the Decay of B Mesons

We examine the decay rate of the particle decay B 0 → D -ℓ +νℓ using data collected from the Belle Collaboration. We studied three parameterizations of the form factor which describe the differential decay rate, the Caprini, Lellouch, and Neubert (CLN) parametrization, the Boyd, Grinstein, and Lebed (BGL) parametrization, and the Bourrely, Caprini, and Lellouch (BCL) parameterization. The form factor is a function of the hadronic recoil variable w, and each parameterization contains unique free parameters which are the focus of this work. We test the extrapolations of the form factor by fitting many different subsets of the low w data and then compare the prediction of the fit to the high w data using a χ 2 -metric. By only fitting the low w data we are able to examine the stability of extrapolations which will be informative for lattice simulations.

Emergence of the polydeterminant in QCD

A generalization of the determinant appears in particle physics in effective Lagrangian interaction terms that model the chiral anomaly in quantum chromodynamics (Giacosa et al. in Phys Rev D 97(9):091901, 2018, Phys Rev D 109(7):L071502, 2024), in particular in connection to mesons. This polydeterminant function, known in the mathematical literature as a mixed discriminant, associates N distinct N x N complex matrices into a complex number and reduces to the usual determinant when all matrices are taken as equal. Here, we explore the main properties of the polydeterminant applied to (quantum) fields by using a formalism and a language close to high-energy physics approaches. We discuss its use as a tool to write down novel chiral anomalous Lagrangian terms and present an explicit illustrative model for mesons. Finally, the extension of the polydeterminant as a function of tensors is shown.

Production of b b ¯ at forward rapidity in p + p collisions at s = 510 GeV

The cross section of bottom quark-antiquark ( b b ¯ ) production in p + p collisions at s = 510 GeV is measured with the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The results are based on the yield of high mass, like-sign muon pairs measured within the PHENIX muon arm acceptance ( 1.2 < | y | < 2.2 ). The b b ¯ signal is extracted from like-sign dimuons by utilizing the unique properties of neutral B meson oscillation. We report a differential cross section of d σ b b ¯ → μ ± μ ± / d y = 0.16 ± 0.01 ( stat ) ± 0.02 ( syst ) ± 0.02 ( global ) nb for like-sign muons in the rapidity and p T ranges 1.2 < | y | < 2.2 and p T > 1 GeV / c , and dimuon mass of 5 – 10 GeV / c 2 . The extrapolated total cross section at this energy for b b ¯ production is 13.1 ± 0.6 ( stat ) ± 1.5 ( syst ) ± 2.7 ( global ) μ b . The total cross section is compared to a perturbative quantum chromodynamics calculation and is consistent within uncertainties. The azimuthal opening angle between muon pairs from b b ¯ decays and their p T distributions are compared to distributions generated using ps pythia 6, which includes next-to-leading order processes. The azimuthal correlations and pair p T distribution are not very well described by pythia calculations, but are still consistent within uncertainties. Flavor creation and flavor excitation subprocesses are favored over gluon splitting.

Precision measurement of the B0 meson lifetime using B0→J/ψK∗0 decays with the ATLAS detector

A measurement of the B0$$B^{0}$$ meson lifetime using B0→J/ψK∗0$$ B^{0} \rightarrow J/\psi K^{*0} $$ decays in data from 13 TeV$$\text {TeV}$$ proton–proton collisions with an integrated luminosity of 140fb-1$$ 140~\mathrm {fb^{-1}} $$ recorded by the ATLAS detector at the LHC is presented. The measured effective lifetime is τ=1.5053±0.0012(stat.)±0.0035(syst.)ps.$$ \tau = 1.5053\pm 0.0012~\mathrm {(stat.)} \pm 0.0035~\mathrm {(syst.)~ps}. $$The average decay width extracted from the effective lifetime, using parameters from external sources, is Γd=0.6639±0.0005(stat.)±0.0016(syst.)±0.0038(ext.)ps-1,$$\begin{aligned} \Gamma _d = 0.6639\pm 0.0005~\mathrm {(stat.)} \pm 0.0016~\mathrm {(syst.)}\\ \pm 0.0038~\text {(ext.)} \text {~ps}^{-1}, \end{aligned}$$where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic and from external sources. The earlier ATLAS measurement of Γs$$\Gamma _s$$ in the Bs0→J/ψϕ$$B^{0}_{s} \rightarrow J/\psi \phi $$ decay was used to derive a value for the ratio of the average decay widths Γd$$\Gamma _d$$ and Γs$$\Gamma _s$$ for B0$$B^{0} $$ and Bs0$$B^{0}_{s} $$ mesons respectively, of ΓdΓs=0.9905±0.0022(stat.)±0.0036(syst.)±0.0057(ext.).$$ \frac{\Gamma _d }{\Gamma _s } = 0.9905\pm 0.0022~\text {(stat.)} \pm 0.0036~\text {(syst.)} \pm 0.0057~\text {(ext.)}. $$The measured lifetime, average decay width and decay width ratio are in agreement with theoretical predictions and with measurements by other experiments. This measurement provides the most precise result of the effective lifetime of the B0$$B^{0}$$ meson to date.

Spatial imaging of polarized deuterons at the Electron-Ion Collider

We study diffractive vector meson production at small-x in the collision of electrons and polarized deuterons e + d $\uparrow$ . We consider the polarization dependence of the nuclear wave function of the deuteron, which results in an azimuthal angular dependence of the produced vector meson when the deuteron is transversely polarized. The Fourier coefficients extracted from the azimuthal angular dependence of the vector meson differential cross-section exhibit notable differences between longitudinally and transversely polarized deuterons. The angular dependence of the extracted effective deuteron radius provides direct insight into the structure of the polarized deuteron wave function. Furthermore, we observe slightly increased gluon saturation effects when the deuteron is longitudinally polarized compared to the transversely polarized case. The small-x observables studied in this work will be accessible at the future Electron-Ion Collider.

Search for CP violation in $D^{+}_{(s)}\to h^{+} \pi^{0}$ and $D^{+}_{(s)}\to h^{+}\eta$ decays

Searches for CP violation in the two-body decays $D^{+}_{(s)}\to h^{+} \pi^{0}$ and $D^{+}_{(s)}\to h^{+}\eta$ (where h + denotes a π + or K + meson) are performed using pp collision data collected by the LHCb experiment corresponding to either 9 fb –1 or 6 fb –1 of integrated luminosity. The π 0 and η mesons are reconstructed using the e + e – γ final state, which can proceed as three-body decays π 0 → e + e – γ and η → e + e – γ, or via the two-body decays π 0 → γγ and η → γγ followed by a photon conversion. The measurements are made relative to the control modes $D^{+}_{(s)}\to K^{0}_{S}h^{+}$ to cancel the production and detection asymmetries. The CP asymmetries are measured to be A CP (D + →π + π 0 )=(–1.3±0.9±0.6)%, A CP (D + →K + π 0 )=(–3.2±4.7±2.1)%, A CP (D + →π + η)=(–0.2±0.8±0.4)%, A CP (D + →K + η)=(–6±10±4)%, A CP (D$^{+}_{s}$→K + π 0 )=(–0.8±3.9±1.2)%, A CP (D$^{+}_{s}$→π + η)=(0.8±0.7±0.5)%, A CP (D$^{+}_{s}$→K + η)=(0.9±3.7±1.1)%, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. These results are consistent with no CP violation and mostly constitute the most precise measurements of A CP in these decay modes to date.

Status of the Jefferson Lab Eta Factory (JEF) experiment

The Jefferson Lab Eta Factory (JEF) experiment is an experiment running in Hall D at Jefferson Lab that focuses on studying the decays of the ¿ meson. These decays provide a rich laboratory for searching for new charge conjugation violating / parity conserving (CVPC) processes, looking for hints of Beyond Standard Model physics, and probing higher order terms in Chiral Perturbation Theory. The flagship channel is the rare decay ¿ ¿ p0¿¿, the measurement of which required an upgrade to the existing equipment in Hall D. The experiment uses the GlueX detector, a fixed-target large acceptance spectrometer based on a solenoid magnet containing drift chambers for tracking charged particles and a lead-scintillator barrel calorimeter in the central region and an array of 4 × 4 × 45 cm3 lead glass blocks in the forward region for detecting neutral particles. During the last two years the inner 80×80 cm2 region of the forward calorimeter has been replaced by an array of 2 × 2 × 20 cm3 lead tungstate crystals, which provide factors of two improvement in energy and position resolution. The first round of data taking with this configuration took place this year. A first look at the data will be presented.
