A practical assessment of spectral accuracy for hyperbolic problems with discontinuities

Physical and transform space filtering has been applied to the Fourier spectral collocation solution of the constant coefficient scalar wave equation with a discontinuous initial condition. High order accuracy can be extracted from the unfiltered solution. Smooth, high order Fourier space filtering gives expected polynomial order solutions away from the discontinuity. Spectral accuracy is observed with the physical space filter of Gottlieb and Tadmor.

Discontinuous solutions to hyperbolic systems under operator splitting

Two-dimensional systems of linear hyperbolic equations are studied with regard to their behavior under a solution strategy that in alternate time-steps solves exactly the component one-dimensional operators. The initial data is a step function across an oblique discontinuity. The manner in which this discontinuity breaks up under repeated applications of the split operator is analyzed, and it is shown that the split solution will fail to match the true solution in any case where the two operators do not share all their eigenvectors. The special case of the fluid flow equations is analyzed in more detail, and it is shown that arbitrary initial data gives rise to pseudo acoustic waves and a non-physical stationary wave. The implications of these findings for the design of high-resolution computing schemes are discussed.

Tangential discontinuities in the solar wind - Correlated field and velocity changes and the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability

Three-dimensional Helios plasma and field data are used to investigate the relative changes in direction of the velocity and magnetic field vectors across tangential discontinuities (TDs) in the solar wind at solar distances of 0.29-0.50 AU. It is found for TDs with large Delta-v and (Delta-B)/B that Delta-v and Delta-B are closely aligned with each other, in agreement with the unexpected results of previous studies of TDs observed at 1 AU and beyond. It is shown that this effect probably results from the destruction by the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability of TDs for which Delta-v and Delta-B are not aligned. The observed decrease in the number of interplanetary discontinuities with increasing solar distance may be associated with the growth of the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability with decreasing Alfven speed.

Estimation of discontinuous coefficients in parabolic systems - Applications to reservoir simulation

Spline-based techniques for estimating spatially varying parameters that appear in parabolic distributed systems (typical of those found in reservoir simulation problems) are presented. In particular, the problem of determining discontinuous coefficients is discussed, estimating both the functional shape and points of discontinuity for such parameters. In addition, the ideas may also be applied to problems with unknown initial conditions and unknown parameters appearing in terms representing external forces. Convergence results and a summary of numerical performance of the resulting algorithms are given.

Magnetic reorientation and spontaneous formation of tangential discontinuities in deformed magnetic fields

This paper provides an explicit illustration of the formation of tangential discontinuities (current sheets) in a force-free magnetic field whose footpoints have been subjected to bounded continuous displacement and shuffling so that the lines of force are wound about each other in complex but continuous patterns. The discontinuities appear spontaneously because of the reorientation of the field under the enhanced pressure where two regions of different field topology are pressed together by the general winding and wrapping.

Modeling of Some Coplanar Waveguide Discontinuities

Presented are lumped equivalent circuit models for several coplanar waveguide discontinuities such as an open circuit, a series gap, and a symmetric step, and their element values as a function of the discontinuity physical dimensions. The model element values are de-embedded from measured S-parameters. The frequency dependence of the effective dielectric constant was measured and compared to computed values.

Estimation of discontinuous coefficients and boundary parameters for hyperbolic systems

The problem of estimating discontinuous coefficients, including locations of discontinuities, that occur in second-order hyperbolic systems typical of those arising in one-dimensional surface seismic problems, is considered. The problem of identifying unknown parameters that appear in boundary conditions for the system is addressed. A spline-based approximation theory is presented as well as related convergence findings and representative numerical examples.

Isoparametric finite element methods to estimate discontinuous coefficients in two-dimensional elliptic equations

A summary of findings is presented on the problem of estimating discontinuous coefficients, including the locations of interfaces at which discontinuities occur, for elliptic equations on a two-dimensional domain. Finite-element approximations are constructed that are based on an underlying grid that adaptively moves to follow locations of interfaces as they are iteratively updated in the numerical estimation process.

An adaptive pseudospectral method for discontinuous problems

The accuracy of adaptively chosen, mapped polynomial approximations is studied for functions with steep gradients or discontinuities. It is shown that, for steep gradient functions, one can obtain spectral accuracy in the original coordinate system by using polynomial approximations in a transformed coordinate system with substantially fewer collocation points than are necessary using polynomial expansion directly in the original, physical, coordinate system. It is also shown that one can avoid the usual Gibbs oscillation associated with steep gradient solutions of hyperbolic pde's by approximation in suitably chosen coordinate systems. Continuous, high gradient solutions are computed with spectral accuracy (as measured in the physical coordinate system). Discontinuous solutions associated with nonlinear hyperbolic equations can be accurately computed by using an artificial viscosity chosen to smooth out the solution in the mapped, computational domain. Thus, shocks can be effectively resolved on a scale that is subgrid to the resolution available with collocation only in the physical domain. Examples with Fourier and Chebyshev collocation are given.

Identification and recovery of discontinuous synoptic features in satellite-retrieved brightness temperatures using a radiative transfer model

An attempt is made to recover and identify discontinuous synoptic features from satellite-retrieved brightness temperatures, with attention to near-discontinuities in temperature and moisture that are typically found in fronts and inversions. Efforts are made to ascertain whether the vectors of satellite channel brightness temperatures can be classified according to synoptic source, and whether those sources are amenable to quantification.

Coplanar waveguide discontinuities for P-I-N diode switches and filter applications

A full wave space domain integral equation (SDIE) analysis of coplanar waveguide (CPW) two port discontinuities is presented. An experimental setup to measure the S-parameters of such discontinuities is described. Experimental and theoretical results for CPW realizations of pass-band and stop-band filters are presented. The S-parameters of such structures are plotted in the frequency range 5 to 25 GHz.

MHD intermediate shock discontinuities. I - Rankine-Hugoniot conditions

Recent numerical investigations have focused attention once more on the role of intermediate shocks in MHD. Four types of intermediate shock are identified using a graphical representation of the MHD Rankine-Hugoniot conditions. This same representation can be used to exhibit the close relationship of intermediate shocks to switch-on shocks and rotational discontinuities. The conditions under which intermediate discontinuities can be found are elucidated. The variations in velocity, pressure, entropy and magnetic-field jumps with upstream parameters in intermediate shocks are exhibited graphically. The evolutionary arguments traditionally advanced against intermediate shocks may fail because the equations of classical MHD are not strictly hyperbolic.

Discontinuities in the shallow Martian crust at Lunae, Syria, and Sinai Plana

Detailed photoclinometric data are presented for a variety of surface features (pits, troughs, wall valleys, and grabens) within three study areas in the western equatorial regions of Mars (Lunae, Syria, and Sinai Plana) that provide evidence for mechanical discontinuities within the shallow Martian crust in these regions. The data's relation to some of the previously proposed mechanical discontinuities within the Martian crust is discussed, and the geologic significance of these features is speculated upon.

Transition density of one-dimensional diffusion with discontinuous drift

The transition density of a one-dimensional diffusion process with a discontinuous drift coefficient is studied. A probabilistic representation of the transition density is given, illustrating the close connections between discontinuities of the drift and Brownian local times. In addition, some explicit results are obtained based on the trivariate density of Brownian motion, its occupation, and local times.

Intrinsic magnetic discontinuities and solar X-ray emission

The fundamental theorem of magnetostatic equilibrium predicts that the bipolar magnetic fields of active regions on the sun contain tangential discontinuities as an intrinsic part of their equilibrium. It appears that rapid reconnection at these many tangential discontinuities (nanoflares) is the primary source of heat that produces the X-ray emitting corona. The X-ray corona is then a cloud of nanoflares.
