The IGS Global Data Center at the CDDIS: An Update

The Crustal Dynamics Data Information System (CDDIS) has served as a global data center for the International GPS Service (IGS) since its start in June 1992, providing on-line access to data from nearly 300 sites on a daily basis. The CDDIS provides easy and ready access to a variety of data sets, products, and information about these data. The specialized nature of the CDDIS lends itself well to enhancement and thus can accommodate diverse data sets and user requirements. This poster paper will present information about the GPS and GLONASS data and products archive at the CDDIS. General information about the system, the computer architecture, archive contents, and future plans, and its support of other international space geodesy services (the ILRS, IVS, and IDS) will be discussed.

Next Generation Heat Transfer Fluids for Two-Phase Immersion Cooling of Data Centers

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the performance of next generation dielectric fluids in a Two-Phase Immersion Cooling (2PIC) system, which was designed for use in data centers. Hence, this report contains the performance evaluations of a new developmental dielectric fluid, Opteon™ 2P50, in a commercially available small-scale 2PIC system under typical and off-design range of operating conditions. Accordingly, ambient temperature and thermal loads were varied to simulate different ambient conditions. Additionally, this research report describes the development of a semi-empirical lumped model to predict the energy efficiency of the 2PIC system using Opteon™ 2P50 across a wide range of conditions. The model aims to offer a comprehensive understanding of the system’s efficiency and potential improvements. The outcomes of this study are expected to contribute to the adoption of sustainable 2PIC cooling technologies in data centers.

Enhanced Product Generation at NASA Data Centers Through Grid Technology

This paper describes how grid technology can support the ability of NASA data centers to provide customized data products. A combination of grid technology and commodity processors are proposed to provide the bandwidth necessary to perform customized processing of data, with customized data subsetting providing the initial example. This customized subsetting engine can be used to support a new type of subsetting, called phenomena-based subsetting, where data is subsetted based on its association with some phenomena, such as mesoscale convective systems or hurricanes. This concept is expanded to allow the phenomena to be detected in one type of data, with the subsetting requirements transmitted to the subsetting engine to subset a different type of data. The subsetting requirements are generated by a data mining system and transmitted to the subsetter in the form of an XML feature index that describes the spatial and temporal extent of the phenomena. For this work, a grid-based mining system called the Grid Miner is used to identify the phenomena and generate the feature index. This paper discusses the value of grid technology in facilitating the development of a high performance customized product processing and the coupling of a grid mining system to support phenomena-based subsetting.

The XRISM Science Data Center: Optimizing the Scientific Return from a Unique X-ray Observatory

The X-Ray Imaging and Spectroscopy Mission, XRISM, is currently scheduled to launch in 2022 with the objective of building on the brief, but significant, successes of the ASTRO-H (Hitomi) mission in solving outstanding astrophysical questions using high resolution X-ray spectroscopy. The XRISM Science Operations Team (SOT) consists of the JAXA-led Science Operations Center (SOC) and NASA-led Science Data Center (SDC), which work together to optimize the scientific output from the Resolve high-resolution spectrometer and the Xtend wide-field imager through planning and scheduling of observations, processing and distribution of data, development and distribution of software tools and the calibration database (CaldB), support of ground and in-flight calibration, and support of XRISM users in their scientific investigations of the energetic universe. Here, we summarize the roles and responsibilities of the SDC and its current status and future plans. The Resolve instrument poses particular challenges due to its unprecedented combination of high spectral resolution and throughput, broad spectral coverage, and relatively small field-of-view and large pixel-size. We highlight those challenges and how they are being met.

Options for Meeting Data Center Demand in Virginia: Focus on GETs and Reconductoring [Slides]

Data center demand growth in Virginia will need to met with many options - GETs and/or reconductoring have the potential to be part of the solution suite in the short-term and medium-term. Almost all GETs and reconductoring technologies have more favorable economics than transmission wires investments considering relatively low levels of existing wide-scale deployment. Deployment of GETs and/or reconductoring is not a one size fits all - requires detailed analysis. The complementary nature of GETs and/or reconductoring impacts have the potential to be synergistic (more congestion relief, more transfer capability, more cost savings - when implemented together).

Global Change Data Center: Mission, Organization, Major Activities, and 2001 Highlights

Rapid efficient access to Earth sciences data is fundamental to the Nation's efforts to understand the effects of global environmental changes and their implications for public policy. It becomes a bigger challenge in the future when data volumes increase further and missions with constellations of satellites start to appear. Demands on data storage, data access, network throughput, processing power, and database and information management are increased by orders of magnitude, while budgets remain constant and even shrink. The Global Change Data Center's (GCDC) mission is to provide systems, data products, and information management services to maximize the availability and utility of NASA's Earth science data. The specific objectives are (1) support Earth science missions be developing and operating systems to generate, archive, and distribute data products and information; (2) develop innovative information systems for processing, archiving, accessing, visualizing, and communicating Earth science data; and (3) develop value-added products and services to promote broader utilization of NASA Earth Sciences Enterprise (ESE) data and information. The ultimate product of GCDC activities is access to data and information to support research, education, and public policy.

NEXUS-DC: Nuclear Energy eXpedition for US Data Centers [Slides]

This presentation covers the growing interest in utilizing nuclear power to satisfy the increasing energy demands of data centers in the United States, emphasizing the factors that accelerate reactor deployment. It addresses clean and reliable energy needs, highlights the importance of power supply redundancy for reliability, and discusses challenges and solutions related to cooling, waste heat reuse, and techno-economics. Additionally, it includes a strength, weakness, opportunities and threat analysis and emphasizes community engagement and collaboration for accelerating regulatory approvals and reactor deployment.

Demands on data storage, data access, network throughput, processing power, and database and information management are increased by orders of magnitude, while budgets remain constant and even shrink.The Global Change Data Center's (GCDC) mission is to develop and operate data systems, generate science products, and provide archival and distribution services for Earth science data in support of the U.S. Global Change Program and NASA's Earth Sciences Enterprise. The ultimate product of the GCDC activities is access to data to support research, education, and public policy.

Expanding a Supercomputer Facility Using Modular Data Center Technology

With the expansion of high-end computing resources needed to support NASA's increasing demands for physics-based simulations, the facility housing Pleiades-the agency's largest supercomputer-recently reached its power and cooling capacity. In response, the NASA Advanced Supercomputing Division at Ames Research Center undertook a prototype project that resulted in a new facility based on modular data center technology. The facility, a ~1000 square-foot module on a concrete pad with room for 16-18 compute racks, was completed in fall 2016 and an SGI computer system, named Electra, was deployed there in early 2017. Cooling is performed via an evaporative system built into the module, and preliminary experience shows a Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) of ~1.03. Electra achieved over a petaflop on the LINPACK benchmark, sufficient to rank number 96 on the November 2016 TOP500 list. The system consists of 1,152 InfiniBand-connected Intel Xeon Broadwell-based nodes. Its users access their files on a facility wide file system shared by all compute assets via Mellanox MetroX InfiniBand extenders, which connect the Electra fabric to Lustre routers InfiniBand fabric over fiber-optic links about 300 meters long. The prototype has exceeded expectations and is serving as a blueprint for future expansions.*†

Implications of AI and Data Center Service Demand on Energy, Water, and Economic Systems

This talk focuses on the challenges posed by the rapid growth of data centers (DCs), which rely heavily on electricity, water, land, and mineral resources, and have significant interactions with economic growth. The U.S. leads in DC deployment, but understanding how resource demands and constraints impact DC expansion requires strategic multisector analysis. To address this, the talk introduces a new conceptual framework and modeling capability within GCAM-USA, allowing integrated analysis of DC service demand, electricity, and direct and indirect water needs under varied scenarios. Insights include state-level water and electricity trends for DCs, uncertainty bounds, and the broader implications for resources and economics.

Lunar laser ranging data deposited in the National Space Science Data Center: Filtered observations for January - June 1972 and unfiltered photon detections for July - December 1972

The documentation to be used in conjunction with the filtered data deposited in the National Space Science Data Center is presented. The data was obtained during laser ranging operations between the McDonald Observatory and Apollo 11, 14, and 15 reflectors for the six months ending June 30, 1972. Unfiltered photon detections for the succeeding six months are also included in the system. Nominal coordinates for the laser ranging equipment are given and the calibration code for filtered data is shown. Data format using the CDC 6600 computer is described.

Data Placement Optimization for ATLAS in a Multi-Tiered Storage System within a Data Center

Scientific experiments and computations, especially in High Energy Physics, are generating and accumulating data at an unprecedented rate. Effectively managing this vast volume of data while ensuring efficient data analysis poses a significant challenge for data centers, which must integrate various storage technologies. This paper proposes addressing this challenge by designing and developing a precise data popularity prediction model utilizing state-of-theart AI/ML techniques. This model is crafted from the analysis of ATLAS data and access patterns. It enables us to migrate infrequently accessed data to more economical storage media, such as tape drives, while storing frequently accessed data on faster yet costlier storage media like HDD or SSD. This strategic approach ensures data is placed optimally into the appropriate storage classes, thereby maximizing storage capacity while minimizing data access latency for end-users. Furthermore, the paper includes a performance evaluation of the prediction model using various key metrics such as F1 score, accuracy, precision and recall. Finally, we present a prototype use case, leveraging real-world file access data to assess the model’s impact on performance.

The National Space Science Data Center

An overview is presented of the services offered by the National Space Science Data Center (NSSDC). The NSSDC was established by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) over 20 years ago to be the long-term archive for data from its space missions. NSSDC's goal is to provide the research community with data and attendant services in the most efficient, economical, and useful manner possible now and in the future. The organization is dedicated to getting the most scientific value out of NASA's initial investment in its missions. Each service available to scientists through the world is discussed. Also a contact person is identified for each service in case more information in needed.
